New Privacy Settings Idea (Blocking for Telegrams)

Oi! This noob is annoying me and fellow nations of Psyung. He thinks he is at war with our nations and frequently telegrams us:
Sorry but I feel like bombing your country.

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMB

BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMM

EXXXPLOOOOOOOOOOSSSSIIIIIIIIIIIIONNNNNNNNNNNN

KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMMMMMM

POWPOWPOW BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMM

KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM KABOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM

It is quite annoying. Suddenly, I had an idea:

 Why can't we have block controls on our telegrams?

-Dictator of Mianimas

Oh! I'm an envoy now!

If he's spamming you, save the telegrams (evidence) and report it through the getting help page.

not a bad idea to block out annoying people but like he said just get the MODS to delete him or warn him then he should shut up

I wish we could have blocking. Sometimes I get n00bs who try to spam up my entire box, and mod action can be really slow at times. This would be an extremely helpful feature of the game.

Of course... I understand if it's an improvement that would be too much work/coding/whatever.

i completely agree - i think blocking is a gr8 idea. peple keep send me telegrams which arent abusive but r annoying.

Can't see it being easy to code, though. Either there would have to be a database of nation and blocked nation globally, so that upon sending, a script would run and check to see if there was a block entry, or it would have to run in the TG box every time a telegram arrived, and then bounce the response back. Either way, the server load would be pretty high.

yeah ur right it would be quite popular

Actually, there wouldn't be too much coding for this, and neither would the server load increase significantly. This idea has been proposed before, and I'd like to see it. It is a bit of work though. The biggest coding is for anything that changes the User Interface, and this would. The behind the scenes code is much easier.

I will poke around here though, and recommend the idea again.

Really that seems strange :? I guess I can see why it may be though

It's cool that it may be added though

That's really awesome, Salusa. I really hope this works out... it would be a VERY big improvement.

It's very easy to just drop in some code to fix a bug, or tweak a feature, for a program like this. You just simply pull a block of code out, and stick your replacement in. This is how [violet] improved the daily update (cut about an hour or two off of it) and how the delegate selection was tweaked. However, when the user sees it, it isn't so much a replacement, as an addition. Also, the user interface connects to the backend. In otherwords, they are seperate beasts that work together, this means that anything that changes the UI needs to work properly with the backend as well.

The code to actually implement the TG blocking is trivial, however, the code to allow users to manage it themselves is much more involved.

Can I bump this? Right now I'm being very irritated by an user in one of my puppets, which is not flaming that can be reported to the mods, just irritating little t-grams every day or so that I would really, really love to block...

I don't know if you've given up on this or are still thinking about it, but I thought I'd resubmit my interest in it.

I would TG the nation back, and politely ask for him/her to stop. If they don't, then you have a case to take to the mods.

Fyreheart is correct.

Also, this is being worked on currently. However, that doesn't mean that it will be implemented soon (if at all), just that all that can be done is. Everyone involved in this is a tad busy right now.

Is there a limit? It would help in bulking out my story (http://networkradio.proboards21.com/index.cgi?board=d&action=display&num=1070972906&start=0) (plug, plug, plug) if there is. Does the telegram sender get a message to tell them they've been blocked?

Thanks and sorry for pestering, great much needed feature by the way.

Edit: Sorry the second question was easy, yes it does:

Your telegram bounces back! The so and so of so and so is refusing to accept telegrams wired from Gonzo Hacks.

Thank you [violet]!

I didn't notice any bugs when trying it out though, maybe Salusa is just more picky than me when it comes to technical details :)

One request though: would it be possible to have a link to the Telegram box from the left-top frame? That way it is possible to view the banlist or remove people from it even when you don't have any TMs in your inbox.

]Woo woo! :D It's true. This is awesome :P

mmmm, is there a limit on the nations you can block? I don't know, the regional bans list is limited to 200 (I assume because of server space), perhaps that's the case here as well (the interface is pretty muchly the same).

this is a good idea... since i became a un regional delegate, i was pestered by people posting un resolutions to approve them... i sometimes read some of the proposals, but i don't want people annoying me about reading them...
SalusaSecondus
09-12-2003, 17:02
Currently there is no limit to the size of the list. We might change this later if it proves to be a problem. But like with the regional list, we should wait and see.

One request though: would it be possible to have a link to the Telegram box from the left-top frame? That way it is possible to view the banlist or remove people from it even when you don't have any TMs in your inbox.

That's one of the bugs. Unless you have telegrams, you cannot remove people from your ban list.

I'd doubt that there would be many nations requiring a very large list of nations to be blocked, but for those that do require it, this is a great idea, I just hope that if a nation feels that they need to use this feature that they try replying to the offender nation first to stop, as they are a bother, or at least I'd like to know if I am, so that I would not bother that nation again. With the total number of nations that I talk to every day, it is hard to keep track of who not to talk too at times.

That's one of the bugs. Unless you have telegrams, you cannot remove people from your ban list. Its not exactly a huge problem though, cos, I mean, almost everyone has a puppet or two, you can just send a tm from one nation to the other.

Wow...I post an idea and it gets implemented, go NationStates! helping out the little people..

Also, what about a feature of "block all except those on Dossier"...so you can allow friends ONLY? that'd be cool.....

Ooh, that's an idea . . . . . .
Could you aslo make it so that you can not send telegrams to people whom you have blocked.

I'm sure that otherwise I will have experineces with n00bs sending me not quite flaming or not quite spam telegrams (like n00bs like to do), and then blocking my response, and those of all of my puppets.
Qaaolchoura
16-12-2003, 03:01
Oh yeah, also, could you add an IP-block feature maybe, to block spammers with many puppets?

And yes, I know that this could allow some malicious n00b to drive me up the wall, but I feel that the benefits would outweigh the costs. ANd I could always block the malicious n00b back.
