What's up with my population?

I clicked on a guy's profile before to see how his nation was as I noticed his start date [26th Dec] was very close to mine [24th Dec].

I was amazed to see that he had a far larger population that I do!

This is his profile: http://www.nationstates.net/forum/profile.php?mode=viewprofile&u=21216

His population is in the 1.9 billion, whilst mine is in the 1.8's. I thought your response to issues didn't affect your population?

Any idea? [click my name to see my nation].

They don't. Your population goes up expotencially. So, every day that they're growing and your not, they get an extra exponential growth lead over you. :(

It's really quite random. And if you have ever gone onto vaction mode, then your nation staops growing until you turn vaction mode off. Maybe that did something.

Population growth in NS is not exponential. It is linear.

It's really quite random. And if you have ever gone onto vaction mode, then your nation staops growing until you turn vaction mode off. Maybe that did something.

Unless it's changed recently, population growth does not cease whilst in vacation mode

I heard it does. (?) I could very well be mistaken, I'm gonna go check the facts right now.

Well, I posted that it does on this thread, and neither Salusa nor [violet] contradicted me when they also posted on the thread, so I'm guessing I'm right

...This will stop your nation from receiving new issues and grant it a longer grace period before it gets deleted for inactivity: 60 days

Your right, it doesn't say anything about stoping population growth, sorry about the mistake.

I heard somehwere that there are still a few bugs in the population growth process, and some nations' population might grow quicker or slower than anothers.

With regard to the initial question, population growth is not exact (I am a few days younger than another nation in my region, and for quite a while had a bigger population than him), and this could explain it

It is also quite possible that he received the population bug for a few days, and was never scaled down

It is quite a big difference, I was just checking to see if my terrible, terrible health system had caused it. Thanks anway.

For the first 20 days, population growth is fixed. After that, you gain a random amount from 5 to 7 million per day. It's that simple. A younger nation with a higher population than you either has just gotten slightly higher random numbers, or has had the pop bug at one time (most likely the former, since the difference seems somewhat small). In my experience, issues have had zero effect on this, and I can verify that nations still grow in vacation mode.

First off, the difference between your populations is about 60 million, not even all that close to 100 million (you are in the higher 1.8s and he is in the lower 1.9s). I personally have 2 nations that were founded within an hour of each other (this being one of them) that have a population difference of 25 million. This kind of possible difference expanded over the extra months you've been playing makes it possible to have a 60 million population gap. It's also possible he had the pop-bug for a short period of time.

There is a population bug. Some nations get twice the usual population growth for a while - usually until they change regions, or someone notices and corrects it. And the way you answer issues can affect your pop growth. Pop growth is linear, but increases over time (1 mill the first few days, then 3-7 mill after that)

Eventually, it should even itself out, but it won't if it was the pop. bug.
