Client tools for Nations

18-11-2003, 16:47
Our great nation propose a real project.

The NationStates gives us the posibility to store a limited number of telegrams, we can have a limited number of nations to our dossier and the list goes on. We could build a client tool for those who wants to download and keep the log of all telegrams our other logs.

I did some kind of aplications for my own but we need to make a public plan for this. If we decide on this topic that is necessary this kind of application and Jennifer aproves some kind of conectivity we can start onother topic to disscuss the project managent.

So?! :?:

The Phoebian NS Portal. It has some of what you speak of and some other stuff like auto login which is all very cool. There's no telegram archive yet, but i think it's somewhere on the todo list. The expaned dossier sounds like a good idea and could probably be done quite easily.

I didn't speak about an online application. I reffered to a offline application with a sinc function. Generaly I think we talk about the same problems, but I don't think the online solutin can solve the space problem.

Ah, you mean like Outlook? It 'downloads' the telegrams and archives them?

Would these telegrams and such DL to a single server, or one's own PC?

It's not really an online solution, it's a VB program running on the client's computer with a web browser plugin. It's primary use is making the general playing of nation states far easier (for anyone with more than two puppets it'll save you litterally miniutes every time you play). It stores nothing online, what data it does store (which as far as i know is just login details, forum tags and whether Qaaol mode is on) is kept in the registry. The problem that any telegram archive has is that anything you do must parse the html since any program will not have database access. To make thinks difficult, the telegrams are ordered by time ago measured in minuits, then hours then days. it is difficult to take from that and make a meaningful archiving system.

I am pretty sure that phoebos' archive idea was the same as your's, to download telegrams when you login and store then localy in a .txt file. It would just be integrated into the portal to make it an extention of normal nationstaes activity. (feel free to correct me on any of this Phoebie).

Well, as Neocracy said, this is a feature I've been planning to put into my portal, although I haven't done much work on it recently (ooh, got to add the new forum).

However, if anybody wishes to start a project to create this by itself, I would willingly contribute to the best of my ability. However, the proposing nation appears to be dead, so it's probably too late.

If someone wants to build a client which interacts with NS, I'm probably the best person to contact.
