NationState Names

Picking a name is difficult. A lot of names are "reserved" but when I search for the nation under that name, nothing comes up.
What's the deal? Are these the names of old nations that have ceased to exist as a result of inactivity? And if this is the case, could the names become available again after the nation vanishes? It's almost as bad as picking a screen name on AIM.

Reserved names are names of nations which have died off - either because they weren't accessed for too long or because they were zapped by Mods.
The reasoning is pretty simple: If a nation simply dies off, it might have a "reputation" established on the forums (e.g. Darkskye, Kitsylvania) and anyone taking over that nation would be in a peculiar situation.
If the nation was zapped by the Mods, you wouldn't want to take it over (e.g. Klamath, Marathon, Sheol).

It would be nice if nations that were nixed because of inactivity and perhaps didn't have a whole lot of posts or anything could be used again. It is kind of annoying.

When did Darksye die anywhen?

I was looking through old posts and saw a bunch by him and several nominatinting him for mod (he was the one who got [violet] to remove HTML form the forum), yet until today I never saw him metioned in any current posts.

Maybe they could only be reserved for say, 90 days? Then they could be recycled?

He'd be dead at least 6 months. Very good RPer and one of the nations I looked up to on joining the forums (which I did about 2 months after joining NS itself). There was a big thing in the leadup to his death-by-inactivity with people trying to TG him and maybe even Email him to get him back on, then after his death Wazzu had a space-station RP set on the SS Darkskye.
From memory it was a case of a new job taking up too much time, but I might be wrong.

With things like that...one would wish he could merely sign in every 20 or so days

I created a nation in March which I revived last week. I, for one, am extremely grateful that nation's names are reserved for so long.

After recently trying to create a nation with a fairly well known name ... I couldn't agree more ;)

I proposed this in another similar thread ... here is a conditional statement that ashould get rid of old names that no one would recognize.

((has fewer then ... say .. 20 posts, no one will remember them on the forums) && (has no mod-comments ... I think you guys keep these with dead nations, don't you?) && (died of inactivity ... people DAETed will probably have comments, though, so this might be superfluos) && (has been dead for +1 month .. which is acutally +2 months of inactivity, so they are probably abandoned and forgotten))

Naleth, in terms of comments we keep:

When a nation is alive, we have a list of warnings (things like "warned for spamming, had a multi, being a jerk" etc etc). After we DEAT someone, the best we can get is the message "This nation was deleted by suchandsuch", at which point you hope fervently that suchandsuch can remember why the nation was deleted.

:| Seems to me one of the great things about keeping the information about a nation would be keeping the comments about why it was deleted (and maybe storing some evidence in case it was ever needed).

Well, let's just say that some of the more spectacular ones we know off by heart. Marathon, Sheol and friends are kind of imprinted in our collective brains.
I'm not a massive DEATer myself - as the stats back up - but I'd imagine that those who do the most nation-zapping would at least have a passing familiarity with most of the names in question. Maybe just a case of "oh yeah, he was a spammer." or "she was threatening other players" or whatever.

My two-cents-worth is that if they were deleted for having a rude name, they are permanently unavailable, but if for any other reason, they become available after one year.

The most desirable names are probaably those names of real nations like Suriname and Wales that people would probably like quite a lot.

What if they had in-game but non-forum activities? Then the name could be released and confuse a lot of in-game people.

The only thing I would like changing is for a direct release of the name by the player of the country. For instance, if I let Terminated California cease to exist (which I won't), I'd like to be able to file a Getting Help message from T. California saying "I would like my name to be released upon expiration of my nation."
