Paypal funds

10-11-2003, 01:49
I bet if [Violet] or Max posted a paypal account for NS, many people would donate money. If you did that, and didn't require people to pay, then you would still get enough money to change to an awesome server really quick.

And at the rate of crashes lately, I think a BUNCH of people would donate.

Just an idea.

I threw out paypal because its the onyl one off the top of my head. Even if you just give us a mailingf address to send a check to, MANY would do it... I've seen the attitudes towards the server here... even if you got 20 $5 donations it would be great!

BTW, my brother manages a hardcore webserver, if you are interested, at http://www.victorystudios.com ...dunno if that's what you're looking for though.

But please, on a side note, do NOT make NS 2 must-pay :P

This server is nice, I mean the controls are easy and the options are great. Problem is just the server. Maybe if there was an upgrade or something, you know...a lot of us old people can't learn new tricks.

I'm not asking for a new code or anything, I'm asking for a server with more power... when you have 200 people on at once, most cheapo servers can't handle it! Especially not when they're receiving AND sending.

A change of servers would be optimal.

I was merely suggesting an upgrade, but if a new one is to be found...errr...I would suggest Zeroforum. I moderated a forum for a car-club (Not RPing but a lot more advertising and crap to delete). That server never had problems, but it did cost a little money. It wouldn't be a bad idea to have a banner added to get more money (last resort)...if you think about it, you get a few thousand views a day from mostly youth...pretty good if you are an online-retail or something.

lol not many cheap servers out there that don't make you run Ads, don't make members pay, AND allow tens of thousands of hits a day.

No, I mean a banner, not on the forum but on the actual NationStates page. I know it would be like...horrible and all, but it would certainly bring in money.

Hmm..I wonder how much people would pay to know if violet is Max Barry though...I'll bet they could make a lot, and it wouldn't cost them a thing...

This isn't a cheap server, this is a 2-way Pentium 4 with 1GB of RAM! It has to be to handle 80 million hits per month.

A plesant banner ad on the bottome of the page, that pays by the page view, not by the click pay by click bad, and the voluntary paypal thing is a good idea.

No, this means that you'll be getting replaced by a professional.

lets see... a new server computer... lets say tops 2500 dollars... and i'm probably throwing out a really high number there.

With about 500-1000 active users, if half of them donated 10 bucks, you'd have it. Of course, that's not realistic though. And now, if you post a banner which gives you like a tenth of a penny a hit, then you got like 10,000 a month :P although.. I'm not sure if any banner company is stupid enough to give that much :P

The server probably hasn't been bought, moreso it is rented. A machine like [violet] described probably starts off at $160 a month to rent, then you've got the cost of implementing RAID system and hiring the extra hard disks that needs, and of course all the other things the server needs like a UPS etc. and finally the cost of the bandwidth will probably be another $200.
We don't know if [violet] is a paid worker at Zizak (company that made NS) or whether he/she/it/God is just a freelancer that makes pays, so that's probably another small salary on top of that.
Max must have a severe case of long pockets at the moment

For a real server, spending over 10K is better. I once worked at a uni where I managed 10-30K servers with massive specs.

Well if the film grosses well, mayhbe he'll treat us to one of those, together with a dedicated OC-192 connection :P

Oh good Lord! Not bloody likely. Those run at what? 9Tb/sec?

Didn't even think OC-192 was available to schmoes like us...

A high-end personal computer.

/me does the math.

80 million hits a month is about 31 hits a second, on average. Of course, server load isn't averaged out over time, one also has to consider the peak load.

What's the limiting factor, here? The processor? The bandwidth?

By the way, how many people have actually bought Jennifer Government and Syrup? I've bought and read both; they're good books. Actually buying these books would improve Max's cash flow.

OC-192 is 9,953.28Mbit/s

It's generally what Tier 2 providers use. Your average ISP will probably use an OC-3 which is 155.52Mbit/s.

The backbone connection of the UK is OC-192, although the London Exchange has somelike like a 10gb/s system, which is faster than most processors can go.

London's connection to Europe is about 6gb/s
Just a few interesting facts for you there
