If your nation has a population of 500 million or more, and that exhaustive list of nation types ("Republic", etc) just isn't enough, good news! You are now able to invent your own nation type, by typing it directly into the space provided in your "Settings" page.

The rest of us must content ourselves with the drop-down list. Although, frankly, there's nothing wrong with the list. It seems to be good enough for pretty much every nation on Earth. But NationStates players, of course, have higher standards.

Why only 500? I want to be able to change my pretitle! It propably isn't that hard to let everyone change their title, is it?

It's more or less to reward people who have been playing a long time. ;)

Incidentally, I'm now pleased that I have a custom title for my main puppet, Burninatonia. Go me. :D

LOL! Indeed, the 25,000 largest nations now enjoy the benefits of being able to customize their title. Which means more work for the Game Mods . . . :P

As for me, my other nations have "The Most Serene Republic of" and "The Disputed Territories of" as an essential part of their character, so I will not actually be making use of the feature.

And us Mods still have the perk of extra-long titles. 8)

And now I'm going to be the first to bring up a complaint with it. :lol: It's a minor thing, but you can't have apostrophes in the custom titles. In the standard titles they are allowed (i.e. "People's Republic"), but they produce an error in custom titles (i.e. "People's Empire" is not allowed). It should be a relatively minor change to allow this; any chance of getting it done?

On the whole, though, the custom titles are great. Don't interpret this as being ungrateful. :twisted:

In theory, this is to prevent abuse. Reasoning is that since you need a nation to have been around a few montsh to reach 500M, you wont be so quick to abuse the title privledge for fear of DEATion.

I don't see why it can't be somewhere around 250 million, though...then again, maybe I just want some of my newer puppets to get custom titles faster :P

I don't think it's so much a specific enforcement of the length rule, but a limit on where the site allows settings updates to come from. A local page therefore wouldn't work; nor would posting the values directly to the site, sadly :evil:

Nah, the settings form works from the local computer. That's how I got my custom name when the bug wasn't fixed... When I took out the maxlength tag of the input thing and hit submit, it says: "Nation Title is too long." or something like that...

The byte in position 30 is used as a checksum for the previous 30 bytes (to check for data corruption), and finally the byte in position 31 is used to contain various flags determining the level of trust accorded to the string within. Depending on the bits here it may be executed as straight Perl, executed as a macro, executed as readonly Perl or Macro, displayed in different portions of the site, and can (or can't) be modified by moderators in the mod center.

Thus, there is a total of 32 bytes, and this is 2^5, and powers of two are very easy for the computer to deal with, causing the string to be manipulated quickly and efficiently.

Really long titles are the rewards for moderators. Personally I think that 32 charecters would be perfect (since I am usually 2-4 charecters short on my title ideas), but then of course it would be 36 bits, and 36 ain't a power of two. But your right, beggars can't be chosers.
