No major industry? ATTN: Salusa

30-10-2003, 14:59
My nation seems to have no major industry, despite having an "all-consuming" economy. For example, there is no industry listed for the following issue:

----------------------------------
Fuquay-Varina Decides:

Workers Strike!

Government Acts

The Issue

Workers across the nation have gone out on indefinite strike over what they claim are substandard wages in the industry.

The Debate

1. "We are the backbone of this country, and we demand a fair wage rise!" says union leader Pip Washington. "I don't think a 20% increase over two years is too much to ask. Unless the government forces employers to give us our due, we'll shut this whole industry down! Let's see how well Fuquay-Varina's economy manages without any , huh?

2. "We pay our employees very generous wages," says employer representative Colin Silk. "Especially when you consider that without us, they'd be OUT ON THE STREET. Hear that, you scumbags? OUT ON THE STREET! Anyway, my point is, if you cave in, you make our entire industry uncompetitive. You can't do that in the global marketplace. It'll hurt the whole country. The best solution, economically speaking, would be to relax industrial laws and allow us to fire troublemakers on the spot."

----------------------------------

And the XML feed shows "<MAJORINDUSTRY />".

Any way this could get fixed?

Um... actually, all of your industries suck.

It looks like that issue needs a valid flag for nations that have industry.

Um... actually, all of your industries suck.

Really? Even though "Fuquay-Varina is ranked 1st in the region and 1,373rd in the world for Largest Basket Weaving Sector"? And with an "all-consuming" economy? I've ranked highly in other industries as well. Something very weird is going on here.

Well, you can have a good economy in this game with no industries.

Okay, looking a bit further, and taking a couple logical assumptions, I think I've figured it out. Seems basket weaving's a pretty pathetic sector across the game, so it doesn't take much to excel at it.

I'd go into further detail with numbers and such, but... trade secrets, and all.

Suffice it to say that none of your individual industries appear to be potent enough to qualify as a "major industry".

you really should dismiss it. but if you want a better nation read the pos decisions and choose the 1 that would help to improve your nation

Hack, I'm not quite buying your explanation. Shouldn't whichever industry I am best at be counted as my "major industry", regardless of how much it sucks overall? I'd really like this investigated further; it seems like a bug to me.

Incidentally, "Fuquay-Varina is ranked 1st in the region and 800th in the world for Largest Cheese Export Sector. "

Also, the XML page needs to take this into account. Right now this breaks the formatting.

Well, the XML problem would be something for [violet] or Salusa.

As for even a bad industry being counted as 'major', I can't really comment on that further. I'd need to know more about the coding of the game, again, something for [violet] or Salusa.

My information is a little out of date, and thus I do not know the exact mechanics of what happened, but I know generally, and how to fix it. Yes, all of your industries are so bad that none can qualify as a major industry, even though your total economic rating is quite good. I will have this issue changed.

Oh, as far as I can tell, there is nothing wrong the the XML output. Both
<MAJORINDUSTRY></MAJORINDUSTRY>
and
<MAJORINDUSTRY/> are acceptable ways of denoting an empty field.
