My county is a Democratic Socialism, and I was looking through some other DS countries, and I noticed that their economies were all in the toilet, essentially. Can a DS country have a good economy? I support the Socialist schpiel but I'd like my economy to be better too. WHat's up with that? lol
I was for a while (accidently), and had an excellent economy. It's all a matter of getting enough money before going to socialism.
Well, in RL, a socialist government COULD be good, if everything ran smoothly (which it never does). In the game, however, I think that being a socialist country essentially means your government controls everything, and I'm not sure if that effects how the economy grows or shrinks.

Thr Resi Corp had a Liberal Democratic Socialist (Democratic Socialist with higher political freedoms) nation with a powerhouse economy.
Personally I implode my economy and keep it that way.
My impression is this: Essentially, having a socialist economy is the same as having a low level of economic freedom (out of the three levels, low, medium, and high).
Low levels of economic freedom *seriously* negatively impact your economy. That doesn't mean that your economy will *definitely* be in the toilet, since there are a few things that can improve the economy (I could be wrong, but I think that, for example, funding education will improve your economy) other than increasing economic freedoms. But it means that, all esle being equal, a socialist economy will not be as strong as a capitalist one.
(Gurthark has a socialist economy, and I was at one point able to get it up to "Reasonable," although it's since fallen back to "Fair." It's no challenge, on the other hand, to keep my capitalist puppet nation Bizboz at "Very Strong", although I'm finding it hard to increase it beyond that, for some reason.)
But look on the bright side: All else being equal, a highly capitalist country will not have as good an environment or as equal a society as you will. Everything in NationStates is a tradeoff.
