Phoebian NS Portal

Phoebos

In the wake of Coldorra's NS Browser (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=80852), I have decided to try and undertake a more ambitious project along the same lines; the Phoebian NS Portal. Basically, I want to create a completely customised access point to all of the game, which should enhance its playability in many respects. I may actually turn this project into a piece of coursework...

In any case, what I'd like are suggestions of features people would consider useful. Here's a list of what lines I'm thinking along the lines of so far:

What's here so far

Fully resizable browser window
Forum Tagging (stores list of 'favourite' threads)
Links to find nation/region
Links to GDP Calc
Links to Forums
Multiple Nation Support and fast switching

Possible features in the future

Automatic issues handling (for where you want to pick a specific option every time an issue comes up
Region stats (pulled from the regional data XML feed)- for example, giving details of which nations have the most endorsements
Telegram Archiver
Telegram Blacklisting
Regional Message Board Archiver

All source code will be freely available to those that wish to check for security issues or add their own features (I'd only ask that if you do, you let me see them, so I can learn from others' better coding)

The current version can be downloaded at http://phoebos.co.uk

*edited by Phoebos on 11/13/2003 to update the front page to show the features of the latest version, and to add a quick d/l link*
So... wanted features, please :D

One security issue: the passwords are currently stored in the registry unencrypted. This should be changed with next version, but if any of you are using unsecured computers, it may be advisable to change the passwords before you leave the machine

I did consider doing something similar to this in Flash, getting information from the XML streams, etc, and allowing people to display a sort of dynamic summary of whatever information they wanted in a nice fancy environment, but then I thought it was too much like hard work, so I gave up.

My NS Webby (http://www.vinari.co.uk/ns/)

If you get 404's, don't complain, it's because I'm having prollems with the domain and the server, and I'm also playing around with the site anyway at the moment...

I don't understand how to login.

Going to forum gets me this error:
"Run script error '9':
Subscript out of range"

It doesn't do it if I specify a correct forum title. Are you using an if/then type thing for that? Why don't you add an else for whatever someone might type... and it'll just bring that person to the main forum index.

Good though!

Currently, there is no link to the GDP calc, so I'd grab it before I add one in :P

If you want it to be disabled, though, that's easy enough to do. I'm sure I could make an arrangement for such a distinguished nation as yourself

Well it is great fun, but a couple of bugs:

1. No back button

2. It seems to be based on Internet Explorer

3. When I try to open a new window it gives me an IE window instead of a PNS or even Netscape (which is my default browser) window

4. It has trouble staying logged in and can not remember passwords.

Also, a link to the proposal list would be greatly appreciated.

By version 4 I bet there is a news item on this. :P
Phoebos
18-10-2003, 10:42
1. Eek... with all the things I'd been working on, I completely neglected to add standard browser navigation functions. At the moment, they can be acheived by right clicking and selecting 'back'... I'll add the buttons themselves in the next update
2. Yep, it is. Is this a bug? :P
3. I know... ideally, I want a new PNP (I prefer that acronym) window to open. Currently I'm not sure how to make it so. This will be changed soon as I work out how to do it
4. Hmm. I'm not sure what you mean, here. It can certainly remember passwords... you set them up in the world-Nations box and then use the Nations drop down box to select and log into one. The process is a little unintuitive, so I'll describe it here:

Go to World-Nations
Hit New Nation
Type nation name
Go back to world-Nations (should be fixed so you don't have to do this next version)
select nation
Type password
Hit 'Store Nation'

Then in the main window, select a nation from the nations list, and hit go
18-10-2003, 11:10
Update... a problem with the store tag function that would result in it being stored incorrectly if there were other parameters passed is now fixed

18-10-2003, 11:35
I have a suggestion; rather than use the default VB internet browser plugin, you could have a preference which could make it use a netscape one instead.

Downside is (at least, as far as I can work it out) that you'd have to have two sets of forms...
Phoebos
18-10-2003, 14:48
Yes, and I may well also have to rewrite a bunch of the code for interaction with the browser.

I won't dismiss the idea offhand, but it's highly unlikely to happen, and certainly not anytime soon. There are other features I feel will be far more useful

NEWS:

Version 1.01 is up; fixing most errors from the previous version, and adding in all the basic features that I left out in order to get version 1 released. It can be found in the same location:
http://members.lycos.co.uk/utterlymindless/files/nationstates.exe
Those of you upgrading from version 1 may find it doesn't work. If you're comfortable editing the registry, browse to hkey_current_user/software/VB and VBA Program Settings/NationStates/Progopts and delete the key 'firstuse'.

If you're not, or you can't be bothered, download http://members.lycos.co.uk/utterlymindless/files/update.exe, which does it for you. I suggest deleting it after running it

Err. . .
Phobeos, when I try to store nation it closes the program on me.
Phoebos
18-10-2003, 17:13
The storing nation bit is a bit temperamental... the process is weird, and I need to change it. For now, here's what you need to do:

Go to World-Nations
Hit New Nation
Type nation name
Go back to world-Nations
select nation in the drop down box
Type password
Hit 'Store Nation'
Close the program (sorry)
Open it again
Your nation will be in the nations list

Note: You can store multiple naitons and then close the program to avoid having to do it repeatedly

User friendliness is something I need to work on

First off could you git rid of the first link?

I'll explain what you should do, but the link distorts my laptop screen. and you now no longer need it.

Anywhen, when you reach http://members.lycos.co.uk/utterlymindless/

You then simply add "files/update.exe" onto the end of it.

They want you going through their members' homepage first.

I had intended to wait until the end of the week to release the next version (1.1), which should include some of the more advanced features I'm hoping to include. However, for a number of reasons; primarily being the new forum and the unintuitive interface with regard to adding nations, I've released an interim version (v.1.02)

You can find it here:

I'll try to roll out a stable version within the next few days. They may well now be made into additional programs that can integrate with the original portal.

I'm somewhat loath to write an autoupdate routine... I'd rather just let people download new version if they wish, rather than have them foisted upon them. This would also allow them to check the code (if they so desired) to ensure I hadn't sent any malicious bits along with the update.

Firstly, after much thought, I've decided to give it a home. So far, it's been ad hoc, and people are probably using multiple versions that may or may not be completely out of date. So all things related to the portal can be found at http://phoebos.co.uk

Secondly, version 1.1 has been released. Guess where you can download it from?

Now on to the suggestions. ... I have a bunch of those, too (actually, I'll probably take a crack at learning VB first so I can try to make them myself).

Do we need to DL this to open the Portal?

Yeah, you need that to uncompress it. But any free .rar decompresser will do.

This threw up an error and died the first time I ran it, but worked fine the second time. It's very cool!

I have a few tips that you might find useful:
If you replace "page" with "target" in an URL, you get the properly framed NationStates page -- that is, with the banner up the top and the sidebar menu on the side. So you might want to do this with most of the "shortcuts" to places like the UN.
The link to the news page is now "/news/", not "/cgi-bin/index.cgi/page=news".
The link "...index.cgi/page=display_region" (ditto if you replace "page" with "target") defaults to displaying whichever nation you're logged in as. You might find this handy to create a button to display the nation's home page.
The same concept applies to "display_region" -- it defaults to display the region your logged-in nation belongs to.

I'll get this onto the News page either now or, if you'd prefer, after you've tweaked it. :)

Okay, this is very cool.

One thing though. Is there any way to have a pull down list of frequently viewed regions or nations? Also to get multiple windows for different threads or national pages?

Spoffin, there is as yet no history, but it's something I'll consider implementing in the next incarnation of this... which is going to be a little different

[violet], the errors regarding the first time use were fixed a few versions back, but I've implemented your suggestions regarding page/target, and changed the news link as appropriate.

Version 1.2 has been released, incorporating these changes, and can be found at http://www.phoebos.co.uk

If it pleases you, I would be honoured to have this mentioned on the news page.

Okay, once SalusaSecondus gives it the thumbs'-up, we'll get a News item about it happening.

Really good work, Phoebos!

I still haven't DLed it, sorry though I do think this is a very neat thing. As to posting it in the News, Is the Server it's on trust worthy enough not to worry about it getting hacked, or is Max going to host it on his server.

Sorry, no not enough about technology, simply asking.

Forum navigation issue. No URL to the thread you're on, so providing a link for someone else becomes tricky.

Regional and national navigation though: excellent.

Spoffin, if you are using Windows you can simply right click anywhere on the page and click "Properties," it will show you the url and you can select, copy, and paste it when you need to.

Yeah, but that's a pain...

Maybe a 'Copy URL to Clipboard" button or similar somewhere?

At the top of a thread in the forum is the title of the thread. If you right click on this and select 'copy shortcut' you get the url to the thread.

I don't really want to add more bits in as I'm trying to give Salusa time to 'vet' it, as it were

Don't worry about me, I'll grab whatever you have sometime in the near future to examine it. I haven't looked at your code in a while due to confusion.

On a slight aside:

I'm not adding further features until I start work on the next full version (going to be a complete rebuild, from a new angle), but, in the meantime, Naleth has been modding. He's added in some great new features:

- 'Notes' section, for storing of random articles of NS related notes
- Automatic addition of a signature to posts (should be one on this, if it works)
- Storage of data in an 'ns.dat' file, rather than the registry (some is still stored in the registry'

It's hosted on my site (http://phoebos.co.uk), so go and take a look.

Shamneless bump.

Also, what ever happened to the news item?

SalusaSecondus has to verify the code first.

So unusual for me to be waiting for Sal to do something! Must... enjoy... moment...

I've emailed a copy on to [violet]. The code that I've reviewed appears to be clean (though I may have missed something). Unfortunately, I cannot verify the binary right now because my VB install is messed up.

If you download a copy of the program from his site and want to make sure that it is the same that I reviewed, and you have PGP, you can check it again the sig that I have below (I'll also try to add an MD5 later).

Try as I might, I can't find Naleth's modded version on the dl site. I know he took off the link for a bit to work on some things, but did he put it back up? If not, when can we expect it, and if so, where is it?

Thanks in advance.

It should be there now. I think I forgot to put it up after one of the edits I made. I noticed a few hours later that it wasn't (after working on it a bit more), and uploaded it again.

Naleth, it's great. Only one problem. Every time I try to go to the NationStates Forum, I get an error message.

"Runtime error 13

Type mismatch."

Is it an error in the code or do I simply have to change a setting or something? (Tried disabling Sigs.)
Naleth

Hmm ... So it does ... I'll look into this (don't ever go to the NS forum .. didn't notice).
