Tech [and Mod] Forum FAQ (New Version)

Since these are asked frequently, I'm posting this so that even if most new players don't read this, it gives the mods one more excuse to lock threads. ( )

(Thanks for the sticky Siro. :P )

If I see anything else asked a lot then I shall add it.

Tech Forum Frequently Asked Questions

Tech Forum Frequently Asked Questions About Gameplay
How do I Declare War?/How do I trade?
It is almost all RPed. Read the stickies in The International Incidents and Nation States Forum.

How do I invade?
I'm never clear on what this is asking. If you mean declare war see above, if you mean region crash contact Ackbar, and if you mean take over people's nations, you can not unless they are new and you lie to them(which as Sirocco pointed out can put you in very hot water).

"My nation is categorized as an Anarchy, but it says I have a huge government!!! WHY?!?!" IS NOW: My nations description is saying contradictory things!

The nation description is broken down into primarily 3 paragraphs. Your first paragraph contains some information about your population, a key feature of your government (these are usually very hard to loose once you get them), and a description based entirely on your UN type (which can cause a lot of problems). The second paragraph starts off describing your government with some adjectives (similar to the population paragraph) and lists your prioraties and major industries, as well as tax rate. The third paragraph contains some strings directly based on your last five issue choices and some info about your national animal and curency.

The problem is that all of these adjectives and descriptions are based on different things. So, for example, a popular complaint used to be that a nation that was listed as an Anarchy had no government in the first paragraph, but an "omni-present" government in the second. This was because the player had met the requirements to become an anarchy (none of which have to do with government size), but had done so through masive government intervention.

The solution? Well, there really isn't one. You can take whichever of the contradictory descriptors you want to be the "correct" description of your nation, but the game would practecally have to be rewritten from the ground up to get these contradictions out, and it won't be happening.(by Naleth (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/page=display_nation/nation=naleth) )
Tech Forum Frequently Asked Questions About Game Mechanics

What is is this site coded it?
Perl for the game and PHP for the forums. (by SalusaSecondus (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Salusa Secondus))

Tech Forum Frequently Asked Questions About Flags

How did such and such get such a large flag?
The server is stupid. It does not go by size, only by file size, despite the restrictions mentioned.

My flag is below 6 KB, but it will not upload.
Try saving it as a GIF or shrinking it. If you do not like the effect ask 1 Infinite Loop to tweak it or the NationStates Flag Service (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=75398) to make you a new one.

My flag isn't updating after I upload a new one/It says I have outstanding issues, but I've answered them/1000 other problems about pages not looking like what they are supposed to.

This is a problem with caching. The pages/flag/whatever is updating fine, but your browser is using an older version of the page when it is displayed. Caching is something your browser does to save bandwidth (especially for 56k users, who need all the bandwith they can get) by not re-downloading the same files every time it visits a page. Users with slower connections can use ctrl+f5 (force full refresh) to re-download the page just this once while keeping caching enabled if they want.(by Naleth (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Naleth))

Tech Forum Frequently Asked Questions About Customizable Features

Can we add national leader/anthems/capitals?
Not likely in this version.
Probably in NS2 though.

Can we add a new customizable field of another sort then?
Look how long it took them to turn a drop down menu into a text box for a third of NS. Now you want a whole NEW field? Not likely.
Probably in NS2 though. (by Naleth (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Naleth))

Mods can you change my nation name for me?
First off, this is a Mod Forum question, for all that I see it in Tech, secondly, no, they can not. They used to be, but it caused all kinds of problems so that [violet] disabled it.

How do I change my nation prefix?/Could you change my nation prefix mods?
No, you must have a population of 500+
And as Sirocco pointed out, in the "Settings" you change chose from the preassembled list

Tech Forum Frequently Asked Questions About The UN

The FAQ says that I can have only one UN nation. How many non UN nations may I have?
As many as you want. Nations that are not your main nation are reffered to as "puppets" If your main nation is not in the UN then the nation that you have in the UN is called a "UN Puppet"

What does being a Delegate do?
It allows you to endorse proposals, helping them reach resolution status, It gives you one extra vote for each member of your region who endorses you, and, if your region has no founder then it allows you access to regional control. Also the founder may chose to grant you access to regional control, although it is not recommended as it makes you an easy target for region crashers.

I have the most endorsements in my region, so how come I am not the delegate?
You have to wait for the UN server update (the main one, there is one around six in the afternoon, which only deletes old nations, proposals, and regions) around 5-6 in the morning EST.

I've got a new e-mail address. Will my UN status be affected if I put it in my settings page?
Nope.

What happens when there is a tie for the UN delegate position?
Depending on the situation, the game uses one of two proccesses to determine who the new UN delegate will be.
1) If the current UN delegate is one of the people involved in the tie, then they retain delegateship. You have to beat the current delegate to become delegate of a region.
2) If the current UN delegate is not involved in the tie (or there is no current delegate) then whichever nation has been in the region longest will win the tie. (by Naleth (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Naleth))

NEW!!! Is UN status retained when my nation is resurrected?
No, all nations resurrected are automatically resigned from the UN. However, you can re-apply your nation as long as you don't have any other UN nations.[/quote]

Tech Forum Frequently Asked Questions About Forum Problems

Why does the server keep telling me "Page Cannont Be Displayed" while I'm browsing the forums? This is a problem with the rather heavy amount of traffic on the forum (especially at peak hours) being above the load the forum was designed to handle. Everyone gets this, just give it a few minutes and it'll be all better. Until the next time. (by Naleth (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Nalath))

How Do I post pictures?
Place the url of an image in between the tags. (by NuMetal (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=NuMetal))

WHAT HAPPENED TO MY POLL? ITS GONE!!! / Why does my poll have a whole bunch of invalid options?
There is a problem with the polling in phpBB where if you edit the first post in the topic, then the topic half-forgets about the poll and it doesn't show up anymore. If you edit the topic again, then the poll will
show up again with 5 new options (possibly the same ones if you didn't try to change the options when you edit again).

But don't worry! There is a way to fix this! There is a way to remake the poll with only valid choices (no duplicates) but you have to lose all the current votes if you do. You just delete the poll (with the 'Delete Poll' check box in the edit screen) and remake it. That simple. (by Naleth (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Naleth))

Hey I have a great Idea! Lets split [i]International Incidents into past/present/future (and possibly fantasy) timelines forums.
No. This has been discusssed in depth and it will not happen in the near future as it would require too much moderation. If they decide that it is a possibility then Salusa will announce it.

I have two nations and whenever I am logged into one it logs me into the other. Turn off auto login and delete your "Autologin" cookie if it still happens.

Why does the "search" function sometimes not work and give me an error saying "Could not insert search results"?
Remember what we said about heavy server load? Well, there are so many users that sometimes two people hit the search button at the exact same time. When this happens, one of the searches will fail in this manner. Don't worry. Just wait a bit and try again. It will fix itself. (by Salusa (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=SalusaSecondus))

NEW!!! Why does the forum search have such limited options?
The word search function slowed down the already creaking forums by quite a lot. Thus it was removed to remove a bit of strain on the server. This will be changed at some point after we move to Jolt. (by Flashia (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Flashia))

Tech Forum Frequently Asked Questions About Issues

I keep getting the same issues.
There were only 39 different issues, and each nation only qualified for a few of them. [violet] made an interface which allows game mods to edit player-submitted issues, but, new players still only get the first 30 (not the nine old player-submitted issues even) for their first couple of weeks. THere are now almost 150, yet the older ones still seem to repeat more often.

Can we get more issues per day? Two does not cut it for me.
Unless you get the pop bug(in which case you get four) than you can only get two per day on each nation. Most people get bored with it after a while, but if not, that is what puppets are for.

[point made by Naleth (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Naleth)]Also, chances are if you do get the pop bug, the mods will hunt you down and fix it fairly quickly. Basically - make more puppets.

Mod Forum Frequently Asked Questions About Moderation

I hate my nation, and want it deleted. Can the mods delete my nation for me?
No. The mods have decided not to delete nations for people. You have to let it die by not logging in for 28 days or sixty days on vacation mode. It doesn't matter of course because you won't be meaning to log into it again anywise. (by The Basenji (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=The_Basenji))

Oh! I know! I'll make my unwanted nation do something like spam up the forums, flame, or break the rules to get it deleted!
Very bad idea. Such an action would get you into very serious trouble. You may even be IP banned from the site, and never be able to come here again! (by The Basenji (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=The_Basenji))

How can I get a nation back from the dead?
First of all, this is a moderation issue not a tech issue. But don't go over to the Moderation forum and start posting just yet. Read this sticky (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=60666) first. Also, if you don't remember the nations password, the mods can't reset it for you.(by Naleth (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Naleth))

NEW!!! Is UN status retained when my nation is resurrected?
No, all nations resurrected are automatically resigned from the UN. However, you can re-apply your nation as long as you don't have any other UN nations.[/quote]
(by Goobergunchia (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/page=display_nation/nation=Goobergunchia))

Tech Forum Frequently Asked Questions About Regions

How do I create a region?
On your (current) region's page, it says "Tired of life in (region name)? Then move to a new region! ". Click "move to a new region". Then click "Create a New Region". Enter a name and a Factbook Entry, then hit "Create Region". You will be in a new region! (by Goobergunchia (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Goobergunchia))

Or click here (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/page=create_region).

What does regional control do?
It allows you to bar/unbar delegate access to regional control, ban/unban members, evict members, update your factbook entry, and password protect your region.

(by Naleth (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Naleth)
)

What region should I move to?
Mine.

Tech Forum Frequently Asked Questions About Miscellaneous Stuff

Who is [violet]?

When do the updates run? What do they do? How long do they take to complete?

There are two update times, which (regardless of any official terms) I call the "UN Update" and the "Off-hand Update." During both updates, any issue choices made by your nation are processed, UN Delegate powers can be granted (not 100% sure about this - Sal?), and for nations set to two issues per day (or per weekday), an issue is placed in there issue box. Extra things happen only during only the UN Update. As you may guess, these things have to do with the UN. First off, the delegateship plate (UN Memeber/UN Delegate under your name) can only change hands during this time. Additionally, at the end of the update, all UN matters are proccessed. This means that all proposals slated to expire that day expire, it either passes or fails at the end of the update. One final thing that happens is that the UN rankings are updated during the update (as it cycles through the regions) and the new list is posted at the very end of the update. If the resolution at vote ends that day, though, votoing ends during the offhand update, not the UN.

Update times:
UN: ~1PM PST - ~4:00PST in my experiance - Exact ending time is variable, but can be verified by the new UN Rankings being published.
Offhand: Ends at ~5PM EST

Miscellaneous Bits O' Info

Editing Posts
It's because, just like deleting a post, if no one has responded, you can get away with editing sneakily. (by TROUSRS (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=TROUSRS))(Which I have been doing this since August I may add. :P )

Also, moderator edits don't show up that way. Although they do if they edit their own posts. (by Phoebos (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Phoebos))

Also it seems to me (judging by several incidences) that if you close the window and way a while, even if your post is not responded to then you still get the "Edited by:" notation. The way to avoid this is to copy it, delete the post, and create a new post.

I'd correct a few spelling mistakes you've got there Qaa... and not all war is RPed, some nations regioncrash.

and if you mean take over people's nations, you can not unless they are new and you lie to them.

Which I must emphasise is very strictly against the rules.

How do I change my nation prefix?/Could you change my nation prefix mods?

There is a list of already available prefixes in your 'settings' page in the sidebar. But, as Qaa mentioned, mods like me get custom ones. :)

A delegate can still access regional control if there is a founder, as long as the founder has granted him/her access.

One thing about the flags. Most people who complain about the size cap have a problem because they use "Save as..." and then pick .jpg (using photoshop). The problem can be fixed by using "Save For Web..." Which leaves out a whole bunch of extra stuff, making the flags much smaller. It also giver you a better quality slider.

One more thing:

How do I Declare War?/How do I trade?
It is all RPed. Read the stickies in The International Incidents and Nation States Forum.

New question! (I've answerec this twice in the past week, so its asked frequently enough)

"My nation is categorized as an Anarchy, but it says I have a huge government!!! WHY?!?!"

There are more then just the three stats displayed involved in creating the description of your nation. There are tons and tons of hidden stats (like enviroment, for example) that determine things like the UN rankings. The stat for 'government involvement' is seperate from the three stats that determine your UN category. If you want a true anarchy (no omnipresent government) then you will have to maintiain about the same current balance of the three public stats, while also reducing government involvement in the nation (or the stat that governs it at least).

New FAQ question I've given out the answer to far to many times!

WHAT HAPPENED TO MY POLL? ITS GONE!!!
or
Why does my poll have a whole bunch of invalid options?

THere is a problem with the polling in phpBB where if you edit the first post in the topic, then the topic half-forgets about the poll and it doesn't show up anymore. If you edit the topic again, then the poll will show up again with 5 new options (possibly the same ones if you didn't try to change the options when you edit again).

But don't worry! There is a way to fix this!

There is a way to remake the poll with only valid choices (no duplicates) but you have to lose all the current votes if you do. You just delete the poll (with the 'Delete Poll' check box in the edit screen) and remake it. That simple.

And another one! This one covers two issues, an older one about passwords and one that I just saw about emails.

I changed my password or email address, but the forum still wants my old password or sends to my old email address.

When you sign up for NS, a script creates your forum account using the information (name, pword, email) that you entered. The problem is, when you change settings in your NS account, it doesn't change them in the forum account since the two are storred seperatly. There is no script for this since having one would increase the load on the forums even more (something I think most of us know we don't want), not because it was overlooked. At the moment I'm not aware of any way to actually change your forum settings after registration. You'll just have to keep that email address open or remember that password :P

I didn't mention it. I think it was Hack that made the point, to be honest (about mods not being allowed to grant their own puppets custom names); I simply noticed your FAQ still claimed they were allowed to do this

Oh, right, yeah I was waiting for Hack's response, since it contradicted what I heard from another mod, but I was a n00b then, and I guess that the rules for GMs have changed now that they have so many.

I'm, suprised that Hack didn't just do it himself, but then again, I guess that that is not his style.

Hey! That nation has a custom title and isn't a mod! How come?

A long while back, some nations discovered that they could change their title because of a loophole in the coding. It has since been fixed, and the nations were allowed to keep their titles.

Another one (that I'm supprised isn't on here yet)

Why does the server keep telling me "Page Cannont Be Displayed" while I'm browsing the forums?

This is a problem with the rather heavy amount of traffic on the forum (especially at peek hours) being above the load the forum was designed to handle. Everyone gets this, just give it a few minutes and it'll be all better. Untill the next time.

Side note: you may want to have something interesting to do while you wait for the server to stop acting up. Especially if you're an addict and minutes of forced withdrawal make you contimplate becoming a serial killer.

My flag is below 6 KB, but it will not upload.

Try saving it as a GIF or shrinking it. If you do not like the effect ask the NationStates Flag Service (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=75398) to tweak it or make you a new one.

(Corinte is no longer an active player)

Can we add a new customizable field?
Look how long it took them to turn a drop down menu into a text box for a third of NS. Now you want a whole NEW field? Not likely.
Probably in NS2 though.

For a full list of stuff in NS2 clicky-clicky (http://www.nationstates.net/ns2thoughts.html).
Generalized to all fields. And while I'm here, might as well put in some humor.

Can we get more issues per day? Two does not cut it for me.
Unless you get the pop bug (in which case you get four), you can only get two per day on each nation. Most people get bored with it after a while, but if not, that is what puppets are for.

Also, chances are if you do get the pop bug, the mods will hunt you down and fix it fairly quickly. Basically - make more puppets.
There were a few typos .. but while I'm here ... ;)

You might want to generalize the "My nation is categorized as an Anarchy, but it says I have a huge government!!! WHY?!?!" question to be a question about all "National Spotlight" contradictions.

Some info from TMGH:

Basically, the first paragraph has a few pieces of information: Any permanentt effects you've caused (ie: "Military service is compulsory"), or major effects (ie: "is a barren inhospitible wasteland"); Nation name and population; A pre-set blurb that is 100% tied to your UN ranking. In your case, I believe that's Corporate Police State (it's that or Compulsory Consumerists, I'm too lazy to check).

The second paragraph has the effects of your issues, and the third paragraph lists the direct "quips" for your last 4 issues (ie: "Citizens are barcoded to keep track of their movenments"), crime levels, plus national animal and currency.

FAQ question about caching problems may be in order.
My flag isn't updating after I upload a new one/It says I have outstanding issues, but I've answered them/1000 other problems about pages not looking like what they are supposed to.
(change that title...I can't think of a good one that doesn't involve the word 'caching' and would therefore be missed)
For users that have fast connections, you may wish to disable caching using the method that follows. Users with slower connections can use ctrl+f5 (force full refresh) to re-download the page just this once while keeping caching enabled if they want.

For IE Users: In the "Tools" drop down menu, choose "Internet Options." On the window that pops up, push the "Settings" button (there is only one, it will be in the middle box about temporary internet fies). On that new new window, there is a bulleted list of choices, set this to "Every Visit to page" ... the top option. You may also want to reduce the cahce size if it's above 50 megs (especially if you have a small hardrive). More then that is just unneccisary.

I'll have to find a way to shrink it but that'll be useful. I was trying to change the flag on one of my puppets yesterday and only noticed the note on that the fourth time around. I knew that it involved clearing the catche, but had no idea how.

Time for a seperate category on flags methinks. 8)

I think that I'll leave that out. Netscape is still in wide usage (*glances at long row of "N"s on his taskbar*) and even if you added one for Netscape you would still need one for Lynx, Firebird, Mozilla, etc. (And I seem to recall hearing that AOL uses its own browser, we know that there are a lot of AOL iusers on this site)

How can I become my regions founder?
There is only one way to become a regions founder: FOUND IT! You have to create the region out of empty nothingness.

But my region doesn't have a founder/has a dead founder and we want to get it one
If you have an old region with no founder or your founder died, then to get a new founder you must get everyone to move out of the region and re-create it after it is deleted at the next update. DO NOT become delegate and boot them - that's called greifing, and it'll get you in trouble. The delegate could (and probably should) password protect the region on the way out, though.

The mods have said they will only appoint founders in the most extreme cases.

One more, for the "Tech Forum Frequently Asked Questions About Regions " section...It's been asked so often (albeit not always in the Tech Forum), that it should probably be in here.

What happens if someone is kicked out of the Rejected Realms?
The Rejected Realms is a special region- since it is the destination of all ejected nations, ejecting anyone from it would be futile; After all, where would they go?

As a result, the ejection section of the Rejected Realms' regional control is turned off permanently and irrevocably. It is impossible to eject anyone from that region.

On a similar note, passwording is also disabled permanently in the Rejected Realms, as well as in the five Pacific regions where new players start the game.

Are those features greyed out, or does it give you an error message, or does it just not do anything (like with a founder trying to bar delegate access outside of the region).

It'd still be alive if you didn't turn on vacation mode. You have to leave it 4 weeks before it dies of natural causes.

The link BBCode isn't working (there should be an underscore in Sal's name, not a space).

Posible additions (although I doubt anyone would read the first one):

"t3h m0d5 5uX0r" (I have a complaint about the mods)

Complaints about the mods should be sent to admin@nationstates.net where they can be confidentially reviewed (as in outside the reach of those nasty, powermongering, fascist-commy, dictator-hippy leftist-right-wing, power hungry mods) by [violet] and/or Max.

I want to change my position on X issue

All of the issues can eventually be repeated (although some choices can make it so you won't get the issue untill you undo them in another issue - like banning elections).

Your decisions on past issues are not recorded. When you make a decision, your nations stats are changed based on that decision and the game forgets what your choice was. When issues start repeating, if you choose the same option the stats will move even farther in the direction that choice pushes them. If you choose a different option, then your stats will change according to that option.

(note: With a new proccess called "issue treeing" the choices on past issues can be directly recorded, but I don't think any issues in the game acctually use this yet)

Although I like TG, I don't like his regional directory (hint: if you only put really big regions on, it is going to make it even harder to get it up to that point, and after he became a forum mod I stopped work on my own directory{much like a cross etween TG and Spof's}, since I had no chance in hell of getting it stickied if I were to finish and post it), but I'll but the Yellow Pages on there.

So sue me - this is the first time I've looked at this thread  I also have not read the whole thread, so bear with me here :?

NEW!!! What is is this site coded it? Coded in.

Probably in NS2 though. Want to write out NationStates 2 at least the first time? Make it a little clearer for the n00bs...

First off, this is a Mod Forum question, for all that I see it in Tech, secondly, no, they can not. They used to be, I think you should probably change this to "they used to be able to," what with the way you structered the question...

If the current UN delegate is not involved in the tie (or there is no current delegate) then whichever nation has been in the region longest will win the tie. (by Naleth (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Naleth)) This is not the case. In my region, I know for an absolute fact that nation A was in the region longer than nation B and C. However, nation D came in there, gave nations B, C, and A an endorsement (in that order), and nation B became the delegate with one endorsement. So I am almost positive that it's however long you've had the endorsement - but even if that's not the case, it isn't length of time in region. Nation A was there at least three days before nation B.

2) If the current UN delegate is not involved in the tie (or there is no current delegate) then whichever nation has been in the region longest will win the tie. (by Naleth (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/target=display_nation/nation=Naleth)
) It's mentioned twice, in case you decide to change it...

Well, 2 is how it should work, and I'm pretty confident that it does.Gah, well, it didn't happen that way in the region I founded (this was all two or three weeks ago).

Salusa explained that there was a bug that gave delegacy to the nation that had been in the region for the shortest time that gets delegacy.

Salusa explained that there was a bug that gave delegacy to the nation that had been in the region for the shortest time that gets delegacy. But C came in after B, and B still got the delegacy. I know this because nothing else was happening on NS around this time, and I sat around and watched my region forever. The only connection I could find between B and the delegacy was that D endorsed him first (ok, so I'm not positive on that one, but I did send D a telegram and he replied something like "I think I endorsed B first").... oh well.

Can somebody edit the first post with the answer to this question?

When do the updates run? What do they do? How long do they take to complete?

I'm curious as to when the UN proposal list updates. It seems quite advantageous to try to submit proposals so that they'll eventually end up on page one. When you have 16 or 20 proposals submitted in a single cycle, even the best of proposals get lost in the shuffle back on page 4 or 5. I'd like to target the occasional proposal to hit page one, eventually.

This means that all proposals slated to expire that day expire and if the resolution at vote ends that day, it either passes or fails at the end of the update. One final thing that happens is that the UN rankings are updated during the update (as it cycles through the regions) and the new list is posted at the end of the update.

Update times:
UN: ~1PM PST - ~3:30PST in my experiance
Offhand: No idea, the server is to busy and it's much harder to benchmark anyway (nothing like proposals expiring to tell you its over). Likely it's about 12 hours after the UN update.

My first problem is the pay-to play plan is a good plan but for those who are to poor to pay, like myself. . it would put a lot of us out of this game and it would only make this game hurt in the long run. when you make paying for the game hundreds of people will not play.

The next problem is a good set of rules for a war if one is made in NS2. does not exist. nor one for this NS1.

Define "a good set of rules". NS1 follows free-form RPing for war - unless you're talking region invasion - and it has rules which are both readily available and perfectly adequate. Region invasion has rules which have been decided upon by mods and while some players don't much care for them, they are at least workable.

If the resolution at vote ends that day, though, votoing ends during the offhand update, not the UN.

By the way Highburrete, this thread is mainly for posting new questoins to add to the FAQ, don' be afraid to start your own thread when you have a question (if you couldn't find the answer here first).

On that note, while I'm here, I think this question needs an update, since so many people have been asking almost the same question with different words:

"My nation is categorized as an Anarchy, but it says I have a huge government!!! WHY?!?!"

Proposed new question:

My nations description is saying contradictory things!

As Naleth told Highburette, if you've read this thread, the game FAQ (where Highburette's question was answered), and the Tech forum, and still don't find an answer, feel free to start a new thread.

As for your question,

[code:1:36224eda63]http://www.nationstates.net/forum/posting.php?mode=[mode]&[p OR t OR f]=[post OR topic OR forum#][/code:1:36224eda63]
The post has various modes: quote, reply, edit, delete, and newtopic are the modes that I know of. They may be others, I'm not sure. quote, edit, and delte all use p and post #s, reply uses t and topic #s, and newtopic uses f and forum #s.

Does this help, or did I just make the confusion worse?

Only the mods can do it. Whether the'll actually pull a message seems to depend on how much time they have and whether they have the mod center open.

If the message is spam you can report it to the Getting Help Page under "spamming."

About half the time that I do so I get a voice of telegram that the sender has been warned. This means that as most mods don't send many telegrams, the sender is likely warned in most cases.

And since they have the mod center open, perhaps if you ask the mods politely. . . (I don't know, I've only asked for a message pulled once, and that was when we were having a conversation via telegram.)

Because it's a bug which Salusa is certain that he's fixed. I think that the problem might be that it's whoever gets the mostendorsements first. Somebody reported it at one point, he said he'd look into it, and apparent;y it's still a problem.

I think the forum section needs to be updated now we've moved to Jolt. I have a few things you could add to the forum section:

I can't view images/signatures/avatars
Go into your User CP (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/usercp.php) > Edit Options > Scroll down to the "Thread Display Options" category > Check the boxes labelled Show Signatures, Show Images and Show avatars > Save Settings

How do I post smilies?
There are two methods:
1. Profile (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/usercp.php) > Edit Options > Scroll down to the bottom of the page to the Miscellaneous Options section > Change Message Editor Interface to Standard Editor using the drop down menu > Save Changes. Now whenever you type a message you will have clickable smilies at your disposal.

2. Go Here: http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/misc.php?s=&action=faq for a list of all the smilies and the code needed to insert them in posts.

How do I get an avatar?
Jolt provides avatars for an annual payment of £10. View this thread for more information:

"My flag is below 6 KB, but it will not upload."
... needs the flag link changed to: http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=281405

"Can we add a new customizable field of another sort then?"
... the NS2 thoughts link no longer works (don't know if it still exists or didn't get moved or what)

"Is UN status retained when my nation is resurrected?"
... get rid of the [/quote] tag at the end.

"I have two nations and whenever I am logged into one it logs me into the other."
... needs a line break between question and answer

"How can I get a nation back from the dead?"
... needs the Resurrection Sticky link changed to: http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=277695

"Who is [violet]"
... needs the sticky link changed to: http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=275311

"What does such and such mean?"
Sirocco's Guide new link: http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=281050

"Where is the famous memberlist?"
It was essentially lost in the move, the full Jolt forum member list is available at http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/memberlist.php but NS probably won't have it's own again.

note: Soviet Democracy no longer updates these.
Other one is kinda old, don't feel like searching.

Can I add a question, very relevant to Gameplay:

How can I tell exactly when a region has updated, and the battle for delegacy is over for another 24 hours?

(My previous marker - "UN update pending, delegate has XX verified endorsements" - no longer seems to be reliable.)

So a region with just one member won't have a delegate? What happens if there are numerous nations but just the one UN nation? Does that region then have no delegate? Are you in danger of a region take-over if you don't have a delegate?

The only thing we have changed about the update is the order.

Thats odd.

Can you tell me, does the delegate in a region change (assuming that a change is going to take place) at the same time that the regional rankings update? And do the issues for nations in that region come at the same time also?

Sorry I am not sure if this is the place for this, and I probably cant do anything about it anyway but it dosent hurt to try. About 3 days ago I
created a new nation, The Kingdom of Havaii, based on Hawaii as that name
is taken, on my Profile it says renowned for its barren inhospitable climate,
I did not do anything to make it that way like I did with Santa- nita, so
is there any way I can have that changed now or do I have to wait to reach
500 million population when I think I can write customize my own profile
as I understand it. That is un-natural for Havaii (Hawaii) if I make it that way
on my own than so be it but not from the start. Please someone comment
on this by posting and or telegraming me. Thanks

The only way to change your national description is to make issue selections that correspond to the way you want your nation to be.

At 500 million, you can change your pretitle (such as "Kingdom") - not your description.

The Memberlist (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/memberlist.php?&order=ASC&sort=username&pp=15&ltr=) is going to be co-mingled with Jolt members now, so it doesn't realy work. By Total Posts (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/memberlist.php?&order=DESC&sort=posts&pp=15&ltr=) is mostly worthless too.

I haven't seen the others.

Only the mods know. The accepted theory is that she is Max Barry's codemonkey
The other theory is [violet] is the big man himself, Max Barry.
