I'm new and I'm not sure if this topic should be here but...

I think it would be a good idea to be able to have a custom flag more than 6KB. I personally made one, and it's less than 30KB, but I can't get it under 6KB. I think it would promote a lot more individuality if it would be easier to have your own, custom flag.

Basically, it would take up too much space, whilst giving too little benefit to too few people. For a 107x71 pixel image, which is just about large enough to look nice even on a 1280x960 resolution monitor, 6KB is more than enough. Most that I have seen are only 4-5KB. If everyone with a custom flag used an opportunity to triple or quadruple the file size of their flag, that would be bad, in that it would not really add anything new to the game, but put an additional strain on server storage constraints. Plus, note that flags are supposed to be "flag-like". If yours is that much over 6KB, chances are it is either of very large dimensions or not a relatively simple striped pattern. You can certainly stretch flag design conventions a lot further than that, but if the amount of detail present forces it to exceed the limits imposed, a redesign is in order.

That sounds fair, I just can't seem to get it under 6KB, and it is a simple pattern, I just removed a few stars and added a line.

If you are having troubles with this, I would direct you to 1 Infinite Loop ( http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=75398 ) as he is the resident (unofficial) expert on flags.

What format do you have it in. A common newbie mistake (or at leat I did it, and somebody else did it too at one point as we determined it was their problem), is not converting a bitmap, psd, etc to GIF or JPG.

Also, if it is a JPG, you might have had it on overly high resolution.

And it works to not do 71x107 px, as long as it is small enough file size.

So I could put in one that's, say, 68x113 (& less than 6KB)? Because I'd like to not be forced to 2:3 proportions.

almost all of my flags are 300x200, if you have a way post your flag so I can see it and I can probably fix it.
for examples of my work look at the East Pacific offsite forum, there is a gallery there of my flags and Im in the process of uploading flags I have made for others over the last seeral months of flag making.

I would point you to the nations I have made flags for, but I cannot recal the proper spelling of their names although I made the flag for,
Patriotute in the North Pacific,
Sniper Country in the Heartland,
and many others, including the one the newest version Of Beeker is using, Beeks

Hey, that's a GIF; the loader says nothing but JGPs! :o
Heh, that's cool.

Hmph. I just tried with a PNG; it loaded OK, but then squeezed the flag down to 107x71 :P :P :P

I saw a flag of a running deer once that actually moved. It was damn cool

Dunno how that would work as a real flag though :?

Ah, but therein lies the rub.

It only squeezes the flag when you are logged on.

Log out and do a nation search for "Tirocinium" and look at your flag.

Note if you are using Photoshop: Try using "Save for Web" instead of just "Save as" It has a display telling you what the size will be based on the current quality settings, and I've noticed it tends to make files way smaller when I use it. (like 30k->6k, as in the case of my first flag)

I used microsoft paint for my flag. I saved mine as a .png image (.png's are cool! they're small in size without losing resolution)

I know zipty do and dah about servers and webspace, so I ask from more ignorance then knowledge. But, I believe this would cause a substantial extension of the possible space Max is already grascisoly lending to us (don’t forget he can recall the space he loaned us at any time, as others seem to forget from time to time). 30KB per person is a lot to ask, to me. Perhaps like 14?

PNG's are the best!
My 300x200 pixel 16-color (aka 4-bit/pixel) .bmp was 30KB. A 15% lossage on .jpg brought it down to 24KB (the no lossage .jpg was 53KB). Shrinking the .jpg to 107x71, and then giving it a further 10% lossage got it barely to 6KB.
The original .bmp, turned to a .png, was 2KB! And no jpg "jaggies" either.
Man, if 300x200 is 2KB, I wonder how big I could get and fit under 6KB.
