Political Freedoms

29-09-2003, 10:27
I have been trying for along while to increase my nations political freedoms, but it seems every option I pick, it never goes above "Few."

Could someone give me some hints as to how to increase Political Freedoms? Such as, issues, and some example choices that will do this? Or maybe what to look for?

I'm just not doing something right!

Thanks in advance. And if this topic does not belong here, please move it. I was unsure, due to its nature, where best to post it.

You posted this in the right place.

I too have had trouble increasing political freedoms. Often, what looks like an issue which could affect your political freedoms, ends up affecting only your civil rights.

Reducing political freedoms is quite easy - making voting compulsory or banning elections, for example. But when you get the option of increasing freedom of speech by outlawing Internet snooping or allowing Nazi rallies to go ahead, I find only my civil rights increase by any significant degree, and my political freedoms remain more or less unchanged. The issue in which the people request "not so much dictatorship, please" could help though, if you choose to give the people greater representation.

Someone will no doubt post an exhaustive list soon.

The problem is, of course, that the 'not so much dictatorship' issue wont show up when you are, say, 'below average', or 'some'...

makes it hard to raise them above that level.

I did get that option once, and I picked for the people and said "Sure! Not so much dictatorship" I used to be a Corrupt Dictatorship, and now I'm a Libertarian Police State. Even so, while my civil rights has gone up, my Political Freedoms stay at "Few"

Increasing spending on police and the military decreases political freedoms. This results in having to make a choice between a politically free society or crime free one. Though... education does reduce crime as well so I suppose you could deal with it that way.

On another note, does anybody know exactly how allowing corporations to donate money affects political freedoms? Theoretical and philosophical discussions of this issue is nice and stuff but I'd rather know if anyone noticed how it affects the category, like if they noticed freedoms go up or down. Thanks.

The Defeatists is right, my nations have very strong police forces and well-funded military. That must be it. Gradually legislating against them could increase your political freedoms. The nations I have seen with a high freedom stat all had little in the way of military and police. However, they also usually had crime problems . . .

Got it. Big Police/Military = Police Abuse often = Political freedoms fall.

So now the question is...how do I decrease police and military? Heh. I did cut back military recently, that didn't seem to raise my thing any though. :\

I don't think one shot of cutting back on the military will help. It'll take several decisions to make a significant impact. Just like economy. Making one positive decision isn't gonna' give legible results immediately. Give it time, be patient, and wait for the proper decisions. It'll come.

From my experience allowing corporations to make donations to political parties increases political freedoms. Well, it does in the weird and whacky world that is NationStates, though I'd disagree with that in RL. The downside is that if you do it often enough I beleive it labels your government as corrupt (not the government type, just in the nation description).

I might be wrong on the last point though.
