Defining Oneself

08-09-2003, 23:34
Is there a place I can go for all official definitions of descriptions? For example, how does a "Scandinavian Liberal Pradise" differ from a "Left Leaning College State"?

Also, as a newbie, I was disappointed to discover that I could not write my nation's official description. Would it be possible to allocate space for a player-written propaganda as well as the game-assigned profile? Of course, they will contradict each other, but that's part of the fun.

There should be a newbies guide.
Rule number 1 should be read the faq.
Rule number 2 should be learn the rules.
Rule number 3 should be read topics in the forum.
This isue has been spammed so many times, that I was just getting glad that the spamming was over, and now a complete newbie starts te topic right out of the blue. It makes me wonder. Are you really a newbie, or just one of the spammers who just wanted to make sure all technical issues scrolled away, so they could spam [violet] about this?! :?

Yes, I am a newbie; and yes, I have read the FAQs. In so far as I can tell, the FAQs and the rules are one in the same, so rule #2 is redundant. If there is a separate and more extensive rules section, point me to it, because the "How to Play" link takes me to the FAQs. As for the "for newbies" section of the Forum it is almost all about how to conduct wars, godmoding and good etiquette. I'm sure they would be excellent, if any of them were on my question. The *closest* thing I could find to my question was a listing of economic rankings. So yes, there should be a newbie guide, but my question remains unanswered.

I think it's to much of a coincidence, a complete newbie starting a long spammed issue, but okay. Follow this thread, and if you'r not happy with it, feel free to "bump" it into oblivion. Link (http://www.nationstates.net/forum/viewtopic.php?t=67652)
I can give you 4 or 5 other links to the same issue, since the people who spammed it, did everything to bring it to the moderator's and [violet]'s attention!

Being diplomatic precludes being patronizing, but I fear that if I do not spell-out my intentions in short sentences we will be here forever.

Let me clarify: I do not want what you *think* I want. I am not talking national titles such as “Republic of -”. The thread you sent starts with Captain Stabbin asking about creating “custom national titles”. I am not talking about that.

I am talking about *UN Categories* and I do not want them customized but *defined*. My county, a “Scandinavian Liberal Paradise” seems fairly self-explanatory until you put it next to “Left-Leaning College State” and ask, “What is the difference?” Likewise, how do these governments differ from “Democratic Socialist” ones? The FAQs only inform me that there are 27 UN Categories without naming them or telling me how the similar ones differ from one another.

I think I know where the confusion ensued. In my original post, I had asked two separate questions which you may have read as one:

In my first question, I failed to say “UN Category” when I asked what was the difference between two UN Categories (“For example, how does a ‘Scandinavian Liberal Paradise’ differ from a ‘Left Leaning College State’?”) This question wasn't about customizing anything: I am looking for a glossary of UN Categories.

In my second, separate question, I suggested that players should be able to post more propagandistic profiles of their nations. By “profile”, I meant neither the national title nor the UN category, but the lengthy description that cites population, major industries, national animal, form of currency, etc. This way a nation suffering from a famine could improbably proclaim a harvest of bumper crops. In retrospect, this would probably be better handled as a press release in the Forum; but hopefully, you can now see what I was talking about.

Now that this confusion has been squared away, can I get an answer to my first question? Surely there must be a glossary of UN Categories available somewhere. I’m sure most players have no idea what a “New York Times Democracy” is, whether they are newbies or not.

Well, that's what the point of the categories, to reflect both the questions you answered when you started the nation, and the issues you answer daily.

In response to the what's the difference between a "Scandinavian Liberal Paradise"and a "Left Leaning College State", a Scandinavian Liberal Paradise is more authoritarian on economic issues than the College State. Because of this the Economic rating is lower in a SCL as compared to a LLCS in nation.

For a graphical layout of all of the UN ratings go here. (http://alces.sel.uaf.edu/gregg/ns/nsmap.html)

Note this is a spoiler page. It shows you every UN rating in the game in relation to each other.

Hope that helps.

That's what I'm talkin' about.

Many thanks to both Luna and NuMetal. The Commonwealth of CoOpera appreciates your invaluable cooperation. This was *exactly* what I wanted. These charts should be in the afore mentioned newbie guide or sticked to the top of the Forum.
