Yeah. I honestly thought it would be a real easy thing. However, I'm not expert with such things, so I could be way wrong.

I only do C, not SQL or XML, which I assume is what this game is based on, but as I understand it they would basically have to give you an extra door into the files which store your settings / configuration. It is not difficult as such, as they could use existing features which work in a similar way, but it is time-consuming, debugging especially. You do not want to get something wrong and screw up the configuration files of all the nations.

This is a relatively minor change to the code, however, neither is it a high priority. Also, I would like to note that [reploidproductions] is only a forum admin, and cannot change the game, only Max, [violet], and [dredd] are capable of that.

Yes, it implies that [violet] is not Max.
It is also old news. Maybe you didn't get the memo? :P

I believe the more the players nag the Admins for the custom names, the lower on their priority list it will become.

She did ask us players to remind her of it, but I assume that she meant after the user-submitted issues review system was up and running.

Yeah, [violet] never asked us to SPAM ( :twisted: ) him/her/them.

Custom nation names...sounds heavy! I wonder when they will enable us to do that?!
can someone please explain?
Customizing the name, like before what you call your nation. Like for me, the United States of. Right now, only moderators have custom ones. But they say you have to have 500 million people before they'll let you customize yours.

I think it should be for nations over 1 Billion, not 500 Million. IMHO

It might be helpful to keep the terminology straight.
The full name consists of "The [title] of [name]". My title is "Democratic States" and my name is "Cogitation". Hence, I am "The Democratic States of Cogitation".
Ordinary players must choose their title from a pop-up list in the Settings (http://www.nationstates.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi/page=settings) screen. Moderators may have custom titles that they type in.
The ReMODified Grand Duchy of Ineptia
The Ordinance Enabled Karmic Hegemony of Karmabaijan
The Imperial Dominion of Melkor Unchained
The Shogunate of Reploid Productions
The Omnipotent Federation of Stephistan
The Modling Realm of SalusaSecondus *
The Evilly Biased Power-Hungry Conservative National-Socialisticish DEAT-happy Moddom of Neutered Sputniks
* SalusaSecondus is not a full mod, so a full mod may have given him his custom title. I'm not a mod, so I don't know for sure.
Some players were able to get custom titles for a limited period of time due to a game bug; the bug was squashed, but these ordinary players were allowed to keep their custom titles.
There has been talk about letting ordinary players have custom titles if their nations reach 500 million population.
I hope this clears things up, Lebanon Catfish.

Actually, you were right about Salsaman having... help to change his name. As have I, Karma, Steph, and the other Forum Mods. Forum Mods don't have access to that sort of thing, it's edited by the Game Mods, just as they can change offensive animals, mottos, etc.

If I were ever made a moderator: "The Modified Democratic States of Cogitation".
As an ordinary player? That's a bit tougher. I'm inclined to go with "The Enlightened and Democratic States of Cogitation", but:
1) "Enlightened" might imply that I already know everything, when the point is that I don't know everything and I'm always looking to know more, and
2) it would break the title line.

The Democratic States of Ballotonia.

To add this would be nowhere near as complicated, as far as I can see it. All that would need to happen would be a little script that said something along the lines of
if ($pop >= 500) {
document.write(<td><input name=type value=current></td>)};
else
{current code};

Violet is Hack's girlfriend ;-).
As for [dredd], here's every post he/she's ever made:
(Wed Feb 05, 2003 1:17 pm)]What a difference a single SQL query can make :-)
(Fri Jan 24, 2003 8:21 pm)]As you know over the past couple of days the site has been unavailable for a substantial amount of time. In both cases the machine either crashed or ground to a halt. Load spiked very highly in the second instance. But I've been unable to confirm if this is the reason for the crashes. Anyway, some action has been taken to try to stop this, including limiting the maximum number of logins to 2000 (for now).
The first crash unfortunately corrupted the Forum database. We were forced to restore the user database from a backup. This has caused a number of problems: post counts were reset (as some have noticed), some people are unable to login (trying to address these problems currently) and some people can't access specific forums.
Additionally we've been making changes to the underlying UN code to try to improve the responsiveness of the site. It has been down (can't connect to unsock errors) and may be shut down again.
I would like thank you all for your patience as we work through these problems. And hope you can continue to enjoy the game despite sections of it being unavailable at times!
