With the Rugby World Cup XII about to start, there have been suggestions of an International club competition. Rumour has it that each nation will be able to send four teams to this new cup tournament each year.

Somewhereistonia, who is taking part in the talks and the world cup, has recently finished its Rugby Union season. The results have been more important this season than any other with players hoping to play at Somewhereistonia's first world cup and at this higher level club competition.

Post all your Rugby Union club results here.

(This post will be all OOC.)

Thanks for starting this up, Somewhere. I'll be scorinating my league later, as I've got quite a bit of house cleaning to do today and I've already wasted a lot of time on NS.

In the meantime, we should discuss scorination and hostination. I think this whole thing was originally Quod's idea, so he should get a lot of say in this.

My personal thinking is that we can have a different playoff/tournament host for each season, and whoever that is, will scorinate the regular season of the super league for that campaign as well. I also envisioned a promotion/relegation system after the first year of the super league gets going, wherein the worst super league teams get replaced by their respective domestic league's best teams that year, so that the super league stays relatively static throughout without getting stagnant. We could also do a two-division super league. What do y'all think?

All OOC: Creating a whole league creates problems with scorinators. E.g. someone has to be there scoring each round of matches each season. Also, people who 'host' will need to have scorinators ready, so I say those that could host and want to get put into some sort of rotation system. This means that one nation can't just get to be 'host' all the time. In effect it would only be the final they actually host, with teams playing home and away games.

I want this (and I think Quod agrees) to be open and accessible to new teams to come in, whilst a promotion/relegation system doesn't really allow for that, it will probably just lead to a sort of underclass of teams that won't move up the rankings.

League rosters will have plenty of time to be put up. The cup(s) will most likely start after the Rugby World Cup, so don't worry about that.

I like that. I mean, I'd like to see it be a league, like the Super 14 and such IRL. In that case, I hereby throw my hat into the ring as one of the rotating scorinators. Can we assume that you do too, since you clearly have a scorinator available?

Fair enough.

In response to calls mainly from club chairmen thinking of ways to make lots of money, the WZRU has decided to set up a national Rugby Union league.

Twelve teams have been invited to contest the inaugural competition. They are:

Bradley and Elwell
Buckby
Clwb Rygbi Caernewydd
Currie Celtic
Flockton Flavell
Moorcroft
Mort Park
Oakley
Redwood
St. Martin Bees
Snaith Marlins

During the talks the Somewhereistonia Sporting Association decides to present its idea for the potential tournament.

Thus far the basic torunament idea will be as follows:

Each nation sends 4 teams. They play each other twice in group stage (4 teams in group?).

Then top teams from group stage go through to two legged knockout stage. The final will be hosted by a different nation each year [they will also scorinate all that season's games].

Club rankings from three seasons will be used in scorination after first competiton. New nations can apply for places in the cup, and will most likely be accepted. If numbers do not work, these nations clubs (usually only lowest qualifier) will play off for a place in tournament.

Those that do not qualify through play-offs, as well as nations from older leagues could enter into a 'Heroes Cup' [TM]. This allows teams to improve their ranking for the next season. This will most likely begin in the second season.

We have not settled a name for the main competition, but I suggest we avoid having 'league' in the title to avoid confusion. A potential name is World/Global Challenge Cup.

We put forward these ideas for improvement and potential ratification from other associations.
Sorthern Northland

Sorthern Rugby, 2035 season

2035 will be a year remembered in Sorthern club rugby went global. Experts are already predicting that in years to come Sorthern domestic rugby results being made known to the world will be the most remembered sporting event after the (football) World Cup 45 semi-final, Lee Waywide's testimonial, Corcaigh's second Sorthern Football League title in a row, Daithí Meallán winning a Tour de Qazox stage, Corcaigh somehow making the semi-final of the TakilQuip Champions Cup, a goose killing a young footballer and the pitch invasion of a non-League football ground by a man dressed as a giant banana.

So before we all explode with excitement, let's take a look at what happened starting with the Sorthern Rugby League.

Sorthern Rugby League

Whilst the rest of the world, in the words of the chairman of a SFL chairman, “fannies” around with Rugby Union, Sorthern Northland prefers to amuse itself largely with the code involving 13 men, hence League gets higher attention. The Sorthern Rugby League contains a number of historical team, such as Oosehill who claim to have the oldest Rugby League ground in Atlantian Oceania and Rugbaí Curadh Corcaigh who claim to be the oldest Irish speaking Rugby League club in the world. Facts such as these are readily accepted by followers of Sorthern Rugby League, largely because they can't be bothered to check how true such statements are, and in reality probably don't actually give a toss if they aren't true.

Rubgy League One

Anyway, the 2035 season wasn't exactly one full of excitement, with top scorers in Rugby League One, Beningrad averaging a mere 13.1111111111 points for per game. And for that they found themselves joining Wharfdale in getting relegated. Well done them! And that the other end of the table Oosehill found themselves champions after Floriana who had until then been leading the table, managed to lose at Gratnesborugh RLFC on the last day of the season. How kind.

Edit: And it seems that whichever idiot was charge of media at the Sorthern Rugby League forget to include tables that showed the standings for the entire season. A mistake that was pointed out by rugby enthusiasts in Somewhereistonia who are seemingly more alert to Sorthern rugby than the people running Sorthern rugby. A proud season then for Sorthern rugby. So in brief Oosehill didn't become champions becuase of Floriana losing on the final day of the season, but they did still become champions. At the other end Beningrad and Wharfdale still go down.

Rubgy League Two

And in the second tier it was almost as exciting with Lispole equalling Beningrad's points average of 13.1111111111 points scored per game! Fortuna Niew Amsterdam were fortunate (c wht i did thar!?) winners of the league as the chasing pack were unable to capitalise on their heavy final day defeat to Club de Rugby Septentrionien de Finistère (who themselves keep up a tradition of Finistère sports teams having stupidly long names). Sobrinic, who were at the top of that chasing pack even went as far as to return the favour to Niew Amsterdam by losing to Derlabat thus knocking them down to third and out of the promotion places. What a shame.

Edit: The missing two days did whoever make a difference in League Two as Club de *insert sport here* Septentrionien de Finistère keep up their tradition of dominating Sorthern sports with Club de Rugby Septentrionien de Finistère winning promotion in the last two matches.

Sorthern Union Premier

And now to the Rugby Union league, or the Sorthern Union Premier as it's called itself in an attempt to sound more like some sort of first uniting of something than a sports league. Before we go any further it'd probably be best to explain how the Sorthern Union Premier works for those wondering why the hell the top domestic Rugby Union competition contains none of the teams that the players in the World Cup squad play for. Simply, those clubs don't compete in a national competition. They compete in provincial competitions. The twelve teams in the Sorthern Union Premier each represent one of the twelve provinces of Sorthern Northland, and each province selects its players from the players who play for clubs within their own province. (OOC: A bit like how each county selects it's team in Gaelic Football and Hurling as a RL example.)

So with that explained, the most notable thing about the Union Premier, is that sports can be played successfully in the cold. In football, Snowspire, capital of the Northern Wastes province have long struggled to make use of what should be a major home advantage. Their rugby counterparts though were able to make that advantage count, and whilst the close points tally might suggest otherwise, the other teams spent much of the seasons struggling to keep up with the eventual winners.

OOC post: Currently we have six sign-ups for the cup tournament (giving 24 teams). Another two would be ideal for the first tournament. If not then we can easily make alternative arrangements (e.g. 5 teams each with a lottery for 6th placed teams).

At the end of the tournament I will create some national club rankings to work out qualification places in the next season. As club teams are separate from national teams, I will keep the two rankings completely separate.

The Heroes Cup (if we use that name) should start from season two, I'm not sure whether we should have the same or a different host for this, but we can work that out later.

Current host bids are: Somewhereistonia, Norwellia, Quintessence of Dust.

L'Union de Rugby de Septentrionie (formerly known as l'Association Septentrionienne de Football Bostopien) met earlier this year, with an evident goal of creating a new league for it. Eight existing sports clubs were members of the union:

Association Sportive Jacques-Leroux de Cap-Nord (ASJL Cap-Nord)
Club de Sports Ourseville 1093 (CS Ourseville 1093)
Club Sportif Sept-Onze d'Ourseville (CS Sept-Onze Ourseville)
Union d'Ourseville
Union Sportive de Septentrionalis (US Septentrionalis)
Septentrionalis Hockey & Sports Club (Septentrionalis HC)
Club Sportif du Stade (CS du Stade)
Club de Soccer de Lac-Amédée (CS Lac-Amédée)

After a meeting, it was decided to follow the old Bostopian Football (also known as Rugball) season running during the septentrionian winter, so that it doesn't disrupt the summer season used by the Superligue. Of course, it means less exposure, as the ice hockey Nordikliga is playing during that time, but it was the only way to guarantee a decent season. Two members, who have outside pitches, namely ASJL Cap-Nord and CS Lac-Amédée, rejected the proposition, while the other six teams voted for it. The two clubs, fearing an unfair battle against the other six, decided to not enter the new league while retaining their URS membership.

So the new league, named Super Six, started in late October, after the soccer season was over. Teams played a total of 30 games (6 times against each other) for the title. One subtility in the Septentrionian game: there are no playoffs. So the winner of the regular season are the champions of the league. Teams will play two matches a week, so that the season only lasts 15 weeks. Many people have complained about it, but it was felt necessary, as the soccer season is the main concern for those clubs.

Also, club names are slightly different from the ones listed previously:

RFC Ourseville 1093
CS-R Sept-Onze Ourseville
Union d'Ourseville RFC
US Septentrionalis
Dôme Rugby
Rugby Club du Stade

Anyway, time for the 2023-2024 Super Six results:

Pos Team P W D L GF GA GD Pts

6 RFC Ourseville 1093 30 9 6 15 309 364 -55 48

So, top 4 would qualify for the [whateveritwillbenamed] Cup.

The Candelarias Rugby Union Championship [CRUC]: Season 17

Rugby union, as everybody knows, was brought to the Candelarias by Northlandish immigrants, at roughly the same time that rugby union was being brought to Sorthern Northland by Candelariasian settlers. From humble beginnings, a vague interest in all things egg-shaped developed into something short of a national obsession. Really quite short of, actually, come to think of it. Um.

Support for those brave and foolhardy practitioners of the game of queens remained consistently high however but, as with its bedfellows field hockey, cricket and bat & trap, the sport remained stubbornly amateurish – regarding league play as innately uncouth and professionalism as utterly anathema.

Thirty-four years ago, or summat like that, depending on how one looks at it, the CRUC (commonly pronounced krewk, with an incongruous Scouse twang) was finally formed, largely against the wishes of the islands’ rugby-playing community. Indeed just one team, Vo Rugby Club, applied to take part, with most major sides from the country’s rugby heartland – southern Candelaria – refusing to even acknowledge the existence of the new professional competition. The only other side the new CRUC proved able to recruit were the Arrigo Eagles – a former NFBL soccer club, who had fallen into amateurism themselves once the CMSC era had kicked into gear, and Arrigo Portuguese had emerged as all-powerful.

Unbowed, the league set about creating half a dozen new franchises, initially in areas without any great rugby-playing heritage – the Bove Bats, the Zapata Turtles, the Khatib-Gassett Bloodhounds; all proved capable of siphoning off those players willing to put aside their lengthily-held principals in favour of shiny bags of reformed pounds. No-one but the Eagles could touch Vo that first season, and the league’s most traditional team retained their title with ease the following term, but the competition was steadily attracting increasing interest among a population previously apathetic to the sport.

For the seventh season, the CRUC introduced a play-off system that remains in place to this day. The final, one of the first matches of any sport to be played at the Millerman Sheppard Stadium, saw the Capital City Panthers overcome the Bass King Sharks twenty-five points to thirteen. Candelaria And Marquez was sold, the venerable clubs shrugged their shoulders, and the country’s best players finally flooded into the league.

The CRUC remained a closed shop, new teams only breaking into the twelve-club division in the event of bankruptcy or similar – the Onwere Glory Pheasants being the most recent to go, replaced by another franchise team, the Warne Hogs. The Candelarias Rugby Union Union has, however, been busy to increase the number of semi-pro franchises and spread the game around, with two national divisions beneath the CRUC housing the likes of the Brayton Badgers, Brian Treeshrews and Downtown Giant Toads. Other, more traditional, teams have recently been permitted entry – finally giving such old clubs as Romans United, the Gentlemen, Lesperance Northlandish and the Lavange Evening Telegraph a chance to shine. From next season, a single relegation/promotion place will be introduced between the CRUC and ND1 for the first time in the competition’s history. T’would’ve been covered in this here report, had not the rapid emergence of the Unnamed International Challenge Cup forced us into publishing the results of the season immediately prior to the twelfth Rugby World Cup instead.

Any road up, in the years since the introduction of the play-offs, there has been one dominant force – the Arrigo Eagles. The Marquezians have won six of the past nine league titles, converting all but one of them into championships, and have never placed outside the top four since Season 8. Their star names of years past – Ramiro Jérez, Howard Hoare, Darian O’Reilly, Alfredo Silva, Mark Webb, Ferdinand Bennett, Juan Pablo O’Donvan, Jason Andrews, Ilija Lilic, Jacob Thompson and countless more – have won World Cups for their country (well, one, but…) and achieved a domestic monopoly broken only by the Panthers and El din Bulls.

So it was in CRUC 16, with the Panthers – now bearing the name of Liverpool, after a move from Hoxton to one of the capital’s outer boroughs – taking the league title by two points from the Eagles, with everyone else trailing far in their wake. As for last year, few were prepared to predict any other outcome…

12 Bass King Sharks 22 3 1 18 292 608 -316 14

And so it proved, with the Stags – beaten championship finalists in CRUC 16 – the only truly surprising side in slipping well out of contention for a play-off spot, alongside the inexorable rise of the Hogs. And as far as the play-offs went…

Championship Semi-Finals
Liverpool Panthers 20-18 Bove Bats
@ Camelot Arena, Albrecht

Arrigo Eagles 55-30 El din Bulls
@ Calle del Águila, Arrigo

Thus, in the highest-scoring game of the entire season by quite some margin, the Eagles ousted their arch rivals to book a place in yet another final. The Panthers held the advantage, having taken home and away victories against the Eagles already this term, but how would the clash in Allemali determine who got the shiny pot?

CRUC 17 Championship Final
Liverpool Panthers 23-13 Arrigo Eagles
@ Hallowfield Park, Allemali

And so, in a rather more entertaining affair that the previous term’s 13-7 victory over the Stags; the Panthers retained their championship title – taking home the trophy for the fifth time and edging ever closer to the Eagles’ six gongs.

With the advent of inter-connected lower divisions, the imminent arrival of the Non-Specific Alcoholic Beverage Cup, and moves towards breaking with the CMSC traditional by playing a full league season every twelve months, will the two clubs’ domination of the CRUC be sorely tested? Or can Shane Mitchell and Ramiro Jérez successfully re-imagine their sides and set up another generation of all-powerful Eagles and Panthers? And does anyone really care, when all’s said and done?

I know I don’t.

[OOC: Finally got the scorinator working!]

The first season of the West Zirconian Rugby Union Championship has taken place, with four places in a yet-to-be-named global cup at stake.

Mort Park were the early pace-setters, undefeated for six games until a tight 20-19 defeat to Currie Celtic brought them back level with the chasing pack. It proved to be a minor setback, as by the half-way point they had opened up a six-point lead over Moorcroft, Caernewydd and St. Martin Bees in joint second.

Things once again evened up in the second half of the campaign, with embarrassing defeats to Snaith Marlins and Stanley Park bringing Mort Park into second behind Moorcroft.

Going into the final round of matches, Mort Park led Moorcroft by a mere point. Pretty much everything else, inluding global qualification and the wooden spoon, was already decided. Moreover, the final match saw Mort Park host Moorcroft. You couldn't make this up, could you?

A Moorcroft win would see them crowned champions. Any other result would give the title to Mort Park. And the final result was:

Mort Park 16-32 Moorcroft

So Moorcroft won the title by a mere point. Bradley and Elwell, after a disappointing start, rallied to take third, sneaking past Caernewydd in the process.

Ad’ihan Rugby Union Board forms new league

CITY OF AD’IHAN— The newly-formed Ad’ihan Rugby Union Board, or ARUB, today announced it will set up a two-tier eighteen-team league system for rugby union in the islands.

The league will officially be known as the GeoMetNet Rugby Union Premiership, and will be split into the top flight of the GeoMetNet Power 6 and the second division of the GeoMetNet Super 12.

GeoMetNet, the title sponsors of the league, are a private Ad’ihani weather conglomerate which puts out its own forecasts in co-ordination with the National Weather Agency and owns the weather cable television network of the same name.

The Power 6 will play each other six times (30 games), with the team at the top of the standings after the 30 games winning the Premiership and Power 6 titles. The Super 12 will play each other three times (33 games), with the team at the top of the standings after the 33 games winning the Super 12 title and automatic promotion to the next season's Power 6.

The bottom two Power 6 teams and the teams that place second through fifth in the Super 12 then play a double round robin Special 6 tournament, with the winner staying in the top flight (or winning promotion). This guarantees that at least one Power 6 team will be relegated every season.

During the season, the top eight teams after the first eight games will take part in a single-knockout cup tournament, the Premiership Cup, with the winners crowned a week after the end of the Super 12 and a week before the start of the Special 6.

In the Power 6 and Super 12, four points will be awarded for a win and two for a draw, with no bonus points. However, one bonus point will be awarded to each team in the Special 6 for each match lost by less than seven points. No bonus points will be awarded for tries.

Quintessential Premier League
Season in Review
With comments from Brian Gobbleson and William Bentley.

This season's QPL proved especially high-scoring, and produced some good, exciting rugby throughout. The bonus point system needs reforming, and late in the season the top teams went negative on occasion, but overall things went as smoothly as ever.

Tourseilles were the surprise victors. The Highmark-French side have always been a force in the QPL but rarely challenged for the top spots; this year, however, they were incredibly strong, and after beating Toonmar in the crunch game at the halfway point never looked back. Key to their success was their experienced pack, led by Rene Friedman, and the discovery of young backs Ignace Durand, Chapin Piedalue and Roland Carouette.

Toonmar snapped at their heels for much of the way but fell behind at the end, despite putting 203 points to nil on the board in just two matches. Ron Diller scored 19 tries, Lian Liang was an energetic presence at stand-off, and their defence was generally superb; but they had one of the weakest front rows in the league and struggled to get quick ball often enough.

Defending champions New Cleethorpes Deathshriek finished 3rd despite fielding the best back row throughout. Jim Adams was a real find, a scrappy but inventive flanker, and Matt Grey was as enduring as ever. Mike McCall struggled a little with his kicking, but scored six pacey tries. Barry Pullman led from the front with the same determination as he shows for the national team.

Highmark City Irish are no longer as dominant as they once were, and relied excessively on the admittedly brilliant half-back pairing of Tommy Donegan and Sean Reilly. Reilly always looks more capable as a three-quarter, but his kicking from hand was good enough to keep the number 10 jersey. Patrick Flaherty had a bad season, and Danny Mensen exploded out of the blocks only to run a little flat by the last few games. They still beat Albersau in the final game to seal 4th place and international qualification, though.

For Albersau, figures such as back row Lester Watson and scrum half Martin Sankt had good seasons that, in the long view of history, will be totally obscured by the meteoric rise of a player once considered only second XV material at the national level. Bill Gerhard may have moved infield, but his kicking remains as reliable as ever, his handling sharp and running superb; and throughout, he brought a thoroughly un-Quodite sense of class and excitement to proceedings. Albersau were very unlucky not to qualify for international play, and will be looking to go one better - at least - next season.

Combined Veterans suffered from a porous defence that Ryan Roda's kicking could only sometimes cover for. Stefan Karlsen marshalled the pack with aplomb, Jonatan Holmberg was nippy outwide, and bullish prop forward Alex Parker scored an astonishing nine tries. Still, too many of their players are, well, veterans, and the age is beginning to show.

Ballat managed to look worse on paper than they did on the field. They were hindered by Willem Larsen's injury problems, and won fewer than half their matches despite having the best forward in the country - Dean Olafson - at number eight. Michael Daecher was the find of the year at full-back, though he kicked a little too often and got held up enough times to think that upper body strength could be an issue.

The unluckiest team was Nowy Orpington Cellists. They escaped relegation but deserved so much more: seven bonus points and a draw show just how things might have gone with a different blow of the wind. Bernard Franks has evolved from a slugging crash centre into a genuine back of both flair and substance, and Felicjan Wysocki was one of the best kickers out of hand in the QPL this season, though several of those bonus points could have been improved on if he'd landed his conversions more regularly.

Priassa were wiped out by the lack of a decent stand-off. Their defence was disorganized and their attacking options limited despite having the best wing duet in George Hall and Erwin Dahl, who will probably ship out. Charlie Stewart had some great games at openside but spent a full 100 minutes of the season in the sin bin.

The less said about Central's season the better. The word "holocaust" comes to mind.

Matches

Round 1

An unremarkable first matchday saw some good rugby, but few surprises. The Veterans were blown away by Bill Gerhard, who notced up 34 points as he scored a try and kicked 12 from 12 for Albersau. Tourseilles looked strong against Ballat, who might have held them closer if Larsen had landed his kicks. Tommy Donegan scored the first hat-trick of the season for Irish, and kicked another six points to help them on their way against the lacklustre Cellists. Deathshriek dominated Central at home, though they suffered some abysmal kicking from Mike McCall, who only made four of 13 conversion attempts, though he did score a brace tries along with national team captain Barry Pullman and new lock Ryan Hellström. Toonmar and Priassa were evenly matched to the end, when Lian Liang, who missed his place kicks, squirted a late drop goal. Ew, “squirted”.

Albersau 64 – 17 Combined Veterans
Ballat 18 – 32 Tourseilles
Highmark City Irish 43 – 24 Nowy Orpington Cellists
New Cleethorpes Deathshriek 73 – 7 Central
Toonmar 8 – 5 Priassa

Round 2

Larsen found his kicking boots for Ballat, who failed to score a try but still wound up comfortable winners at the GCU Stadium as he put eight penalties and a drop-goal on the board against an unconverted try from Bob Bentley. Continuing the alliterative theme, Ryan Roda landed seven penalties to give the Veterans a surprise win over a very subpar Irish side, but the bigger shock came as the Toonmar defence yielded a late try to the increasingly versatile Bernard Franks, who came on to play on the wing and put the Cellists into the lead with three minutes to play. More predictable was Deathshriek's second huge victory on the trot, chiefly thanks to 31 points from McCall. And a disciplined Tourseilles team prevailed over Albersau as both kickers struggled in the howling wind.

Central 5 – 27 Ballat
Combined Veterans 26 – 13 Highmark City Irish
Nowy Orpington Cellists 30 – 27 Toonmar
Priassa 5 – 41 New Cleethorpes Deathshriek
Tourseilles 20 – 8 Albersau

Round 3

Albersau returned to winning ways as they smashed Central, who have thus far scored just 15 points in their 3 matches, while conceding 141. Bill Gerhard scored 31 points to confirm his reputation as the nation's best kicker. Phil Freud suffered a season-ending, potentially career-ending, injury at the base of a ruck, though his Ballat team still romped home against Priassa by 35 points. Tourseilles proved just as convincing against the Veterans, with two tries apiece for Chapin Piedalue and Clovis Chouinard. McCall and Felicjan Wysocki duelled it out in the East-West derby, with the Deathshriek stand-off the winner, while the big Highmark match-up ended with Toonmar the upset victors, despite Danny Mensen's 4th try of the season.

Albersau 41 – 3 Central
Ballat 54 – 19 Priassa
Combined Veterans 6 – 38 Tourseilles
New Cleethorpes Deathshriek 24 – 15 Nowy Orpington Cellists
Toonmar 24 – 16 Highmark City Irish

Round 4

The story of Matchday 4 was undoubtedly Ryan Roda's 44 points for the Veterans against Central – 1 conversion, 13 penalties and a drop-goal. It rathered overshadowed the first competent performance Central have managed, scoring 3 tries and 36 points, though they still lost. At the opposite end of the scoring spectrum was an even thriller between the Irish and French teams, the Irish wrapping up a surprise win through a late Patrick Flaherty try. Soren Pinneau scored two for Tourseilles but Bonenfant's kicking remained maddeningly inconsistent. The Cellists managed a comfortable home win against Ballat, thanks to Franks and Wysocki. Priassa remain in dire straits, with two sharp wingers and no one to pass it out to them, and they went down like a stone against Albersau despite a rare off-day with the boot from Gerhard; he still lit up the field, scoring two tries along with the impressive Martin Sankt. And Toonmar continued their excellent form with a confident victory over Deathshriek. The New Cleethorpes retained their number position by virtue of points difference.

Central 36 – 49 Combined Veterans
Highmark City Irish 17 – 10 Tourseilles
Nowy Orpington Cellists 22 – 10 Ballat
Priassa 5 – 34 Albersau
Toonmar 21 – 14 New Cleethorpes Deathshriek

Round 5

A see-sawing game at Ballat saw the home side triumph after Larsen and Gerhard deadlocked on penalties, before blood-sub Paul Wechsler skimmed over a drop-goal. For the fourth game in five rounds, Priassa could manage only 5 points, this time losing to the Irish, with Mensen extending his lead atop the try scoring table. Deathshriek recovered from their loss to beat the Veterans 23-10 at home, with back row Jim Adams unusually dropping a goal. Central suffered another huge loss, this time at The Arena of Dreams, where the Cellists notched up five tries, three conversions, eight penalties and one drop-goal. The big match of the day pitted Toonmar and Tourseilles against one another; Tourseilles triumphed resoundingly as Toonmar failed to score for the first time in a decade. Friedman smashed over for an early try, and Bonenfant kept slotting penalties.

Ballat 15 – 12 Albersau
Highmark City Irish 26 – 5 Priassa
New Cleethorpes Deathshriek 23 – 10 Combined Veterans
Nowy Orpington Cellists 58 – 5 Central
Toonmar 0 – 20 Tourseilles

Round 6

The match between Albersau and Nowy Orpington ended in a tantalising draw as Wysocki slid in for a late try but fluffed the conversion attempt. The Toonmar defence proved too strong for Ballat, and Ron Diller picked up a brace of tries, though Liang's kicking again left something to be desired. The Veterans triumphed over Priassa in a game marked by too much aimless midfield kicking. Deathshriek faced a stern test in the Irish, and held out for a win thanks to Matt Grey's 3rd try of the season and McCall's kicking, as he became the first player to pass 100 points for the season, but slipped to second place overall as Tourseilles beat Central at a canter. Fitz Bonenfant's kicking was terrible, but he did manage a try, while his brother Chappell barged over for a hat-trick. Central already look doomed to relegation (of course, I've already simmed the results, so my prescience should be taken with a grain of salt) and failed to score a single point.

Albersau 10 – 10 Nowy Orpington Cellists
Ballat 8 – 29 Toonmar
Combined Veterans 20 – 14 Priassa
New Cleethorpes Deathshriek 22 – 10 Highmark City Irish
Tourseilles 67 – 0 Central

Round 7

The Irish thrashed Central, despite Reilly missing every single conversion; he has now been overtaken by Mensen's points tally as the second row scored another two tries. Ingram was also wayward for Central. Ballat managed just three points away against Deathshriek as McCall knocked over seven penalties. Franks scored his 5th and 6th tries of the season as the Cellists thoroughly stuffed a ragged-looking Veterans side. Tourseilles again proved resilient in defence as they beat Priassa in a low-scoring game. And Albersau dearly missed the injured Gerhard, scraping just five against the strong Toonmar side, with young centre Mathias Hedlund scoring his first hat-trick.

Highmark City Irish 56 – 15 Central
New Cleethorpes Deathshriek 31 – 3 Ballat
Nowy Orpington Cellists 52 – 17 Combined Veterans
Priassa 6 – 17 Tourseilles
Toonmar 34 – 5 Albersau

Round 8

This was the most evenly matched round thus far, but there was plenty of excitement amongst the low scores. Ignace Durand kicked three long penalties to give Tourseilles a narrow win over the Cellists, although they were overtaken again by Deathstriek at the top of the table. The impressive Alex Parker scored his 3rd try of the season against Toonmar, but they shot back with four tries, including Diller's 6th so far. In the battle at the bottom of the table, Priassa picked up valuable headway over Central, thanks to a hat-trick from flanker Charlie Stewart. Albersau can only wait for Gerhard to return; without him, they're nothing, at all. Or so it seemed as they slipped 17-0 to Deathshriek at home. And there was shock as Larsen kicked Ballat to a 12-point victory over the Irish.

Albersau 0 – 17 New Cleethorpes Deathshriek
Ballat 17 – 7 Highmark City Irish
Central 12 – 41 Priassa
Combined Veterans 8 – 27 Toonmar
Tourseilles 12 – 6 Nowy Orpington Cellists

Round 9

Three fantastically close games and a confident 22-0 victory for Tourseilles over the defending champions were all upstaged by Toonmar's sensational 102-point annihilation of the feeble Central, who had no response. Liang missed five conversions: no matter, he still had eleven more to complete! He also scored two tries, and Hedlund got his second hat-trick, but the star was Diller, who became the first player to score four tries in a match. Tourseilles played beautiful rugby and richly deserved their important win to open up a four point lead in the table going into the halfway break. The Eastern derby saw an upset as Prissa edged out the Cellists by one point as Wysocki missed a last-minute drop-goal attempt. Larsen's five penalties weren't good enough for Ballat, who went down to a Jonatan Holmberg try for the Veterans. And Gerhard's return brought delights for Albersau: he scored a try, kicked four from four and added a drop-goal to give the underdogs victory over Highmark City Irish, for whom, by contrast, Reilly's kicking again fell short of the mark, though he ran in a try.

Albersau 23 – 17 Highmark City Irish
Central 0 – 102 Toonmar
Combined Veterans 17 – 15 Ballat
Priassa 20 – 19 Nowy Orpington Cellists
Tourseilles 22 – 0 New Cleethorpes Deathshriek

Round 10

The beginning of the second half of the season brought no change for Central, as they failed to score yet again, with visitors Deathshriek putting 50 points on the board. Lian Liang scored 36 points for Toonmar as they comfortably beat Priassa. Elsewhere, things were tighter: Tourseilles could only manage one try against Ballat, relying on Fitz Bonenfant's mercurial kicking to seal the win, Reilly snuck a win for the Irish with a sharp try, and the Veterans held Albersau to a draw at home thanks to a late try from Parker, although Roda missed the conversion.

Central 0 – 50 New Cleethorpes Deathshriek
Combined Veterans 19 – 19 Albersau
Nowy Orpington Cellists 10 – 15 Highmark City Irish
Priassa 10 – 51 Toonmar
Tourseilles 23 – 6 Ballat

Round 11

Albersau recorded their third draw of the season, against the best opposition. Ignace Durand scored two long penalties for Tourseilles, but Gerhard came back with a late drop goal from the halfway line. Ballat eased to victory over Central despite an inconsistent display from Larsen. Things were surprisingly tight for the Irish, with Sean Reilly kicking two drop-goals in the final minutes of the game to give them a narrow victory over the Veterans. He also landed two penalties and two tries on one of his “good” - i.e. sober – days. George Hall landed 17 points for Priassa, but they were still washed away by Deathshriek. And Toonmar's excellent form continued, with Diller scoring his 11th try of the season and Hedlund his 9th.

Albersau 6 – 6 Tourseilles
Ballat 18 – 0 Central
Highmark City Irish 25 – 20 Combined Veterans
New Cleethorpes Deathshriek 43 – 17 Priassa
Toonmar 40 – 13 Nowy Orpington Cellists

Round 12

Round 12 brought some of the best rugby of the season. Tourseilles's defence was superb against the Veterans, while Clovis Chouinard drove over for his 5th try. A low-scoring game ended in Toonmar's favour as Liang hit a penalty and a drop-goal to come back from 8-7 down against the Irish after Reilly's 7th try of the season. Franks went one better for the Cellists, but it was still not enough against the superior Deathshriek, despite McCall's wayward kicking performance. Priassa conceded two penalty tries for cynical play against Ballat, who were otherwise unremarkable. And the GCU Stadium saw yet another rout as Gerhard returned to the top of the points table, his tally for the day including a try, four conversions and four penalties.

Central 5 – 45 Albersau
Highmark City Irish 8 – 13 Toonmar
Nowy Orpington Cellists 17 – 22 New Cleethorpes Deathshriek
Priassa 13 – 25 Ballat
Tourseilles 26 – 7 Combined Veterans

Round 13

Tourseilles's title hopes suffered a set back in the Highmark derby. Tommy Donegan put in a fantastic performance for the Irish, scoring 14 points and making a crucial tackle to stop Friedman's surging run in the last seconds after the back row had already scored twice. Damn that was an ugly sentence. And that. Central lost; in other news, water is wet and the sky would appear to be blue. This time, Parker and Holmberg were the agents of their destruction with two tries each. Gerhard collected another huge tally at Priassa, this time scoring 21 including his 7th try. At the other end of the scale, Larsen missed all five of his conversions, but Ballat still triumphed over the Cellists despite another superb showing from Franks. And Liang scored all 11 of Toonmar's points as they ground out a narrow win over Deathshriek, who were missing three of their first choice pack members, to leapfrog up the leaderboard into first place.

Albersau 36 – 5 Priassa
Ballat 25 – 19 Nowy Orpington Cellists
Combined Veterans 35 – 5 Central
New Cleethorpes Deathshriek 5 – 11 Toonmar
Tourseilles 16 – 23 Highmark City Irish

Round 14

With an eye on the end of the season, Deathshriek stumbled to a draw away against the Veterans in the battle of the back rows. Title rivals Tourseilles and Toonmar locked horns at the Stade de Saint Pamplemousse, but Friedman was again on form to give the French the edge as Toonmar failed to cross the line. Another close game saw the Irish made to sweat for their tryless win over Priassa, who would have won if Hall hadn't botched his conversions. Franks scored his first ever drop-goal to demonstrate his increasing maturity as a back, and added a second for good luck. He has now scored 51 points, compared to 40 for Jay Ingram, Central's kicker. And Gerhard broke another milestone against the luckless Ballat, becoming the first play to pass 200 points for the season as he notched up a try, three conversions, three penalties and two-drop goals.

Albersau 36 – 6 Ballat
Central 7 – 36 Nowy Orpington Cellists
Combined Veterans 6 – 6 New Cleethorpes Deathshriek
Priassa 15 – 18 Highmark City Irish
Tourseilles 14 – 12 Toonmar

Round 15

Deathshriek returned to form to breeze past the Irish, who put on their worst performance of the season to be wiped out by 29 points. The increasingly jaw-dropping Gerhard claimed all 36 points for Albersau, this time scoring five tries to sweep past Diller on the leaderboard, though Franks was also impressive for the Cellists. Priassa faced yet another colossal defeat as Parker, who is proving unusually high-scoring for a prop, grabbed another two tries, and Roda kicked 27 points. Toonmar's resilient defence kept Ballat to a single try while Diller put in his 12th of the season, though for once Liang's kicking was out of form. The top-bottom clash of Tourseilles and Central proved a predictable blowout; Durand and Bonenfant split the kicking duties as Friedman led a ten-try rout with a hat-trick.

Central 10 – 80 Tourseilles
Highmark City Irish 8 – 37 New Cleethorpes Deathshriek
Nowy Orpington Cellists 24 – 36 Albersau
Priassa 5 – 52 Combined Veterans
Toonmar 23 – 5 Ballat

Round 16

With Tourseilles all but confirmed as victors, their seven converted tries against Priassa doing little to hurt their cause, most attention was on the mid-table clashes in Round 16. The Cellists lost a crunch game to the Veterans as Ryan Roda dropped a goal with two minutes to play, despite the unstoppable Franks picking up his 11th try. The Irish were looking comfortable against Central until they gave away a penalty try, and were saved by Donegan's adept kicking. Albersau's roll of form continued with a real surprise as they turned over Toonmar by 20 points – shut up, turning over is a thing – but less surprising was the director of the win: Bill Gerhard, who notced up 28 points, including his 14th try of the season. Dean Olafson scored his 6th, but it wasn't enough to inspire Ballat to a win over Deathshriek.

Albersau 33 – 13 Toonmar
Ballat 17 – 39 New Cleethorpes Deathshriek
Central 17 – 26 Highmark City Irish
Combined Veterans 17 – 14 Nowy Orpington Cellists
Tourseilles 49 – 10 Priassa

Round 17

A closely-fought round: the only decisive margin of victory saw the two bottom-ranked sides face off; Central are still without a victory with only one game to play. A couple of drop-goals from Fitz Bonenfant sealed the Cellists' fate at home against Tourseilles. Albersau's winning streak came to an end in New Cleethorpes as Mike McCall bagged two tries and 15 points. Highmark City Irish eked out another close win thanks to a Reilly drop-goal. Even closer was Toonmar against the Veterans: it was still 0-0 after 70 minutes, and then Roda dropped two goals, but Diller was on hand for his 14th try of the season, which Liang converted.

Highmark City Irish 10 – 8 Ballat
New Cleethorpes Deathshriek 15 – 6 Albersau
Nowy Orpington Cellists 10 – 19 Tourseilles
Priassa 40 – 18 Central
Toonmar 7 – 6 Combined Veterans

Round 18

Freed of title concerns and with relegation decided, some carefree, exciting rugby was on offer on the last day. An astonishing result saw just three points change hands between Albersau and the Irish, the game decided as Gerhard missed a penalty and Reilly knocked one over; the result meant Irish snatched the key 4th place ahead of the Northerners. Gerhard trudged off disappointed, but still ended up the leading points scorer for the season and the virtually unanimous choice for Player of the Season. Priassa picked up an upset over the Cellists, though it wasn't enough to save them from Division 2 rugby next season. Ballat and the Veterans tied on 28 apiece, each eschewing penalties to go for tries. Tourseilles showed their dominance by obliterating the team from whom they inherit the title, Deathshriek failing to score any points as the French backs ran rampant. But the biggest news of the day was Toonmar's savaging of Central – the 10th placed side actually faring better, by all of one point, than on their previous meeting. Diller ended the season with 19 tries after grabbing five of the 14 that rained in.

Ballat 28 – 28 Combined Veterans
Highmark City Irish 3 – 0 Albersau
New Cleethorpes Deathshriek 0 – 41 Tourseilles
Nowy Orpington Cellists 25 – 30 Priassa
Toonmar 101 – 0 Central

GeoMetNet Rugby Union Premiership
Season 1

The inaugural season of the Ad’ihan Rugby Union Board's Premiership league system threw up an incredible five points-less draws in the Power 6 and one in the Special 6, as eighteen teams battled it out over the course of anywhere from 30, to 33, to 43 matchdays for ultimate glory.

After three matchdays in the Power 6, it was clear that one club, Rugby Dullham, were set to dominate the season, with the maximum 12 league points possible from three games and averaging 27 points scored a game. By Matchday Four County Stanley Rugby, an offshoot of the eponymous football club, had the dubious honour of having taken part in two 0-0 draws, about the rarest thing that can happen in rugby union.

By Matchday 8, the cut-off point for Premiership Cup entry (all Power 6 teams are eligible, as are the top two in the Super 12 at this point), the league table had changed slightly. Rugby Dullham's strong start to the season had suffered the setback of an 0-1-4 run and now lay second from bottom, just two points clear of CRXV Mont-Pluie, who were obviously not enjoying the same success that has been savoured in the past by their hockey and football counterparts.

Matchday 10 saw the third 0-0 draw, but so close was the table at this point, two wins on the trot had propelled Rugby Dullham back to the top of the table on points difference, with the top four clubs all tied on 22 points and the bottom two clubs six points back.

4 Oldbridge Club 10 5 1 4 115 147 -32 22
5 CRXV Mont-Pluie 10 3 2 5 115 100 15 16
6 County Stanley Rugby 10 3 2 5 109 121 -12 16

The next 0-0 draw came just three matchdays later, when CRXV Mont-Pluie and Flitton Rovers RFC played it out in Flitton, the second and third times respectively the clubs had been involved in points-less draws.

County Stanley Rugby, who played out a 0-0 draw on Matchday 2 with CRXV Mont-Pluie, then finished the run of five 0-0 draws in the first 14 matchdays with a repeat performance against the same team, this time away in Mont-Pluie. Thankfully that would be the last of the 0-0 draws.

Fast-forward to Matchday 24. With 24 league points still on offer, only one team, CRXV Mont-Pluie, was mathematically out of the title running, sitting 34 points out of first. Rugby Dullham led the league, with a six-point gap to second placed City of Ad’ihan.

On Matchday 26, CRXV Mont-Pluie pulled off an unlikely victory against league leaders Rugby Dullham, temprarily stunting their chase for the Premiership and Power 6 titles. However, City of Ad’ihan found themselves on the wrong side of a one-point, 7-6 game against Flitton Rovers, and could not take advantage. With four games left, only three teams were mathematically left in the chase, and even then, third-placed Oldbridge Club twelve points back looked unlikely to be able to overcome their -50 point difference.

The title went some way to being officially clinched on Matchday 27 in a showdown match between the top two teams, with Rugby Dullham beating City of Ad’ihan 13-8 at Athlete's Stadium, putting them ten points clear with three games to go, and barring an unlikely setback would see them take the title. However, the battle at the bottom was far from over, as while CRXV Mont-Pluie had already sealed their place in the Special 6 tournament, just four points separated County Stanley Rugby from Flitton Rovers RFC, with the latter looking to escape the potential drop.

Matchday 28 saw Rugby Dullham pegged back to six points with a tough 14-10 loss away at Oldbridge Club while City of Ad’ihan completed a comfortable 31-12 victory over County Stanley. However, with CRXV playing spoiler by beating Flitton 18-0, there was still no change at the bottom.

The title was finally officially clinched with one game to spare on Matchday 29, when Rugby Dullham beat Flitton Rovers 16-10 in Flitton and condemned the hosts to an appearance in the Special 6. The battle for second place remained on, though, as Oldbridge Club in third completed a 19-3 rout of City of Ad’ihan to move to within two points of the visitors.

A final-day win for City of Ad’ihan, coupled with a shock 3-6 loss for Oldbridge to Flitton, ended that chase, too, and settled the Power 6 for the season, with Flitton Rovers and CRXV Mont-Pluie both being relegated to the Special 6, to commence two weeks after the end of the Power 6. Another five weeks of rugby awaited the two clubs to see if either could maintain their top-flight status.

There will be some form of Heroes Cup (a sort of UEFA cup) this season. The eight nations accepted onto the Club World Challenge Cup (the main tournament, subject to name changes) have TWO qualification places for this, to be decided however they wish.

Just to clarify, the nations on the CWCC are Somewhereistonia, Norwellia, Sorthern Northland, Septentrionia, Candelaria And Marquez, Taeshan, West Zirconia and Quintessense of Dust. Adihan, will have FOUR teams in the Heroes Cup to help make up for them not being in the CWCC.

The start date for the tournament will be shortly after the completion of the Rugby World Cup. The Heroes Cup (subject to format change based on numbers) will most likely start at the end of the CWCC group stage.

Not ones to be left behind by their Union counterparts, the first season of the West Zirconian Rugby League Championship has been played.

Rugby League is a sport largely confined to the north-east of West Zirconia, with teams in St. Martin and Redwood to make it look vaguely national. In truth, the presence of the St. Martin Wasps is probably the only reason there is television coverage of the sport - otherwise it would get relegated to regional sports programmes.

No team dominated the competition to start with, and by half-way two teams, Anderton Aardvarks and Mort Park Meerkats, had attempted to break away. During the second half Banks Badgers had also put themselves in contention, but Anderton held on to win the first Rugby League Championship.
