The commonwealth has very recently discovered FLT and I was toying with the idea of a thread about them contacting less than FT nations . A few details:
The commonwealth does not have a interstellar empire. They don't even have a single colony.
The commonwealth does not have a vast fleet of space craft. They are still designing their first custom built one for FTL and long term space travel (but that hasn't stopped the navy and air force arguing over who will be in charge of it). What they ave currently are kinda adhoc. Thus invasion risk is zero.
They have had contact with aliens for some time but have never first contacted someone else.
The FTL tech widens naturally occurring pico-worm holes so as to send a craft. They never occur at ground level but always in a gravity well. Thus in the case of earth like planets at about twenty thousand feet, but at apparently random locations. However they are stable, well as far as the commonwealth have figured so far.
They still don't know exactly how the devices they use for FTL actually work at a theoretical physics level. But they do know how to work them (at a 'you do X, Y happens and never do Z' level).
They are currently lobbing hundreds of pathfinder drones threw the worm holes, the FLT device (Vibe) can be set for different frequencies and so arrive at different locations. The pathfinders are very cheap and simple. They only send back data about the locations and relative brightnesses of stars (so they can figure out where the heck it wound up), gravitational forces and the pressure and composition of the atmosphere (so to ascertain if it's worth while (or even sensible) to send a more advance probe to investigate, gas giants are fun and all but when you've seen one ;-)).
There will be no 'landing on the white house lawn' as I would like to try and keep the scenario somewhere close to realistic.
In short they are just beginning to move into the FT area.
Yeah and the peoples are furry.
Something I would like to try is have a thread with someone where all the posts are in the form of tweets and blog entries of a couple (and their friends comments, etc) of the 'little' people. As in the ones not in control, on my side probably a translator or general paper pusher with the commonwealth's delegation that eventually turn up. The other side could be any thing, from a Joe six pack, one of the guards, some guy who works in a music shop (that one might be interesting), etc, but no one of importance.
Note: Only one..well maybe two, I don't have that kinda of time to do more than that as I can see those threads taking a fair bit of work.
