After losing World Cup of Hockey 7 on home ice to Valanora in a thrilling 5-game series, Qazox now has the chance to do the same as the 8th World Cup of Hockey begins in Valanora next week.

Many changes for the team, as only 8 players are returning from four years ago.

15-03-2009, 11:36
Once again, in an effort to draw ratings, the Secristan Department of Sports is sending a team of "Ice Girls" to the World Cup of Hockey. You know, those girls who clean the goal crease during most stoppages in play.

They have shown to have a real ability to distract opposing goalies and then score, as was the case in this example prior to Lauren N. taking a penalty shot in a recent league game. It also shows the uniform the team will wear, though it will be green and gold.

The girls have not released their last names, so you must go by only their first initial.

Roster and Schedule announced

Just 6 years ago, Prux ruled the hockey world by stunningly winning the 6th World Cup of Hockey, using a team of walruses (or is it walrusii, can't remember). But since then, a gradual drop in talent, and rank, now leaves the one-time champions a dark-horse team to win and a slight favorite just to qualify for the next round.

2 years ago, the team used Circus players and was swept in the quarterfianls against Qazox.

But a lot has changed in the last 2 years, except the hockey team. It the team stinks. But at least we aren't using Carnies or walruses/walrusii this time around, right? We are using clones of a man named John R. (last name withheld by law). Since all 24 players look exactly alike, to distingush them, they all have different Greek Alphabet letters as their "last names".

We present to you, the World Cup of Hockey 8, Prux National Hockey Team, also known as the Clones!

Sarzonia Stars

Coach: Mark Browers, 51
Assistant: Tom Crosby, 64
Goalie coach: Pete Peeters, 47

ROSTER
GOALTENDERS (starter in bold)
1 Matt Peterson, 27 6-foot-1, 205 pounds
Quick reflexes, uses a butterfly style most of the time. Puck handling is suspect.
30 Joe Cullen, 32 5-foot-11, 185 pounds
The primary backup because of his experience, reads angles and plays aggressively.
35 Kieran Barker, 23, 6-foot-3, 210 pounds
Young, being given an opportunity to learn at the international level until his time to start.

DEFENCEMEN
First pair
3 Erik Weinert, 22, 6-foot-2, 190 pounds.
Hard hitter, can pitch in on the power play, but usually isn't the point man with the man advantage.
5 Craig Langhorn, 35, 5-foot-10, 170 pounds. Team captain.
Relies on positioning and experience to defend against all comers. Paired with Weinert to help the young player learn.

Second pair
2 Lorne Davis, 26, 6-foot, 200 pounds.
Not super-fast, but an extremely hard hitter. Plays a stay-at-home defensive style.
6 Mia Chretién, 23, 5-foot-8, 145 pounds.
Can move the puck in and out of the zone well. Sometimes used on the front line during penalty kills.

Third pair
7 Joel Fitzgerald, 29, 5-foot-11, 185 pounds.
Not known as a hitter, but has better make-up speed than any other Stars defender.
18 Jack Bradley, 24, 6-foot-3, 215 pounds.
Size, speed and hard hitting make him a feared defender to go up against.

FORWARDS
First line
Left wing: 8 Sylvan Turcotte, 23, 6-foot-1, 175 pounds.
Lefty shooter with the hardest shot on the team. Led his league with 38 goals in 54 games.
Centre: 9 Joe Perkins, 27, 5-foot-11, 180 pounds. Alternate captain.
Best at winning faceoffs of any Stars player. A gritty player who'll willingly go into the boards, but that occasionally results in injuries.
Right wing: 10 Steven Miller, 31, 6-foot-1, 200 pounds. Alternate captain.
Hardest worker on the team, also willing to go into the boards and play physically.

Second line
Left wing: 13 Cameron Granato, 24, 5-foot-10, 180 pounds.
A righty shooter even though he plays left wing. Provides some scoring punch for the second line (24 goals in 52 games).
Centre: 15 Jon Tippett, 33, 6-foot, 185 pounds.
Led the league in assists and is a frequent presence on the power play as a distributor.
Right wing: 17 Mark Ridley, 28, 6-foot-3, 200 pounds.
Another prolific scorer, he scored 31 goals in 50 games for his team two years ago.

Third line
Left wing: 21 Marco Osterland, 31, 6-foot-1, 205 pounds.
Strong presence on special teams, has some scoring touch but is better known for his defence.
Centre: 23 Giancarlo Ovecezcu, 27, 6-foot-2, 210 pounds.
Uses leverage and cat-like reflexes to win defensive end face offs. Good puck handler.
Right wing: 24 Ray Olendorff, 22, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds.
Plays hard, but gets winded easily. Until he works into better hockey shape, he'll be on the third line.

Fourth line
Left wing: 25 Alan Donald, 27, 6-foot-1, 215 pounds.
Sarzonia's designated enforcer, led the league in penalty minutes three consecutive seasons.
Centre: 26 Troy Hammer, 28, 6-foot-3, 230 pounds.
Built like a gridball linebacker, he hits like one. Would be an enforcer if he didn't have a surprisingly deft touch in front of the goal.
Right wing: 34 Chris Buck, 33, 6-foot-2, 205 pounds.
On the checking line because, well, he's a good checker. Does so cleanly.

World Cup of Hockey 8 Roster

To date, the Rockets are still looking for significant hockey success. Though not as hopeless as that football team can seem to be, Newmanistan is looking to make a little more noise in their 3rd Frozen World Cup. (Get used to this reference from us, I like it better then “World Cup of Hockey!”)

Hockey in Newmanistan is defensive and tight-checking, and we don’t mind dropping this gloves. (This is what happens when the team owner roots for the Flyers). If you have a “Crosby”, you better be prepared to see him high-sticked, cross-checked, slashed, etc etc. We do try to keep all of our hitting within the rules, all kidding aside.

QHL.com/World Cup of Hockey 8/QazoxvsGreenwombat (http://wikistates.outwardhosting.com/wiki/World_Cup_of_Hockey_8)

Three 2nd period goals broke open a close game between these regional rivals, as Qazox defeated their neighbors, 5-2. The Pheonix did give up the first goal of the game, to Jonathan Sato at 2:19 of the first period. But 4 consecutive goals, starting with Maicha Harven at 17:23 of the first, and ending with Michel Haas' goal at 11:26 of the second gave Qazox a 4-1 lead at the 2nd intermission. The two teams traded goals in the third period, and towards the end, a bit of scuffling between the two teams led to a fight, but Qazox, despite having to break in 12 WCoH rookies, performed well in what might have been the toughest game in their group. Up next is Somewhereistonia, who had a bye yesterday.

Despite scoring first, the wombats were soundly beaten by their eastern neighbors, Qazox 5-2 in the opening match of the 8th World Cup of Hockey.

Jonathan Sato and Ralph Rittenhouse each had a goal, but it was Michel Haas of Qazox leading the way with 2 second period goals, one of which was a power play goal, after Richard Shaner was called for roughing.

Despite the loss, the Wombats did manage to put decent shots on the Qazoxian net, but Christer Ossiansson stopped 23 of the team's 25 shots.

Up next for the Wombats is Myedvedeya, who lost to Sarzonia in the ealy match today 3-1. The loser of this game (if there is one) would be 0-2, and in danger of being eliminated in the following match.

Clones Edge Falcons

Lead by 37 saves by John Βeta, Prux knocked off Regional Rivals Taeshan 1-0 to open the 8th World Cup of Hockey. A 2nd period goal qat 5:29 from the stick of John Rho was the only goal of the night, a backhanded shot that deflected off of Ayele Borreman's right shoulder and trickled just into the net.

Overall, it was a sloppy game by the Clones, who were whistled for 7 penalties, 5 of which were high-sticking. John Beta was especially briliant on a 3:13 5-on-3 power play for Taeshan, stopping all 11 shots he faced during that time.

Up next for the Clones is Lurikastan, who beat Tocrowkia by the same 1-0 scoreline. This early clash will leave one team at 2-0-0, and in control of the group.

THE ROCKET REPORT

ROCKETS FALL IN OPENER

Valanora- Valanora’s power-play was clicking early, as the defending champions converted three chances with the man advantage in the first period. Two of the goals were scored by Alauthien Gatholonel, who scored at the 3:29 and 13:52 marks of the period, with a score by Sidhimion Mithlithil on a blistering shot from the point at 10:13 of the period sandwiched between the scores. It was a tough first period for the Rockets, who were called for four minor penalties. However, Newmanistan had power play chances of their own, getting three such chances in the opening period as the referee was calling everything early. The game remained 3-0 until the 3rd period as Tamrauthon Haeviel scored with just 3:03 remaining in the game to finish off the rout. Valanora outshot the Rockets 35-22 in the game, including a 14-5 advantage in the first period. They were an impressive 3-for-7 on the power play while Newmanistan struggled, going 0-for-6 and only getting four shots on those chances. While Newmanistan was the underdog in this game, a far better effort will be needed against Cassadaigua in their next game.

Our Three Stars of the Game:

3rd: Sidhimion Mithithil (1G, 1A)- Valanora
2nd: Morenthon Gaolnmin (22 saves on 22 shots)- Valanora
1st: Alauthien Gatholonel (2G, 0A)- Valanora

MILLIONAIRES SHUTOUT

The Million-Rusa Girls looked like they should be carrying a squeegee instead of a hockey stick last night. They were played by Sorthern Northland quite handily, and the 2-0 final score really doesn’t tell the whole story. If not for amazing goaltending by Maureen T, who made 57 saves on 59 shots, the final score could have been much worse. Sorthern Northland had 27 shots on goal in the first period alone, to only 2 for us. Unbelievably, the teams went into intermission still in a scoreless tie. “We hoped that by overcoming our horrible first period, we would be inspired in the second to come out stronger, and that Sorthern Northland would be frustrated by how things went down,” explained head coach Tara B. The second period was a little better as far as shots were concerned with Sorthern Northland’s advantage shrunk to 18-8, but still 45-10 for the game at that point. They had managed one goal, by Jean Fleury on a deflection of a shot taken from Paul Gendron. Maybe then, Secristan would come to life thinking that they could steal this game, but Sorthern Northland did not let up, getting 10 shots on goal in the first 8 minutes, with Maureen T turning them all aside. Eventually, they solved Maureen for a second goal with seven minutes left in the period. It was the last shot that Sorthern Northland took for the game. They were up 59-12 in shots at that point, until the Ice Girls suddenly came to life and got 10 shots on goal late for a total of 22. The game didn’t see many penalties, Sorthern Northland was 0-for-3 on the PP, and Secristan 0-for-2.

The Secristan Department of Sports were very pleased with the amount of pay-per-view purchases the game generated as fans were excited to see the girls in action. However they know this will get old real quick if they don’t play better next time. The team has a bye to figure out where things went wrong, and then will look to correct them against Lovisa.

Inter-line friendly ends in OT with win for weaker lines

VALANORA— Team Ad’ihan's World Cup of Hockey debut has yet to begin thanks to a first-day bye, but half the team has already tasted defeat in the hockey rink here in Valanora.

Head coach François Riviera had the top two starting lines play the bottom and reserve lines in a 36-minute warmup friendly today ahead of the team's first match against Taeshan tomorrow. Or it would have been a 36-minute warm up, had the weaker lines not been able to keep the top lines out.

Playing 12 minute periods, Team Ad’ihan B held Team Ad’ihan A scoreless through two before breaking out with a goal 1:21 into the third to open the scoring, with defenceman Hugh Therrien hitting a slapshot from the slot on the powerplay.

Team Ad’ihan A seemed to respond by losing confidence in each other, allowing fourth-liner Taylor Bowden, who scored 14 goals (18 assists) for his club Dalinn last season, to double Team B's advantage less than 30 seconds later on 1:47.

That seemed to spark Team A, and with the Team B defence off for a line change with the reserve defence of Sebastien Firrant and Greg Owen making their way off the bench, Josh Law found Sean Buckley in space and Buckley put the puck past the hapless Enzo Cocci on 3:51.

A tripping call against Adam Jackson of Team B barely a minute later provided Team A with another chance to tie the game up, which they duly took when Buckley took off down the ice on the odd-man rush and, through on net, was tripped by Therrien, resulting in a penalty shot which Buckley coolly put past Cocci.

There would be no further scoring, and at the end of 36 minutes coach Riviera decided an overtime period would be played. Ultimately Team A ended up playing the majority of this period a man down after captain Tom Anderson was called for charging, and Team B ended the game 2:14 into the extra period when Bowden scored his second of the day with a one-time shot.

Speaking to the Team Ad’ihan Hockey online team after the game, Riviera said he told the players to play the match with full fervour, as if they were playing an actual competitive WCoH game. "We need the practice, all the practice we can get," he said.

Sarzonia
17-03-2009, 16:14
It was a strange day to be a Sarzonian in the ice hockey rink.

Gone was Sarzonia's traditional hockey coach. Harold Clark announced his retirement between Sarzonia's final appearance in the 19th Don Cherry Cup and the start of this World Cup of Hockey in Valanora. Gone too was the team's traditional nickname. The Blizzards now were known as the Stars after the government announced that all teams would share the nickname of the Sarzonian national football side.

Mark Browers knew he had a lot riding on his debut stint as a national team manager. He had to assemble a team that wasn't used to playing together and meld them somehow into a team. His team would play its first match after a long absence against a team of bears.

"Whatever you do," Browers warned after a skate-through on the eve of match day, "don't try to outdrink a bear." He heard laughs from the team, which found unexpected humour in the quote, but Browers was serious. Fortunately, no Stars players would try to outdrink a bear. What they would do is try to outskate, outscore and beat the bears of Myedvedeya.

It worked. Matt Peterson made 23 saves and Mark Ridley scored a power play goal and added an empty net goal and an assist to lead the Stars to a 3-1 victory in the first match of the eighth World Cup of Hockey.

Center Joe Perkins knew before he skated out for the opening faceoff that his opponent would be a bear, but when the large, black ursine lined up against him with hockey stick in hand, he gulped inwardly. I hope he doesn't decide that I'm lunch, he thought as the Valanoran referee stood over the centre dot with the puck hanging out waiting to drop.

Myedvedeya would draw first blood in the contest, getting a short-handed goal when defenceman Erik Weinert telegraphed his attempted pass toward left wing Sylvan Turcotte and turned the puck over. Peterson had no chance to stop the breakaway and Myedvedeya led 1-0 with 6:23 remaining in the first period.

"Get it together!" Browers yelled. "Get it together!"

Sarzonia would do that four minutes later. Weinert faked a pass to Turcotte and saw Ridley sneaking toward the net on Sarzonia's second power play opportunity of the first period. He wristed a pass to Ridley, who one-timed the shot past the Myedvedeyan goaltender, making the score 1-1 with 2:18 left in the first period.

The second period was all Sarzonia, although the Stars could only score one goal as a result. They fired 17 of their 34 shots in the period, but only left wing Cameron Granato could tickle the twine, giving Sarzonia a 2-1 lead at 17:23 of the second period.

"Keep the pressure on them," Browers said in the dressing room after the second period. "We have a chance to bring this one home. Let's get it done."

Sarzonia came out aggressively in the third period, highlighted by a powerful hip check by defenceman Jack Bradley against a smaller bear. However, the Myedvedeyan goalie stood on his head in the period, denying shot after shot, frustrating Stars players until the Myedvedeyan coach pulled him with 1:06 remaining. Finally, Ridley intercepted a cross-rink feed and fired it down the length of the ice, giving Sarzonia its long-awaited insurance goal with four seconds left.

"It feels great to win a match just before a bye," Ridley told a reporter for Valanora's cable TV programme broadcasting the match. "We're going to use the time to get ready for our next opponent."

And not try to outdrink a bear.

Tocrowkia
17-03-2009, 20:25
Anything that knows anything about Tocrowkia knows this: Tocrowkians love hockey. In a nation where it's cold more often than not how could such a sport not thrive? Ice hockey has a long and proud tradition in the Tocrowkian Reich dating back hundreds of years. And so the inaugural tounrey of the Nordics hockey squad was being watched with excitement by billions.

However, even before they took to the ice there was a dark specter hovering above. It was the ghost of the Nordics past, and it soon became Nordics present. They dropped their first game in the WBC. They did likewise at the World Bowl, and now the Nordics have the dubious honor of having three-peated an opening defeat in major tournaments. "I didn't feel that it [the past] was a factor in tonight's game." Audrey Haviland said in a post-game interview. "Of course it was in the back of our minds, but I don't feel that it was the reason we lost. We had our chances and we didn't pull through when we needed to."

"We just have to put it behind us the next time we go out there. We need to turn this around right now. Right the fuck now." Justin Michahelles said after the game. He is obviously eager to avoid the honor of joining his counter-parts in the World Bowl and the WBC in leading a losing team his first time around.
Cassadaigua

Andrew’s Blog

My name is Andrew Preston and it is an honor to skate for Cassadaigua here in this World Cup of Hockey. I first put on a pair of skates at age three thanks to my parents, and was learning to skate soon after I learned how to walk. Growing up in the northern part of the country where it is colder, my parents mantained a sheet of ice in the backyard for me and my siblings to skate on. My sister Allyson is three years older, and Brian, my brother would be born two years after me, but he was on skates just as early in his life. Neither of my parents played professionally hockey. My mother just never got into it, and my father had some experience with it. Dad played hockey in college and was invited to training camp for the Rutland Rangers after he graduated, but he did not make the team. He tried to get a minor league deal but did not get an offer from the highest minor league level. The level he did get one from just wasn’t worth it, and he pursued a career in his field of study from college. We’re glad for that, because he had a strong career in bookkeeping. I know some people look at our roster and think that us group of guys are only here to make some kind of political statement mainly because it is happening so close to the recent protests of the Men’s Civil Rights organization, MEN during the soccer team’s successful attempt to qualify for their World Cup. None of us, however, feel that we earned our roster spot in order to get minorities on the team. I’m 27 years old and have been playing hockey my whole life and I like to think that I am pretty good at it. Without a doubt, I feel that I am here on merit. The ladies have welcomed all of us, and quite frankly, it just hasn’t been an issue in the locker room. Separate actual changing rooms of course, but we come together as a team promptly and get along very well.

We began our first international game against Septentrionia, and a goal scored by Rachel Castelli two minutes into the first period immediately gave us confidence. Given that we have been competitive in the other sports that we have attempted at this level, we didn’t really think hockey would be any different, but we had no way of knowing for sure until we hit the ice. Play was pretty intense for a while after that, and that’s just how it should be. Melanie Roy gave us great goaltending, including midway through the second period when Septentrionia had a full two minute five-on-three advantage. After keeping it 1-0 through two, we scored five minutes into the third period. I got the secondary assist on the goal Danielle Castleberry, and it was pretty big to get up by two at that point. Septentrionia did what they could, but Melanie was just too tough, stopping all 32 shots that they fired at her, and she was rightfully named the game’s first star. As a team, we put 29 shots on goal. Our next game will be against Newmanistan, who lost to Valanora. It might seem early, but there are only five games in qualifying so every game is very important, especially this one which could go a long way in determining who makes it out of Group A.

"a 4-0 victory just concluded, as Kelssek made up for their baffling 4-0 loss to Lovisa in the first game. Head coach Craig Gilbert is here with me, Mr. Gilbert, what do you think was important in that match?"

Craig Gilbert scratched his cheek. "Hmmm... well, I think it was very important that we right the balance of the universe, which is why I instructed the team that they absolutely must win 4-0 or the entire planet might be sucked into a micro black hole caused by disturbances in the space-time continuum. I know a physicist at the University of Kirkenes who was very adamant on this point."

"So when they got that fourth goal, you must have felt quite satisfied."

"Yes, indeed, that is why I instructed the team to get into the crease and block every inch of the goal for the remaining 6 minutes. Make sure we didn't score, and make sure they didn't score."

"Do you believe that the universe was saved by your actions?"

"Yes indeed, I think this particular quantum mechanics crisis has well and truly been resolved."

"Congratulations on the win, Mr. Gilbert. Thank you for speaking to us."

"My pleasure."

Qazox dominated Somewhereistonia 4-2, in a game that wasn't as close as it seems. Qazox spent most of the night short-handed, thanks to 3 cross-checking penalties and 2 double-minors for high-sticking. While Oscar Maresca wants to have more young players play in games like this, the hard-hitting play could spell trouble for the Phoenix later in the tourney, as more experienced teams will take advantage of the power-play oppertunities.

Up next for Qazox is an off day. Hopefully, Oscar Maresca can control the high spirits of the younger members of the team in practice.

Clones Edge Lurikastan

John Βeta had a 2nd straight shutout, this time stopping only 17 shots on net, as the Clones improved to 2-0-0 in the tourney and are now a win away from the quarterfinals.

A big change from yesterday's game, as the Clones played more cohesively, and kept Lurikastan from gaining any substansial advantages in the defensive zone. John Sigma scored the lone goal, early in the 3rd period at 2:43.

Up next for the Clones is Tocrowkia, who had tonight off. A win would send the Clone into the next round, as would a tie and if the Lurikastan-Ad’ihan game ends in a tie.

THE ROCKET REPORT

HOCKEY NOT OUR THING?

Valanora- Two and out. No goals scored. The performance for the Rockets in the 8th edition of the Frozen World Cup was a disgrace, and when the Empire returns for the ninth version, expect to see a completely overhauled roster. It’s quite amazing to think that the Rockets are already officially eliminated from the competition, because it seems as though things just started, but that is indeed the case. The losses to Valanora, and now Cassadaigua have the Rockets at 0-2 and both of those opponents at 2-0. With only four games to be played, the best that we could do would be to tie the nations, but we would lose out on the tiebreakers. While the team will do its best to try and salvage a 2-2 record anyway, there is no question that this is very disappointing. Apparently, Newmanistan just is not good at these sports where you need to shoot something into a goal. (Editors Note: Then explain the Lacrosse success, please?)

Against Cassadaigua, Newmanistan had a better showing then they did in their opener and peppered Melanie Roy with 15 shots in the opening period. For the defensive minded team, this was a big accomplishment, though it was probably a let down given that the goalie did not allow any in. The defense was doing a great job against the Cassadagan forwards. Kathleen Doyle, generously listed at 5’11” on their roster sheet struggled to find any open ice to create scoring chances. The Cassadaigua goal came in the second period, and it was generated by their third line. With the defense unable to remove Allen Johnson from the top of the crease, the winger deflected a shot from the point perfectly by Sam Luccitelli to make it 1-0. It would be the only goal of the game as Cassadaigua made strong adjustments after the first period and limited the Rockets to just four shots in the second and only seven in the third. Cassadaigua slightly outshot the Rockets, 27-26. They were 0-for-6 on the power play while Newmanistan was 0-for-2. Some members of the Newmanistanian media expressed displeasure in the discrepancy of the amount of penalties called against each team, but those numbers are pretty accurate based on who played well tonight, and who was sloppy. With the team eliminated, Marty Bronstein will be in goal for the next game against Septentrionia.
Sarzonia

At Stars practice before the match against Green wombat

"C'mon! That wasn't crisp enough!"

The shrill voice of Sarzonia coach Mark Browers pierced the practice rink in Raynor City. He skated over toward the objects of his ire, center Joe Perkins and left wing Sylvan Turcotte. The two players were working on an offensive set in Sarzonia's four-on-four formation.

Before Browers could get to his players, he heard and felt a loud THUD. Before he knew it, he slowly picked himself up off the ice as the rest of the team suddenly laughed. He started brushing parts of the ice off as he slowly reached Turcotte and Perkins.

"We need to be faster with those passes," Browers said. "Green wombat is not a team we can afford to be slow against."

"Coach, I'm doing the best I can," Perkins said, more than a little irritated.

"I'm not talking about your pass," Browers said, turning to a very surprised Turcotte. "You should have shaken off that defenceman at centre ice."

"I did," Turcotte protested. "I had a half-step on Fitzie."

"Some of the guys on the teams we're facing in this round are faster than Fitzie," Browers said, adding edge to his voice as he responded to Turcotte. "You're not skating at full speed.

"Everyone," Browers yelled, turning to look at as many of his players as he could. "Twenty laps around the ice. Now move!" Browers paid no attention to the grumbles and whines of the players as they began the 20 laps their coach had ordered.

After the players returned to the dressing room following practice and Browers walked in, he stopped short. There was former Blizzard coach Harold Clark. Even though the team won its first match of the eighth World Cup of Hockey, Clark was there to offer a pep talk. Not just to the players, but to their coach.

"You guys are working hard," Clark said. "But not smart. You need to be smoother in your transitions and you need to be sharper on the penalty kill."

"But coach, Myedvedeya were 0-for-5 on the power play," defenceman Jack Bradley said. "We only allowed two shots on goal against a bigger team."

"And Matt Peterson made brilliant saves on both," Clark said. "You need to do a better job of clogging the passing lanes and forcing bad passes on the penalty kill. Look at how Myedvedeya scored a shorthanded goal against you. That's what you need to do to other teams."

Finally, the players showered, dressed and left, leaving Browers and Clark alone. Clark looked at the man who replaced him as national team coach.

"You're riding the guys a little too hard," Clark said. This drew Browers's attention. Clark was never known as a player's coach. For him of all people to suggest that he lighten his touch with team suggested that he should at least consider it.

"What do you mean, Harold?"

"Joel is one of the fastest players on this team, and frankly, on most teams here in Valanora," Clark said. "Turcotte getting a half-step on him is like getting a full step on many of the defenders you're likely going to face. In case you hadn't noticed, the ice here isn't exactly up to Woodstock standards."

As soon as Clark finished that sentence, Browers rubbed his right side near his posterior. He recalled that fall he took on the way to admonish Turcotte and Perkins. Perhaps getting in a drinking contest with a bear wouldn't be such a bad idea right now, he thought.

"Where was the Zamboni?"

Shit. Fuck.

"I, uh, thought Harvey was supposed to order it." Harvey was Incorporated Hockey Association vice president John Harville, who was responsible for the logistics of the tournament and who was nominally responsible for ordering everything from hotel rooms to conference room space. And yes, use of the arena's Zamboni.

"Mark, you know Harvey's a little absent-minded," Clark said. "You're going to have to call to make sure he's done his leg work. If it weren't for me calling his mobile phone five times, you wouldn't have had that hotel in Raynor City."

"That flea trap?"

"I've been in some of the rooms," Clark said. "It's simple accomodations, but that doesn't make it a flea trap. Just because you're used to swanky digs in Portland doesn't mean that a hotel with a comfortable bed, working climate control and a working shower is a flea trap. Get that notion out of your head."

"Why didn't we get the better hotel?"

"Remember, I had to call Harvey five times and get the hotel's confirmation number before you even got those rooms. If Harvey were on top of things, you would have been the first team to make reservations and you would have gotten the hotel you wanted."

"So what do you suggest I do Harold?"

"Start by being yourself," Clark said. "I get the sense you're trying to pattern yourself after me because of what we did at Cherry Cup XV. You're a funny guy, Mark. Let your humour shine through and lighten up. The team is starting to notice that you're on edge. If you are on edge, that will translate to the team. And if that happens, you have the recipe for a team that loses a match it should win."

"So do you suggest I fall on the ice again?"

"No," Clark said, chuckling at the memory of the coach taking a tumble in front of 20-plus players and assistant coaches. "What I'm suggesting is find the humour in situations your team faces. If you do fall on the ice again, laugh it off. If you have to make a funny joke about Randy Eckman running for his blankie to take the edge off, do it."

Browers chuckled. Clark knew not to put it past him to do something that corny in an effort to take the edge off his team.

"All right," Browers said. "Just be myself. OK. I'll try."

"Good luck, Mark," Clark said before he turned to leave. Before he could reach the door out of the dressing room, Browers called out.

"Harold?" Clark stopped, then slowly turned back.

"Thanks."

"Don't mention it," Clark said, turning back to the door and walking out.

A goal with 1:19 left in the third period by Larry Yoon tied the game up at 1-1, and after an uneventful OT (ooc: Is there OT in the opening rounds, ESF?) Green wombat and Myedvedeya came away with a tie, that niether team really needed to have.

So halfway through the group stage, the wombats are 0-1-1 and now must face Sarzonia. If the wombats win this game, they still have a chance at advancement, a loss and they are eliminated, and a tie, well they'll be in, just barely.

The stunner of the day was Newmanistan's quick exit from the tourney, as they cannot win a tie-breaker against either Valanora or Cassadaigua.

Matt Peterson was used to seeing a lot of shots in this game. His Stars defence seemingly abandoned him in the first period. He faced 21 shots in the frame, among 37 total for the game.

Shot number 36 came as Sarzonia led the game 2-1 with 57 seconds left. The Tocrowkian referee called for a penalty shot, saying that left wing Marco Osterland pulled down right wing Ralph Rittenhouse on a breakaway.

That incensed Coach Mark Browers, who was issued a bench minor for unsportsmanlike conduct for arguing the call. After the game, he refused to address the call, saying he'd get fined and suspended if he said what he really thought of the call.

That meant Rittenhouse would skate from centre ice one-on-one with Peterson with a crucial standings point hanging in the balance. Peterson looked out with an even expression that hid some of his nerves. He hadn't watched Rittenhouse's tendencies on penalty shots.

When the referee's whistle singled Rittenhouse that it was go time, Peterson mentally readied himself. As Rittenhouse tried a late move to his right and wrist shot through the five-hole, Peterson slid with his right blocker pad bent slightly to allow him to prevent forming a five-hole.

The save electrified the Sarzonian bench, and even Browers, still steaming over the penalty shot call, cheered his goalie's save. That stalled whatever momentum Green wombat had, and when the final whistle sounded, the Stars streamed out onto the ice to congratulate Peterson, clearly the number one star of the night for his spectacular save of a controversial penalty shot.

The loss ensured that Green wombat was eliminated in the group stages after starting out looking for all the world like a team that was a favourite to move on to the knockout stages. It left the door open for the Pheonix of Qazox to clinch a spot in the knockout stages, but it also gave Sarzonia an opportunity to earn itself an extended stay in Raynor City.

Sarzonia's next match is against Somewhereistonia, which defeated Myedvedeya 2-1, eliminating the ursines from the World Cup of Hockey. Like Sarzonia, Somewhereistonia came into this World Cup of Hockey unranked. Unlike the Stars, however, Somewhereistonia has a 1-0-1 record and two points after losing its opener to the Pheonix 4-2.

As of now, the Stars already have their sights set on Somewhereistonia. They haven't even begun thinking about the Pheonix yet.

"One match at a time," Browers said. "We can't afford to get ahead of ourselves."

"Hey!" he yelled to a gaggle of players who lined up ahead of Peterson for the hot tub in the dressing room. "Let Petey in first!"

He might not be king of the team, but for one night, Peterson would get first dibs on a trip to the hot tub and extra work with a gorgeous trainer. And why not? Thirty-six saves later, the night was his.

The press gathered around the Somewhereistonian manager, Olev Taposky eager to hear his thoughts after the win, as an unranked team, they seemed to be coping quite well. “How do you rate your chances for the tournament?” asked the first reporter to get a fully comprehensible question in.

Taposky took a second to work out what best to say “We are very happy to have won, and still be in the tournament. That's due to the hard work and determination of our squad. We were unhappy to lose the first game, but we showed our attacking potential and managed to get a couple of goals, we showed we could fight on even terms towards the latter part of the game.

We have stayed concentrated and disciplined, I won't comment on the competition as a whole, its too early to really tell anything, but of course we want to cause a surprise and I think we have the team to do that. We need to concentrate on the next game, from now on, they are all must win games, no doubt Sarzonia are a good team, but I think we have the strength and quality to beat them and we deserve to be in the next round. Thank you”.

Taposky then left to make preparations for the crucial next game, with the nagging doubt in his mind. Was the team really strong enough to get through? Soon he would find out.

THE ROCKET REPORT

EMBARASSMENT CONTINUES

Valanora- Is it over yet? All that Rockets had left to play for after the 1-0 loss to Cassadaigua was pride, given their early elimination. Also, to be a spoiler for Septentrionia and Krytenia. That second part, they are not doing a very good job with, as they lost yet again, failing to score a single goal for the third time. Yes, the team came to Valanora intending to play a tight neutral zone trap and wanting to win defensive struggles. Other then the Valanora defeat, the defense and goaltending has actually been very good. But you also have to stick the puck in the net. With one game remaining, the Rockets are faced with the potential embarrassment of not only failing to qualify, or failing to win a game, but also not even scoring one simple goal.

The first period was a well played stanza for the men in sky blue in white. They held Septentrionia to just 3 shots on goal, but the offense sputtered. Newmanistan was shooting wide, and relied too much on the dump and chase tactic only to find the aggressive Septentrionian goalie getting to the puck and making frequent clears. The Rockets themselves could only get 5 shots on goal in the period, and this was with having two power play opportunities. The trend continued until the midway point of the second period when Septentrionia’s checking line scored the first, and eventually only, goal of the game. It was pretty similar to the way Cassadaigua scored their goal in the previous 1-0 loss. They got a power forward in front of the crease and he scored on the deflection. This led to sloppy play the Rockets, taking three consecutive penalties in the final eight minutes of the second, and were fortunate not to allow another goal. The third period began strong for Newmanistan, but as time wore down, the frustration was obvious. The final five minutes of the game saw three separate fights, two of which saw a Rockets player (Dan Stover and Alexander Sedlek) draw an instigator penalty and a game misconduct. Septentrionia outshot Newmanistan 21-18 for the game. They were 0-for-8 on the power play and the Rockets 0-for-3. And if anyone complains about yet another discrepancy in the amount of penalties, you know that they are not watching the games, because the team deserves everything that is being whistled upon them due to sloppy and lazy play.

In a Spirted practice, the Phoenix stayed sharp in prepreation for the upcoming match against Myedvedeya. Qazox needs just a point, meaning a win or a tie to advance to the 2nd round of play. Myedvedeya, who was one of the teams to be eliminated from the 2nd round today, will be out to spoil Qazox' group stage, while the Pheonix will be fighting for a top seed in the knock-out rounds.

Despite having played just 2 of 4 scheduled games, Qazox still leads the WCoH in goals scored with 9, lead by Micha Lajamäki's 3 goals.

Eliminated today: Tonarius, Myedvedeya, Green Wombat and Newmanistan

(ooc to ESF: Thought so, but wasn't 100% sure...)

Ralph Rittenhouse's penalty shot with just under a minute remaining in the game was deflected just wide of the net by Sarzonia's Matt Peterson, who saved 36 of the 37 shots he faced last night; preserving the Star's 2-1 win, and eliminating the wombats.

But the wombats had their chances, as they peppered Peterson with 21 shots in the first period alone, (a team record), but only managed one Rittenhouse goal at 5:23 that gave Green wombat a brief 1-0 lead.

The Stars only sent 18 shots at Randy Eckman, but 2 got through, a 1st period goal by Steven Miller at 7:52 tied it at 1-all and Cameron Granato's game winner in the 2nd period at 17:11.

So now with tommorrow off, perhaps the Head Coach will experiment witht he lines a bit, in an effort to avoid being held winless against Somewhereistonia on Saturday night.

John Βeta Brillant Again

180 minutes.
71 saves on 71 shots.
ZERO goals allowed.

That's John Beta's World Cup of Hockey 8 line, so far. While not quite a record, it is a national record and the 3rd longest such strech in World Cup of Hockey history. Beta stopped all 25 shots he faced tonight, including a 3-on-1 break-away shot with 20 seconds remaining in teh game by Leonore Rochholz that just barely nicked the crossbar, before John Gamma cleared it out.

The Clones, though couldn't clinch a playoff berth, as they couldn't score either against a good Tocrowkia defense and their goalie, Adrian Lais, who went toe-to-toe with Beta (figureatively speaking) stopping all 26 shots she faced.

With tommorrow off, Prux will clinch a 2nd round berth, if both Tocrowkia and Taeshan fail to win each of their games.

Well, it wasn't a victory. But by the same token, it wasn't a loss either and the Nordics play-offs hopes are still alive in their first ever World Cup of Hockey. Though they had their chances, they just couldn't score against a solid Clones defense. But by the same token, neither could the Clones score against a solid Nordics defense. "It was a good result, just not the one we were looking for." Justin Michahelles said after the game. "[Adrian] Lais looked brilliant out there. I'm really proud of the effort we put up tonight." Still, the fact that the Nordics have to actually WIN a game is not lost on anyone.

"We're still looking for that first win, and we need it." Michahelles said after the game. "And that's what we're going to go out there and try to get tonight."

[OOC: Green wombat, your picking my scorers was fine. I focused on the penalty shot and didn't mention the scorers at all, so I left it for you to choose 'em!]

On the eve of Sarzonia's match against Somewhereistonia, defenceman and team captain Craig Langhorn asked the rest of the Stars to remain in the dressing room after a final skate through. When the coaches left, he gathered the team in the centre of the room.

"Look, lads," he said. "We know Somewhereistonia are new to international hockey," he said. "Truth be told, so are we. I know we've competed in the Cherry Cup before, but that was a long time ago."

He looked around the room, focusing his gaze on right wing Mark Ridley. He'd overheard Ridley talking about the Pheonix and how important that match would be. Now he was going to call him out on it.

"We can't afford to look past anyone. Somewhereistonia are still very much in the playoff chase. So are we, and so are Qazox. If we go out there with visions of facing the Pheonix when we're supposed to be facing Somewhereistonia, we're going to get killed out there. This is no time to look past any opponent. We've got a fucking job to do."

Langhorn then looked at goalie Matt Peterson, who had turned aside 59 of 61 shots he'd faced to that point. He knew Peterson was working hard -- too hard. He walked up and patted Peterson on the right shoulder with a toothy grin.

"Let's not leave Petey here out to dry again like we did against Green wombat," he said. "Thirty-seven shots is not acceptable. Let's see if we can limit Somewhereistonia to 20."

That night, as the team's players rode the team bus back to the hotel, Langhorn pulled out his portable DVD player and slipped in a DVD of Somewhereistan's first match against Qazox. He would then look at the DVD of the match against Myedvedeya, trying to see if the ursines had figured something out against Somewheristan that the Stars could adapt to their defence.

It would be a long night of studying for the Stars veterans, followed by a hard-hitting match the next evening. Langhorn hoped he and his team would be ready for the challenge.

Qazox earned their way into the quarterfinals posting a 4-0 win over a now eliminated Myedvedeya. 4 goals from 4 different scorers, and 23 saves by Christer Ossiansson, and now all that remains is a showdown with Sarzonia for the Pool title. A win or tie and Qazox takes the pool, while a Stars win gives them the title.

Also joing Qazox in the next round is the hosts, Valanora, while Krytenia, Myedvedeya, Lurikastan and Tocrowkia joined the ranks of the eliminated.

Oscar Maresca will start Natan De Eraat in net against Sarzonia, allowing Ossiansson an extra day of rest before the quarterfinals.

Harry White stared wistfully at the rink as the Kelssek team awaited their turn for the training session. Secristan's ice girls were out on their cooldown and Harry was mesmerised as they skated on the perimeter of the rink, stretching various muscles in various... exciting ways.

At the coach's whistle, they gathered at centre ice, got down on their hands and knees... one of the ice girls made eye contact and smiled at him. Harry began to feel slightly faint and felt a rhythmic, patting sensation in his left shoulder, as if his heart had picked up slightly.

"HEY!!"

The noise, coupled with jerking his head to the front to find his coach's face barely four centimetres from his, startled Harry into jumping sideways, tripping over the bench and staring in a daze at the ceiling, a point of view with Greg Gilbert was quick to fill with his face again. Phillip Adams, who had been furiously tapping Harry's shoulder as the coach had approached, looked on in concern.

"LISTEN WHEN I'M TALKING!" bellowed Gilbert.

Shaken, Harry picked himself up and rejoined the rest of the team, casting a quick last glance at the ice girls as Greg Gilbert resumed his team talk.

Mark Browers shook his head. After building a 2-0 lead in the first period on even strength goals by Cameron Granato and Mark Ridley, his defence once again failed goaltender Matt Peterson, who faced 29 shots.

"We can not afford to give up the puck in the neutral zone," he told the team after they played to a 2-2 draw against Somewhereistonia. He looked at centre Joe Perkins. "You're trying to make fancy passes when we just need a quick pass to get the puck out of the zone. Either start making the right play or you're off the first line."

Perkins stood up, ready to challenge his coach to a fight. It's not what he said that bothered him. It was the fact the coach called his player out in front of the entire dressing room.

After both men had an opportunity to calm down, Perkins realised Browers talked to him privately about his decision making with the puck and told him "take the sure pass." He'd tried a fancy pass against Myedvedeya, but the ursines were too slow to cause the turnover. He'd tried two such passes in the match against Green wombat, but Peterson bailed him out in both instances.

This time, the turnovers resulted in third period tallies, including one with just 46 seconds left.

"We've got to pick ourselves back up," Ridley told a reporter from The Portland Press-Herald. "We can't let this deflate us or we're going home."

It would not be an easy task. Going from a solid 2-0 lead against a nation that had no prior hockey experience to a 2-2 draw when a victory would have clinched a spot in the quarterfinals could be a crushing blow. Especially against the Group C juggernaut thus far, Qazox. The Pheonix expected Green wombat to be their primary competition for one of two spots in the knockout stages and dismissed Sarzonia's chances before the first puck dropped.

Now, the Pheonix were about to levy the biggest insult they could. In a do-or-die match for the Stars, they were starting their backup goalie.

"They must not have much respect for us," Peterson said. He was getting the start for the Stars. Unless he got injured, he was the man in goal for Sarzonia. Obviously, if the match were meaningless, Browers might have other ideas. But not with a berth in the quarterfinals on the line.

But first, Browers had to deal with a brush fire of his own making. There he was, standing toe to toe with Perkins, who took exception to his coach's public call out.

"Mind saying that to my face you officious fuck?" Perkins snapped.

"I have said it to you several times, after Myedvedeya, after Green wombat, and now. You're still making those passes after I asked you to make the simple pass."

"Uh, he's right," Peterson said, still dressed in full goalie gear, as he walked toward the two in an effort to keep Perkins from swinging at Browers. Or vice versa. "Remember? You told me about it on the bus back to the hotel." As he finished his sentence, Peterson lodged himself between Browers and Perkins. Unfortunately, it was just before Perkins launched a haymaker with his right hand. It connected with the side of Peterson's face, though it was only a glancing shot. Neither Browers nor Perkins were able to fire another shot as several players surrounded both and restrained them.

"You're off the team!" Browers shouted. "Pack your shit up and go!"

The next morning, Browers was awakened with a knock on his hotel room door. It was Perkins.

"Coach, I'm sorry about what happened there in the dressing room," he said.

"So am I," Browers said. "I should have talked with you in private about it."

"I should have listened to you the first time. Anyway, I've got my stuff down in the lobby. I'm going to check out and fly home."

"No," Browers said. "You're still on the team. But you're going to be a healthy scratch for the game against Qazox. Look, I know I was in the wrong too, but I can't have players taking a swing at their coach and let them get away scot free. They'll eat me alive in the dressing room."

"Coach, I'm going to apologise to the rest of the team at practice today. I think it should be up to the team if I stay here."

"All right, I can agree to that. Oh, and if you take a swing at somebody in a Pheonix uniform, try to do a better job of it." Both men laughed a hearty guffaw. Peterson walked toward the room when he saw Perkins go in. When he heard the two men laughing, he grinned slightly, even as an ice pack balanced itself on the left side of his face, next to his neck and on his shoulder.

Despite facing 38 shots on net, Natan De Eraat kept Qazox perfect at the World Cup of Hockey, stopping 36 shots in a 4-2 win for the Pheonix against the Stars.

The Stars were missing starting center Joe Perkins, who was a DNP-Coach's Decision, which usually means an undisclosed injury, and Qazox took advantage of that, scoring 2 goals in the first 3:13 of the game. Sarzonia's Steven Miller cut the lead to 2-1 with a power play goal, due to a double-minor cross check by Derek Caperton.

But Qazox blistered the net with 15 shots in the 2nd period, and built a 4-1 lead, behind 2 Kyle Johansen goals. With the results of the Somewhereistonia-Green wombat game known, the Stars launched 16 shots on net in an attempt to geta 2nd goal, which would put them into the 2nd round. With 1:07 left in the game, Star's coach Mark Browers pulled Matt Peterson for an extra attacker, Marco Osterland. OSterland would make it 4-2, 30 seconds later, but that would be all De Eraat would allow.

Qazox will face Lovisa in the quarterfinals.

The final whistle came and most of the players from Sarzonia's hockey team trudged off the ice. They'd just lost a game against Qazox when a win or a draw would have earned them a spot in the quarterfinals of the eighth World Cup of Hockey. To some of the players, they'd just punched their ticket out of the tournament.

However, coach Mark Browers and the fourth line players all knew differently. When Browers walked into a sombre dressing room, he decided to make the announcement clear as day.

"Men, we've got more work to do," he said. "Somewhereistonia defeated Green wombat 2-1." As groans punctured the air, he put his hand up. "That means we're in because of goal differential. We've got a best-of-three series against Kelssek."

Kelssek. Some of the Stars players perked up when they heard that name. Sarzonia finished a disasterous appearance at the fourth Olympic Winter Games, lowlighted by a hockey team that didn't come close to medaling.

"They're going to be tough," Browers said. "They won Group B. We've got our work cut out for us."

Especially if we keep letting 36 shots on Mattie, Browers thought. Goaltender Matt Peterson made 32 saves to keep Qazox from running away with the match. As for the Stars (2-1-1), they fired 38 shots on backup goalie Natan De Eraat. However, he only gave up two goals, including a goal to Marco Osterland who skated as a sixth attacker.

That's why I was out there, Osterland thought when he heard that goal differential got the Stars through to the quarterfinals. He'd sounded confused when Peterson skated over to the players' bench and he was told to get out with the first line.

As for the first line, centre Joe Perkins was held out of the starting lineup because of his disciplinary issue following the draw against Somewhereistonia. Browers said Perkins would skate with the third line in the first period of the opening match against Kelssek.

"He's very contrite about what happened," Browers said. "Heat of battle, that sort of thing. I and the rest of the team believe he deserves a second chance, so we'll give him one. He'll be back with the first line in the second period of Game 1 against Kelssek."

Qazoxian media outlets predicted the Stars would defeat Kelssek two games to one in the series, but Browers wouldn't hear it.

"I don't like predictions," he said. "We've got a job to do, and we can't worry about what other people say we'll do."

John Βeta almost pulled it off...

239 minutes, 45 seconds.
89 saves on 89 shots.
ZERO goals allowed.

That was John Beta's line until Harvey Riley of Ad'ihan scored with 15 seconds left in the game, on the 90th shot he faced this tourney; in a game the Clones were leading 2-0 at the time and the Ad'ihan goalie Patrick Freitag was off the ice. But a misplayed puck by John Theta allowed Riley to slip the puck past Beta's left leg to make it 2-1 Prux.

John Gamma and John Delta scored in the first and 2nd periods to give the Clones the 2-0 lead, and Ad'ihan's attempts at breaking Beta's streak would be futile until the very end. Beta's time is the 2nd longest in WCoHockey history, trailing the record set by Qazox' Jaques Maaten of 289:42 at the 6th World Cup of Hockey. Just 30 minutes shy of a new record, dang.

But not time to rest on the Clones' laurels as they will face Cassadaigua in the next round, who along with Sarzonia are the darlings of the tourney so far. But if Beta can recover from his goalless streak being snapped, the Women and MEN of Cassadaigua will not last too long in the quarters.

Stars crank up defence, beat Kelssek

By Cyndi Thompson
Special to The Press-Herald

After high shot totals conceded in the four group stage matches, the Sarzonian national hockey team defence made it their business to limit Kelssek's goal scoring opportunities and not make life hard on goaltender Matt Peterson.

Mission accomplished.

Sarzonia limited Kelssek to 18 shots on goal and Sarzonia capitalised on a five-on-three power play opportunity en route to a 3-1 victory over Kelssek in Game 1 of a best-of-three quarterfinal series in the eighth World Cup of Hockey.

"We made a conscious effort to defend better," said coach Mark Browers. "We've given up too many shots on goal and really made life too difficult for [Peterson]. We were much better, much more aggressive in the neutral zone."

Center Joe Perkins sat out the entire first period due to disciplinary issues after sitting out the final group stage match against Qazox. He lined up at centre ice with the third line at the 4:18 mark of the second period and skated two shifts before the end of the second period.

"It's an internal matter," Browers said. "We've resolved a few issues." Perkins said he got the message "loud and clear" from Browers.

"I did something in the dressing room that I shouldn't have and I paid the price for it," Perkins said. "The team felt I'd served my penance and I wanted to atone for my mistake." Players and coaches would not address the specifics of Perkins's suspension. However, he let his stick do the talking in the third period.

He lined up with the first line to start the third period and won the opening faceoff, then scored a power play goal to draw the match level at 1-1 at 1:17 of the period. He then assisted on a Steven Miller short-handed goal while defenceman Craig Langhorn served a four-minute double minor for cross checking.

"It felt good to get back in the swing of things," Perkins said. "I really wanted to make a statement out there." He logged six minutes, 19 seconds of ice time in the period after a total of one minute, 17 seconds in the second period.

Langhorn scored the final goal for the Stars into an empty net as Kelssek pulled goaltender Brian Duborny for a sixth attacker.

Game 2 is tomorrow night.

"We just wanted to get out there and play our game the best we could," Browers said. "We're going to try to do the things we do well again and hope that's going to be enough."

Qazox was stunned in game one of the Quarterfinals by Lovisa 1-0, and now face a do-or-die situation in game two tomorrow night. Lovisa's stiffling defense held the potent Qazox offense to just 18 shots on net. Qazox's 6 penalties didn't help either, as the Pheonix spent most of the 2nd period minutes a man down.

Stars lose in sudden death, face Game 3

By Cyndi Thompson
Special to The Press-Herald

Shaun O'Leary's goal with 2:23 remaining in overtime gave Kelssek a 1-0 overtime win over the Sarzonian national hockey team.

The victory evens the quarterfinal series at one win apiece and forces a third and deciding game between the Stars and Kelssek for the right to face host nation Valanora.

"We wanted this match," said coach Mark Browers. "We just couldn't generate any offence." Kelssek goaltender Brian Duborny faced 20 shots to earn the shutout. Meanwhile, Sarzonia's Matt Peterson made 25 saves.

"We paid so much attention to defending well that our offence suffered," said right wing Mark Ridley. "I think we over-emphasised defence after giving up so many shots on goal in the group stage."

Sarzonia (3-2-1) will have to get the formula right in Game 3 if they are to face 6-0-0 Valanora. For his part, Peterson blamed himself for the loss.

"I don't let that goal through we're still playing," he said sullenly. However, center Joe Perkins disagreed.

"If it weren't for Petey, we would have lost in regulation. He stood on his head against Kelssek."

In other matches, Valanora defeated Ad'ihan 5-3 and Cassadaigua defeated Prux 2-1. Both teams swept their quaterfinal series two games to none. Qazox evened their series against Lovisa with a 6-1 victory. They also play Game 3 tomorrow night.

As for the possibility that Valanora would have an advantage should the Stars survive Kelssek, Browers said that wasn't "even a thought in [his] mind.

"Right now, the only thing I'm thinking about is how to win tomorrow night's match. None of that other stuff matters."

"...so we really need to be on our best game for the decider. I cannot have anonymous performances out there. I'd better be noticing you, and I'd better be noticing you doing something good. Some guys were just completely anonymous out there! Harry! Harry White!... Where is Harry?"

The team looked around the locker room in amazement. Harry White had disappeared completely.

"Well, I suppose that explains it..."

"Ladies and gentlemen, the captain has just switched off the seatbelt sign. It may also have been the first officer, or a considerate hijacker who we don't know about yet. You are now free to move about the cabin but we do request that you fasten your seat belt at all times when seated, for your own safety. Smoking on board the aircraft is prohibited by law. Smoking in the lavatories will set off the smoke detector. We will turn you over to the authorities and you will not get the ice cream after the inflight meal. Our estimated arrival time in Kirkenes is... it's in another time zone, isn't it? I'll get right back to you, folks. Please enjoy the flight. Thank you for choosing Air Kelssek."

Harry White and Katie D. were cuddling in seats 39A and B.

"It's just that... I love you so much, Katie, and we're so good together. When I see you skate out there, take the puck and shoot, my heart just stops. I'm a hundred percent sure this is right. Once we land at the airport we'll go straight to City Hall..."

WHITE DITCHES HOCKEY MATCH TO MATCH WITH SECRISTAN ICE GIRL!

The Blueleafs are without a second-line centre after Harry White left Valanora immediately after helping Kelssek to a critical 1-0 win in the deciding game against Sarzonia to move on to the semi-finals.

Unnoticed by the coaching staff, after completing a late shift on the ice, White immediately went to the locker room, took off his skates, and headed for the airport, where he met Katie, whom White played against in the group stage when she was representing Secristan. Both are playing as the second-line centres in their national teams, in what we can only assume is some kind of romantic destiny thing.

They then boarded a flight to Kirkenes. Upon arrival, they sped off to City Hall and immediately solemnised their marriage, and capped off their whirlwind 38-hour romance at a suite in a luxurious hotel which is not one of this newspapers' advertisers.

"We're totally in love," Katie confirmed. "When the immigration officer asked if I was visiting for business or pleasure, I wasn't sure how to explain it at first, but after last night I know it was definitely pleasure. Oh yeah, you bet he knows how to handle his stick."

They have since settled down at White's downtown condo, where we can presume they are having a lot of sex. The Kirkenes Police Service has refused to confirm or deny that neighbours have made numerous noise complaints.

The Blueleafs' head coach Craig Gilbert has said White is welcome to return to play the rest of the tournament if he can get a flight back to Valanora. He added that while upset with the sudden departure, "I'm willing to cut him some slack because of how mindblowingly good they look together."

"Also I hear that this can improve performance. So it can work out well," he added.

"Besides, with the Dragons so pathetically out of the KHL playoff spots, he can probably do with something to get him going. If he wants to be on a winning team he should come back out here, though."

Andrew’s Blog

During our day off, I got to spend some time with my family, in particular my brother. It was a good time as we haven’t really been able to see much of each other lately. In one of the drawers of his hotel suite, I noticed a betting slip. He had bet on Prux! It seems that even my own family did not have any confidence in our ability to make it to the semifinals! When I asked him about it, he gave me the predictable story of saying that by betting on Prux, he would not be disappointed either way. I don’t know if I really buy into that. It was great to see him, but it also was proof of how many odds we have overcome in this tournament. No one expected much from us, but we have just continued to give it all we had. We only scored four goals in our four qualifying games, but thanks to amazing goaltending by Melanie Roy, it would be enough. Melanie is usually quiet in the locker room and chooses to lead by example on the ice, and she did a great job of that. Other then the game against Valanora, where we did not play well, she had only allowed one puck to get behind her. John Beta had a great run for Prux, including a scoreless streak of 239 minutes, which at this level is a pretty amazing number. He had carried his team, and many thought that he would be able to pick up two more wins for his team, but in the first game of our series, when we matched them save for save, we could see that Prux was getting frustrated. Their clones all seemed to have that same baffled look on their faces. I scored in the shootout of the first game, one of our three goals, to get the big opening win. Then in the second game, Beta had shut us down, and we were down 1-0 heading into the third period. A goal by an unlikely source, Brian Zuchovitsky at the 8:27 mark was a real lift to our team. Brian, a third pairing defensemen, is on the team for his defense. He has never scored more then three goals in a regular season, making him a true stay-at-home defensemen. But as we say in hockey, put the puck on net and good things can happen. He had a shooting lane and he let it rip and with big Korey Fallstrom on top of the crease, Beta was screened and never saw the shot. Originally, the official scorer credited the goal to Fallstrom, but a couple minutes later a change was properly made to Zuchovitsky. With four minutes remaining in regulation, we got the game winner a one timer from myself to Kathleen Doyle. It was a two-on-one break, and I could see the defensemen was really only concerning himself with me, and was going to leave Doyle to Beta. Anticipating this, I passed the puck a few strides earlier then I would have otherwise, because I knew good things could happen if Kathleen let it rip. After passing, I drove to the net just in case she decided to pass it back, and to give the goalie something else to concern himself with. She roofed it right under the crossbar to send us to the semifinals! Melanie was great again, with a 32 save effort for us.

We head now to the next level, where we will play Qazox. Just four teams remain now in the World Cup of Hockey, and we are one of them. The others are rich in tradition at this level while we try to build our resume. A lot of people have called our run unexpected, and maybe it is. We just haven’t really thought about it like that. Not because we’re going to say we expected to get here, because while we dreamed it, we knew that it would be difficult. It’s simply been a lot of hard work and dedication, waking up at 6:30am to get to our 8am morning skate. We get a good two hours of practice in, and then most of us take a nap during the afternoon hours. Get up at about 2 in the afternoon, have a quick bite to eat, and head back to the arena for a strategy session. Then you watch tapes and before you know it, it’s gametime. This isn’t about shocking the world, at least not right now. Nor is it about making some kind of political statement in our country to show that men can compete at a high level as well. It’s not any of that. We just lace up them up, sharpen our skate blades, tape up the stick and get out there to play the game we love.

Pheonix Stunned by Guys and Dolls!

For the first time in 8 years, Qazox will not be in the finals of the World Cup of Hockey. 2 first period goals off the stick of Rachel Castelli, and a goal that was disallowed proved to be too much for Qazox to overcome. Trailing 2-1 with just 17 seconds left, Kyle Johansen appeared to have scored the tying goal, but upon review from the booth, the puck clearly didn't clear the line, leaving the rally short. Kelssek will face Qazox for third place.

OCC: Cafundeu is in charge of the ranks and has agreed to continually update them for us. He is the one who provided me with the ranks I used for scorination this WCoH and said he will have them updated soon for post-WCoH8.

Once that happens, I'd like to challenge some of the lowest-ranked teams to friendly matches, in order to hopefully gain some ranking points coming into WCoH9.

ETA: Congrats ESF on a well-run tournament and a winning result.

Ranking points are only earned by playing in the WCoH; friendlies won't get you any.

"...meanwhile in Valanora, Kelssek have prevailed in their third-place playoff against Qazox. Jonathan Bridges watched the game in Valanora, Jonathan?"

"Yes, a great game indeed, what a performance by the Kelssek goalie to get the shutout, quite close all the way. A good performance and a good win to get the bronze medals. Kelssek two, Qazox zero."

About two seconds of silence passed.

"...and?"

"Uh, well, there were a lot of fans in the arena. Great atmosphere."

"And who was the goalscoring hero?"

More silence.

"Uh, well, who was in net?"

"Ah, yes, Benoit Laharrague really stood on his head out there."

"...You didn't watch the game, did you Jonathan?"

"Yes I did!... Okay, fine. I met some locals and we went into the forest and they had a lot of wine, some really good shit, some elven wine thing, alright? Red and white and pink also. Really good. They shared. That's what nice people do. I promoted cultural understanding, okay? I'm doing my part to resolve the Eryn Firith land disputes! You know, some of them might have relatives or friends in Eryn Firith and they'll call or e-mail or whatever and say how nice the humans from Kelssek are! You wouldn't-"

"It's okay Jon... I don't think accounting even listens to their own stations anyway. Let's move on now..."
