NSCAA Tournament- Signup Thread

Newmanistan

It looks as though there is enough interest to make the NSCAA Tournament a reality, so let’s begin signups. (For further discussion of the setup, please use the interest thread).

The amount of “automatic bids” your nation has will be determined by the number of signups, nations with an IBC (International Basketball Championships) ranking will receive 1 or 2 more automatic bids, and high ranked IBC nations an additional automatic bid. (The IBC correlations will just be temporary if this tournament has several versions, with your nation's reputation in tournament becoming what matters once reputations can get built). However, in addition to the automatic bids, the selection committee (host) will give out a to be determined amount of “at-large” bids to create a 64-team field.

When you signup, please also supply a list of schools. I’d imagine that each person would receive 2 or 3 automatic bids. With the schools, provide their win loss record (in a season of 28-32 games) and a sentence or two about them to impress the selection committee to give them a good seeding or possibly an at-large bid. Be realistic with the records. You should not have more then one undefeated team, if any. Inflated good records from top to bottom on your list will just make the selection committee think less of your nation’s league. Propose anywhere between 6 and 8 schools.

Additionally, propose a host city. Tundra Falls, Newmanistan will host the “Final Four”. Other then that, there will be 8 cities that host first and second round games and four more cities that host third round and quarterfinal games. These cities will be in participating nations other then Newmanistan, so do propose a place in your country.

As this is not a tournament that requires a bunch of participants, the sign up period will run through 12:01 AM Eastern US time on Sunday the 8th with the first round being scorinated on Friday the 13th. The bracket will be released later in the day on Sunday.

All scores and RP will be posted in a thread that will be created on Sunday, but for you bracketologists who want to see a bracket, something that looks like this will be created for the tournament:

http://www.bracketmaker.com/tmenu.cfm?tid=311771

That link is for a Newmanistanian national championship which I will be scorinating over the next week to get practice with the IBC scorinator (the actual dates and times I put there are mainly for “fluff”). And if you register on that site, there’s a prediction function, and we can see who makes the best picks, and all the scoring will be done automatically. Perfect for our own bracketology!
Sarzonia
03-03-2009, 17:15
Sarzonia wishes to sign up for the NSCAA Tournament.

The proposed host locations are The Palestra (http://www.it.umd.edu/VR/Comcast/Images/don-aerial.jpg) in Woodstock, capacity 18,700.

The Hangar (http://www.unc.edu/~wrobel/uncPhotos/SmithCenter.jpg) in Nicksia, Benatar, capacity 22,550.

and The Dockyard (http://dougloudenback.com/hornets/Phoenix.AmericaWest2.jpg) in Portland, Somerset, capacity 16,320.

The teams are as follows:

Joe Gibbs University Redskins (28-4; won the Southern Conference title and earned a No. 1 overall seed in the National University Athletic Association tournament)

Woodstock City College Warlocks (22-10; won NUAA championship 92-87 in double overtime over the Redskins despite being the No. 11 seed.)

Somerset University Serpents (21-8; won Northern Conference regular season and tournament championships but lost in the second round to Woodstock).

Propose anywhere between 6 and 8 schools.

That many?

Teams:

University of Petrol Harbor Oilers (26-7) - Winners of the Southwestern Conference.

Pine Forest State Ironmen (20-10) - It was a down year in the Northwestern Conference, but Pine Forest State rode a late season wave to the top of the standings, they're definitely a team peaking at the right time.

Simona Baptist Conquerors (29-1) - Dominant in the lesser Interfaith Conference, their one loss was to Seclusion Coast St. in the finals of the Governor's Invitational.

Univ. of Resurgens - Granite Harbor Golems (16-12) - The recipient of the Northeast Conference title, they look to finish a streaky season strong by knocking off a more experienced team.

Orient Coast College Tsunami (16-15) - The Small College Champions, Orient Coast spent the first half of the year getting beat up big big-name schools before feasting on their weaker opponents to get a chance at the major tournament.

University of Calcasieu Voyageurs (17-11) - Winning the Southeastern Conference by simply outlasting all of the evenly matched teams, the Voyageurs seek to take their gritty style to the big dance.

Seclusion Coast State Sharks (25-8) - Seclusion Coast won the Northeast Conference easily, but an injury to their star player Caleb Gold led to them losing their conference tournament.

Arenas:
Bartow Arena, Northland, P.F. (http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3110/3178534700_6049fc9aff.jpg) (8,508)

Tocrowkia
03-03-2009, 20:50
Teams:

University of Ancheron: (25-8) One of the most prestigious institutions of higher learning in the Tocrowkian Reich has also produced one of the most devastating and dominating basketball programs. Fresh off a three-peat of Northern conference championships.

University of Pharamas: (24-9) Fresh off a central conference championship, their first in 14 years, and packing a roster chalk-full of talented freshman the U of the P look to be a force to reckoned with for years to come.

University of Northern Viridity: (25-8) Only really a factor in the last two years, Viridity shocked the college world when it one the Big 6 conference last year. Though effective, most of it's players are either seniors and juniors and longevity is a concern.

Ancheron Metro University: (22-11)
Though they just narrowly missed their first conference championship in three years, losing in overtime to their rivals the U of A, they still are a factor in the northern conference.

(OOC: And on that note, does anybody have a basketball scorinator that I could use?)

(OOC: Newmanistan or I could send you the IBC one, although running a league through it will be painful without some sort of wrapper script, since you have to enter each game manually. I could try to bang out some NSFS-ish improvements this week although I wouldn't bank on that, since Saturday I leave for a weeklong vacation.)

Fujisawan Territories
04-03-2009, 01:04
We are submitting three of the top men's and women's teams.

MEN’S
University of Hoji (men’s) (24-8)
Widely considered one of the top three men’s teams in the Fujisawan Territories, UH had a bit of an off year, losing a handful of close games to lesser teams. Consistency issues as of late have tended to plague the Kings, and high pressure situations can get out of control at times. Like the women’s team, the Kings are the defending national champions.

Lesser Antilles University at Hoji (23-7)
LAU-Hoji’s upset win over UH early on was the defining moment for the Warhawks this year. They used the win as motivation throughout the season. Can be considered a team on the rise, but time will tell if their upset over UH was legitimate or just a fluke.

Midland Interisland University (21-11)
The largest neighbor island university is home to a rather average team that has enjoyed a couple above average (by their standards) seasons. The men’s basketball team is something of a campus highlight however, seeing as the women’s team is completely dreadful, and MIU’s football (gridiron) team hasn’t been a contender since the mid 1970's.

WOMEN’S
University of Hoji (women’s) (28-4)
The biggest university in the Fujisawan Territories is well known as a powerhouse in women’s athletics, having produced national titles in every sport, and even Olympic gold medalists like Jozenna Nai. In women’s basketball, the Queens are defending national champions.

University of Iwosaka (22-7)
University of Hoji’s main rival, UI is notorious for their slow starts, and their record is not entirely indicative of just how poorly they have played (and are capable of playing) in recent years, despite being one of the better women’s teams. The Tsunami have a tendency to choke in big games.

Hoji Women's Technical and Aeronautical University (HWTA) (19-10)
For an all-women’s university that is mostly academic minded and usually a perennial pushover when it comes to athletics, the ladies at HWTA put up a decent season. Certainly not UH caliber, but a string of upsets propelled the Eagles through their season.

That many?

Yes, we got 64 slots to fill, and am anticipating about 12 participants which will probably mean 3 automatic bids for unranked IBC teams, 4 for ranked teams, and 5 for well ranked teams, plus at-large bids. 6-8 schools proposed gives us something to choose from, especially from a nation like yours which is well ranked.

Newmanistan's teams will be proposed after I complete that Newmanistanian bracket I linked to which I be running this week.

Sarzonia, you should propose a few more schools.

Um what about the 16-17 play in, arent we doing that???

Ah yes, the 16-17 play-in, a recent phenomenon. We can do without it. (Adding it would make things more complicated in my drawing up the bracket like what I linked to in the first post, because then I have to use the 65-128 team template and set up a bye for every other bracket that the 16-17 play in was not in. Unnecessary bit of work especially considering the play in is only about five or so years old in the real world. But if you all insist, I can add it).
Secristan
04-03-2009, 10:58
Amherst Law School (28-2)
Ranked #1 in the nation before they were upset in the second round of the national tournament.

Lakeland University (27-3)
Winners of the national championship.

Amherst School of Finance (24-8)
After 2-5 start, got hot at end and made the final four.

Key South University (22-10)
Flashy team, would be good for ratings.

Jamison College (22-8)
Team that upset Amherst Law School in the second round. Plays to the level of their opponent.

Bridgefield University (26-4)
Record is deceiving as they played in a weak conference. But once in the tournament, they made it all the way to the Elite Eight.

Waterford College (23-6)
One of those schools that plays well during the season but can’t get over the hump in the tournament.

Naval Academy of Secristan (24-7)
Has a loyal following but the team runs a very basic offense.

Proposed Host Arena: Lakeland Court; Capacity 19,363; facility is only three years old.

Blech. No play-in game. I don't even consider that part of the tournament.
Cassadaigua
04-03-2009, 15:16
Cassadaigua proposes the following schools, all are predominantly female teams except the one that obviously is not.

University of Concord Heights (28-3): The national champion two years in a row now.

Tanner University (26-6): Runner up to UCH this year. Up-and-coming program.

St. Margaret’s College (27-4): Prestigious mid-major; plays a soft schedule until tournament time. Would love the opportunity to play against the world.

Concord Heights Beauty School (25-6): The name of the school might make you think otherwise but they are serious athletes who happen to look good doing it.

Rutland School for Men (23-7): The guys have done a good job holding their own year in, year out against the rest of the country.

Grande Mountain College (24-7): Consistently one of the best teams in the country. Won a championship four seasons ago.

We also propose the following home arenas:

Concord Heights Recreation Center, Concord Heights (Capacity: 17,277. 22 years old but still looks brand new)

Burton University Fieldhouse, Berkshire City (Capacity 15,223. Nice facility, beautiful campus. University’s population makes up 70% of the city’s population.)
Dancougar
05-03-2009, 00:47
Dancougar, the original home of the madness, is keen to expand its international basketball participation so that it may one day reach the point where it can compete in the tournament it founded. And the way to start is with the college kids; they fought through the season for the right to hear their name on Selection Sunday. Here's the shortlist:

Dancougar Royal Academy
Conference: 12-2
Overall: 21-5
Tournament: Elite Eight
Notes: Shared the conference title with Kishin Academy and split the regular season series with them. Not many impressive non-conference wins; bad non-conference loss to Hornbostel.

Shiratori University
Conference: 13-3
Overall: 20-8
Tournament: Final Four
Notes: Outright winners of the South Central played a difficult non-conference schedule but barely broke even.

University of Lunarossa
Conference: 15-5
Overall: 24-6
Tournament: Final Four
Notes: Absurdly easy non-conference schedule except for a tough loss against Konoha Academy in the Lunarossa-Big East challenge. Finished in a tight pack atop the Lunarossa league and then turned it on during the tournament.

Konoha Academy
Conference: 15-5
Overall: 20-5
Tournament: Elite Eight
Notes: Short non-conference schedule to warm them up for the Big East, there they got caught in a dogfight. Only two wins against the other teams in the Big East top five.

Kildare Maritime Academy
Conference: 16-2
Overall: 24-4
Tournament: Losing Finalist
Notes: One of the best teams on the east coast ran all the way to the semifinals after closing the regular season with an eleven-game winning streak. Bad non-conference loss against Zane Island.

Kishin Academy
Conference: 12-2
Overall: 22-5
Tournament: Champion
Notes: Only real conference competition was the Royal Academy, and they split the series. Slightly tougher non-conference schedule than the Royals. Their title run saw them shoot over 55% in each game of the tournament.

Akatsuki University
Conference: 12-4
Overall: 21-6
Tournament: Elite Eight
Notes: Good team out of an average conference that turned it on at tournament time. Last-second losses to Misamaru and Angel Grove hurt their conference record.

In terms of arenas, Dancougar will offer the twin cities of the east for regional games. Port Royal and Eastport are located on the east coast on opposite sides of the Kishin River delta, and despite being located in different states, they share a common public transportation agency, META, ensuring that fans can easily move back and forth.

Leonard Sweetwater Arena
Capacity: 17,500
Location: Port Royal
Description: Located at the waterfront of this eastern port city, the arena, named after the man who brought basketball to Port Royal University, is within walking distance of many of the city's prime nightlife destinations. The Sweetwater is the more modern of the two arenas...

http://www.worldstadiums.com/stadium_pictures/asia/taiwan/taipei_arena1.jpg
City of Eastport Athletic Center
Capacity: 17,000
Location: Eastport
Description: The City of Eastport Athletic Center does not share the stunning ocean view of its cross-delta brother, though, and is located farther inland near the city center. The arena district has been under development for some time and now offers more to visiting fans before and after games.

National champions. 'Nuff said.

http://www.prism.gatech.edu/~gth681k/ns/vephrall/CSA/Isthmian/Bektys State.png Bektys State University Bulldogs (27-8) (Isthmian Conference)
Joint-second in both the Isthmian Conference and the overall national standings, and lost a close tournament semifinal to Sirinis Ag, 67-64.

The only team outside the Isthmian to finish with less than ten losses in the regular season. Honestly, pretty much the only thing preventing this from being an all-Isthmian affair was the CSA's insistence that they would nominate no more than two schools from any conference.

I'll be honest, there's not that much to say about them. Indeed, there's not that much to say about anyone, what with there being no history or previous points of comparison for anyone.

Finished as national runners-up after pulling off upsets of Isthmian Conference teams Riestre-Clyddly (70-59) and Bektys State (67-64), the tournament's third and second seeds, respectively. #6 Sirinis Ag eventually lost to #1 South Bektys in the final, 60-53.

Lost to Salle in the first round of the playoffs. See what I said about them.

There are 19 hours and 13 minutes after the time of this post to get your schools in should you be interested in participating. The tournament will take some time to set up and something I must do on Sunday.

(Note: Schools that say "Empire" after a city are what you know as "State" type schools in the real world).

The Newmanistan list is: (First record is Post-NEWCAA tournament, second in ( ) is the pre-NEWCAA tournament)

Dover City Univ (35-2, 29-2)- Winners of the national championship after being ranked #2 for most of the season.

Univ of Southport (34-2, 29-1)- Lost in the final, ranked #1 much of the year.

Concord City Univ. (29-3, 28-2)- Concerns that their schedule was too easy may have been confirmed when they were ousted in the second round of the tournament.

Putnam Lake Univ. (32-3, 28-2)- Stunned in the quarterfinal, but only team to beat Southport during the regular season.

Loudon Empire (27-4, 26-3)- Disappointing second round loss after strong season.

Fairfield City Univ. (31-4, 27-3)- Smaller school presently doing a great job swimming with the big fish.

University of South Charlotte (28-7, 24-6)- Plays in a tough conference, then used a disappointing seed as motivation to find their way all the way to the final four.

Pocono City Tech (30-4, 27-3)- The best of the Pocono City area schools. Lost in the regional final.

There will be no additional host city bids from us.
