NSCAA Tournament - Discussion Thread.

Felt this should head to its own thread now.

It’s March, which means it’s NCAA tournament time.

Well, a group of us were tossing around the idea of having our owns “NSCAA” tournament, if you will. We want to see if there is enough interest to make this a reality.

We are still ironing out the specifics, but the general idea is that each country would be assigned a certain amount of colleges to be welcomed into the tournament based on their IBC rankings (the exact number of schools per person will be determined by the number of participants). Let’s say you’re nation was allowed three schools, you would probably want to submit six or so schools, because in addition to the specified number of schools per country, we will also hand out “at large bids”. With each school, you’d want to include a record and maybe a sentence or two about them to impress the selection committee (the host of the tournament) who will select your schools and seed them accordingly. Biases would be given to schools from “power conferences” or in other words, nations with high IBC rankings in determining the seedings. (i.e. a 28-1 team from a high ranked nation would receive a better seed then a 28-1 team from an unranked nation. This doesn't mean they'd be more likely to win, just that they'd have the better seed).

The games would be scorinated using the IBC (International Basketball Championships) scorinator.

A host has not officially been determined, but I would be willing to host it and scorinate on Fridays-Sundays. Other people willing to host are most certainly welcome to express that interest.

So for now, this is a thread to see what kind of interest there is in this. An official signup thread would occur if enough interest is generated.

Eh, why not? Our college athletes will probably choke too, but what the hell.

+1. Will also take this as motivation to improve the scorinator.

Like i said in the IBC thread that was my main reason in bringing this legue thread up to have college because it is way more interesting. Its more exciting when 65 teams fight it out.and also i would like to put forward the NCAA prediction idea of seeing who can predict the most and stuff.

While basketball enjoys marginal popularity at best in Vephrall, it's true that we do love our college sports. So it certainly wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility.

In like Flint.

I'd like to add a "notion" of the FINAL FOUR to be hosted by the main nation hosting the overall tourney, but have the regionals "Hosted" by other nations.

For example:
Final Four: Championship City, Nation X (Nation X is scorinating the tourney)
Regional Alpha: Alpha City, Alphanation
Regional Beta: Beta City, Beta Island
Regional Gamma: Gamma City, Gammaland
Regional Delta: Deltaville, Delta Islands

With the provisio that if possible, one nation's team be placed in a region they are "hosting".

If this notion is acceptable, Qazox would like to nominate the SaxerDome, SaxerVilla, Qazox (Capacity for basketball: 55,000) for a regional hosting.

Because thats a um good idea that we could develop, but first i would suggest seeing if we could od this while we at it and not ge toff track

I tried that once about 2 years ago... only 2 nations signed up for it.

But who knows, i maybe was ahead of my time.

Perhaps. I'd sign up for such a tournament this time.

As Sarzonia, of course. Wouldn't want a bunch of collegians flying through space, now would we? :tongue:

Stop reading my mind, this is exactly what I was planning on doing!:wink:

As far as the college football, let's see how this pans out. A couple years ago was pre-Dancougar, pre-Newmanistan, pre-Arroza, pre-Rennidan, etc. :D

I'm going to make a serious effort to get something release-worthy together by the end of the week. It's not going to be as awesome as NSFS, but I'm trying to wrap the simulation algorithm with a useful subset of its features, namely the ability to define a bunch of teams and games and have it shoot out some scores and tables.

Don't feel obligated, you've put together a nice program and this NSCAA tournament since it will be all about the RP won't really mean the programs lack of really considering rank well will matter. Once the first round is over, there's not really going to be a ton of games.

I'm planning to implement something similar to the points ranking used in NSFS and have future tournaments just add the RP score into that number. And while the program as-is will work in a tournament since there's a limited number of games, it eventually needs to get fleshed out if people want to use it for leagues and such. And I want future IBCs to be more automated anyway.

What it comes down to is that I'm using the interest this has generated as a motivating factor to get something out that everyone can use without too much effort.

Yay, quick development in Python. There's probably still some bugs lurking, but I was able to run a season with it. So you can grab version 0 of the simulator here:

http://sites.google.com/site/nsdancougarfoo/files/basketsim.zip (http://sites.google.com/site/nsdancougarfoo/files/basketsim.zip)

Current features:
* NSFS-like XML input format
* Team strengths on arbitrary scales
* Simulate all games manually scheduled
* League standings broken down into groups
* NBA rule set

Not implemented:
* Automatic scheduling, in any form
* Style modifiers
* Tournament scorination
* NCAA rule set
* Partial simulation with resume files
* And probably lots of other stuff

If nothing else, this should make scorinating the upcoming NSCAA tournament less tedius. As it is implemented in Python, you do need to go to python.org and grab that.

Hey Arroza,

I *loved* that piece about Sarzonian Fried Chicken and the whole bit about the series on the food at The Palestra!

In case anyone's wondering, I'm drawing some inspiration about my RPing of the scenes in The Palestra from my experiences covering NCAA Tournament games at the Comcast Center in College Park, Md. (last year for the women's tournament). Including the bit about the reporter from the small weekly getting the best seat in the house.

Thoughts on the recently completed NSCAA Tournament from the hosts perspective.

Pros:

-- Scorination went smoothly. The basketsim program written by Dancougar works very well. Kudos to him for the work he put into it, especially the "last minute" additions. The first round was time consuming, which is why I did it in phases, but after that, it was nothing out of the ordinary. Upsets occurred, which is what you want, and games between nations with similar RP bonuses tended to go either way, which is also good.

-- The prediction feature on the bracketmaker site made things very efficient there, and created an additional element of entertainment.

-- Seemed like enough quality to do again at some point.

Cons:

-- RP was limited. This problem was a product, I think, of a couple woulda-been active RPers being shutout after one or two days. Makes me wonder that if we do this again, we should have preliminary games ("conference tournaments"), to create more games, and more drama, and ultimately more opportunities for RP.

-- Seemed to go too fast. If not for the weekdays which I had be off days, it would have started and finished in a week. Another argument, I believe, for "conference tournaments."

For my part, the thing started while I was on spring break, so I wasn't able/willing to come up with rosters or anything to start a tournament from scratch, whereas the World Cup was already ongoing and I could at least look my guys up whlie I was away. Otherwise I certainly would have participated more than my one "oh hey, I'm actually in this" post.

My thought is that this thing is more like the TQCC/GC/SBCC that happens in the Domestic Football thread, where it's something people comment on but not really on a match by match basis, but rather it's built into their league post. You could still have an RP component based on how teams choose to report their league and tournament progress, it would just be based on quality as opposed to quality plus frequency.

In my case, I think it was primarily the whole "oh #%^& it's the week before spring break and EVERYTHING is due" thing. Generally when I'm pulling all-nighters to complete(-ish) assignments, I don't have much RPing time. :p

And then spring break itself would've been an issue, but all my teams were already knocked out by then anyway. :D
