The Shambles

In June 2008, the millions of voters across the Shambles went to the polls to elect a new national Senate, and members of councils across each of the 8 districts.
The independent Electoral Commission said the elections had run smoothly, with some questions about the security of electronic voting machines. There was no reported violence at polling stations across the country, or serious delays at the hundreds of counting places.
The Social Democrats suffered a net loss of 24 seats, including formerly safe constituencies on Main Island. The opposition conservative Peoples Voice gained 14 seats, still many short of the 312 won by the SD, who have ruled the Shambles since independence in 2000.
In district elections across the country, SD candidates did badly in some regions although the northeastern stronghold of Ygli Tent saw an increase of some 8 councillors for a majority of 6 over Peoples Voice.
