Myedvedeya, with the full support and spiritual guidance of the church-fathers of the Archregimancy, announces it's intention to bid for the hosting rights of Baptism of Fire 31.

Basic OOC Details:

Scorination:
Scorination will be conducted using NSFootySim. The default settings will be used.

RP:
Roleplay, based on the matches, or completely unrelated, will give each team a bonus. This bonus will increase their chances of winning matches. RPs will be graded on a scale of 1-5 based on quality. The best RP posted by a competitor on any given matchday will be the only one graded. This is to prevent "spamming", the process of posting huge numbers of RPs, in the hope of bettering one's chances of winning matches.

Style Modifiers:
Nations may select a style modifier between +2 and -2 for use during the tournament, with +2 being the most attacking-oriented style, and -2 the most defensively oriented. Teams who do not state a preference will be given a neutral style modifier of 0.

Previous Experience:
Myedvedeya hosted Nationstates' first fencing tournament, the Coupe du Monde d'Escrime.

The Archregimancy has hosted many major footballing tournaments, most recently the 34th World Cup, as the Holy Empire.

Dates:
The dates will be determined as World Cup 44 signups draw to a close. The tournament will probably occur in early December. Scorination will tend to be between the hours of 8:00 and 10:00 PM, US Eastern Time.

Format:

7-9 teams: 1 group, all teams face each other once, top four are seeded for a playoff bracket, to determine the champion.

10-16 teams: 2 groups, each team faces each other team once. The top four in each group are seeded for an 8-team playoff bracket. In case of an odd number of teams, matches against the last-placed team in the larger group do not count towards seeding.

17-21 teams: 3 groups, each team faces each other team once. The top two teams in each group, and the two best third-placed teams advance to an 8-team seeded playoff.

22+ teams: 4 groups, each team faces each other team once. The top four from each group are seeded for a 16-team playoff bracket.

Brief Details:
Myedvedeya is a modern monarchy, ruled over by a Tsar. Myedvedeya is generally a centrist nation, with a great degree of personal and economic freedom, and slightly less political freedom. Much like modern-day Russia, the "democratic" aspect of Myedvedeya's politics is somewhat of a sham. The Tsar and the Church control the nation almost entirely, and the people seem to be quite satisfied with this arrangement.

The state religion of Myedvedeya is Russian Orthodox Christianity, and the state language is Russian. Due to a very good public education system, however, most Myedvedeyans are multilingual, so foreigners should have no trouble communicating with the locals. Myedvedeyans are fiercely nationalist, and do not take kindly to insults about the nation or its' customs. Myedvedeyans are very nocturnal, especially in larger cities. The nightlife is thriving, and people keep strange hours. Most Myedvedeyans go to sleep at around 2-3 AM, and wake up at around 10 AM. Businesses are often closed earlier than this in the morning.

Another aspect of Myedvedeyan culture that many may find intriguing are the bears. Myedvedeyan bears are sentient, long-living and intelligent beings. They tend to find the human citizens of the nation quaint and unimportant, and are extremely philosophically and religiously focused. Many of Myedvedeya's great theologians and church fathers are bears, and, as such, bears hold a great deal of control over Myedvedeyan governing policies. The closest parallel that can be drawn to Myedvedeyan bearish society is to that of Tolkien's elves, but extremely devoutly religious.

Football in Myedvedeya:

Myedvedeya's football can be classified as developing. The domestic league currently consists of two divisions, and is looking to expand to a third. Myedvedeya's league sends teams to all major international competitions, and has produced many players who have traveled overseas to great leagues such as Cafundéu's. Myedvedeya's collegiate league is quite well developed, and, with 40 teams, is one of the world's larger collegiate football programs. Myedvedeyan champions Moskva State Athlete's Academy will be traveling to the world's premier collegiate international tournament later this year.

Myedvedeya's national squad can also be classified as developing. Currently ranked 55th in the world after their first attempt at World Cup Qualifying, the Myedvedeyan squad have risen dramatically through the ranks since winning the most recent Baptism of Fire. Many Myedvedeyan internationals play for strong squads overseas, including recent Cafundelense champion Ranca Toco.

Stadiums to be Used:

Since the Dreamed Realm which contains the Archregimancy and the Holy Empire is extremely difficult to access, the physical manifestation of this tournament will take place entirely in Myedvedeya, with the spiritual support of the Archregimancy.

Myedvedeya has produced eight stadiums for use in the Baptism of Fire.

Fr. Polycarp the Venerable, First Hierarch of the World Cup Committee, together with the Monastic Football Association, the Holy Synod the the Archregimancy, and the Orthodox Church of the Holy Empire heartily endorse the Baptism of Fire bid details as listed by our Orthodox brothers in the Unified Tsardom of Myedvedeya.

While the tournament will be physically taking place in Myedvedeya, the First Hierarch and the MFA are formal co-hosts for this bid.

In practice, this means that the Archregimancy will be offering spiritual support throughout the tournament, co-hosting the opening ceremony Divine Liturgy with the Orthodox authorities of Myedvedeya, blessing each ground prior to every match, and holding a liturgy in a church adjacent to the ground during every match.

The Archregimancy has even released an official Baptism of Fire 31 postcard, featuring icons of the Theotokos, Christ, John the Forerunner, and exterior and interior views of the church to be built just outside Krakovsky Stadion, Moskva.

OOC:

In practice, my role will be mainly a supporting one. I'll set up the BoF thread and arrange the group draw (the precise nature of which will depend on the number of sign-ups), and otherwise leave the running of the show to Myedvedeya to allow him to gain hosting experience in a WCC-sanctioned event. Myedvedeya will do all of the scorination unless RL intervenes, in which case I'm available to step in if there's a scorination emergency. Otherwise, I'll only be offering advice, combined with the occasional RP.

I fulfilled a similar role for Sel Appa a few BoFs ago, though Myedvedeya is in less need of a calming influence than Sel was, and I have a more foregrounded RP role in this bid as an official co-host as Myed is one of the few nations that's IC compatible with the Archregimancy.

My nation's presence also allows for additional roleplaying colour; nations are naturally free to engage with - or ignore - the Orthodox element any way they see fit.

I hope I've also demonstrated over the years that anti-Orthodox RP never causes offence so long as it's in the right spirit - though you have to expect to be able to take if you're going to dish it out!
