World Cup 44 Introduction:

For more information on the World Cup, its History, how it works, who runs it, and the competitions related to it, check out the World Cup Wiki Site (http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=World_Cup).

The NSWC is a tournament for any NS nation who signs up. This World Cup is about to start its 44th competition, and your nation can take part! Every team is given a rank based on their performances in previous Cups, and the starting rank is roughly 200 (the current "best team in the world" is Valanora, with a rank of 1) See: KPB Rankings (http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=KPB_ranking_system)

Scores are generated using either a Java program or through various or MS Excel sheet 'scorinators' which use random numbers, weighted by ranking and RP bonus to produce the scores.

It is encouraged for Nations to RP - roleplay - their matches, team rosters, players and such. Good RPs will help raise your chance of winning (especially in the Baptism of Fire). Please note: A lot of RPs does not guarantee goals or wins, but your chances are improved of this happening. i.e. Two debutant, non-ranked, nations play each other. One has RP'd a few times, the other has not. The nation who has participated should have the better probability of victory, but still has a chance of a Win, Loss or Draw.

RPs can be Team Roster announcements, fan comments, press conferences, media stories, anything about the game, as long as you've kept to the score as posted or TGd to you by the host/scorer.

For any other questions you may have, please see the World Cup FAQs article on NSwiki. (http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=World_Cup_FAQs) - Courtesy of Starblaydia

The longest-running sports competition in NationStates reaches its forty-fourth tournament: the Football (Soccer) World Cup. Please do specify if you have not participated before.

If your nation is new to the World Cup, or if you have no KPB points, you may be able to take part in the preliminary Baptism of Fire Cup (http://nswiki.net/index.php?title=Baptism_of_Fire) competition.
If this is your first Cup, please indicate whether you wish to be registered for the Baptism of Fire or not.

Puppets have to post with their nation and identify their master. Only one Puppet per Master nation is permitted, and you may only enter a puppet once you have already competed in a World Cup

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE WC44 HOSTS HAVE DECLARED THAT SIGN-UPS FOR THIS WORLD CUP ARE NOW CLOSED
Keep an eye out for the sign-up thread for World Cup 45 - coming soon(ish)!

You-know-who sign up (or if you don’t, Capitalizt SLANI and Jasīʼyūn sign up)!

Corrected for the benefit of simple WCC presidents who were in the process of asking CH to clarify which of his nations were signing up, only to discover after hitting the quote button that the relevant bit was in white text.

Monastic WCC presidents aren't good with technology, see.

The rules have changed since you were a top-10 all-conquering powerhouse - and yes, you're eligible for the BoF at the discretion of the hosts (though it would be unusual for past participants in your situation to be turned away).

Wrong. You can only enter the BoF if you haven't been in one before, simple as that. The point about KPB points only matters for teams that dropped out and came back, but never had a BoF on their first round.

Sarzonia was in BoF for WC16 and is thus ineligible for the BoF this time.

Just acknowledging that, as Liv points out, I have apparently made a mistake on this one. I'd missed Sarzonia's previous BoF entry.

I don't have enough time right now to make the correction, but will try and get around to doing so in the next couple of days - though, as explained on the Discussion thread, I have some RL issues that loom large over the next couple of days.

Official Baptism of Fire Announcement!

Your friendly neighborhood host here, announcing the timetable for the upcoming Baptism of Fire.

While there is currently no sign-up deadline set for the World Cup proper, the cutoff for Baptism of Fire entries will be Thursday, December 3 at midnight Eastern time (0500 GMT). You can expect the RP/Roster/Scores thread to pop up around that time. Then everyone will have a chance to get in their preliminary roleplays before the tournament starts on Monday, December 7.

Teams which have already participated in a Baptism of Fire are ineligible. However, if you played in a previous World Cup but not its associated Baptism of Fire, and you have 0 KPB points, you will be permitted to compete.

As stated in the bid thread, the number of teams will determine the layout. Plan on having one group stage game every day starting on the 7th, followed by a day off, followed by playoffs. Adjustments to this will be posted in the Baptism of Fire thread when it appears.

Feel free to TG me with any questions.

At present there are 72 teams. That (bearing in mind co-hosts qualify automatically) would allow a qualifying stage of ten groups of seven teams. (Teams on bye weeks would be able to arrange friendlies with each other and the hosts.)

Other possibilities through increased signup numbers are as follows:

74 - twelve groups of six
77 - fifteen groups of five (not a preferred option)
82 - ten groups of eight
86 - twelve groups of seven
92 - fifteen groups of six or ten groups of nine
98 - twelve groups of eight (and pigs will fly)

In the case of a ten-group affair, the top three in each group qualify automatically. In fifteen-group qualification procedure it is the top two who qualify, while with twelve groups the top two go through and the third-placed teams compete in home-and-away playoffs with the winners qualifying.

It is these numbers above that are critical. If we are slightly above them, the latest signups may miss out. If we are just short of them, we may start offering incentives to regional separatist groups around the multiverse to create new fully-fledged nationstates who can create their own national teams...

It was merely the case that we had a workable number, and at this point I felt it prudent to reveal other workable numbers and the formats from them.

Thanks for that. If there are no more signups we can start the competition with twelve groups of six and no Dariusville. But there will be more signups. The next critical number is 82, seven signups away, which would allow for a 10x8 qualification phase.

This would necessitate six more signups, or seven to replace the current provisional signup Dariusville.

Have the hosts noted Kjomasasopia's withdrawal?

Yes indeed. With Benelsdon, Senatus Populusque II and, regrettably, Daehanjeiguk all ceased, we’re currently on seventy-three sign-ups (excluding the hosts and including Dariusville and O Ale Ale). That’s also assuming Kereca doesn’t cease in the next couple of days, as well.

Since there’s still five days before New Years, there’s no harm keeping it open and attempting to get to the magic eighty, though there are less friendly options in the mid-seventies, if it comes to it.

We might also try door-knocking. “Excuse me, madam, but can I borrow a moment of your time to ask whether you have allowed puppets to enter your life?”

[One extensive edit later...]

On a general note, I'll point out that we're on 75 nations with Kereca ceased (Veph is theoretically missing too, but surely that won't last...). We're still aiming for eighty over the next couple of days, and that includes ceased nations returning from the dead, and still welcome puppets, but we'll certainly chop the most recent puppet sign-ups and go with a smaller (and slightly more awkward) number if needs be. Innit.

Updated Through Alex Ruined Hallelujah

[entirely agree, btw - my favourite version, other than Len's original, remains the 1991 John Cale cover]

Here's a quick update on how I'm arranging some points of sign-up contention...

Midlauthia has not been signed up yet, but may sign up by stating their intent to participate in the WC proper.

I'm not removing 'cease to exist' nations from the sign-up list as some of these nations may return before the Cup starts; this is especially true given that this is a time of year when people may be away from computers for extend periods.

Likewise, I haven't removed Kjo from the sign-up list in case his withdrawal is IC RP. Deep South Sopia has not been withdrawn.

This obviously means that the number of nations signed up remains somewhat malleable; the hosts' decision on which nations to include in the WC draw is final, and for all of the above reasons may not precisely match those nations listed in the first post of this thread.

Any questions?

In the meantime, sign-ups are still open!

Nothing like a bit of humility eh

Unfortunately, the BoF finished before Christmas, but there's nothing to stop you signing up for World Cup qualifying anyway. Not having a BoF reduces your chances of qualifying (or performing in the Cup of Harmony for non-qualifying nations instead) somewhat, but there are notable recent examples of nations that have joined the elite in a relatively short space of time without having had a BoF campaign (or performing dreadfully at one).

EDIT: Apologies for any egg-suckery-based teaching above, btw, since I've just noticed you've already hosted two tournaments in Haven using NSFS, so've probably been lurking here for a bit anyway ;)

Alright, I suppose I should have searched for the BoF thread but I didn't see it on the forum page so I assumed it hadn't been started yet, I'll sit out this cup and jump in for 45 (I'd rather have some sort of ranking points to back me up coming in). Thanks anyway though

Again, I reiterate that I'm not removing 'cease to exist' nations from the OP given the possibility that they may become active again prior to the group draw. The final decision on whom should be included rests solely with the hosts, not me.

Similarly, I have not withdrawn Kjo as he's posted a roster, and his withdrawal post was ambiguous as to whether it was IC or OOC; the final decision on Kjo's inclusion likewise rests with the hosts.

And even now I'll keep Kjo on the first list, with a final decision on his participation to be made by the hosts - not because I'm unusually stubborn or forgiving, but because he withdrew from WC43 too, only to change his mind before the group draw. I'll give him that chance here, too.

As mentioned earlier, the BoF for this World Cup has been and gone. You're still welcome to sign up for World Cup qualifying, and the negative effects on your rankings points through not having had a BoF campaign shouldn't be too noticeable if you RP consistently, but as with Midlauthia you may wish to sit this one out anyway and wait for the WC45 sign-up thread to get in the next BoF nice and early. It's your call.

Regardless of whether Edward City is in or out, we've reached the eighty mark and, therefore...

WORLD CUP 44 SIGN-UPS ARE CLOSED.

The qualifying draw, and RP thread proper, and whatnot, can be expected sometime in the evening UTC of New Year's Day. And almost certainly on #nssport, depending on Stuff.

The remaining ceased nations - and for the purposes of WC44 sign-ups, that includes Kjomasasopia - will be included at the expense of the if-needed puppets, should they return before 1700 UTC, Jan 1st.
