A repost from last year...

12:20am 9 November 2007 (election night),
Demetriopolis Football Stadium

The official coalition after-party was a jubilant affair by the time the news coverage joined it to see the official acceptance speech. The excited crowd was gathered around a stage with a huge "THIBAULT DRAPEUR: Le Leadership Authentique" billboard, flanked by a sign bearing the Pantocratorian Socialist Alliance's logo on one side, and the Constantinople Party's logo on the other. In the middle of the stage was a podium with the "Authentic Leadership" slogan produced in both French and Greek on it, behind which the Deputy Chancellor and Leader of the Constantinople Party was standing with a broad smile on his face. The Constantinople Party supporters gathered nearer the stage were chanting "Spiro! Spiro! Spiro!" at the Deputy Chancellor.

"Ladies and gentlemen," Spiro Bolkus began in Greek. "To all of you here tonight, all of our supporters around the nation watching on the television, and to all the people of our fatherland, Greek speakers and French speakers, it gives me very great pleasure to introduce to you the first RE-ELECTED Imperial Chancellor in twenty-seven years, a great man, a great friend, and a great leader, Doctor Thibault Drapeur!"

The huge crowd gathered at the stadium roared its approval as the Socialist campaign song ("A la volonté du peuple" from the French version of Les Misérables the musical) began to play through the PA system, heralding the entrance of the Imperial Chancellor. Thibault Drapeur emerged from behind the "Authentic Leadership" sign on the stage and waved to the euphoric crowd for a few moments as Spiro Bolkus moved over to the Chancellor. The two men shook hands and posed for photographs before they walked back to the podium, with Drapeur assuming the position behind the microphone. The crowd chanted Drapeur's name over and over again. Drapeur smiled, touched by their enthusiasm as he had been so often in the past three years. The adulation of people who had suffered or been forgotten or oppressed by the governments which had preceded his always made public life worthwhile to Drapeur, even when he felt old and tired and sick of politics. He wiped a tear from his eyes and then addressed the people.

"Nearly an hour ago now Sir Thierry del Moray called me and congratulated all of us on the re-election of the Imperial Government." Drapeur began. "I thanked Sir Thierry and congratulated him on a hard fought campaign, and told him that I looked forward to working with the Opposition on finding real solutions to the problems which face Pantocratoria. My friends, colleagues, and dare I say comrades, that is what this campaign was all about - real leadership. Real leadership is inclusive. It is willing to listen to every point of view, from friend or foe. It is non-ideological in the best sense of the term - it doesn't prejudge advice before it is offered because of party or background. The Government which it has been my privilege to head for the past three years, and which I am very privileged to continue to head into the future after tonight's result, has exercised real leadership. By its very nature, our coalition brings together the interest of groups in our society which until three years ago, might have been thought to lack any common ground whatsoever. But we have found the common ground which binds all of us together - Pantocratoria!"

"Together we have built a new Pantocratoria. It has not been easy, and tonight we are forced to recognise that some Pantocratorians have felt left behind by our reform agenda." Drapeur said. "I am unapologetic about the need for change, but I do sincerely regret that some of our fellow citizens feel alienated by our reforms. Tonight's result is a mandate for us to continue to reform, rebuild and improve Pantocratoria, but it is also a powerful message for us - that some Pantocratorians feel left behind or excluded, and that we must do all we can to make sure that they can find their place in the new Pantocratoria as well. I make this commitment tonight on behalf of our Government - we will reach out to every Pantocratorian, and we won't leave anybody behind."

The crowd cheered and Drapeur moved on to thanking the dozens of people he felt the need to thank for their contribution to the campaign, starting with Spiro Bolkus and moving his way through both the Socialist and Constantinople Party ranks.

PARLIAMENTARY DEBATES

Pantocratoria, Parliamentary Debates, vol. no. 245, Feast of Our Lady of Mercy (24th September) 34 Andreus I Capet (2008), Yellow p. 16

The Hon. Lord Speaker: Questions? The Leader of the Opposition.

Sir Thierry del Moray: Thank you, my Lord Speaker. My question is for the Right Honourable the Imperial Chancellor. Is the Chancellor aware that in the halls of this place, his leadership has become such a joke that the matter of who will succeed him is openly discussed by Socialist members and their staff? (members interjecting) Does the Chancellor recall promising the Pantocratorian people "real leadership" at the last election, and if so, does he contend that he is exercising real leadership now, when his own Government's members openly speculate and scheme about his replacement?

The Hon. Lord Speaker: The Right Honourable the Imperial Chancellor.

Honourable Members: Hear! Hear!

The Rt. Hon. Dr. Thibault Drapeur: Well, thank you my Lord Speaker. My Lord Speaker, as you would be well aware, and as members would recall, when the Government was re-elected last year, we promised the Pantocratorian people real leadership on the issues of the day. Real leadership on the economy, my Lord Speaker, on education, on healthcare... on... Sit down! Sit down!

The Hon. Lord Speaker: The Member for St Apolline will resume his seat! The Imperial Chancellor has the call.

Hon. Jean-Louis Beaufoy: (inaudible interjection)

The Rt. Hon. Dr. Thibault Drapeur: Just because the honourable member stayed up to four o'clock in the morning struggling to pick between two jibbering idiots doesn't mean he's qualified to talk about political leadership, my Lord Speaker! There hasn't been a leader in his party room since Monsieur resigned. (members interjecting) Some choice, my Lord Speaker, in the member's defence, it was a very difficult choice to make... a political neanderthal or a parliamentary infant, my Lord Speaker... (members interjecting) The Leader of the Opposition's dummy, my Lord Speaker, has been spat...

The Hon. Lord Speaker: Order! Order! The house will come to order! Members on my left! Members on my right! The Leader of the Opposition! Order!

Sir Thierry del Moray: The only dummy I can see is across from me!

The Rt. Hon. Dr. Thibault Drapeur: So you're not even observant during those long hours you spend adoring yourself in the mirror each morning!

The Hon. Lord Speaker: Order! The Imperial Chancellor will come to the end of his answer. The Leader of the Opposition will resume his seat.

The Rt. Hon. Dr. Thibault Drapeur: My Lord Speaker, the Leader of the Opposition, the malignant narcissist that he is, wouldn't know what real leadership was. He wouldn't know, my Lord Speaker, because he's a policy-free zone. That was the real leadership I promised to the Pantocratorian electorate, my Lord Speaker, the real leadership the Government is delivering, real leadership on the issues, real leadership on the policies, real leadership that delivers results, my Lord Speaker.

Honourable Members: Hear! Hear!

Press Release - Imperial Commission to Investigate Governmental Corruption

The latest World Assembly reports on governmental corruption in the Western Atlantic reveal endemic corruption in the Pantocratorian Government, the third highest in the region, behind only Aerion and the self-appointed government of the mercenary insurgents occupying parts of eastern Ambara.

This is clearly an unacceptable statistic, of which the Imperial Government ought to be deeply ashamed. Upon the first sitting on the new Parliament, forever delayed by the Imperial Chancellor to make time for his vainglorious diplomatic efforts in Aerion, the United Christian Front opposition began immediate proceedings to initiate an inquiry into governmental corruption in Pantocratoria.

The United Christian Front called upon the Parliament to advise the Emperor to appoint an Imperial Commission of Inquiry to investigate the matter freely and openly, without allegations of bias. The matter is being considered by the Parliament at present. The United Christian Front believes that the Imperial Commission must have terms of reference which permit it a free hand in investigating the shady links between various ministers of the crown and union bosses, indeed, between the entire Pantocratorian Socialist Alliance and trade unions. With a front bench of former union bosses, led by a former union boss in Dr Drapeur, Pantocratorians cannot expect a parliamentary inquiry alone to investigate this matter fully. Only an Imperial Commission will satisfy the public's right to know!

CHANCELLOR TO RETIRE BEFORE EASTER
Folquet and Raoul already sparring over top job

The Imperial Chancellor, Dr Thibault Drapeur, is set to retire before Easter, according to an anonymous member of the Imperial Cabinet.

According to the Cabinet Minister, who spoke exclusively with The Imperial Monitor only on the condition that their identity would be kept secret, Dr Drapeur has told his ministers and senior Socialist MPs that the Government would soon have to do without him, as soon as Easter this year.

The Pantocratorian Socialist Alliance's two most senior ministers, Treasurer Isabelle Folquet and Foreign Minister Demetrios Raoul, have both been campaigning with Socialist backbenchers for months, in an effort to secure their support for a future leadership ballot upon Dr Drapeur's retirement.

That secret campaign for the highest political office in Pantocratoria, which has thus far been fought out in backrooms, union offices, and party meetings, is now sure to spill into the press and public spotlight.

The Imperial Chancellor's Office was unavailable for comment on the matter when approached by The Imperial Monitor this afternoon.

Dr Drapeur was first elected in 2004, and formed a sometimes difficult coalition between his Socialists and the Greek-speaking agrarian conservative Constantinople Party, the first Imperial Chancellor to be elected at the same election at which he was elected into Parliament since Jean Fitzpierre in 1718.
