SCHNAB PAR GRUENBERG!Welcome to Gruenberg!

Everyone's favourite goat-enabled theocracy has returned to the international scene to host the ninth installment - yeah, we're not clear what happened to the second through seventh ones either - of NationStates's least revered competition, the Cricket World Cup. We extend our warmest thanks to all those members of the international sporting community who have agreed to participate, and welcome them to our green, goddessly, and supremely goat-enabled land for what we hope will be an exciting week of competition. We invite participants and interested observers to browse, for example, archives from the first World Cup (http://forums2.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=7337863#post7337863).

The format of the tournament is simple: each team will play each other team in their group. The top two teams from each group will progress to the semi-finals, and the winners thereof to the final. In the event of a tie, net run rate will be used to determine the winner. If there is still no difference between the teams, the team coach composing the best sonnet on the theme of "Goats" will be the victor.

Matches will be standard one-day international format: one innings of 50 overs per side, with each bowler limited to 10 overs. A white ball and coloured kit will be used. Otherwise, the standard laws of cricket will apply. Each side may field a squad of 14 players, though obviously only 11 can start.

Gruenberg is an extremely hot country, even this late in summer, and is currently in its dry season before the monsoons start. As such, pitches are hard and dusty, conducive to attacking batting and spin bowling. Seam attacks will fare less well, though for those able to exploit it there is the opportunity for reverse swing late in the game. 50% of group matches, plus both semi-finals and the final, will be day/night games played under floodlights.

Group matches will be played at local grounds around Gruenberg, most of which have capacities in excess of 100,000. The semi-finals will be played at the Scimitar Stadium, Moroschwegen (capacity 225,000) and the Goatforce Gruenberg stadium, Merlefurt (175,000). The final will be played at The Most Holy and Sultanic Gardens stadium in Flurthwel (128,000). As tickets have sold extremely quickly to the cricket crazy, and in general crazy, native populace, and as the Holy Wenaist Sultanate is forced to retain a tight border security policy, only a limited number of tickets will be available to foreign fans. However, we will make all possible accommodation for visiting dignitaries and team entourages.

Visitors should bear in mind that Gruenberg is a Wenaist nation, and as such flagrant displays of non-Wenaist religious activity are discouraged. The consumption of alcohol is strictly prohibited. Women should be fully clothed when in public, and should refrain from meeting the gaze of men except when being spoken to. The harassment or denigration of goats is a deportable offence. Foreign journalists will be required to work in collaboration with our State Institute for Research and Development, and apply for permits to access the Internet and submit content. They may not make unscheduled trips. Naturally, The Gruenberger Chronicle and The Gruenberger will be covering the World Cup.

The tournament will be sponsored by GruenChem and Capra Cola, and participants will be given free Capra Cola during the competition, though we are obliged to inform you that excessive consumption may, according to so-called medical and scientific opinion, lead to, you know, cancer and death, but more importantly, a great taste of fish. External sponsors are also welcome.

We look forward to the cricket, and will endeavour to do everything possible to be accommodating hosts. Except waver from our unflinching support of religious fanaticism.

OOC: I've been assured there is still interest in this, but that it might be a few days before people are free to RP, so I'll wait a little longer.

OOC: Just a quick question when might this start? I am currently swamped atm, and am just wondering how long I might have till the competition starts up.

OOC: I don't see there's any point starting it until people are ready - C&M suggested that after the CoH finishes things might be more active. I'm in no hurry to get it started, I just posted the intro because I was bored at work and had a rare opportunity to log into this forum account.
