Welcome to FORMULA 60!
We think 900hp racing cars are for pussies ...

Unfortunately, decreasing defense budgets, increasing sports-related budgets as your nation invests in making its national teams competitive in every sport it can think of - even russian roulette - and the introduction of new lightweight armored fighting vehicles that can carry high-power, low-recoil 120mm guns have made the sixty metric ton main battle tank begin to fight for its very existance. We have found a way to reverse this detoriation of common sense by uniting the first two and making the third point obsolete by calling all its proponents 'little girls'. In honor of this sixty ton steel beast ... well, admittedly it should now be considered more of a 'ceramic-steel with bits of other composites best' ... the Second Empire of the Golden Throne [i.e. The Macabees] has decided to host the opening race to the so-called Formula 60! In this world championship, teams [probably funded by the development and manufacturer of the tank] will be able to compete with their nation's main battle tank [between 55 and 70 tons - all measurements should be assumed metric] - up to five tanks per team.

Races should be considered similar to 'against the clock'; tanks will start separately, regardless of team, and if one tank reaches a point where it can knock another tank out, it will do so! This will be done randomly by the excel spreadsheet - thankfully, Pablicosta just taught me how to put this into the game:

=IF(RAND()<(0.02/(1+$D3)),"O","R")

Reliability score: $D3

[This was so I don't forget when it's time to actually make the spreadsheet]

Nations will be able to role-play drop-outs as they'd like, including 'knock-outs' or mechanical issues; we will have something similar to the Football World Cup were players will be able to say what they allow their opponent to do, if their opponent posts their role-play first [role-play knock-outs, et cetera].

Major issues until this can work include:

- The excel spreadsheet; I don't understand how the math/commands work, and so making the excel spreadsheet is very painful for me. The way I've been thinking of doing it is getting the maps done first [look at the next point] and then making a spreadsheet for each map, wherein the equation would take into account several factors: terrain type, length of section, elevation and then a modifier for the vehicle based on its characteristics - each tank would have to get rated on a number of characteristics, to be announced]. Then the total time would just be all of these individual times for each section of the track added in. Since this will be a rally, and not composed of laps, then each section will be completely different. Each vehicle should take at least 60 minutes to complete the track, IMO.
- Maps and tracks; anybody that is interested, please make a map and a track. For now, I will host one at Fedala [Grán Prix Golden Throne] and if I feel like putting up with my 800MHz computer a second one outside of Macabea [Grán Prix Dienstad (for the region)]. I think around ten tracks for the first competition would be fine.
- Tank characteristics for the modifiers and how to introduce reliability as a different characteristic. Tank characteristics will include its ability to go over rough terrain [vertical deflection of the roadwheels & rating of the suspension], ability to climb high slopes [to rate velocity], et cetera. All of this will effect time. The reliability modifier will effect the knock-out/drop-out rate; basically, if the time is less than the number then the tank will appear as a drop-out/knock-out.

If anybody is willing to either help me with the spreadsheet or do the scorination, I would be very grateful (at least help, please!).

In regards to tanks, the tank has to be a main battle tank and modified Christie-suspension tanks to maximize on velocity don't count! After all, gunnery is still important to knock-out other tanks and armor is still important to survive hits [even if it's all up to luck in the spreadsheet].

What do y'all think?

I'd definately sign up - no surprises there. Also, with regards to tracks, I'd probably submit one, but what types of track do you mean? Ones like motor-racing circuits or more like a hillclimb sort of track, with a finish and an end rather than laps?

I think it sounds very good, especially the random aspect we've now got: now while I'm not gonna be able to do anything for you tonight, I'll see about doing a race course for you. How does it sound basing it in some sort of massive military training zone, with 5 different zones to try it out in:
- Urban (start)
- Prarie (part on-road, mostly off-road)
- Desert/Arid (all off-road)
- Marshland
- Forest

This would test all aspects of a battle tank in many different theatres, and if done at very long ranges will allow for contestants to truly test their vehicles. This could also make fuel an issue, with fuel stations provided serving different fuels to show engine versitility.
Also, with the upper weight limit: is it really necessary?

Definately the latter, like a rally. Basically, the terrain should be made with the fact that a tank has to go over it in mind, so maybe sudden highly sloped climbs, the tank has to go over a lip [tanks with the ability to over higher obstacles will have an advantage and a modifier], et cetera.

Don't worry about it ... this is going to take time to get going.

Yes, like this.

That's a good idea; I can add a modifier to the total time based on the tank's maximum range rating, in which it would equate the time it would take for 'pit stops' [filling the tank with 1,600l worth of fuel will take some time :p ].

Also, with the upper weight limit: is it really necessary?

I don't want tanks to have unfair advantages when they are increased in physical size [the ability to climb over taller obstacles, etc], that smaller tanks can't compete with. Normally, size comes with engine issues and such, but I don't think many nations will accept this.

I have a 75 ton tank---canI strip it down to the acceptable weight--like losing some armor? Or is 75 tons ok...I need to work on the engine its an old design, with little detail and my range might be too high but I will work that out...is 75 tons cool?

Yea, I think 75 tonnes is fine.

Right then: I've finished the map! Start at top in city at various positions, and end up in the fortified zone, with trenches, barbed and artillery test-firing galore. I have yet to add the waypoints to this, and am taking suggestions. Also, do you wnat me to include special route options that will include road/less river in exchange for ruined and afforested sections? Or road sections that take a much more winding route than a straight course?
Anyhow, here it is (note: is a long picture) -

Zones:
Urban
Grassland
Desert
Marshland
Forest
Mountainous terrain
Fortified Zone

Plus, I'll be stripping down my heavy tanks to make them weigh a more suitable amount: basically just removing the roof armour it carries and replacing it with thin steel plate. Would that be sufficient do you think?

Can I sign up with two teams, the Army team and Allanean Arms team?

The Army team will naturally drive 1A3's.
