NSWC Signups

World Cup 41 Introduction:

For more information on the World Cup, its History, how it works, who runs it, and the competitions related to it, check out the World Cup Wiki Site (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/world_cup.html).

The NSWC is a tournament for any NS nation who signs up. This World Cup is about to start its 41st competition, and your nation can take part! Every team is given a rank based on their performances in previous Cups, and the starting rank is roughly 200 (the Current 'best team in the world' is Capitalizt SLANI, with a rank of 1) See: KPB Rankings (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/kpb_ranking_system.html)

Scores are generated using either a Java program or through various or MS Excel sheet 'scorinators' which use random numbers, weighted by ranking and RP bonus to produce the scores.

It is encouraged for Nations to RP - roleplay - their matches, team rosters, players and such. Good RPs will help raise your chance of winning (especially in the Baptism of Fire). Please note: A lot of RPs does not guarantee goals or wins, but your chances are improved of this happening. i.e. Two debutant, non-ranked, nations play each other. One has RP'd a few times, the other has not. The nation who has participated should have the better probability of victory, but still has a chance of a Win, Loss or Draw.

RPs can be Team Roster announcements, fan comments, press conferences, media stories, anything about the game, as long as you've kept to the score as posted or TGd to you by the host/scorer.

For any other questions you may have, please see the World Cup FAQs article on NSwiki. (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/world_cup_faqs.html) - Courtesy of Starblaydia

The longest-running sports-competition in NationStates reaches its forty-first tournament: the Football (Soccer) World Cup. Please do specify if you have not participated before.

If your nation is new to the World Cup, or if you have no KPB points, you may be able to take part in the preliminary Baptism of Fire Cup (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/baptism_of_fire.html) competition.
If this is your first Cup, please indicate whether you wish to be registered for the Baptism of Fire or not.

Puppets have to post with their nation and identify their master. One Puppet per Master nation, and you may only enter a puppet once you have already competed in a World Cup

The Ofedestan Occurence
Ofedestan signing up for WC

The main aim of the ONFL , in this (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=553949 )thread, is to select a squad for WC41. It seems that the plan must be scaled down, due to the fact that the WC is nearly upon us. The selectors will only watch one match, after a few for the teams to get to know each other. These selectors will decide on a squad for the WC. The league will continue, with the top 8 playing each other in knockout matches to decide the winner. The result: a squad for the WC41 and BoF, which have been signed up for.

Just a quick RP. I am signing up for WC and BoF.

The Starblaydi Football Association would like to enquire precisely who these people are, as they appear to be completely imaginary.

A responce from the SSFA for those not familiar with the SouthSuburbia sporting scene:

F. Bartez
One time circus clown (former Northwest Clown of the year winner) turned pro goalkeeper late (age21) and learnt the beautiful game at a series of journeyman clubs before making his big breakthough at Sporting Reds who have dominated South Suburban domestic competition for many years. After retirement he went on to manage their arch rivals Utd. Blue FC leading them to their first trophy in 37years. Poached by the SSFA late last summer to lead the challenge in World Cup41 he rarely gives interviews.

Z. Zidaine
Professional boxer turned sports psycholgist widely acclaimed the greatest ever boxer (athlete) ever to be born in SouthSuburbia winning the National Heavyweight title no less than five times. His career abruptly ended with a nasty headbutt incident during his 6th title defence. Now a sporting psychologist he has been brought into the coaching set up to instill fighting spirit and national pride into the team.

'These are clearly not imaginary people; they are national heros in South Suburbia. Though in the crowded world of sports superstars their fame has clearly not spread far.'

Dennisov
23-04-2008, 14:46
Dennisov has once again felt the need to enter a competition.
Much has changed in sportminding Dennisov, the sport, although never the biggest in the country, has fallen into mere amateur status.

As a new head was recently appointed in the department of sport, they felt the need to participate in WC 41 to try and let the sport grow.

Dennisov, a former competitor, a former champion, seeks approval to take part in the qualification process and hopefully the main event as well.

The committee of selectors has already been appointed to find raw talents to try and put some fire back into the sport and hopefully make the sport as big as Dennisov Rules Football or Icehockey.

I.e. I have more time to actively participate and write some stories about the tournament and the games played.

The nation of WEST STARBLAYDIA signs up. It is the IC puppet of Starblaydia; however is the OOC main nation of the player behind Krytenia. For RP reasons, West Starblaydia shall inherit Krytenia's KPB points.

The nation of KRYTENIA, signed up previously, remains signed up; however for RP reasons will be participating under the name "Free Krytenian Rebels" with a KPB of 0.

Universitus University
09-05-2008, 19:32
(Somewhat complex side-note: Universitus University is technically a puppet of "Jey" who has already participated in the Baptism of Fire and earned KPB points.

However, even Jey's previous involvement in this tournament was represented by Universitus, but was without the username Universitus. The school represents Jey in all tournaments, and thus its earned points should be appropraited to "Jey" and added onto Jey's existing KPB point value. Jey and Universitus will never participate in the same tournament together, so there will not be two Jevian squads earning one nation's KPB points.

As a request to the hosts and the keeper of the sign-up lists, could Universitus be referred to from now on as "Universitus University (Jey)" to remove any confusion?

Also, Universitus University has not signed up for the Baptism of Fire and should be removed from that list. Doing so would violate the rules of joining that tournament.)

Sorry SB but we got somebody hosting. However, in the future we'd love you to host.

From what I gather at the moment, the following countries are currently slotted for the Baptism of Fire (updated from the main list):

Dariusville (Nethertopia)
Bearbears
Alversia
Ma Raque
Frontenax
Ofedestan
SouthSuburbia
Unified Beretania
Nehrland
United Hetzel
Tokyoni
Talon Deil
Gwaine
Kenavt
The Indonesian states
Zarbli
Arroza
Steel Butterfly
Vonks

I suppose that we'll keep this list open to the general public until 2008 May 19 1200GMT (12:00pm GMT for those who don't know). That way we can get started with the BoF and not need to delay the WC any longer. I'll hope for 20 contestants (and maybe 24 if we're really lucky...). If we reach 24 participants, the list will close automatically upon confirmation of the 24th participant.

So there you have it - SIGN UP VOLKS!

Just wondering, could I be in both the World Cup and the Baptism of Fire? Or do I, as a new nation, have to pick?
Starblaydia

From Baptism of Fire (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/baptism_of_fire.html)

The Baptism of Fire tournament is a preliminary tournament to the World Cup, in which only new nations (newbs, or at least, nations with no KPB points) are allowed

The RP-bonus is higher than usual (and furthermore is the only variable separating the teams besides luck) since the main intention of this tournament is to give a ranking boost for the World Cup to RPing newbs. Indeed, the Baptism of Fire tournament (#nssport-slang: BoF) influences the KPB ranking system.

You sign up for the World Cup, that's what this thread is for. Being a brand-new World Cup nation, you get to compete in the Baptism of Fire beforehand, not only in order to get some RPing and Footballing experience, but also gain a slightly higher rank from it so you won't get killed in the World Cup Qualifiers.

You can't have a puppet until you have competed in a WORLD CUP. It's in the rules somewhere, but can't remember where.

yes he can. Pi is and can be called trhe puppet of the former Vanek Drury Brieres, and kenavt is known as the recoming of VDB, but pi cannot enter the Bof anyways because it is to late, anyways i would wait till the next round Wc42 because it would be technically right

Since we have 20 teams, no one has yet objected to the closing of the BoF sign-ups, and I've got a lot of time on hand, I'm unilaterally closing the BoF sign-ups (barring a sudden influx of 4 anxious, highly-motivated participants wanting a last minute entrance into the BoF before Monday 1200GMT).

The list as follows:

The main thread for Rosters/RPs/scores/etc will appear soon.

And to add some steam to the discussion:

Pi would not be able to enter the competition for two primary reasons (not inclusive):

(1) New players/nations are not allowed to have puppets in their first/inaugural arrival in the World Cup;

(2) If kenavt is a puppet himself of a nation participating the World Cup, players are only allowed one puppet per Cup Season.

If kenavt is a puppet of a country that is not participating, that complicates the issue. I'm not certain if there's any convention against it.
kenavt
19-05-2008, 21:33
OK then. What I want is a fresh start with the World Cups (I have been in two before as the VDB), so I'll just withdraw Pi-mainly because I realized, naively, I don't have the time to RP two countries in the WC and do all the other things I want to do.

I DO NOT consider Kenavt to be a puppet of the VDB, since the VDB is no more and I cannot remember the password to revive it.

I think the Indonesian States competed in World Cup 37.

Yes (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13051042&postcount=4), they did.

A simple thing to do would be eject The Indonesian States from the BoF and put in Barheim in, who sort-of signed up here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13709837&postcount=4546) in the WCDT.

EDIT: Added in from the BoF in italics to avoid confusion - didn't mean to suggest kicking The Indonesian States out of the World Cup at all, was purely referencing the BoF.

Barheim is my brother, by the way. I'm sure he'd be happy with that result.

So I cannot compete in the current BoF?

No, nations are only allowed one attempt at the BoF.

The only way you could play in it is if your KPB has been reset zero and that you never competed in the BoF for WC37 (or earlier) in the first place.

Barheim is my brother, by the way. I'm sure he'd be happy with that result.

EDIT: I'm not sure how this falls under your puppet laws though, since technically you have no real way of knowing if Barheim is my brother or just a puppet of my own.

We used to have a husband and wife duo (Andossa Se Mitrin Vega, Dorian and Sonya), and initally D&S was counted as a puppet of ASMV because they used the same computer - a bit like UN/WA multiple user, same IP = same user. Eventually we just got used to them being two separate nations and D&S lost their official 'puppet' status (or it was simply forgotten about).

I think the simple rule is that if you would be violating WA rules by both having WA membership, then one is a puppet of the other. If you have seperate computers/IPs/WA memberships, then there's no problem (that I know of).

We don't usually use the same computers, but we certainly do and can. (Neither is in the WA.) So apparently that means Barheim is out until WC42 when I can have a "puppet."

Which still leaves us with the problem of the 20th participant in the BoF. Didn't someone else apply but get turned down because they'd be one too many?

As it stands (that is, to my knowledge), we have 3 possible solutions to the BoF slots.

1. Barheim is admitted as a separate entity of Steel Butterfly and is admitted to the BoF;

2. Barheim is perceived as a puppet of Steel Butterfly and unable to compete in the WC tournament, in which case the first available participant takes the 20th position (Naggetski);

3. We manage to get 5 more applications to the BoF before the final resolution is done, in which case I bust a$$ and redraw the BoF for 24 teams (not likely, but still possible).

A few notices:

Pi (or that really long number that tortures students of trigonometry) has withdrawn its application from the World Cup, as a puppet of kenavt.

SFRS would only be admitted to the BoF if 4 more valid applications to the BoF were realized in the next few days/hours, since Naggetski posted theirs in advance. Note, I'm basing this on what I've seen in the recent posts; if there is another available BoF application that is prior to any or all of the recent posts, then that person would have priority for the 20th spot.

EDIT --- per this post (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13713552&postcount=4557), Naggetski will be the 20th participant in the BoF.

Fmjphoenix
Talon Deil

Universitus University
Kirrin Island

This list is subject to change in the near future, and this is a friendly reminder that you should keep your countries alive during the World Cup. If we find any countries that cease to exist (aka CtE, CTE, cte, :fluffle:), they will receive -80 penalty at the end of an appropriate period (end of Qualifiers, end of Group Stage in World Cup, etc).
