Well, first of all, hi there, thanks for dropping by to read my thread!
I have appeared in various incarnations on NS, participating in various RPs in various roles and forms. I think that I now have grasped the basic principles of how setting up an RP works, and thus, I would like to launch my first one. As I said, this will be the first RP I'm starting, so please spare me if you think my setting is stupid, rules are ill-defined etc etc... Constructive criticism is always welcome though!
Okies, so anyways, let's get to the part of interest to all of you who cared to drop by:
The RP will take place on the planet Eden-4, a colony of humanity. The colonists are refugees, which fled Earth for various reasons ranging from being simple criminals to wanting to establish a religious community outside Earth's sphere of power. Several decades prior to the start of the RP, the planet underwent a large-scale terraforming project in the wake of which the colonists discovered a large underground facility the origin of which could not be confirmed. However, it was accidentally activated and had the apparent function of generating a field on the planet which "thinned" reality, effectively giving every consciousness within the field the ability to modify reality, though on a very limited scale, depending upon the mental capacity and training of the respective individual. The government of Earth was very interested in the facility and attempted to retrieve it. One way or the other, war ensues between Earth and Eden-4, and Earth, being lightyears away, luckily doesn't bring in its whole military power, but instead relies on a force of robots - which, being non-conscious, cannot use psionic abilities on the planet - and mercenaries from two nearby colonies, the highly capitalist Magera colony, which uses trickery and WMDs, and the Cormera colony, which is based on a medieval concept of honour and warrior culture, but a very FT concept of weaponry. The war goes on for awhile, but finally, the Edenites win against their opponents. The Cormerans die with honour, but the Magerans, being forced to retreat, pull one last dirty trick: With the last Mageran division leaving the orbit of Eden-4, a delayed-action Full-Spectrum Bomb detonates on the wartorn continent of Southfar (my nation's name...), the population center of the planet. This weapon overloads the entire EM spectrum, causing the death of millions of colonists and turning the green continent into a desert. It also has the long-term effect of disrupting the planet's central government and disabling wireless communication on the planet for the coming decades due to radation lingering in the upper atmosphere. The weapon was originally designed to destroy the psionic field, but that is apparently what it did not do, because people retained their psionic powers on the planet. However, with its technological center collapsed, no government, many production facilities destroyed and no effective means of communication, the remaining colonists organized themselves in different groups, then nations. Communications, at least on the planet, were restored by 20th century-like wire-based communication systems and trained telepaths. However, the nations, once divided, distrustful of one another and are unlikely to be united again the near future.
Now, a more worrying effect kicks in: the male population of the planet is rapidly declining. Scientists have found that this is caused by the rapid deterioration of the Y chromosome, caused by the radiation load on the planet.
Amongst this chaos stands the organization SERAPH (no, this doesn't stand for anything, I just though caps look kinda kewl on this...), which, founded by Angela, a mysterious female super-psionic during the chaotic days after the bomb had devastated the planet, has retained most of the pre-war technology, including powered exoskeletons that are powered by their wearer's psionic powers. These exoskeletons, called Angel Suits, allow superhuman feats, such as flying, if piloted by a strong telepath.
SERAPH has two goals:
1) Find a way to stop the threatening extinction of Eden's inhabitants. The organization goes at length, not excluding cruel human experimentation, to find a cure.
2) Reunite the shattered nations of the planet to form one peaceful community like before the war.
Meanwhile, the Republic of Germanistan, one of the nations, goes on what appears to be a land grab, making use of its superior military power against its neighbours, weakened by the reduction in the male populace. Germanistan has retained a high male percentage because its Chancellor has allowed a group of Cormeran soldiers, who had crashed in the area at the end of the war, to live - in exchange for their military service.
In rapid succession, the nations of Java, Romera and, at the very beginning of the RP, Litovia, fall to the juggernaught. The reasons for Germanistan's sudden aggression, however, are far more complex than simply desire for power and resources - in a way, the Republic attempts to save Eden-4's population - they're just doing it in a totally different way to SERAPH.
Phew, pretty long text, sorry for boring thee...

Ok, so this is were you kick in: the setting offers plenty of characters to be made. Howabout a Romeran resistance fighter. Romera is a jungle nation, something like Columbia in RL, and a rebel girl with kewl army clothing, dressed in ammo belts from her hips upwards and an RPG or HMG strapped on her back, wouldn't that be sexy :)? Or you can make a SERAPH Knight with his Angel Suit, trying to combat the Germanistan army on locations all over the globe. Or a gifted telepath advancing through the ranks of the Germanistan army, ultimately becoming a fighter ranked high enough to be pittched against any of the previous two in a one-on-one battle. And, and, and...
As for the tech level, although it is FT, please do not use outlandish technology - it should be more like a future alternate tech, not extreme science fiction. You may use androids, but non-humanoid robots are generally preferred. Also, the humans on Eden-4 have lost large parts of their spacefaring technology during the war, thus, all spaceships that can travel beyond orbital ranges are likely relics from before the war or are government projects that require the funding of a whole nation to be constructed.
What's more is the use of psionics. Not everybody on the planet will go heck crazy and lift up trees and houses with willpower and smack them at his or her enemies, nor will they go around and say: Hey, mate, I just read in your mind that your're reading my mind! And the other one goes like: Yeah, I know that you read it, I just read so in yours, so no need to tell me!
No, that's not the idea! The idea of the psionic powers is to enable something like magic in an FT setting, and, like magic, characters with this trait require training and are restricted to a certain set of feats. Though you can become a master telepath, this will require years of training or very good genes...
Also, I would like to make this more a space opera than a science fiction story, so please keep the supply of alien species sparse. Massive amounts of alien technology and influx would perhaps upset the delicate balance of atmosphere I'm trying to create here...

You could read a more complete concept of the planet Eden-4 on NSwiki, unfortunately, the site appears to be totally down by now, so you have to make do with my post, sorrysorry...
MAP SOON TO COME!
