The Cafundelense/Casaran throwing-things-at-other-things Challenge

Casari
03-02-2008, 03:29
In the interest of increasing international competition in sport, the nations of Casari and Cafundeu are proud to announce an international match series featuring seven of the slightly less noticeable sports on the international scene.

Consisting of Bocce, Bowls, Ten-pin Bowling, Curling, Darts, throwing rocks at Windows, and competitive beer-sliding, the series looks to be relatively exciting compared to other international contests, opening the doors for competition in a number of different sports that don't see international competition at any level at present.

When asked about the competition, some old gentlemen playing lawn bowls at a seniors community said, "Well, if they're doing it, we might as well watch it- it's surely not as boring as the World Cup."

Indeed, in a number of areas trials to see who will represent Casari in the various sports are already taking place, particularly at various Curling clubs up in the mountains. Bocce and Bowls competitions are already scheduled to take place in Kominsky Park to find suitable players in those sports as well.

"We're confident that Casari will put forth a strong showing, and hopefully we can find more opponents for series such as these- and in other sports that we rarely get to see played at any high level," a Casaran member of the competition organizing committee said to reporters.

The series is expected to start in Cafundeu with Bocce, but venues and locations for many of the competitions are still yet to be decided.

THE CAFUNDELENSE COMPETITIVE SPORTS ORGANIZATION PRESENTS
The CafuCasa Challenge - 7 highly competitive sports

Today, the Cafundelense Competitive Sports Organization (CCSO), responsible for the creation of many sports challenges in Cafundéu, announced that Cafundéu will host a challenge of 7 highly competitive sports against Casari. The news were commemorated by many sports addicts, who were wanting to see more competitions being held in the country.

The sports chosen for the challenge are: Bocce, Bowls, Bowling, Curling, Darts, Rock-Throwing and Beer-Sliding. When asked if the sports chosen were unpopular, the president of the CCSO, Dedé Mococa, said: "Less popular than American Football?" This phrase was decisive. Surely they were more popular than American Football in Cafundéu. In fact, Bocce, Bowling and Darts are very popular in Cafundéu (especially Bocce, Cafundéu has a big national Bocce competition).

Of the seven sports, Bocce is surely the one in which Cafundéu has the best players. Three pairs will compete in the challenge. One of them, of course, is the title holders of Cafundéu Bocce Association: Wagner de Alcântara and Vinícius Fantorras. Wagner de Alcântara, aged 112, is considered a legend in the sport. Playing since he was 61 (more than 50 years of career!), he is confident. Talking with a mixed language between Portuguese and Italian (difficult to understand and even more difficult to translate), he said:

"Bocce is my life. When I retired from work, I found in Bocce happiness. Found many other friends of my age. After the death of my wife, I promised that I'd try to win as many titles as possible, to make her proud. Cafundéu is good in this sport. These... (we weren't able to translate what he said, but these words probably weren't nice for the Casarans) ...Casarans can't defeat me."

His partner is a bit younger. Vinícius is aged 91. The CCSO will send the names of the other competitors later.

Bowls and Bowling are popular in Cafundéu too. Unfortunately, the number of professional players isn't so big. It's more common to see young players with few experience, who play just for fun. At least in Bowling there is a major competition, but Bowls have difficulties in this area, due to the popularity of Bocce (new athletes [retired workers] prefer to play Bocce rather than Bowls). In Bowling, the competition will be among pairs (in Bowls too). The pair Fágner Fagundes and Gustavo Melheiros Barros are very good, and are fighting for the individual title. Fágner said:

"We're practising hard for this competition. It'll be a good opportunity for us to show our talent outside to the foreigners. We are in this competition not just for the title, but for the experience."

Curling is Cafundéu's weakest point. The president of the CCSO said about this issue: "Yes, we don't have good Curling players, but we can surprise them. We will look at remoted villages to see if someone plays Curling well there." About Darts, the team is already complete, and will compose the best pub-players and some others that don't have other thing more important to do than to throw darts. "It's an interesting sport, very fun and competitive," said Denise Jovanelli, leader of the team.

The other two competitions are a surprise. A sport for kids, Rock-Throwing is popular in violent neighbourhoods. The kids love to throw rocks at their neighbours' windows. Many kids showed interest in playing this competition. When the CCSO said that the game would be played in an abandoned neighbourhood, some complained. "This isn't fun. I like to hear the complaints of the house owner when he realizes that I broke his window. It's nice!" Said a kid. The CCSO told the media that changes in the selected neighbourhood are possible.

And then comes Beer-Sliding. A difficult and challenging sport, will probably be one of the most disputed and exciting of the challenge, as both countries are famous for the number of pubs and drunk people. One of the biggest bars of Cafundó do Juta, the Zezinho Freeway Pub, will send its bartender to the competition. "In Fridays and Saturdays I have to deliver many mugs of beer in a short period of time. I'm more than ready for this competition," said Armelindo Siqueira Kissen, the bartender. The competitors will have to slide mugs of beer to the customers.

The CCSO will release the list of competitors later, but already sent the venues. "We wanted to do everything in just one city, but other cities complained, so four cities were chosen." The order of the competitions wasn't released too.

The venues:

Bocce - Club of Retired Lawyers, in Cafundó do Juta
Bowls - Tax Collectors' Association's Farm, in Abadia
Bowling - Palacete das Compras (a giant shopping mall), in Cafundó do Juta
Curling - Nordestão Sports Centre, in Dunboor
Darts - Ji-Pamena beach, in Lasft
Rock-Throwing - Barra Pesada neighbourhood, in Lasft
Beer-Sliding - Zezinho Freeway Pub, in Cafundó do Juta

The opening and ending ceremonies will be in the Praça Maior stadium, in Cafundó do Juta.

The CCSO said that the goal of the challenge is to unite the countries and to play healthy and nice games. After the competition, a party will happen. Something like this:

The sight of small, heavy spheres flying through the air was common at Kominsky Park today, as a surprisingly large turnout showed up to compete in the Bocce and Bowls tournament to see who would be named to play in Cafundeu.

The winners of the Bocce portion, showing incredable style in blowing past their opponents throughout the competition, brothers Oscar and Ryan Ellonsi showed that they'll be bringing considerable talent to Cafundéu for the competition.

"I think we're being counted out, and that's just a bit disturbing, but we feel we're going to be quite competitive. We're not even risking a heartattack by walking out onto the field."

The other two pairs will be the second and third place finishers, Ryan Merciero and Arthur Caza, who lost to the champion brothers in the final match of the day, and Ari Danielson and Lori Ursan, the pair of 24-year-olds who made short work of their opponents in the Third-place playoff.

On the Bowls side, the winners were Greg Fox and Marcus Alliens, who've had a string of championship wins to their credit over the last 5 years. Following them to Cafundeu is Greg Simmons and Bill Walters, and Will Ferris and Terry Grant. Singles competitiors have yet to be named, however, but this is expected to be done shortly.

Up in the mountains, however, a Curling champion has emerged, those being the team from the North Prescott Curling Club. Team Captain Lucia Fitzroy was excited about the teams victory, saying, "We're quite looking forward to the competition, and hopefully we'll bring one home to Casari."

---

Regrettably, we feel the need to inform the representatives from Qazox that at this time, this is a match series between the two nations, and thusly is not currently open for more signups. However, if interested, the various organizing bodies in Casari will happily organize and participate in a similar international series against Qazox (or any other nation, for that matter) in any sports they care to play.

The remaining members of the Casaran roster for the upcoming challenge in Cafundeu assembled in Tyrellia today, as the group filed aboard a large red Casair airship for the trip abroad.

"We're quite excited for the trip, and hopefully we bring home a win." Lori Ursan said while boarding the ship, followed by the rest of the delegation what said most of the same things.

While underdogs in a number of sports, the Casarans should be favored in a number of events, particular the competitive beer service. "We drink plenty of it and we certainly aren't patient about it." A bar patron said to reporters.

With the competition starting soon, the event organizers released the complete Casaran roster for the series of events, including those determined through domestic tournament wins.

After one round, Casari holds a narrow lead in the challenge with Cafundéu- but the situation is far more unstable than fans would like.

Leading in 4 competitions (Beering, both competitions in Bowls, Curling, and Darts), Casari's greatest lead is only 4-1 in Darts, the other competitions Casari holding narrow 2-1 or 5 glass leads- nothing to write home about.

In the meantime, two of Cafundéu's leads seem unassailable 3-0 numbers, requiring 5 of 6 runs in the final rounds to catch up. The picture seems slightly more bleak in rockthrowing, where the Casaran side will need two running round wins to take the competition.

"I think we still have a rather good chance." said Lucia Fitzroy, outspoken skip of the North Presscot Curling Club, said to reporters. "We're quite strong in the competitions we have a lead in, and I have a hard time believing that we would surrender that lead in the coming days. In the sports where we're behind, too I wouldn't count comebacks out- anyone at this level is bound to be good."

The second round will start after a short delay, during which the teams are intensely training, particularly Mike Tarrini, who has been serving drinks at an impressive rate to his Casaran teammates.

"They're good drinkers, and they're giving me quite a difficult training regimen."

MIXED PERFORMANCES IN FIRST ROUND FOR CAFUNDÉU

The CCSO released small notes about its impression over the performances of Cafundéu in each of the sports:

Bowls - although the Cafundelense athletes are losing in this competition, the Casaran win wasn't so impressive. Most of the games in the first round were disputed, and the Casarans will have to show much more talent to have the final laugh.

Bocce - in this one, we were able to show superiority. The legend Wagner de Alcântara was simply amazing in this game, and the other two pairs showed that Bocce in Cafundéu is a serious thing. A good advantage.

Curling - we had to find our Curling players in very remote villages, so we don't know much about these teams. The results weren't the best ones, but it is still to early to tell if we made wrong choices.

Bowling - WOW! The Cafundelenses are simply amazing in this sport. The pins can't resist the power of our balls, our players have excellent skills. Usually considered a game to be played just for fun here in Cafundéu, this time we can see that we have Cafundelenses that play Bowling for passion, in a professional way.

Darts - ARGH! I know, darts are usually considered game for children here, but I really expected more from my athletes.

Rock-Throwing - I'm not proud to say this, but our kids are good in destroying the others' windows. There was even one kid that was able to hit all the windows! Incredible! Maybe if he joins the army, he can be very good at throwing grenades too!

Beer-Sliding - Cafundéu's bars and pubs are crowded every day (not much on Sundays, I must admit), especially on Fridays and Saturdays. So, our bartenders could have done a bit better. Well, there's always time for this, so I'm confident that we can react.

Casari wins event, 5-4
Casari

In a hotly contested contest between Casari and Cafundéu, the competition wound to completion today, with Casari winning a narrow win in the competition, 4 events to 3.

"It was a hard competition- much harder than I thought it would be going in, and with a much higher intensity level that I had expected." Bowls player Greg Simmons said to CasariTV today. "At the same time, however, it was a truly exciting competition, and I'm happy to have taken part- many of these competitions could have gone either way, and we were quite lucky to make it out with a narrow win."

The Casaran wins- in Beering, Bowls, Curling, and Darts- were all much closer than the events won by Cafundéu- including an 8-1 demolishing in Bowling, which seems to reflect the attitude towards the sport at home. At the same time, Casari was the prohibitive favorite in Curling coming in (as was Cafundéu in Bocce), giving more proof that the nations expected to do well in events prior to the competition managed to come through on those expectations.

"I think this competition opens the field for many more in the future, and I don't think that's a bad thing at all."
