Ascension

The man formerly known as Timothy Jacobs (and once 'Umr at-Tawil, and any number of other aliases), now called only The Lurker at the Threshold, ascended the podium. In the crowded square of Celephais below, thousands of his mindless subjects knelt in adoration. He smiled beatifically down on them, thinking of the road he had taken to achieve power. It was a longer road than most would be able to comprehend, spanning the aeons in it's subtle manipulation. Many of his followers had died on that road, though these were easily replaceable. Besides, the fate which awaited his enemies was far worse. Those that did not die in torture had their souls offered up to feed the master's nigh-insatiable hunger. Today was a good day, as seizing power from the previous military junta had left him well fed, and ready for the challenges of government. Yes, it was a good day to be a god.

He stood, still smiling down upon his people, if people they could still be called, as the high priest slowly brought forth the sacrifice. He watched the priest with as much interest as one might observe a favored pet. For so the priest was. In the thirty years of People's General Diaz' harsh rule, when all religion but the state had been outlawed, the man had remained true to his catholic vows, holding services out of his home until that was burned to the ground, then out of the jungle until he was captured. Yet, in spite his great faith in his “one true God,” the old padre had been unable to stand firm when faced with the cosmic infinity of the Lurker. Yet his servitude was not the mindless love of so many of the civilians; it was true faith, utter devotion, and that made it so much sweeter.
