OOC: With the kind permission of Allanea...
IC:
The baillif hit the ground with his staff. "Hear ye, Hear Ye. The Imperial Court of Special Administrative Issues and International Law is Now in Session. All rise. The Right Honourable Justice Carael presiding. May the Radiance of the Light Shine Forth Upon this Court and Discover the Beauty of the Truth." His role done, the bailiff retreated to his stand.
"Please sit." Judge Carael indicated to the two attorneys. "In The Matter of Alexander Kirillovich Kazansky, is the Prosecution ready?"
"I am, Your Honour." Prosecuting Attorney Michael Kohn said from his own seat, thumbing through a long list of briefs.
"Is the defence ready?"
The defence attorney morosely looked up from where he was reading a much smaller brief. "As ready as I can be, Your Honour."
"Cheer up, Mister Vale! Her Majesty has utmost confidence in your ability to represent your client to the best of your ability!" The judge looked at a note handed to him by the bailiff. "Now, the man we're discussing couldn't be here today, is that correct?"
"Indeed so, Your Honour." The Defence Attorney sighed. "I have had the note submitted to the court record, as I believe it is a vital piece of evidence for my own case. Be that as it may, I will do my best."
"Excellent. Well, Mister Kohn? Your opening statement, if you please."
Kohn rose to his feet and strode into the middle of the room, his black silk robes trailing behind him slightly. "Your honour, my learned friends. Today it is my humble honour and duty to prove in the eyes of this court, the galaxy, and the Universe at large that the entity known as Alexander Kirrilovich Kazansky is a rapist, a murderer, a thief, a colluder in genocide, a terrible source of chaos and disorder; and therefore Allanea is not a fit nation to trade with this Empire, or, possibly, any other. During this hearing, I intend to prove beyond reasonable doubt that not only was Alexander Kazansky guilty of the most heinous crimes, but that he retains the capability and intention of performing more."
"Thank you very much, Mister Kohn. Mister Vale?"
"Er... yes. This is very unusual, but..." Mister Vale rose to his own feet as the prosecutor sat down. "I agree with my learned friend's assertions. All of them. In fact, the harsher the punishment, the better!"
The judge leaned forward. "Mister Vale. I understand you are, in fact, the defence counsel?"
"Indeed I am, Your Honour. But this man is so rampant in his guilt that this is in fact the best defence to be had!" Vale pointed across the room at where Kazansky's portrait, as sane a one as the Roanians could find in their archives, sat on a chair. "See the vile criminal, too cowardly to come forward and face the court!"
"Yes, well... I assume you're entering some defence?" The Judge enquired, slightly off balance. "Otherwise, we could just wrap this up right now."
"Well, yes. I enter a plea of insanity. I also make an appeal to this court that this trial be shut down immediately." Vale thumbed through his notes. "On the grounds that as leader of a sovereign, or semi-sovereign nation, Alexander Kazansky should be immune to trial from all other nations, and Allanea should recieve the same treatment as others."
"Appeal will be considered." The judge slammed his gavel on the bench. "We will have a fifteen minute recess while I consult with my colleagues and Her Majesty's Legal Officers."
