Casari4Sport presents The Random Sports Report

With all the various sports taking place, most of which don't have a proper place elsewhere to be reported upon, CasariMedia Group's World Service, in conjunction with 4Sport, has begin producing short World Reports in an effort to give the much more esoteric sports just a bit more international recognition. Or not, but we don't really care in that case, because we'll produce them anyway.

Update- Late Winter, 1528

Mahan was rather optimistic about the result of the series. "I think we performed very well, we let the third match get away from us, but we proved that we can compete well in all forms of the game, and many of our players showed that they're very competitive at this level. Wilson has some good showings, as did Tarras, he and Torrinson really stepped up offenseively and showed us that we don't have much to fear from the Firanian bowling attack, and though we had our highs and lows... it was a very successful series, and we're well prepared for the Jaristan tour coming to Casari in a few weeks.

Casari's next challenge is the aforementioned six-match Jaristan tour coming, while Firania is travelling to the much warmer nation of Tauurin for four matches themselves.

Tyrmani

The start of 1528 (and the depths of winter) sees the first motions of the local Casaran Tyrmani clubs- most easily explained as the Casaran answer to field hockey- and the beginning of the Inter-County season. The season starts, as it always has, with regional play, as the teams fight for their regional championships and the chance to continue on for the National Championship in the summer. But there's still a bit of snow on the ground, and after the first hald of regional play, the regions are predictably logjammed together in mid table- particularly in the Southwest, which is seeing a 5-way tie at 16 points, thanks to the regional whipping boy, County Hillan. Only two replays took place in the first half, which is surprising, particularly seeing how close the field is otherwise.

Casari's traditional bogey team of Jarista came to the country, to play a 6-match series, three five-day matches and three-three day matches. After a difficult start, dropping the first two rounds of the competition, the Casaran side managed to fight back, using their strength at batting in the shorter games to leverage a draw for the series.

Christopher Mayan was optimistic about the team's chances after a long losing drought in Island play. "The team is finally coming back around. We have a lot of youth talent among the clubs in the country, and hopefully this shows just how good of a chance we have this fall when the Island Championship comes around."

In the meantime, Firania traveled to Tauurin, taking three of four matches and showing a dominating pitching attack that was a bit hidden in the series against Casari. "We're improving every match, and I think every match we come into, they have to give us a chance." Captain Brian Eorian said after the series.

WINTER VIGIL SEASON IN FULL CRY
St. Catherine's Races to Shock Lead

By Fr. Athanasius the Solitary

With the national football team failing in yet another international tournament, sporting attention here in the Archregimancy has turned towards the one sport in which we can accurately claim to be the best in the world: monastic vigils.

The keen monastic sport fan will remember the dramatic summer vigil season, which saw St. John of Patmos dramatically pip The Holy Monastery of Xenophon on the very last weekend of the season, when Patmos' fasting Fr. Anthony the Lesser single-handedly fought off a mountain bear in order to protect his holy icon of St. John the Evangelist, thereby giving his monastery the 25 point 'wild animal bonus' necessary to win by a single point. Fr. Anthony, regrettably, will never be able to walk to liturgy again, but has regularly been seen giving thanks unto the Lord for both the victory, and allowing him to miraculously survive despite the massive blood loss and having his leg chewed off.

With the winter vigil season in full swing, it's no surprise to see traditional winter favourites Solovetsky, Borisoglebsky and Troitse-Sergieva filling three of the top four spots, but the big shock is that, with half the season gone, St. Catherine's in the Desert is holding on to top spot. Team members Fr. Ephraim the Syrian, Fr. Raphael the Wanderer, Fr. Basil the Red Beard and Fr. Michael the Wily have now been on solitary vigils in the far north for 40 days and 40 nights, fighting off wild beasts without even a scratch, eating little more than bark, nuts and roots (though Fr. Michael did find a nest of tree grubs that got him through a particularly lean fast), spleeping under only the thinnest of blankets, and witnessing an average of three miracles each.

Hieromonks from Solovetsky are said to be challenging the legitimacy of two of Fr. Raphael's miracles, but given the radiant light that others have seen radiating from his serene hesychastic state, sources close to the Monastic Vigil Association believe that the challenge is unlikely to succeed. In keeping with the MVA's opaque bookkeeping practices, no points totals will be released until the end of the season, but the desert fathers are believed to hold a narrow lead over the rest of the top four.

A spokesmonk for St. Catherines has said that the Elders of the desert monastery are 'thrilled' with the team's success. "It's no surprise to us" said a senior archimandrite, speaking on condition of anonymity. "What people tend to forget is that it gets very cold in the desert at night too. And we may not have wolves, but fighting off a pack of desert jackels is remarkably good training."

In other news, the perennial hapless cellar dwellers from the Painted Monastery of Voronets were disqualified last night after the entire vigil squad was eaten by a baying pack of ravenous wolves. The Monastic Vigil Association have led tributes to our brothers, and have asked us all to pray for their souls.

Tyrmani

The National Championships followed their reputation as a particularly tight competition, as four rounds of play left the country with a single National Tyrmani Champion,

First Round
Snyder 5:2 Barrin
Wheeler 4:1 Portio
Trajik 3:2 Dannson
Callax 0:1 Einhaven

Quarterfinal
Lexin 3:2 Snyder
Hornby 0:4 Wheeler
Firona 0:2 Trajik
Jillan 6:7 Einhaven R

Semifinal
Lexin 1:2 Wheeler
Trajik 2:4 Einhaven

Final
Wheeler 0:4 Einhaven

In a final with no first place teams in their region taking part, Einhaven managed to use it's lengthy playoff to get into the tournament to keep themselves in fine form, needing a replay to get past County Jillan but facing no other challenges on the way to their latest National Championship season, and giving them a leg up in the selection process for the Islands Championship team that will be traveling to Jarista for the competition later in the year.

Broomball

Dozens of teams came to the otherwise unheralded city of Ravendahl for an amateur broomball tournament. There was initial grumbling about the mandatory facemasks and other bulky equipment required, but after a broken nose in the women's division last year, officials erred on the side of caution. And it worked-there were no broken bones this time around.

In the women's division, the Maniax beat the Blue Lightning 1-0 in the final. Whether women will be allowed to compete in a separate division in the future is uncertain: many play in the open division, including multiple all-female teams. Proponents of the current status argue that they would be overwhelmed playing against men; opponents point to the fact that an all-male division would be seen as politically incorrect, and a double standard is in operation.

The Wild Blizzards won the open division final against the Albatrosses, 3-2. Albatross forward Bert Malkush was named player of the tournament: he scored their final goal in the Last Blast. This tradition is arguably the distinguishing feature of Zwangzug's version of broomball, beyond the fact it's the only "sport" (athletic or otherwise) in which violent play is seen as acceptable. When one team is leading at the end of the game (in the Wild Blizzards' case, 3-1) it is expected that the losers make an all-out attack: rather similar to the ice hockey custom of pulling the goalie, with a good deal of the defense joining in the fun. The winners, then, form a human mass in their own goal. Actually scoring is not expected, or indeed the point of the endeavor.

Auto Racing

The Tonaya Speed Trials are Casari's biggest auto racing event. Taking place on the complex Tonaya Racecourse, a three-cornered, wide, triangular track with progressive banking going from flat to a near-suicidal sixty-four degrees. Thousands of people show up for the event, which lasts for six days of competition and involves almost every single type of racing machine in the country. The only thing that is missing is the race.

Six days of a competition to see who can cover ten miles the fastest seems like one of the most boring concepts ever devised by man, but since the event's inception, it's grown to an immense size, becoming one of the crown jewels of Casaran Motorsport.

Day One

Tuesday was the first day of the competition, seeing partly cloudy skies over the oval, with temperatures in the high fifties in the early portion of the day, climbing and peaking at 78 in the afternoon. With the heat not being a critical factor, the grills of the cars were taped up and the speeds rose slightly.

The premier class of the competition, the Unlimited class, didn't see many takers on the first day, many of the competitors looking to save their time on the track for later. The first day Unlimited and Overall leader was the four-year old "catamaran" car of Oscar and Marcus Wells, made out of fiberglass on a then-new Anderson Formula B chassis. Their time of 2:43.7 was low on the first day- although that's almost certainly sure to drop before long.

In Class 5 for Sports Cars, the El-Dan Racing Nymax TR6 was the fastest, using all twelve cylinders of it's massive 5.4 liter engine to push it around the course just slower than the smaller and lighter prototype of the Wells Brothers, at a speed of 2:48.2.

The ultracompetitive Touring and Grand Touring cars made their appearances in force, with the Rowans Competition Lerain SKZ leading the Grand Touring Competition for Class 3 and 4 Grand Touring cars, while the Parini Competition Tour 2.0L lead the Class 1 and 2 Touring cars after the first day.

Tonaya Speed Trials
Day 2

The clouds closed over on Day Two, putting the fear of rain into almost all competitors. However, the temperatures dropped and speeds rose, giving the event a new overall leader.

The new leader was the first on the track in the morning, the Tiger Cars P11. The six-wheeled wonder used it's insanely low profile to good effect, the large V12 engine liberated from one of the company's more traditional racing cars pushing the team to the lead with a time of 2:38.8. The Wells Brothers took a shot at reclaiming the lead, but their 2:39.6 was only good enough for second place. Third sits Winton Racing's modified Easton Motors TKS-R, just behind at 2:39.9.

The Sports Car ranks were continued to be lead around by the El-Dan Racing Nymax TR6, driven by Formula Driver Michelle Nysak, bettering the car's time by a half second, to 2:47.7.

The Grand Touring and Touring Cars swarmed onto the track today, taking advantage of the unwillingness of the faster cars to go out as more and more threatening clouds appeared on the horizon. Mike Rowan and his Rowans Competition Lerain SKZ and the rival Aramanti S400 from the Aramanti Factory team were locked in a duel for most of the day, the latter pipping the former at the final moments of the day to hold the overnight lead. The Touring cars saw a number of similar fights, with teams racing to make adjustments and reenter the line to go out. The Bright Yellow Carras Motorsports Hunter S taking the lead in that category.

Day 2 finally saw the motorcycles- and their near-suicidal riders- finally wake from their slumber, with Will Campbell taking the lead overall and in the Open category on his giant modified 1200cc Friemanti. The 500cc Open class was lead by Jacques Illari, on a CMM model 498ZS, while the current leader for the 600cc Production category, incidentally, is also Will Campbell- this time on a more esoteric Rotary-powered Friemanti FKX model.

Tonaya Speed Trials
Final

Racing continued during the breaks in the depressing stretch of extended rain throughout the conclusion of the week, with some thrillingly fast runs put down while the track was dry, complete with crowning a new champion.

The car of Oscar and Marcus Wells looked the same at the end of the week, but during the week components had been changed, an engine was swapped out, transmission gears replaced- at one point they had borrowed a slightly ill-fitting nose cone to fit to the front of the car in the hopes of adjusting the intake, but in the end, it paid off, and the brothers became the first non-factory team in a decade to have the fastest car in the nation.

Domination was the story in Sports Cars, where nobody found the speed to make it around faster than El-Dan Racing's Nymax TR6, who lead by more than a second and was never in real danger of giving the lead up.

The category for Grand Touring cars was the opposite, with the lead flipping back and forth regularly, before settling on the Tiger Cars ZLX of Edman Racing and it's driver Ethan Scott on the final day. In Touring Cars, the team that started in front ended up finishing in front as well, with the Parini Competition Tour 2.0L reclaiming the fastest time on the last day.

In Motorcycles, Will Campbell's 1200cc Friemanti was far too suicidal to do anything but win, While Kyle Peters won the 500cc Class with a 500cc Jakkar machine, while the Rotary Friemanti FKXs easily outpaced the rest of the field, with Will Campbell finished a close second in that class to Ryan Skalls, who won in his first week out on the big track.

College Gridiron

College students aren't like normal people. They have to play the weird sports that nobody else wants to play. But since coming over as a niche sport from Bedistan a number of years ago, the public school students took to the sport more and more, differentiating themselves from the uneducated masses as much as possible. And after a number of years, the college game has reached respectability, with an organized season, and, of course, results.

Lacking a postseason, the team on top of the table won it all- and, amazing, the Casaran Naval Academy stood on the top on the land at the end of the year, carrying strong wins over Army and Hillan through to be the first season champions.

"We're confident our endurance carried us through a number of games." Brett Yinan, Coach of the Navy team, said to the press after the final game against Karino.

While the images of rather unmuscular Casaran college students wearing pads brought a few snickers from uninterested sports media, the following on TV rose to a high pitch as the season continued, particularly on campuses and among alumni.

Talks about a possible postseason arrangement among the athletic branch of the National Association of Student Unions, organizing body for National-level intercollegiate sport, were progressing as representatives of the schools tried to hammer out a method of settling a champion without substantially increasing the length of the season. The group quickly reaffirmed it's commitment that any person should not be offered funds to attend a university on the merit of their playing ability, as they have in a number of other sports- far more unlikely in the case of Gridiron Football than others, as no youth programs exist to take players from.

QHL 1940 Season (Regular Season Jan 4th- March 23rd. Playoffs began March 27th)

The ingaugural Season of the Qazox Hockey League, brought upon its win in the 4th World Cup of Hockey, and possible bid to host the 6th WC of Hockey, began its first season with 9 teams, as Gothika's franchise failed to meet mininum season ticket holding standards (5,000). Gothika did meet the mininum for the 2nd season, and will begin play in 1941.
The QHL plays 3 20-minute periods and a 10-minute OT. If teams are tied after OT, then a Best of 5 Shootout determines the winner. If still tied after Best of 5 Shootout, then shootout will continue until a winner is determined. In the Playoffs, OT is sudden death with 20-minute periods. A regulation, OT or Shootout win is worth 2 points, while a Shoot-out loss is worth 1 point. No points are given for an OT loss. The playoffs all are best of 5 with the top 4 teams facing off in the semifinals, with the winners playing for the Grant Cup, named after League Founder, Horace J. Grant.
