On 6 December 2007, the nation of Uberuberdeutschland underwent a great civil war as Imperium Scientium struggled for independence. In the ensuing chaos, a popular revolution began in Uberuberberlin. Thousands of workers took to the streets demanding a change in the government to socialism. The Uberuberdeutsch government sent an army to crush the revolt. When the revolt was put down, the icy north region of Uberuberdeutschland revolted and declared independence. Millions of people fled across the Uberuberdeutsch border to the new nation of Hofkauzern. The Uberuberdeutsch government was too preoccupied with the war against the Imperium Scientium to diver forces to defeat the northern revolutionaries. Hofkauzern's independence was assured without warfare.

The people demanded a strong guiding hand to assure the perpetuation of their new welfare state, and His Unholiness Wilhelm von Hofkauzern was the perfect candidate. His Unholiness was granted the title of His Unholiness the Emperor of the Sovereign Nation of Hofkauzern. Once in power, His Unholiness abolished voting rights and fashioned himself a dictator. After his abolition of voting rights, there was some unrest among the populace, so he created a new body, the National Assembly. However, he banned the Pacifist Party and Environmentalist Party. Also, the Assembly has no real political power; it was merely created to deceive the people into thinking that they actually had power. It is mostly dominated by His Unholiness's personal party, the Nationalist Union.

On 7 December, the political situation generally calmed down, but there was an uprising by supporters of the former Environmenalist Party, who attempted to interrupt Hofkauzern transportation channels. This uprising was put down, and those who participated are awaiting sentencing, which will be personally conducted by His Unholiness... The new nation also fortified its radical socialist background by setting further restrictions on free enterprise, virtually abolishing it.

Workers Strike and Day of Blood

Hofkauzern authorities have reported a strike of the retail working class in the city of Wilhelmsburg. Several hundred workers unexpectedly reported substandard wages and began a massive strike. "We are the backbone of [Hofkauzern]," one union leader said as the government negotiated with employers. In a surprise maneuver, His Unholiness granted concessions to the workers and removed the last vestiges of a capitalistic economy by ordering a mass execution of all employers throughout his realm. "This is a glorious day for Hofkauzern," said one worker observing a line of tanks approaching the National Industrial Plant in the capital of Apokalypseburg to arrest the employers and board.

The employers, along with the Environmentalist militants "Two Wheels Good, Four Wheels Bad" and over one million "traitors" were executed in what is being called "the Massacre of the Century." His Unholiness has labeled it "The Day of Blood" and made it Hofkauzern's national holiday.

His Unholiness has devised a new method for executions that the Minister of Death guarantees will be "immensely painful and exciting to watch." It is labeled the "Eviscerum." Individuals subjected to it are immersed in a boiling mixture of the flesh and blood of those who preceded them in death. Deep incisions are made in their sides with torture devices, allowing their entrails to spill out of their body. Their flesh is peeled from their bones, which are ground into a fine powder. All the while, needles are injected into their brains, providing them with life support and guaranteeing they survive to endure all the pain. The execution is completed when the skull of the victim is crushed, along with the brain inside. The corpse is then liquified for the next victim to be immersed in. The Eviscerum was first tested today on Konrad Licorish, leader of Two Wheels Good, Four Wheels Bad to great applause from the general population. Over a million people came to watch the execution of Hizkal Nusenberg, president of the National Industrial Plant. "We can truly consider ourselves free today!" one worker said of the execution. The Eviscerum has been adopted by the National Assembly as the national execution method of Hofkauzern.

Attempted Coup

On 8 December at approximately 6:00 AM, a terrorist organization known as the "Hofkauzern Liberation Front" staged an attack at the Imperial Fortress in Apokalypseburg in an attempt to depose His Unholiness. Seven or eight members delivered a message to a large audience massed before the Imperial Fortress promising "liberty, equality and freedom from oppression." Fortunately, this demonstration caught the attention of the Death Corps members stationed at the Fortress, who arrested the Liberation Front Members, who were sent to the Eviscerum. Also arrested were tens of thousands of suspect members. All were sent to the Eviscerum. Free speech against the government was unanimously outlawed by the National Assembly.

Organ Donation in the Empire

The Minister of Sorrow yesterday oversaw the ratification of a new bill to aid the imploded economy. This bill provided money for those willing to sell their organs to hospitals and has unfortunately led to increased corruption in the higher levels of the Nationalist Union, which is ever increasing its presence on the Imperial stage. Donations will now be provided free of charge as part of the Empire's new universal healthcare system, which it has been able to establish as a result of the increased income from the recent ratification of the organ donation bill.

Tensions with Uberuberdeutschland Build

In other news, tensions with Uberuberdeutschland hit an all-time high as Hofkauzern opened its first-ever nuclear power plant to the protesting voices of the Oppressed Peoples of Uberuberdeutschland.

New Taxation Laws

On 9 Dec, a mass of protesters gathered at the Imperial Fortress in Apokalypseburg to request lowering of taxation. His Unholiness ruled in favor of shifting the weight of the tax to the wealthy, increasing it to a full one hundred percent. All revenue gained by the upper classes is now being diverted to the government. However, His Unholiness did not lighten the burden of the poor, in fact raising it from fifty to fifty-three percent. The mass of workers is reminded, however, that the government is diverting much of its budget to their cause (nearly thirty percent). The economy is strengthening rapidly, with the Hofkauzern virtual monetary unit increasing in value by five percent daily. The new taxes effects are positive to the economy. Those unwilling to pay will be sent to the Eviscerum.

New Laws in Organ Donation

The government has also ratified a law that states that organs shall be taken from corpses without approval in a continuation of yesterday's motion to allow sale of organs. The organs must be in working order. Many new rights and funds are being granted to the nation's increasingly stronger free universal healthcare system. Hofkauzern's mostly young population does not complain, but older and ill individuals are protesting the new law, claiming it virtually abolishes the powers of a last will. "Those bastards are making it legal to desecrate my corpse...What next? Next they'll be confiscating all of our property after we die," said one individualon his march to the Eviscerum. The government is strengthening the rights of the useful an sacrificing the rights of the useless.

Uberuberdeutsch Army in Hofkauzern

An Uberuberdeutsch army earlier today was deployed to Hofkauzern. His Unholiness has declared this act intolerable and labeled it as a declaration of war. A new lode of uranium has been discovered in the far north of Hofkauzern, and members of the National Assembly are proposing the beginning of a nuclear weapons program for the currently weak nation. As Hofkauzern is not part of the United Nations, it is not bound to obey any nonproliferation treaties.

His Unholiness Himself is scheduled to deliver a speech of great importance tomorrow, which will be recorded in this forum.

WAR

The Uberuberdeutsch army in Hofkauzern was today fired upon by the Hofkauzern Death Corps and regular army members after the Uberuberdeutsch leadership failed to accept an ultimatum delivered by Hofkauzern, demanding the immediate withdrawal of all Uberuberdeutsch forces. The first day of the war is not going well, however; Uberuberdeutsch armies have cut as far into Hofkauzern as seven kilometers in places.

Execution of Activists

The Animal Liberation Front active in allied Imperium Scientium today attempted to attack Hofkauzern. This attempt paralleled the protest at the Imperium several days ago, with large amounts of livestock being freed. His Unholiness has elected to permanently ban such organizations and abolish their rights to free speech. Strangely, the government later that day allowed radical fascist protests, which had been outlawed in neighboring nations. This has resulted in an influx of National Socialists supporting "the Northern Race" into Hofkauzern. The animal rights activists, along with all suspect members of the liberation front, were sent to the Eviscerum.

His Unholiness Delivers a Speech

As has been said yesterday, His Unholiness Himself has spoken to the people of Hofkauzern and to the Uberuberdeutsch people. However, the speech was not of as great importance as was believed.

"People of the sovereign state of Hofkauzern,
We have arrived at a critical point
in our nation's history.

It appears as though the flesh abominations
in the swineland of Uberuberdeutschland
have initiated an unprovoked attack
to destroy the sovereignty
of our realm.

This speech was followed by a playing of the Hofkauzern national anthem.

Uberuberdeutsch Attack Repelled

The Uberuberdeutsch advance into Hofkauzern has been stopped dead and the enemy has begun a disorderly retreat from Hofkauzern. The enemy troops had landed in two groups, one in the east and one in the west. The western group consisted of five battalions of ten thousand men each. Three of these battalions cut approximately eleven kilometers into Hofkauzern territiory. All the while, Hofkauzern troops were stationed in the surrounding mountain ranges. Only one battalion was engaging the enemy, and this army was orderly retreating with the three attacking battalions in pursuit.

Meanwhile, the two remaining enemy battalions were securing the shore. Three Hofkauzern battalions descended from the mountains an ambushed the enemy, inflicting six thousand casualties while losing only a thousand troops. The remaining fourteen thousand or so enemy forces surrendered their weapons to a force over twice the size of their own. Weaponless and useless, the prisoners of war were sent to the capital to face the Eviscerum. Their munitions and weapons were confiscated and employed by the Hofkauzern forces.

The victorious Hofkauzern armies began pursuit of the three battalions that had as of yet been driving back a lone Hofkauzern battle group. This battle group was ordered to parry the enemy attack to allow the advancing Hofkauzern troops to catch up. As these three battalions closed in from behind, the enemy's right flanks were decimated by forces stationed in the mountains. The enemy was encircled and forced to surrender. However, this phase of the battle was very costly. Over seven thousand Hofkauzern troops were lost to the enemy's approximately nine thousand.

All the while, a second enemy force had landed in the mountainous east and was making its way down a glacial valley. This time, only four Uberuberdeutsch battalions had landed, and Hofkauzern troops lie in wait in the mountains. Two enemy group were ordered to march on Apokalypseburg while the other two secured current Uberuberdeutsch positions.

A third landing force of one Uberuberdeutsch battalion was deployed even further to the east to combat a Hofkauzern group enemy sattelites had spotted in the mountains. This enemy plan was an utter failure. Over eight thousand Uberuberdeutsch troops were mown down by the Hofkauzern machine gun nests. Two thousand Hofkauzern soldiers were killed in the fighting. One of the battalions instructed to attack the capital was diverted through a glacial pass near the summit of Mount Apocalypse to reinforce the desparate force in the deep east. Here they encountered a Hofkauzern army and engaged for several minutes to a stalemate before continuing their forward drive amidst heavy fire from the Hofkauzern troops. Unfortunately for the enemy, the overwhelmed, isolated battalion in the far east had believed that reinforcements were not going to be sent; the Uberuberdeutsch military command would not permit the sacrifice of further troops to relieve them. However, reinforcements were indeed coming and the remnants of the retreating enemy unit were scattered. The reinforcing unit was now trapped between two Hofkauzern forces and fell into disarray, beginning a disorderly retreat among heavy gunfire in the direction of Apokalypseburg.

Meanwhile, the troops at the shore securing the Uberuberdeutsch position met a similar fate to their western counterparts. They were encircled by Hofkauzern forces, but, fearing the Eviscerum, they did not surrender. All were given posthumous awards by the Uberuberdeutsch government.

Atheism named official "religion"

The National Assembly of Hofkauzern unanimously named atheism the official religion of the nation following requests by some of the people for "spiritual guidance." This led to the government outlawing all religion, following the example set by Imperium Scientium several days earlier.

New Security System

The Hofkauzern government today approved implementation of a new security system, requiring all citizens be implanted for their safety. These implants will be used to keep track of criminals and make lawbreaking virtually impossible.

Enemy Masses near Capital

The surviving members of Uberuberdeutschland's disastrous invasion of Hofkauzern are now massing to the south of Apokalypseburg. It is likely that at least a quarter will die due to an approaching snowstorm. The enemy's morale has been crushed, but they have not yet surrendered or attempted retreat of the island. Their supply lines are virtually nonexistent. Artillery bombardment of several Uberuberdeutsch encampments began early this morning. Air stikes will be initiated after the passing of the storm. Several airplanes will be sent tomorrow to provide air support for Imperium Scientium's forces in Science City, where the battle is at a standstill. Neither side appears able to gain a significant amount of ground. Hopefully, the aerial assault will lessen pressures on Imperium forces. The National Assembly has voted (again unanimously) to begin the creation of an invasion force to attack Uberuberdeutschland from the east. It is expected to be trained and deployed in several days.

National Assembly votes on new budget

The National Assembly ratified today the budget for the upcoming month. Despite the war, most spending will be diverted into social welfare. "Economic equality is the idea upon which Hofkauzern was founded," said one Assembly leader in response to the new legislature. The government loosened its grip on its people's personal lives further still in a new bill that provided additional rights to the people, including the legalization of euthanasia. The Nationalist Party is beginning to seek different goals than His Unholiness. The people are generally hoping to avert civil conflict.

ECONOMIC COLLAPSE

The economy of Hofkauzern has completely collapsed as a result of the nation's attempts to become an iron-fist socialist state. All economic progress has been lost and heavy inflation has ensued. The income tax rate has increased by 23%, peaking at 86%. All private ownership has been abolished. The gross domestic product has fallen in quantites of billions and foreign trade is only used to bring in emergency supplies. Hofkauzern is becoming a self-sufficient socialist state, exporting more goods than it imports. Currently, the nation's major concern is that the government is taking up too much funding, absorbing 48% of funds. Corruption must be reduced.

War Update

There is currently minimal activity in the war against Uberuberdeutschland other than armament of troops. However, the emergency state of the economy is delaying armament efforts.

Uranium Lode Exploited

Vast quantities of uranium have been found under the Northern Natural Preserve, a vast tundra area which the government previously protected. The act that protected the land was declared null and void by the National Assembly, and the uranium mining process has begun. The enrichment process is beginning in several remote undisclosed locations. The production of nuclear weaponry is expected to become possible within the next several months, though most of the uranium is being used to power Hofkauzern industry. Uranium mining has overtaken retail as Hofkauzern's leading economic activity, and the previous uranium black market has been dissolved by government controls.

Improvement in the Military

Earlier, Hofkauzern High Command requested greater funds for the military, and the National Assembly granted that request, diverting vast levels of funding out of social welfare and into military defense. The Assembly then ratified the Professional Armies Act, which created a new non-elite military force called the Legion of Hatred. This is Hofkauzern's first military unit in which membership is not reserved to only the very best soldiers. However, the Legion is nevertheless a professionally trained army. Before being sent to the field, recruits must undergo intense training, particularly in precision. The Legion of Hatred has quickly grown to become Hofkauzern's largest fighting force, numbering two million strong. The uranium enrichment process has greatly progressed. The time for the construction of Hofkauzern's first nuclear weapon is close at hand. Uberuberdeutschland, with no nuclear weapons of its own, will easily be crushed by Hofkauzern. Already, the vast Legion, after destroying the Uberuberdeutsch contingent near Apokalypseburg, has been deployed to Uberuberdeutschland and has come within twenty kilometers of Uberuberberlin. Victory is at hand.

Era of Political Instability

Hofkauzern, though a socialist dictatorship, is a nation that supports free speech. However, His Unholiness proposed a bill to weaken the reople's freedom of expression. The National Assembly, led by the Nationalist Union, acted in open defiance of His Unholiness and reversed the bill, eliminating all previous limits on speech. This new policy, called Früschprakk in the tongue of Hofkauzern, has ushered in a new era of political instability. His Unholiness ordered the Death Corps to the National Assembly in Apokalypseburg to arrest the dissidents and restore His laws. However, in Wilhelmsburg, the diversion of welfare funds to the military resulted in a massive uprising, and His Unholiness was forced to recall His Death Corps and crush the revolt. As a result of increased freedom of expression, the people of Apokalypseburg have recently taken to the streets demanding voting rights. This demand will likely have no results but a brutal massacre.

The people currently are in fear of a civil war with the Assembly and its supporters on one side and the Death Corps under His Unholiness on the other.

Due to political turmoil, Hofkauzern has been unable to make known events that have come to pass. The probability of civil war is increasing. Hofkauzern is trapped in a state between "psychotic dictatorship," which His Unholiness is attempting to establish over the nation, and "iron fist socialism," the current desire of the people and Nationalist Union. The United Nations has labeled this state a "corrupt dictatorship" to the outrage of both the people and government. "The government takes almost no money for itself," said one citizen in Apokalypseburg. "Most of the taxes that are collected are used for promoting universal healthcare, social welfare, and education, and the rest are invested in boosting the state-run industry and military quality. The administration takes almost no money for itself, and because of our classification as a 'corrupt dictatorship,' it appears as if almost forty percent of the government's budget is absorbed by corrupt leaders." In response to this, the National Assembly has passed new legislation that makes it illegal for government officials to use money for themselves.

Vast amounts of money are also being poured into a new space program. Hofkauzern has built several interplanetary starships, but it currently lacks the funds necessary for interstellar or intergalactic travel. The govenment is being careful not to invest too much money in the space program. In addition, military quality is on the rise. The National Assembly passed new legislation allowing the military to train soldiers from birth. This new law will create a new elite army within several years. (By then, of course, civil war will likely be imminent, if it has not already begun.) Free speech is still a right of the people, and they are protecting this right, preventing executives from repealing the law that gave it to them several years ago. Hofkauzern has also withdrawn from the Alliance of Dictators after it was labeled as a Nazi state by Alliance leaders such as Lamvia Terra. Though Hofkauzern is a National Socialist nation, it is not Nazi. The government opposes corporatism and religion, aspects of a fascist regime. In addition, the workers' unions are given power over their businesses, which is an aspect of Communism, to which Nazis are firmly opposed. To protest this undeserved label, Hofkauzern has withdrawn from the Alliance and has been relocated in the USSR, a socialist/Communist region.

Several days ago, spurred by the National Assembly, the people of Apokalypseburg took to the streets, seizing weaponry and marching against the Death Corps. The ensuing battle resulted in the first-ever loss for the elite Death Corps. Outnumbered at perhaps a ratio of a thousand to one, the Death Corps was forced to retreat to the gates of the Imperial Fortress. The masses received the support of Hofkauzern's regular army (Legion of Hatred), which conquered Wilhelmsburg from a small contingent of Imperial Death Corps troops stationed there. The National Assembly then passed new legislation, abolishing the dictatorial powers of His Unholiness and allocating funds to scientific research and social progress. The workers of Apokalypseburg have seized ownership of the city's many factories from the state, ending the command economy.

Now two factions clash for domination in Hofkauzern. The National Assembly, supporting Communism and the rights of the people, is commanding the Legion of Hatred and has scored several victories in the initial phases of the civil war. Against the Assembly stands His Unholiness the Emperor, seeking to establish his traditional totalitarian control over the people of Hofkauzern. His military force consists of Hofkauzern's elite - the Death Corps and the newly commissioned Legion of Anguish, the soldiers Hofkauzern has been training from birth, taught above everything else to obey their Emperor. The war has resulted in a reclassification of Hofkauzern as a "democratic socialist" nation, despite its complete lack of democracy. However, the civil war has resulted in greater political and civil freedoms for the people.

1 January
The "impregnable" gates of the Imperial Fortress gave way several hours ago, and a horde of citizens has poured into the Entrance Hall. This event has followed scores of victories by the people and Legion of Hatred in the recent revolution. The Legion virtually decimated the Death Corps stationed in Apokalypseburg, resulting in a great victory for the National Assembly. It is apparent that the Emperor has lost the civil war and the Unholy Empire's abolition is imminent. It remains to be seen whether the Emperor will relinquish his control over Hofkauzern or be arrested by the masses that have entered the Fortress. Outside Apokalypseburg, however, the situation looks bleak for the revolutionary Assembly. The Legion of Anguish and Death Corps have reasserted their control over the countryside and threaten to attack the capital.

2 January

It appears as though the Emperor has escaped Apokalypseburg. The mob that entered the Fortress has been dispersed by the revolutionary army, which wanted to capture the Emperor and feared that the bloodthirsty citizens would kill him rather than arresting him. The army then surveyed the Fortress carefully, confirming that the Emperor was no longer there. The Emperor is probably hiding in the frozen mountains of Hofkauzern's barren north, say authorities. The Death Corps and Legion of Anguish have surrendered, effectively ending the war. They will continue to serve the new Hofkauzern nation. The victory of socialism over totalitarianism in Hofkauzern calls to memory the foundation of the nation. Hofkauzern was founded to become a people's socialist empire, and it has never been closer to achieving this goal. The revolution of the National Assembly has been a success.

After the capture of the Emperor of Hofkauzern, the National Assembly has negotiated and decided to enact new legislation creating autonomous regions out of the vast unsettled areas in Hofkauzern's north. Each region will have somewhat differing laws but all will be subject to the central authority at Apokalypseburg. The Emperor will retain his full dictatorial power over one of these regions, Hofreich. In addition, he will remain a limited monarch, bound to the National Assembly's legislature. The National Assembly has decided against writing a constitution for Hofkauzern so it can retain flexibility. "After all," said one delegate, "the people of Hofkauzern are always a check on power. If they refuse to acknowledge a law, then the law serves no purpose." The National Assembly has also ratified a new spending bill, beginning the construction of orbital weaponry. Construction on a defense satellite system has already begun.

The International Empire of Hofkauzern has undergone radical reform in the National Assembly. New laws were passed granting greater individual freedoms to citizens of Hofkauzern. This loosening of government control has led to a step toward genuine Communism and stimulated the nation's working class. This has led to greater production and efficiency, which, in turn, triggered an economic explosion. The Hofkauzern VMU, originally set at $.03 but inflated in value to less than $.01, has now increased in value to over $.20. For a developing radical socialist nation, this progress, which occurred over a five-year period, is considerable. The International Empire of Hofkauzern has also been reclassified as an "iron-fist socialist" nation.

New Allies and Enemies in the North

The International Empire has conducted a treaty of full alliance with the neighboring Dominion of Vraine. To increase relations, the House of Hofkauzern (which holds no power outside Hofreich) has been unified with the Dominion's leadership. In addition, the threat of war with the Northern Coalition has forced the two nations together. The Northern Coalition is an alliance formed with the purpose of opposing the dominance of Hofkauzern and Vraine in the northern region of the world of these nations. This alliance consists of the totalitarian Grand Duchy of Vusch, the immensely corrupt Free Land of Tlusch, and the radically nationalistic, genocidal Empire of All Ulnats. A state of undeclared warfare is in existence between Hofkauzern and these nations.
