NEW! If you would like to have more than three high performers listed, see here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13276278&postcount=86).

= = = = = =

OOC: This thread is intended as a list of international records, similar to the Guiness Book. As soon as NSwiki is back up, it can be wikified, but for now this thread will have to do.

Now, creating such a list of records is potentially tricky, so how do we keep it fair? A few simple rules. You may post up to two international records for all your nations put together. Of those, one may be a "major" record, while the other should be a more quirky, unusual, "minor" record. A record can be... well, more or less anything. Especially the "minor" ones. Examples could include "greatest number of children produced", "longest fingernails", "greatest number of cherries eaten in half an hour" or "greatest amount of beer inhaled through the nostrils". Anything you can think of.

You can also post one "runner-up" - i.e., someone (or something) from your nation who/which comes second, internationally, to a record posted by someone else.

You can give additional information about record-holders if you like, and/or (once NSwiki is back up) include a link to their NSwiki article.

Here are mine:

IC:
Ariddian Isles
*tallest Human woman alive: Julie Lane (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/julie_lane.html): 2m27 (7’5’’). Julie Lane lives in West Ariddia, where she works as a help desk employee at a police station.
*biggest sandcastle: 961cm (31'6''), built by Mohammed and Anne-Sophie Evans. Mohammed and Anne-Sophie Evans are husband and wife, and live in West Ariddia.

OOC: For my "major" record, I took "tallest Human woman alive". Given the different species in NS, it seems logical to distinguish between species for records involving height, weight and other bodily characteristics. If someone wants the tallest Human alive to be a man, that record is still available to snatch up (although if someone posts the tallest Human man alive being shorter than 2m27, Lane will be tallest Human of either gender, by default). Tallest Human man and tallest Human woman in history also remain available. And if you want your nation to have the world's tallest female gnome or sentient mouse, feel free. ;)

Candelaria And Marquez
*Longest nose (historical): The world’s longest nose is believed to have been possessed by one Samuel Pafford which was measured at 25.13 cm (or almost 10") in Allemali, the Candelarias, in 1835. Pafford became an important symbol for the port city and the major attraction of the islands’ freak shows, though some doubt remains over the veracity of the claim; with recent historians suggesting Pafford may have in fact have lost his nose in a paddle steamer accident as a teenager and instead worn a series of parsnips attached to his face for the nine years he spent in the Candelarias prior to his death aged 29. As such, Pafford also has claims on the record for the Longest Time Spent with Root Vegetable Affixed to Face (Human).

*Longest board game ever played: 805 hours, fifteen minutes. A game of Smith & Jurkowski’s Oligopsony was started by a Mr. and Mrs. Joe and Charlotte Pettersson and their daughters Hebe and Georgette on Sunday February 12th 1989 in Rose of Sharon, Candelaria And Marquez. It came to and end with victory for Hebe 792 days later on April 20th 1991, with an average of sixty-one minutes having been spent playing every day in that period. The Pettersons have since divorced.

The Populist Party-Social Democratic Party (PPop-PDS) coalition led by Ottavio Micarelli won over the Nationalist Party-Centrist Party-Catholic Social Party-Libertarian Party (PN-PS-PSC-PL) bloc headed by Orlando Nicoletano. The control of Parliament went to PPop-PDS, 113-112, after the PPop won the seat of Tiberio di Cantabrica by a single vote, 75,783 to 75,782.

On January 4, 2002, the car he was driving fell down the ravine at Bismantova Pass, 14 miles out from the hamlet of San Clemente di Torranica, Brutland. He was reported as missing a week later, and was not found until April 14, 2002, when a hydrologist noticed his car up the cliff from the Acquazula Creek. He was revived when the embalmer cut on his carotid artery for embalming. He appeared to had not sustained significant injury from the fall or the suspended animation.

Longest Recitation of an Epic Poem- 3 weeks, 2 days, 5 hours, 4 minutes
Saille Kullar, Korsahad, Snefaldia
A Mr. Saille Kullar of Korsahad in Allasha is recognized as not only having been one of the most famous public storytellers in Allasha, but also as having continuously recited the longest epic poem in Snefaldian history. Born in 1724, Kullar was raised in the family tradition of epic poetry, and in 1755 commenced the recitation of Daati Salloh Menaksh Abad while standing on a streetcorner in the capital of the Allashan region, and did not stop for 3 weeks, 2 days, 5 hours, 4 minutes. He was kept alive by a group of watchers who fed him during parts of the story where characters ate. He died three days after he finished the poem from sleep deprivation.

It is believed that the poem, which has never been written down, was originally about a warrior and his quest for true love, but at the 1 week mark Mr. Kullar likely improvised and increasingly incorporated the fevered hallucinations he was having into the plot. This would explain the appearance of a half-human half-cow figure that spoke Farsi and spewed pea soup from the eyes at the end of the story.

Longest Operating Restaurant in a human nation -2500 years
Soong's, Pholimjung, Snefaldia
Soong's restaurant in Pholimjung claims to be the longest operating restaurant in a human nation, running almost continuously for 2500 years. Originally begun by a Bajeong hunter named Amyong Soong in 500 bce selling smoked game, the expansion of the business has been traced through the Bajeong Guea period to 500ce, and then sporadically to 1302. Aatem Nal officials collected financial records in 1405 dating back to 702ce, and the restuarant was found to be still operating in 1505, owned by a Soong-yang-I who claimed to be the direct descendant of Amyong Soong. The business expanded and developed for the next 500 years, and in 2005 was Soong Kwang-u, the current owner, was given an award by the Tuhran Bel for his dedication.

The restaurant is also in the running for "most cases of food poisoning caused by a single dish."

World's oldest human whorehouse - 2000 years

Current name: Akbah's harem
First name: Shem Sallah

A whorehouse which has been running since Jesus was born under different owners under different eras in Jeruselem. Situated in west side of the city of Jerusalem, this notorious place has had many interesting employees including Mary Magalene and the birthplace of the notorious Dallas girls. It was Dazza Dallas's first home. The place only employs the "best" girls in the city and it does not employ sub-standard looking women. The place is never shut down due to high ranking officials using the secretly for their own pleasures. It is not a cheap place to frequent due to high prices but it was never a place for poor people. Some ex-employees of this place have recently gone on better careers later.

We would challenge the record. The Yalyang Hanp has been operating roughly the same length of time in the region of Bae, only going under a few years during wartime or particularly hard times (no pun intended). Some Snefaldians like to say the phrase "happy ending" originated in the Yalyang, but that's most definitely an exaggeration.

Shortest functioning football (soccer) stadium - Victory Stadium
4th June 1998 to 4th August 1998

Built for the Jeru FC football team, the Victory stadium only operated for 2 months before declared being unsafe for public use. Most of damage was caused by one night when a group of soldiers, drunk from a foray at a locals strip club and got kicked out, entered the stadium to play some football drunk. But they found you can't play football drunk and decided to throw things around including grenades. The damage was so severe, the stadium had to be stop being used. Needless to say Jeru FC team members were not impressed and they now play home games at the Tel Aviv Sharks stadium due to generous nature of their former coach Dazza Dallas.

Date and Time of the record: 1st of April 2000, at 21:33:12 (Cafundéu time) - program starts at 20:30.

Nº of televisions on the channel: 8,682,503,911 (more than 8 billion televisions - from all around the world)

Why: a man had the chance of winning ten million vintéms. All he had to do was to travel to 10 countries and take a photo with the political leader of each country. In that day's program, the man was returning from his trip, and had to show the presenter the photos to win the money. He was able to take 8 photos, and won 8 million vintéms. Many people followed the man's trip on the television, and were anxious to know how it would end.

Most Slippery Floor

Where: Santo Expedito's Hospital, in Submiria (Cafundéu)

The floor is slippery because the hospital is located in a flooded area of the city. At some times of the day, water invades the first floor of the hospital. Also, the cleaners are obsessed with cleaning the floor, so it's extremely slippery. Approximately 78 people slide on the floor everyday, and some have to stay in the hospital because of that.

Mikitivity has a few museum short lines that have working steam locomotives that are used tourism / education. Even modern tech nations will still use them.

A suggestion would be to make the nation to be the longest running operating commercial or public line that still relies primarily on steam locomotives. That would essentially be like how I'm claiming that my nation's Eule Fluglinien is the oldest running airship line ... this doesn't preclude others from having airships, but it does suggest that the airship service is really focused on this "older" form of technology.

Some records from OMGTKK:

Biggest cinematic flop ever:

"Spank Me Scotty!" (2000), starring Antigone Morgan (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/antigone_morgan.html) (now the vice president). It wasn't the first comedy with a $500 million budget just for promotion, but it is the first to register a net loss of $684 million. Needless to say, it was a fatal career mistake for Morgan to take on a role as a militant secret-agent nun who posed as a kinky brothel employee for the espionage arm of an ultra-fundamentalist group of fanatical Catholics, and she was never seen in pictures again as a result. Some say her subsequent election to second-in-command was God's punishment to the Kennyites for creating a society capable of such horrid crimes against cinematic art, but others say it was just a matter of the Federal Republic's obscenely high horny-guys-per-capita rating.

Largest Flag ever made:

At two miles wide and .89 miles high, 85-year-old Bethel Monavidez's creation, crocheted entirely out of lion-mane hair over a three-year period, was intended as a touching patriotic gift to the nation she so loved. But the federal government had other plans for the mammoth national banner, which Monavidez donated to the Department of the Interior. It was used as a giant canopy to hide a depressingly impoverished Paradise City neighborhood during a 1981 international conference on poverty relief. Stupid Kennyites; the covered area was inhabited mostly by Xt'Tap natives, who defiantly burned the flag, destroying dozens of buildings and killing 85 of their own people.

Only Nation Still employing Steam Traction
Since its founding in 1922, New Britain has stuck with steam locomotives on railways, and is now the only present home of the LNER.

Empire Railways wishes to formerly challenge this record. 3,578 kilometres of our network is still solely steam operated; with a further 5,540 kilometres with steam usage in combination with diesel. We do admit that much of the steam operation is in our narrow gauge network; or on our Western Islands where the axle loads cannot handle our diesel fleet. However, we feel that our argument means that the record cannot stand

Most racial slurs in the common lexicon

With racial slurs being considered a healthy form of harmless expression in the Federated Segments, combined with the Segments' extremely broad range of influencing cultures, there are in common use at least 150 thousand different racial slurs in 180 different origin languages, with at least 25 thousand of those from 16 origin languages being approximately universal knowledge. There are ethnic slurs for almost any conceivable demographic, and new ones are constantly invented by people actually trying to offend or shock (and quickly being overused into harmlessness by people just trying to be friendly).

Largest Krill Ever Captured In The Wild

Daniel Bloom Cindeyyun, fisherman on Cinder once caught a krill, apparently a mutated member of Meganyctiphanes norvegica, over a meter long (107.2 cm). The "warcats" which eventually entered service with the Commonwealth Army were around half Fluffy's weight, and saw some success as a terror weapon during the Canales invasion in 1003 AC.
Fluffy herself did not enter military service, and died in 1005 AC in the Obsidian Event.

Longest Train in Pre-Modern Times not Worn for a Wedding or Coronation – 262 feet

The Countess Vaudriennë Arundôme á Vernaùndel zée Vaulême, a sixteenth century Xirniumite libertine, was reported to have worn on several separate occasions a dress of satin brocade with a 262-foot train (almost eighty metres).

The creation weighed in excess of seventy kilograms (not including elaborate headdress, rings and jewellery, and cartwheel ruff edged in lace and embroidery). Its skirt was heavily ruched and ruffled, with the fabric encrusted with jewels, gems and pearls and woven with gold and silver thread plundered from the New World.

Taken separately, they are the 2nd and 3rd longest Railway Bridges in the world.

However the 2 bridges might be considered as a single Bridge, as only 1300 ft (396.24 m) of the bridge is on land. If considered a single bridge, then the total length of the bridge is 76.03 miles (122.36 km). This/ese bridge(s) is/are also vehicular bridge(s) as well.

Errinundera
06-12-2007, 07:59
Highest Human Dwelling in a Tree

The lyptoo family in Fanny Moo in the Ootopia district of the Plateau province in Errinundera currently claim, at 131.7 metres, to dwell higher above the ground than anybody else. They reside in a vigorously healthy Shining Gum that soars to a total of 156 metres.

There is considerable competition among tree dwellers to better this record, however attempts usually end in disaster. It is estimated that 64 people have been killed in pursuit of the record. In almost all cases the tree branches have been unable to support the weight of the house.

The precarious situation of the lyptu family is amply demonstrated by the absence of any treehouses on the branches below them.

Most Frequently Torched Parliament House

Since its completion in 1945 (following the 1941 Liberation) there have been 771 attempts to set alight the Parliament House in First Creek Falls, the "capital" of Errinundera.

Arson is considered a basic human right in Errinundera where a corporation or government body is deemed to be behaving in an egregious manner. Magistrates have always interpreted "egregious" very broadly - so broadly that no-one has ever been convicted of arson of a building. (Trees are, of course, another matter.)

The figure of 771 does not include accidentally started fires. There is some contention whether the fire of 16 April 2073 could be considered arson. The perpetrator in question intended to set the Parliament on fire, however got into an altercation with some homeless people who were warming themselves with a fire in a rubbish bin on the front steps. In the ensuing ruckus the inciendary devices were accidentally ignited killing all involved but doing little damage to the building.

Parliament House repairs consume about 3.5% of the annual national budget.

Party Name: Christian Democrat Party
Number of Party Votes attained: 781
Percentage of Total Votes: 0.000000547%
Year: 1932
Brief Description: The Christian Democrat Party had been founded in 1930 out of concern by several outlying Christian communities, and was expected to be a complete flop in the 1932 election. To everyones surprise, Robert Henderson, their candidate for the seat of Mackay, succeeded in winning the electorate (it has been suggested that he was a spoiler candidate, with the sitting Nationalist MP also being called Robert Henderson). The Grand Shipping Canal connecting Navarre and Port Blanche runs for a distance of 1,250 miles with minimum dimensions of 410 metres width, 45 metres safe navigating draft, and maximum allowable speed of 10 kts, meaning even the fastest transitions take around four days. Using the Canal shaves, however, between two and four weeks off journey times required to circumnavigate the Mainland continent.

Minor: Largest movie studio backlot in the world

The Freethinker Broadcasting Corporation owns a 13,430 square mile undeveloped ranch in the Pioneer Valley just south of Navarre. This lot is generally used for series based in the outback, extensive stunts, and is often rented out to foreign film companies for used as prehistoric or desert terrain. Its geographic isolation ensures few of the larger native inhabitants pop up for an unexpected visit.

This should enable you all to add as much as you like. ;)

To clarify: Let's say you've posted your two records plus a runner-up, but in addition to that you'd really like someone from your nation to be notable for having survived a fall from a great height, or you'd like a mountain in your nation to be one of the highest in the world. Well, simply post that John Smith or Abdel Mohamed or Amélie Legrand from your country has survived the fall from the third greatest height on record in the world, and that mount Snowy in your country is the world's seventh highest peak.

Longest time spent immersed in water: THIRD: 70 days, 0 hour, 16 minutes. Meals were brought to them in the water. Secure reclining "beds" enabled competitors to sleep with their head above water and most of their body immersed.

Greatest amount of vocabulary mastered by a parrot: FOURTH: approx. 815 words.

Smarty, the aptly named parrot from Ariddia.

Smarty, a grey parrot from the PDSRA, is able to use about 815 words in proper context, responding in conversation and putting words together to form coherent sentences (by creation rather than imitation). In addition, he has invented about 20 words or terms (including "yellow orange" for lemon and "hello box" for telephone).

And then there's the "near miss" record accumulator from West Ariddia:

Alice Grey

http://img222.imageshack.us/img222/641/alicegreytc0.jpg

Alice Grey may seem like a fairly ordinary 16 year-old. She attends secondary school in her surburban home town of Riverview, West Ariddia, and obtains average results. In the evening, she works as a tickets saleswoman at the suburban railway station. But Alice is on a quest to break as many unusual world records as she can. So far, her success rate has been debatable. She has broken into the top ten for a number of odd feats, but has not established any new international records.

Here are her achievements:

* longest time spent balancing on one foot: NINTH (39 hours, 31 minutes). No breaks.
* longest time maintaining a revolving hula-hoop: EIGHTH (19 hours, 2 minutes). No breaks.
* most kumquats eaten in ten minutes: EIGHTH (221, raw, whole, not peeled).
* fastest reading of a six page booklet backwards: SIXTH (11 minutes, 19 seconds). Alice read six pages out loud backwards, pronouncing each word in reverse, starting from the bottom right-hand corner of each page.
* most chocolate squares eaten: SIXTH (486). In a contest of endurance rather than speed, Alice ate 486 chocolate squares (http://img411.imageshack.us/img411/2626/tbdub6.jpg).
* most bananas eaten in ten minutes: FOURTH (93). Alice scoffed a whopping ninety-three bananas in one of her most impressive speed-eating achievements.
* most slugs swallowed alive in five minutes: THIRD (68). Alice’s most bizarre achievement is also the one in which she is highest-ranked, and the one she is most proud of. In front of fascinated and disgusted spectators, she proceded to gobble down sixty-eight live slugs, aided only by one glass of water.

“I’m best at food contests,” Alice said during an interview. “I can eat a lot, and I can eat quickly. I can swallow large amounts in one go, and when I eat my mouth naturally produces a lot of saliva, so that helps. Bananas are my favourite food, so I had practice before doing that. And no, before you ask, I’ve never been sick, and I’ve never had indigestion after a contest. Although I felt a little bit sick after the chocolates. That was a bit silly, and I don’t think I’d do that again.” She smiled.

Alice also holds a purely national record for most Yumbi nutribars (http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/7154/nutribarscj3.jpg) eaten in two minutes (8). This was achieved when business leader (and politician) Liang Jui-te (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/liang_jui_te.html), owner of the Yumbi nutribar trademark, decided to capitalise on Alice's relative fame by employing her in an advertisement.

Are there any achievements she would like to improve on? “All of them!” she told a reporter with a laugh. “But especially the hula-hoop. I think I can do a lot better than eighth, a lot better than nineteen hours. When I get some free time, that’s the one I’m going to be practicing on.”

Other Imperial Records:

Longest section of octuple rail track: THIRD

Line: Ptolemais to Alexandria Line
Section: Ptolemais Central to Ormondville (outer limit of suburban section)
Length of Section: 76.19 kilometres
Brief Description: The Ptolemais to Alexandria Line was originally opened as a full double track line in 1856. The railway revolution resulted in an increase in the size of both Ptolemais and Alexandria, and within thirty years, the line was already suffering from congestion within the Ptolemais and Alexandrian suburban sections. While the line was continually widened, and other efficiency measures proposed, it was usually never enough and within a few years, the track would be congested. In 1949 the government decided to widen the track to eight lines from Ptolemais to Ormondville, with a similar proposal made for the Alexandria to Amberley section. The track was never fully utilised, however, due to electrification of the entire line in 1956. Never again was such a massive project proposed.

Longest period in office by one party in a democracy: FIFTH

Party: The Alexandrian Party/Alexandrian Ptolemais Coalition
Government Name: The Fourth Alexandrian/Alexandrian Ptolemais Coalition Government
Period in Office: 1748 - 1860 (112 years)
Brief Description: After twelve years of a Liberal Government in the 18th Century, the people of the Colony of Alexandria and Ptolemais elected the more conservative Alexandrian Party into office. This was to mark the beginning of 112 years in office, however, this was often with other parties, and was to also mark the beginning of 156 years in Opposition by the Liberal Party. The government would run through twelve Prime Ministers; outlast twenty-six Opposition leaders, and outlive five Kings (the Empire not becoming known as such until the 1860s). It was known as the golden age of the Alexandrian Ptolemais Coalition, and the party never recovered from being beaten by its junior coalition partner, the Nationalist Party, in 1860.

Longest period as the Official Opposition by one party in a democracy: NINTH

Party: The Liberal Party of Alexandrian Ptolemais
Period as Official Opposition: 1768 - 1824 (56 years)
Brief Description: While the Liberal Party had lost the reigns of power in 1748; they were overtaken by the Whig Party in 1764 and for the first time in party history, they were neither the Official Opposition, nor the Government. The 1764 election marked the end of a severe decline for the party, and reconstruction began. In 1768, they managed to increase their vote and pull themselves into being Official Opposition again. While their polling increased throughout the 1770s; even polling at 44.42% in 1776, they never obtained office, and by the 1780s, the party had declined in the face of the supermajorities that the Alexandrian/Nationalist had been able to obtain. Their period as Official Opposition came to a sudden end in 1824 when the Whigs overtook them to become Official Opposition again. For much of the 19th Century, the Whigs and Liberals battled over the title of Official Opposition, although the Liberal Party eventually succeeded in 1868.

Runners-up record

Highest number of heads of state in a year
number: 17 (1975)

Errinundrians don't have a high opinion of national politicians. The "head of state" is elected on an irregular basis by the lower house and is given certain responsibilities as laid down by the constitution. The position was satirically dubbed "Protector of Civic Choice, Economic Participation and the Natural Environment" by the comedian boomb. The ridiculous title so amused Errinundrians that it stuck.

boomb also became the instigator of the 1975 leadership schemozzle. As a joke he ran as mayor of Kanooka Creek and, without campaigning, won in a landslide. As mayor he was entitled to a seat in the national parliament and, without even attending, was elected as "head of state" replacing the unpopular centuld (McKillops Bridge Electoral District # 7) who had been in the position since the previous year.

The joke "head of state" election so amused many members of the national parliament that, over the next 13 sitting days, a new Protector of Civic Choice, Economic Participation and the Natural Environment was elected each day, culminating in the election of the congenital idiot, clioodau, from Bonang Electoral District # 33.

By the time of the election of clioodau many mayoral elections had taken place around Errinundera and a group of "serious" members of parliament managed to gather enough numbers to replace clioodau with the mayor of Big Tree Camp, alamandx who duly became the 16th "head of state" for the year.

alamandx died when he fell out of a tree late in the year and was replaced by the Mayor of Three Sisters, rendelp, bringing the total to 17 for the year. This stood as a world record until surpassed by Rejistania in 1992.

Yes, but the record for most heads of state in a year is 20 for first place, and 17 for second. Since this is more than the number of months in a year, both of those countries prolly have their fair share of leaders who served shorter than yours. Maybe it would make about 9th or 10th place?

OOC: so far there isn't any NS records that are shorter, except the record, so until then, this is #2 IMHO.

Not to rain on any parades or anything, but according to the wiki page (last modified in 2004), Ian VII (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/ian_vii_of_iansisle.html) only reigned for a bit less than three months, from 2 November 1900 to 19 January 1901. Also, the article specifies him as "one of the shortest-sitting monarchs in Iansislean history", implying that there have been some who have held the throne for shorter periods in just one country.

I'm not trying to claim the record or anything, just saying that five months is a relatively long reign. Hell, I'm willing to bet that half the Russian tsars didn't even make it five months before being assassinated.

I suppose I ought to try and claim some sort of record, though:

Longest Naval Salute
After Lord Westergate's attempt to free King James during the Madders Purges, no less than fifteen flag officers were changed in Iansisle's Home Fleet, then at anchor in the Mansmouth Roads. As Iansislean naval tradition requires a salute for both a departing and arriving flag officer (eleven guns for a commodore, thirteen for a rear admiral, fifteen for a vice admiral, and seventeen for a full admiral), each of the 76 ships then present as well as the three shore batteries in visual range fired a total of 364 rounds from their saluting guns as each flagship in turn lowered the old and then raised the new standards. The procedure started at 7:02 in the morning and lasted until 11:28 that evening, a total of 16 hours and 26 minutes. The entire process drew a sharp complaint to the Admiralty from the mayors of Mansmouth and neighboring Nenton, and the vast expenditure of cordite made a cash-strapped National Assembly call for reforms in naval ceremonial procedures.

That's for circulating heads of state the record Kurona is aiming for is shortest reign by a single head of state. The way I see it is, if there are nations who had shorter, let them come forward and claim it, otherwise the record should be fair game

Since only two of Rejistania’s twenty heads of state in 1992 could have been in charge for more than five months, there must have been at least eighteen heads of state in Rejistania, in that year that beat the record that Kurona claimed. So people have made claims that contradict Kurona’s, only no one has specifically claimed first or second place.

indeed, Rejistania has had a 6 kalesic eletions (3 weeks) term-limit and often the majorities were so thin that after that time the coalition had no majority and the head of state was replaced by a candidate of the new majority.

Physically largest piece of currency: Northern Rangerian bronze markka, a circular piece of coinage used in Northern Rangeria. Its width is typically 35 cm (13.8 inches) and thickness 2 cm (0.8 inches). While mostly supplanted by modern richard, it is still widely used in countryside as a measurement of wealth. The Central Bank of Northern Rangeria will continue to accept the bronze markka until 2010.

Most illegitimate offspring: Prince Calew III 'the Ox' of Northern Rangeria (1326-1401) with 1,377 acknowledged illegitimate offspring. Many historians contribute this great number of offspring as a result of Northern Rangerian traditional acceptance of illegitimate children and to the Prince's charming nature. However, he did not produce any legitimate offspring with his wife, Queen Margetha, which led to the so-called War of the Wild Oats (which raged until 1404) after he passed away in the bed of his mistress in 1401.

The Golden Horde will challenge the Kuronan record. Our Imperial Archives indicated that in 1725 the Zhezong Emperor (also known and Chagatai Khagan) ascended the Horse Throne on April 24th at 7:30 AM proclaimed himself Emperor and Great Khan, and was promptly murdered by angry nobles who opposed him as Crown Prince and opposed his reign. He can be said to have reigned for an entirety of 5 minutes.

Since there are several regnal positions in the Golden Horde, there is much grey area. Zhezong had been officially crowned as the Emperor of China three weeks prior, but had neither formally taken the Korean Crown, the Peacock Throne of the Shah, and headed to Karakorum to take the prime position of Great Khan. Since in Mongolian law the ruler of the entire Empire is the Khan, he cannot be considered as the Mongolian sovereign until he A. becomes Khan and B. makes his first decree.

It is often overlooked, but crucial to the claim, to know that Zhezong did make an official decree - his first and only. He immediatly declared the abolition of the landed nobility, which prompted his murder. He can thus be said to be the shortest ruling Imperial monarch, and claims the title of shortest reign.

As an endnote- the entire affairs prompted a long argument about succession, resulting in several deaths and an illegitimate birth. Five months later Timur Khan took the throne and immediatly reformed the system- to this day, Mongolian rulers are given all the composite titles at once, and only the Khan is seen as a legitimate legal title. The others are merely ceremonial.

Highest number of heads of state in a year
number: 17 (1975)

<snip>

...The joke "head of state" election so amused many members of the national parliament that, over the next 13 sitting days, a new Protector of Civic Choice, Economic Participation and the Natural Environment was elected each day, culminating in the election of the congenital idiot, clioodau, from Bonang Electoral District # 33...

<more snip>

That's 13 heads of state in 13 sitting days of Parliament, so presumably the best Princess Keija Albin of Kurona can be is 14th shortest reigning head of state.

The number 1 record for heads of state in one year is Rejistania's 20 which is an average of one every 18¼ days, so I would argue that it is likely that the Princess comes in at well over 30th spot.

03-01-2008, 18:31
Shortest time(s) as ruler of a nation During the January through May Revolutions, in which the government of Vojvodina-Nihon changed hands an estimated 626 times, several individuals ruled the nation for very short periods of time. On February 26, 2007, High Emperor Ludovic M. Hooper was crowned -- at approximately 11:07 in the morning -- by one of his bodyguards, and raised himself from his seat to address the populace from his window. En route to the window, he suffered a fatal heart attack and died instantly, leaving no successor. Emperor Hooper ruled for an estimated 30 seconds.

Later the same day, around 19:36 in the evening, Hooper's son Bhatyvanzh, to whom the throne had passed, was run over by a taxi. With him was his brother Greznuf, who seized the crown from his brother's head and was proclaimed by the people as the new leader. An impromptu parade was immediately organised, but unfortunately passing traffic was not informed and Greznuf Hooper was struck by a bus at 7:16 as he paraded triumphantly through the streets and died, ruling as Emperor for a total of 2 minutes and 40 seconds.

Some have claimed that former Vojvodinian President Thomas Hobbes had been dead for three hundred and fifty-two years before he was elected, giving him an even shorter reign of negative 355 years, but this claim has been highly disputed, as President Hobbes was seen to move and talk during his three-year term, and even write books on philosophy (or maybe it was just a very convincing body double).

You can, but since there is many more that are shorter, especially since Errinundera's post confirming (sort of) that Rejistania's 20 leaders in one year averages to one every 18¼ days breaks that 5 week record, so a 5 week long record isn't going to count.. sorry.

Also I hope that soonish we'll have a Wiki to put these in, as that will be infinitely easier to keep track of than in a thread.

Would "Tallest Tree" and "Lowest proportion of nation's population actually resident within nation's borders" both count as "Major", or could I claim both of them?
(They are in different nations, with no IC connection...)

For the Sports section, what about all of the NS Olympic records? (Yes, I do realise that sorting these out would be a big job for a single person to handle, but if each nation that holds any of these records were to be politely encouraged to do their share...)

You can claim up to 3 records at any one time. Like I stated before; try to be original, if possible. (so yes those would be "Major" records)

As for the Olympic records and/or other sports records,
1- For the Olympics, it would take a while (about 2 hours or so) to look through all the results pages and compile a list of the records.
2-As for the other sports records, (ie: World Cup, World Cup of Hockey, World Baseball Classic and other tourneys) I personally think that it would be too difficult to determine any specific record, but national sporting records could be determined.

WORLD'S TALLEST MOUNTAIN: Columbus Mount, at a record of 10 007 m, located at the north subregion of the Central region (island).

I don't think records like this are feasible, because someone can always come up with a bigger mountain.

14 minutes is actually quite long. Why, most modern wedding ceremonies in Snefaldia can take about 5 seconds- "do you? Good. Do you? Good. Congrats."

That is true, BUT UNTIL someone does, (and the point of this thread is NOT to ONE-UP each other, but to be original, folks!)

Of the most recent records posted, THEY ALL are posted on the wikistates site, but are offically PENDING until confirmed (which OOCly is 3 days)

AP, I'm only considering the area for your railway station, as techincally you posted 3 records at once. (If you wish to have a different one listed, post it here)
St Edmundan Antarctic
25-10-2008, 11:46
"Lowest proportion of a nation's population actually resident within that nation's own territories" _ St Edmundan Antarctic.

The national population is 5.311 billion.
The current resident population of that nation's territories (which comprise about half of Antarctica, plus some nearby islands, on one version of Earth...) is just under 5'000, i.e. approximately one millionth of the nation's total population.
Most of this country's other nationals live in either 'St Edmund' itself or 'St Edmund Air', and have dual nationality accordingly.

(This "nation" was established, as a legal fiction really, to let the St Edmundan government retain a voice in the NSUN after St Edmund proper had withdrawn from that organistion. Its territories aren't exactly inviting to settlers, and in fact almost all of them are included within a single 'national park' to which access -- even for the country's own nationals -- has always been highly restricted...)

(Yes, I do realise that there are a few nations around that don't have any territories of their own at all to house their populations, this record is for nations that do have lands...)

By confirmed, I'm allowing 3 days for someone to either post a record that beats the record that is "pending", or to dispute it, by pointing out that there is a record that already exists that beats the "pending" record. (which doesn't really happen too much)

World's Largest City (Population)

Moskva, Myedvedeya

Population: 47 million

The Empire wishes to dispute this record; our capital of Ptolemais at last census had a population of 127 million people, with another three cities within the Empire having populations of above the fifty million mark. Given that there are other nations with populations of at least ten billion people, it is likely that there are other cities which have populations of at least a hundred million, if not two hundred million.

you compete with current records? than, if so, i have one.

World's Closest Election: 1893 South Miroxian Presidential Election
Situation: South Miroxia had just gotten independence 12 years earlier from an oppresive empire, and the past 2 presidents were from the always unopposed Miroxian Nationalist Party. After Worker's rights were starting to fade because of the war with North Miroxia, a new Party, the Labor Party, was formed. The people of Miroxia voted and it was tied, 502,326 to 502,326. The Miroxian Congress then had to take a vote. The final vote, after the 120 congressional votes, was Stuart Hughes, Labor Party - 502,387 ; incumbent President Randall Dhi, Miroxian nationalist party - 502,386.

Stuart won it on a 61-59 congressional vote, but died of scarlet fever a year later.

Fair point, but no doubt those same religious groups would claim that the New Jerusalem (or whatever their heavenly city is called) is ever-so-slightly larger than anything even Myedvedeya could throw at it.

(ooc: Largest Cities (Population) will not be considered a record, as this thread would eventually turn into a 1-upmanship thread about that record. ANY RECORD that involves population, land area, Gross National Product and the like WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED at all!

and Miroxia, This is not "you compete with current records? than, if so, i have one" thread either. (BTW if Stewart won the congressional vote 61-59, then your record wouldn't count anyway, as it was won by 2 votes, not 1.)
