World Cup 39 Introduction:

For more information on the World Cup, its History, how it works, who runs it, and the competitions related to it, check out the World Cup Wiki Site (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Cup).

The NSWC is a tournament for any NS nation who signs up. This World Cup is about to start its 39th competition, and your nation can take part! Every team is given a rank based on their performances in previous Cups, and the starting rank is roughly 200 (the Current 'best team in the world' is Az-cz, with a rank of 1) See: KPB Rankings (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/KPB_ranking_system)

Scores are generated using either a Java program or through various or MS Excel sheet 'scorinators' which use random numbers, weighted by ranking and RP bonus to produce the scores.

It is encouraged for Nations to RP - roleplay - their matches, team rosters, players and such. Good RPs will help raise your chance of winning (especially in the Baptism of Fire). Please note: A lot of RPs does not guarantee goals or wins, but your chances are improved of this happening. i.e. Two debutant, non-ranked, nations play each other. One has RP'd a few times, the other has not. The nation who has participated should have the better probability of victory, but still has a chance of a Win, Loss or Draw.

RPs can be Team Roster announcements, fan comments, press conferences, media stories, anything about the game, as long as you've kept to the score as posted or TGd to you by the host/scorer.

For any other questions you may have, please see the World Cup FAQs article on NSwiki. (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Cup_FAQs) - Courtesy of Starblaydia

The longest-running sports-competition in NationStates reaches its milestone Thirty-ninth tournament: the Football (Soccer) World Cup. Please do specify if you have not participated before.

If your nation is new to the World Cup, or if you have no KPB points, you may be able to take part in the preliminary Baptism of Fire Cup (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Baptism_of_Fire) competition.
If this is your first Cup, please indicate whether you wish to be registered for the Baptism of Fire or not.

Puppets have to post with their nation and identify their master. One Puppet per Master nation, and you may only enter a puppet once you have already competed in a World Cup'

Bashenk, you do not have permission to access this page. This could be due to one of several reasons:

Your user account may not have sufficient privileges to access this page. Are you trying to edit someone else's post, access administrative features or some other privileged system?
If you are trying to post, the administrator may have disabled your account, or it may be awaiting activation.

The newly discovered isle of Naboombu Umbongo wishes to partake in this so-called "Football World Cup" and conclude that as this is their first ever escapade into any kind of cross-nation competition, they would be eligible for the "Baptism of Fire" competition also.

Local self-employed astronaut Mr Spoon of Button Moon has been appointed as the team's manager, coach and physio with his wife Mrs Spoon likely to take over the responsibility for half-time oranges and refreshments. Mr Spoon shot to national fame with his televised outer-space escapades and is father of one to his daughter Tina Teaspoon. He is said to be delighted to be involved in the game he first discovered whilst looking through a telescope and his search for 11 islanders to learn and then play this largely unknown phenomenon begins today.

Five more teams are needed so that the qualifying stage can have ten groups of eight (technically, the current number of teams would allow fifteen groups of five, but then each team would play only eight matches in qualifying, which is too short).

Why would each team necessarily play just 8 matches in qualifying? Why not 16?

(Not that I'm seriously suggesting a format where each team plays each other team four times, just noting that it is technically possible.)

Since the number of teams in each group is odd, each team would have four bye days in addition to the sixteen matches, which would result in a twenty-day qualifying round, excluding any days set aside for friendlies. It would be the longest qualifying round ever used in the World Cup, despite the relatively low number of teams.

Now if only we had as many signups as bumps here… :p

eight matches too short (really?), how is this worked out, even if we had groups of ten then wouldn't the teams be only needed to play nine games for qualifying to see who makes it in to the next group stage. Forgive my ignorance on this matter it is the first time I am competing in the World Cup perhaps there is a site where I can read about the process that someone could give me? I know there is an article on NSWiki but that is down at the moment is there any where else

Is there anything preventing us from having groups with different sizes? UEFA does, I assume though that it gets balanced out by some groups having more strong/weak teams than others.

With 76 teams... four groups of 7, and six of 8? Having 12/14 games per group seems reasonable.

Is there anything preventing us from having groups with different sizes? UEFA does, I assume though that it gets balanced out by some groups having more strong/weak teams than others. With 76 teams... four groups of 7, and six of 8? Having 12/14 games per group seems reasonable.
There’s nothing preventing it, but qualifying groups have always been equally-sized, and it’s one less thing for people to complain about. Also, the teams in the larger groups would have their KPB rank (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/kpb_ranking_system.html) “padded” by two likely wins against the low-ranked team at the bottom of the group.

The Baptism of Fire tournament would also need unevenly-sized groups, since there are currently nineteen teams in it. Since the BoF groups are smaller, and all teams are otherwise equal, uneven groups wouldn’t work well there.

I guess for the BoF it makes sense; all other things being equal, it doesn't make sense to give one group an advantage over any other. But for more established teams in the regular WC, couldn't the ratings be weighted based on the number of games played or something? Although I guess that does add unnecessary complexity to a system that already works.

The KPB system actually does work this way. Actually as far as the rankings are concerned, a BoF with unequal groups would work perfectly fine because of the fact that all teams are equal. But in a World Cup where the teams are not equal...well, honestly I think CH can explain this problem better than I can, and I'm sure he'll be happy to do so next time he looks at this thread. :D

The BoF wouldn’t work any better than the WC, it just has the opposite problem—the chances of qualifying for the World Cup are virtually unaffected by having an extra low-ranked team in the qualifying group, but the rankings would be skewed by points earned against that team; the points earned from the BoF group stage would be fine, but teams in a smaller group have a better chance of advancing to the knockout stage.

Now, if we just had four more signups…

Not at all!

This is a probable Baptism of Fire cutoff: nations that post after this are unlikely to participate in that tournament, but may still participate in the World Cup qualifiers.

unless you get four more BoF signups before that tournament goes into major planning.

Yeah, the group draw having been completed, I think I can safely say that BoF signups are closed. Besides, four more teams would push the overall total past 82...

You’re in the Baptism of Fire tournament (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=547656), which will soon begin; the World Cup qualifiers will not start until after the BoF is over.

Unfortunately the Baptism of Fire has already been started. However you're still welcome to compete once the main competition begins shortly after the conclusion of the BoF.

Well the thread has been created and the groups have been drawn, so I would believe it to be. However as the matches have yet to start, the hosts might be able to do something.

Unfortunately, the only way for the Baptism of Fire to get larger groups of equal size, even if two more teams were to sign up in the next three hours, would be if the World Cup signups went over capacity, so Evil Polish Donors and Wavispa cannot compete there. They can, however, participate in the World Cup qualifiers.

Violitism has taken the last available spot so unfortunately for Carcim, it looks like you won't be able join. However it is possible that one or more nations will have ceased.

So We're adding Carcim to the waiting list...

I know it says that the signups have been closed, but I'm registering interest anyway because I've participated before. Hell, I won a Cup of Harmony once! Don't remember when, but that's besides the points.
