"You're listening to the sports update on KBC Radio One, 99.1 in Kirkenes. Now the Rugby World Cup is underway and Kelssek has begun with a victory; in Taeshan, here's James Dubin."

"Beating the hosts is never easy at any given international sporting event but Kelssek have managed it at the 9th Rugby World Cup being held in Taeshan. Joel Danforth, who plays his club rugby for Latrobe in the Superleague, really should have done better with the four penalty attempts but with conversions he was a perfect seven for seven as Kelssek took a 49-36 victory. Josh Lachlan had an international debut to remember as the Latrobe lock forward scored two of those tries following intense pressure in the second half. Taeshan mounted a late comeback, scoring a try against the run of play in the 66th minute and adding six more unanswered points from penalties but Kelssek held on for the win.

"Elsewhere Paatua beat Magnus Valerius 16-8 andMallatarsland defeated Alversia 26-19. In two high-scoring affairs defending champioons Ariddia got the better of Sorthern Northland 45-35 and Candelaria and Marquez saw off Lovisa 57-49. Ashlaea were also crushed by Solenial 49-14."

Baseball Brian Corrada hit a two-run homer in the sixth innings and a sacrifice fly in the 12th as the Agujero Blastoffs rallied from a five-run deficit to beat the Southerntown Jacks 10-9 and complete a three-game streak. The result keeps the Blastoffs top of the Islands Conference, and puts milkman Corrada’s once promising career back on track after his release from the Soberón Woodpeckers in the summer. A sell-out 21 crowd watched the decisive game at the Agujero Recreation Ground, with a record 9 of them remaining behind afterwards for the now-traditional half-hour explanation of what they were actually watching.

Snooker Weihuang Huang stunned Candelariasian No.1 Henry Exarhos 5-2 to make the semi-final of the Puff-And-Go Arrigo Trophy. The Clotaire native won the first two frames with breaks of 110 and 114, but the Allemali teenager Huang reeled off successive frames of 70, 62 and 105 to put himself within touching distance of his first rankings semi. A close sixth game just went Huang’s way, before the youngster made a break of 113 to set up a clash with a fellow teen, Taeshan-born David oh my god we have a rugby team, who destroyed Morant Gault 5-1 yesterday.

Rugby Union Krishna Crow’s C&M won a high-scoring clash on the opening day of the RWC9 in Taeshan, overcoming old foes Lovisa 57-49. The game was as open, but closer, than previous times the two sides have met, reflecting the low expectations of the Huge Blues this time around. C&M dominated from the off with early tries from Vinny Mabbs and newcomer Damien Mella before Lovisa began to make inroads against a weak Candelariasian forward line and the game became increasingly heated with Ian Bovman, Adi Kinsella and three Lovisan players all sinbinned. Warren Ubiña then came into his own with a series of penalties, but it took a hat-trick of tries from Enilson Beattie late on to keep the game beyond Lovisa.

Boule Fighting Ayla Kilavuz completed a clean sweep of the year’s majors in the women’s game with a 65:30 and 5-0 scoresheet after day five of the Vo Masters. She was the only competitor to win all ten of her match-ups after a fraught deciding game with promising youngster Ellie Toms finished at 13:11; Toms having blown a 9:4 lead. Kilavuz took the fight on a split decision, having dominated the later rounds but receiving a cut lip early on. Anna Hancock finished second with an overall 56:34 and 5-0 record.

Badminton María Núñez is through to the New Oslo Rushmore International Open final in United Denmark, beating the danger woman in the line-up Switzaland’s Haydee Pache. The Switzish Rushmori number 1 was overcome 6-21 21-17 21-19 in a thriller by Castillo-born Núñez, who sets up a clash with third seed Michaela Doran of Chesapeake Bay in the final. Teenagers Pearce Pedotti and Holly Richards beat the second seeds from Delamawaria 21-19 15-21 21-19 to reach the Women’s Doubles final. The Candelarias’ men have fared less well, Matt Fogg exiting earlier in the morning in his quarter-final as the last of C&M's contigent in the draw.

C&M beat Ariddia at something!

Just when it looked like the Huge Blues’ second World Cup campaign was set to drift off into obscurity, Krishna Crow’s men went and won a group stage match against one of international sports true elite sides; Ariddia.

For the few hardy souls who made the trip to the Pacific Isles, this was always going to be an occasion to savour, with the previous World Cup’s defeated finalists uleking their hearts out following a powerful rendition of Dream by the largely Ariddian crowd; Westerners, North-Westerners and PDSRA citizens alike. A slightly sloshed version of O, Sweet Nation followed and helped steel the C&M XV for their daunting challenge.

Ariddia were two tries to the good after just seven minutes and seemingly set for an easy victory, but Crow’s side had learnt from their two defeats to rivals Sorthern Northland and against eventual champions Solenial in the quarter-finals last time around, and quickly pulled themselves together. Veteran Zachary Mickey wreaked havoc at outside-centre, his runs bringing about C&M’s first and second tries in an astonishing first half. Enilson Beattie scored them both, with Warren Ubiña also touching down. Ironically, the usually dependable boot of Ubiña had failed him somewhat today, failing to find conversions for the first two tries, but he was steadfast in kicking over from his own.

A break by Beattie late in the first half gave Miho Tipton C&M’s fourth try, and put the underdogs 27 – 12 up at the break. Ariddia were far from done however and dominated the second half adding another two tries of their own, but Crow made a handful of changes that got C&M back on the ball and resulted in a series of penalties coolly finished by Ubiña.

The result did not go unnoticed among the Candelarias’ Ariddian community. Sophie Bugnet, a Social Democratic & Green Party member of the Albrecht City Council told us; “Oh, they beat us did they? I mean, we beat them. Or… I dunno. Yes, my fella mentioned there was a C&M side off in the World Cup. To be honest he was just arsed off that the Panthers wouldn’t have Bardi, Rendle, Allen or Bovman for a couple of weeks. But, um. No, it’s really good to see both my countries off being all successful in foreign climes. Um. Look, I don’t mean to be rude, but I’ve really got to see a man about a blocked drain, so…”

The Albrecht Herald Online/Sport/Breaking News

The Candelaria And Marquez Rugby Football Union is to lodge an official complaint with the game’s governing body, it has been confirmed. The move follows the decision by the World Cup organisational authorities in Taeshan to invalidate the results of the first two rounds of games at the current tournament and restart the event afresh; following a series of rows with other nations, though principally Sorthern Northland, over the handling of the tournament thus far.

Earlier, questions were asked in parliament following the IRB’s announcement, with C&M’s results thus far – two high scoring wins from two games – set to be wiped from the record. Nathalie van Dijk, the Social Democratic & Green Party spokesperson for Sport, called upon the CAMRFU to boycott the event; a notion that was not dismissed out of hand by her government counterpart, Tatulya Samed. The CAMRFU have since stated that a withdrawal is not on the cards, but a spokesman told the Herald that a strongly-worded statement would be sent to the IRB. He also called upon Mallatarsland, the only other country with a two-in-two record, to follow his organisation’s lead.

There has been no word from Taeshan authorities as to whether visiting supporters would be given refunds for the previous matches, or allowed into the replays for free.

[OOC: The above is IC, obviously. OOC, there’s just a lot of theatrical eye-rolling…]
