Welcome to the official Gridiron World Championship roster/RP thread.

Group stage matchday 2: Thu 1 Nov (3pm-7pm)
Group stage matchday 3: Fri 2 Nov (after 7pm; tentative)

Knockout stage matchups released: Mon 5 Nov (with MD6 scores)
Round of 16: Tue 6 Nov (after 9pm)
Quarterfinals: Wed 7 Nov (after 9pm)
Semifinals: Thu 8 Nov (after 9pm)
Final: Fri 9 Nov (after 7pm; tentative)

And now, instructions regarding rosters. (IMPORTANT)

Each team will be given a total of 55 points to distribute among the following nine areas to determine your team's offensive, defensive, and special teams strength:

Quarterback
Running backs
Receivers
Offensive line
Defensive line
Linebackers
Defensive secondary
Kicking
Kick returns

You may put up to 10 points in each category. Please include these ratings along with your roster (or even by themselves; it's better than nothing, at least).

Any team with no point distribution specified will default to a rating of 5 in all categories. (Yes, that's a total of only 45 points - think of the extra 10 points as your bonus for posting a roster.)

Good luck to everyone and have fun!

The Gnomes were excited for their first ever gridiron competition, but at the same time scared out of their minds. They had tried their hand at the suicide football of the Milchamans and while they enjoyed it, they were definitely disadvantaged by their size. And they expected such to be a problem here. In sports like baseball or soccer it's easy enough to cover up their stature, but in football there really isn't.

To try to combat this the Gnomes decided that they would be running basically what they were calling an option six. Basically they started with six players in their backfield and just let them run and pitch the ball like crazy. Not expecting more than just a seconds worth of time from their offensive line they were counting on their QB and running backs to use their speed to cut their defensive opponents up. And laterals would be key. Most plays from the Az-cz offense involved at least two laterals. It meant that they took big risks, but grinding it out just isn't an option for this team.

The coaches weren't that confident of the success of this lineup but knew that if there was to be any chance of success they'd better keep it a secret. So all practices were private affairs with no reporters allowed anywhere near the field. The secrecy surrounding the team only hightened the excitement for Az-czzers as they wondered if this team could somehow uphold the Az-czid legacy of sporting dominance.

Gridiron Championships to start

Lead by by 2 unusual formations, Qazox manged to qualify for the 1st Gridiron World Championships in Vephrall. A spread wishbone offense, meaning there's only one reciever and three running backs, and a 3-3-5 defense, with an extra defensive back, could cause matchup problems at times, but will force the team's opponents to run around the field wearing them down easy.

On Offense, the 1-2-3 punch of QB Harry Pitts, HB Kevin Hertz and WB Brian Dorett, averaged 278 yds per game combined in the regional qualifers, and Pitts did manage to throw for an average of 150 yards a game in the 4 games as well.

The defense, lead by MLB Daryl Whitely's 5 sacks and 3 FF and by NB John Redding's 6 INTS, is ready for the challenge of stopping the high powered attacks the team will face.

The team's only real weakness is the kicking game where Kicker Harvey Pollack was only 4 of 10 on FG attempts with his long being only 39 yds. The return game isn't great either as Frank Dobbs averaged only 2.1 yds per punt return and 15.3 on kickoffs.

Overall though, the team should do well with a 3-1 group record and should advance to at least the quarterfinals.

Well, it hadn't been pretty, but the Vephrese American football team had managed to eke out a 27-21 win in its first international game.

The Wolves, as some fans have taken to referring to them as (though they have not officially adopted this name themselves), expected to get most of their production on the ground, with their well-established running game expected to take advantage of Bostopia's average-rated rush defense. Something went very wrong, however, and the team barely managed a positive rushing yardage total in the game, taking just 7 yards on 41 carries. Admittedly, this includes the five sacks of quarterback Clituleng Apyrphung, totalling 37 yards, but nevertheless highly-rated running backs Wassaraat Mocks and Fihor Cothasat averaged only about 1.2 yards per carry in the game. Thankfully, Apyrphung's ability to throw the ball did not disappoint. Despite a slow start in the first quarter (3-of-5 for just 5 yards), the receivers continued to pick up more and more balls and yardage as the game progressed. Celtuars Baspaalt in particular distinguished himself with several unlikely catches and scored two of the team's three touchdowns.

On the other side of the ball, the Vephrese defense turned in a fairly average performance. Bostopia's balanced offense managed a total of 414 yards on the day, with two touchdowns through the air and one on the ground. Chris King's 59-yard run with four minutes to go in the game would help keep it alive for Bostopia, with that touchdown cutting the lead to 20-14, but it ended up not being enough; both teams would go on to score one more touchdown before the final whistle.

Flying option works just fine, team done in by poor line

The pink & green was excited about playing in their first gridiron tournament. It was a jacked up atmosphere as the Gnomes came out and the St. Samuel fans were almost on the same pitch.

And the crazy tone of the match was set right from the start. After winning the coin toss the gnomes elected to recieve and immediately ran the kickoff back 103 yards, with three laterals involved on the way to set the pink & green into a frenzy.

However on the next drive St. Samuel found out just how to attack the Gnomes defense. After two short runs they were in 3rd & 7 facing the prospect of giving the Gnomes the ball back and digging themselves a big hole. However the next play revealed the key to the game. With no pass rush at all the St. Samuel quarterback stood in the pocket for a ridiculous 45 seconds while his recievers were working to get open. Despite being a very talented secondary, no team is capable of staying on their man that long and eventually a St. Samuel reciever got open for a 22 yard gain. The rest of the drive St. Samuel didn't attempt a run and put together a 7 play 80 yard down drive to take the lead. The amazing thing was that the 7 play drive took 7 minutes off the clock.

St. Samuel kicked off again and the Gnomes once again ran the ball back for six, this time a 98 yard kickoff return. After another St. Samuel drive the score was tied at 14 with 1 minute gone in the second quarter and the Az-cz offense yet to set foot on the field.

The St. Samuel team got smart and just kicked the ball straight out of bounds. Admittedly it gave the Gnomes good field position, but better that than six points. Az-cz and St. Samuel both put together scoring drives from there, with each team using its bread and butter plays. Az-cz ran 7 runs and just a single pass on their drive and St. Samuel used 8 passes to score theirs. Leading to a 21-21 half time tie.

Things continued much the same way in the second half with each team scoring two touchdowns to put the score to 35-35 with 11 minutes left in the fourth quarter. St. Samuel made what looked like a killer gaffe as an underthrown pass was picked off and the Gnomes took over. The Gnomes marched down to the St. Samuel 7 before the deciding series of the game occurred. The Gnomes ran on first down and got to the four but were tackled in the backfield on second down to move back to the five. On third down they tried a pass but the St. Samuel cornerback just recovered to deflect the ball out of bounds. The gnomes kicked the field goal to take the lead 38-35. Unfortunately St. Samuel drove the length of the field to score a 22 yard touchdown pass on the last play of the game to beat Az-cz 42-38.

While the special teams and offense were both great the true flaw in the team was shown. The gnomes would have to find someway to generate a pass rush or they would be doomed. Letting quarterbacks spend a full minute looking for recievers will lead only to their doom. Next up is Liverpool England. The Gnomes are hoping to learn from their experience to even up their record.

Well you can't say much it didn't look good from the begining as the host vephrellian team got up to a 49-0 lead at halftime, but it looked great going into the second half as Gabe Martin on the second play from scrimmage to start the third hit a wide open jack cito for the Falcons first points ever. Then after Zellefrow got an intercaption at the 15 and brought it back for a td the lead was down to 38, but on the next two drives the falcons only had a 64 yard fg the world record breaker by Gramatica and another one for 31 yards the falcons lost in a devestating blowout 52-20

Qazox win Opener 30-23

The unusual defensive formation of Qazox held Fedorian to only 159 total yards of offense, but the Fedorian's special teams kept them close until the end. QB Harry Pitts had 76 yards rushing himself, but threw 2 INT's, both leading to Fedorian FG's. Overall Qazox had 425 Yards of offense, with 335 yds coming on the ground. Up next is Geisenfried.

Madness continues, gnomes win a weird one

The Gnomes bounced back from their defeat against St. Samuel by trouncing the Liverpool England squad 23-6. For the second straight game they took the opening kickoff back for a touchdown and that was all that was necessary.

The team learned from their lessons last week and came out in a 0-4-7 formation. They didn't bother lining anyone up on the line and came with basically continuous blitzes from the linebackers and safeties. That lead to two sacks on the first Liverpool England drive. However Liverpool England had learned from the tapes how to defend against our attack and also came out in a heavy secondary set and played a kind of prevent defense which allowed a lot of short runs of 1 to 3 yards, but prevented the big plays the team used so effectively against St. Samuel. The game was quite low scoring with neither team mounting another drive in the first half.

Liverpool England thought they had tied the score on their opening drive of the second half when they used a lot of runs to break through for a touchdown culminating in a 5 yard run. But when the extra point was blocked the Gnomes were jacked up.

They finally broke a big play on the next drive breaking a 55 yard run on the second play to get down to the 4. Liverpool England held them to a field goal however.

The game was broke open on the next drive when Liverpool England's quarterback tried to force a pass under heavy pressure. An Az-cz cornerback made the read and took it back for six which made the score 17-6. The Gnomes added two field goals in the fourth to pick up an important win and increase their chances of qualification. They'll now take their rest day to try to figure out new strategies before the rematch against St. Samuel.

(ooc: IF that were my score, I'd just Rp that my opponents failed on a 4th and goal at the 1 yd line with under 30 seconds left in the game, and my QB just ran around the endzone until the final second when he kneeled down.)

Mallatarsland win opening Games

Despite a lack of understanding of the finer aspects of the game and having a hotchpotch make up to the Team, the Mallatarsland 69 'ers have made a great start to the Tournament with wins over both Setinland and Lovisa. It appears through luck rather than judgement, the Offence are playing an excellent game and are scoring touchdowns at will. Of course the rather shaky Defence will be problematical against decent opposition but the 69 'ers are making the most of it at the moment.
Kura-Pelland

In a great high-scoring display, Kura-Pelland moved to the top of the group by beating Quakmybush 42-27.

They had to do it the hard way; the kickoff was returned for a touchdown, and then a fumble was recovered to spark a drive that ended with three points. But Kura-Pelland soon sparked into life, or more pertinently Graham Vepra did - consistently getting open, and making three receptions for first downs before Alan Yarabel opted to finish the job himself with a five-yard sneak to end the quarter at 10-7.

The two defences dominated the second quarter, but that didn't stop the scoring; free safety Aaron Raygor gave Kura-Pelland the lead with a 59-yard interception return, before a second fumble recovery led to a drive that this time did produce six points rather than three. 17-14 at the half, but Xavier Garasunda made that a very short-lived lead as he returned a kickoff for six. Serious questions must be asked about some of the special teams blocking on both sides.

That gave Kura-Pelland all the momentum they could wish for, and their next three drives led to touchdowns - only a Quakmybush field goal stopped the rot - leaving the game all over at 42-20. A late Quakmybush touchdown was no consolation, as the onside kick was recovered.

Taeshan Times
Well first of i have to explain why the Football Falcons are not called the Purple Knights like every other Taeshan national team. Well it makes more sense to name them the falcons and after all my favorite college football team is usaf and there the falcons. Well anyway...

It was a contest of quaterbacks Matin #4 threw six tds on the day 3 to Cinco and 3 to Patrick while the bostopian qb threw 5 also and there wideout 1 on a nice and crisp pass. Then the bostopians missed there last extra point. So the falcons could then run the clock uot with just 5 minutes two go, but the falcon running back nRudi Williams broke threw the line and scored a td and since on the last kick gramatica got hurt the backup qb missed the extra point. Then the bostopians trying to score on there next drive got picked of By gabe martin the starting qb and he ran it the whole way into the endzone. Dega then missed another ep.

Gnomes get revenge against St. Samuel

After losing a wild shootout 42-38 the first time the two teams met the Gnomes were looking for revenge and they found it as they dominated the start and end to the game with St. Samuel only playing well in the middle.

St. Samuel started with the ball and weren't prepared for the Az-cz adjusted blitz rush and on second down a cornerback went unmolested into the back field and stripped the St. Samuel quarterback and ran the bal back for a touchdown to put the team up 7-0.

After forcing a three and out from St. Samuel a fine punt return gave the Gnomes the ball on the St. Samuel 9. They were unable to punch it in however and kicked the field goal to go up 10-0.

Following another short series from St. Samuel, with one first down the Gnomes got the ball back and this time they found the endzone. A 44 yard run from the Gnomes 39 set them up deep and the Gnomes found a touchdown through the air on third and four from the St. Samuel 11 yard line.

St. Samuel started to have some success after that mounting a successful last drive of the half to cut the Az-cz lead to 17-7 going into the half.

The next possession saw the Gnomes commit their first turnover of the competition as after taking over at the 20 after a touchback one of the laterals was a bit mistimed and a St. Samuel linebacker was able to deflect the ball away and force a fumble which St. Samuel recoverd. On the very next play from scrimmage St. Samuel found the endzone again.

The Gnomes quickly drove the field again but found their offense stymied at the goal line, one of the weaknesses of this team and kicked a second field goal to go up 20-14.

After a poor idea on the kickoff return St. Samuel found themselves pinned at their own three yard line. However, after being pushed back to the two on two stuffed run plays, some nice pass protection and a hole in the Az-cz defense allowed St. Samuel to erase that all on third down with a 98 yard touchdown pass that looked to be backbreaking and put St. Samuel up 21-20 with little time left in the third quarter.

However the Gnomes weren't rattled and took control of the game. Taking over from their 40 after the St. Samuel kick went out of bounds the Gnomes took short chunks of yardage to wind their way down to the St. Samuel 37 where star running back Ml-Brn took the fourth lateral all the way into the endzone to give the Gnomes a 27-21 lead going into the fourth.

St. Samuel looked to be marching down the field to take the lead, getting all the way down to the Az-cz 21 before throwing a second interception which the Gnomes ran all the way back to move up 34-21.

St. Samuel executed a fine hurry-up offense to cut the lead to 34-28, but their onside kick went awry and the Gnomes ran it back for a touchdown to make the score 41-28. When St. Samuel was stopped after getting one first down the Gnomes were able to run out the clock and celebrate their victory. A win against Liverpool England would clinch Az-cz top of the group and any kind of decent performance would get them into the next round of the tournament.

Ocho cinco caught another 3 touchdowns having 10 on the cup and Ricky Zellefrow caught another. Then with the score at 27-28 falcons the vephrall team trying the extra point had a sailed snap fly over the holders hands which the kicker picked up at the fifty and the ran the wrong way and got tackled by Shawn Plank in his own endzone for a one point safety.

Qazox cruise past Geisenfried 54-6

Qazox looks to be almost unstoppable as they cruise to thier 4th straight win 54-6 over an overmatched Geisenfried. Kevin Hertz ran for 317 yds and 5 TD in the 1st half as Qazox jumped to a 42-0 halftime lead, before resting the starters in the 2nd half. Only a touchdown on the final play of the game kept Qazox from the shutout. Up next is Az-cz in the Round of 16. Az-cz went 2-2 in their group, scoring 28.5 ppg, while allowing 34.5. So on paper, Qazox' attack, averaging over 43 ppg, should have little trouble putting up scores.

Kura-Pelland
06-11-2007, 10:57
Kura-Pelland will face off against the nation of the really long newspaper name, Milchama, in the first knockout match of the tournament after destroying Quakmybush in the group decider.

In a game where each defence looked more likely to score themselves than stop opponents from scoring, the scene was set right away when Kura-Pelland scored a touchdown on their first drive; two running plays set up 3rd and 3 on their own 35, play action was called, and Graham Vepra was left laughably open as the corner assigned to him blitzed at the inactive tailback. Quakmybush's response was to score from the kickoff. It soon became clear that Quakmybush had no defence whatsoever, but there wasn't a lot Kura-Pelland's defence could do either.

Except make more scoring plays. Aaron Raygor scored his second defensive TD against this opposition in successive games, another pick sparked a drive that ended with another Vepra TD, and the first quarter ended 28-7.

The rest of the game was not dissimilar, although Quakmybush at least joined in the scoring riot a little, and the final score of 70-35 about sums it up.

'I'm not sure what was going on there, it was practically videogame stuff, but it was sure fun to win it', remarked the head coach after the game.

It may or may not be more of the same against Milchama, who are 2-2 with an average of around 30 points per game both for and against.

Putting a story to the names
By Jason Rowett
Deputy Sports Editor

The rugby players Liverpool England sent to the gridiron world championships have somehow managed to perform. And outperform, too. With victory in their final pool game - or, in this case, group stage game - the national gridiron team, who were playing amateur rugby union and rugby league just six months ago, won their group and advanced to the second round.

The 34-6 win over St Samuel capped an impressive group round in which they managed to win three games, scoring 143 points in the process while holding their opponents to just 54 - the second-lowest total of all the teams in the tournament, only behind Yafor 2 (51). A few surprise results along the way helped. The team started the whole campaign with an expected loss against Az-cz by 17 points, 6-23. What they - and what no one, really - didn't forsee would be an amazing 67-point turnover in the second meeting between the two. That's right. Try to get your head around that number - a turnover of 67 points against one of the favourites of the tournament. The underdogs won by a half-century, to steal a cricket term, 62 to 12. Their other outing this tournament, also against St Samuel, was a 41-13 win for Liverpool England.

But it could have been so much different. As I mentioned earlier, just six months ago these players were playing amateur rugby at local level. The Sports Ministry sent scouts all across Liverpool England at this time. Most of the 50 men on the team knew each other one way or another. Indeed, most of the starting offensive line - 8 of the 11, with the exception of tight end Luis Ibarra, wide receiver Daniel Charles, and offensive tackle Greg Lamoureux - played together on the same amateur team in a relatively poor suburb of Folenisa, out in the desert.

The scouts almost did not visit the suburbs, and even then they might not have seen these men at their finest, having fun playing rugby union. July 2146 saw a heatwave over most of the Great Folenisan Desert; the Met Service issued heat warnings for temperatures into their mid-40s Celsius. The scouts were scheduled to visit Folenisa from the 16th through the 19th - on the 18th, the heat was unbearable at an astounding 42°C. Of course, while the Met Service warned people to avoid direct intentional exposure to the sun, these men continued playing rugby. Not out in the open, of course, but in a specially-built indoor, closed-roof, air-conditioned arena. But the scouts didn't know that. They had no idea that there indeed was such a place - they found it rather by chance, driving down the road leading out of the suburb back into Folenisa. One needed a drink, of all things, and, having run out of bottled water, they stopped at the next building. Or, in this case, the IRF (Indoor Recreational Facility).

They went in, saw these men playing, and as they say, the rest is history. They were selected, with their families, to move out of the less-well-off area of town and resettle in any city of their choice, while the lads - mostly students in the late teens to mid twenties, with some older men - were taken to an intensive training course to drill them in the rules and techniques of gridiron.

Why am I telling you this story? Am I done yet, you wonder? No, I'm not. The press - us - treat these people as just mere sports athletes. The public - that's most of you readers - think they're professionals making big bucks, as the association football and baseball players do. So, I'm here to correct that wrong assumption. To give you their story. Let's put a story to their names.

Quarterback Justin Coon - who rushed for a touchdown and threw two TD passes in that now-famous 62-12 win - is only 18. He picked up rugby as a way to pass the time to try to avoid getting sucked into crime. Having not enough money to pay for university, he works - or worked? - at the local supermarket when he's free. Coon's father Michael is a taxi driver, while his mother died a few years ago. You can see how his family struggle. The good news is that if the team beat Fedorian and make the quarter-finals, the Sports Ministry has agreed to give Coon a fully-paid-for scholarship to any university of his choice.

How about that air-tight defence? Defensive tackle Jeff Booher's from Modna Sud, out on Barrier Island a few thousand miles from Folenisa. The Outer Islands, especially the smaller Barrier Island, are notoriously poorer compared to the mainland. Booher lives on no more than L£120 a week. Do the maths - that's no more than L£17.14 a day, in a time when even a plate of fried rice from that local Chinese takeaway costs L£5. Three meals a day for L£5 is unaffordable, so the small-sized Booher (as much as having a small frame makes little sense in the world of rugby and gridiron) eats only two a day, saving the rest for other necessities. Again, the Sports Ministry has agreed to give Booher financial assistance.

Coon and Booher aren't the only ones getting aid. But they're the ones - just two, out of 50 - I've chosen to profile for this article. I could have gone on - the 33-year-old kicker, Andrew Stevens, who's struggling after being released from a jail term for theft which he claims he did not commit; tight end Curtis Wyant, 24, who has to feed four people at home, including his severely disabled mother; reserve quarterback Kenneth Hu, homeless after the effects of Severe Tropical Storm Ehecatl flooded his house near Mountain Bay.

They're not professionals, nor are they well-paid - or even paid at all for that matter in some cases, unlike what most people think. They're names on a roster; statistics in the book. But there's a story to each name, behind each statistic. I've tried to bring them to you. They - and their plights - deserve more recognition than what we the media and you the public are giving them right now.

Kura-Pelland
07-11-2007, 12:35
In the end, it was a ludicrously high-scoring affair.

Defence? What was that word again? Whatever happened to that?

The World Championship of Takilan Gridiron reached its logical conclusion of insanity when Kura-Pelland were knocked out 54-52 - no, that is no misprint - by Milchama.

To summarise the whole game would take an age. It wasn't that great, it was just 30 two-minute drills in succession to all intents and purposes. But was it scary? You bet it was scary.

Kura-Pelland got off the mark with a field goal. Milchama responded by returning the kickoff for a touchdown. Kura-Pelland's response to that was a touchdown on the second play of their next drive. The game pretty much carried on in that vein. So many touchdowns, so little defence.

With the score at 52-49, each team having scored seven (!) touchdowns and 2:00 on the clock, Kura-Pelland had possession and the lead. But Milchama still had three timeouts, and Kura-Pelland were stuck on their own 2. A huge blitz - the first good defensive play of the entire game from Milchama - led to a safety. 52-51, Milchama possession.

'We half-expected them to go for six even then,' said safety Aaron Raygor after the game.

They did indeed keep launching long bombs. One failed. Two failed. Three failed. The fourth... failed, but a pass interference call meant Kura-Pelland had not yet won this game.

And eventually Milchama did get the field goal with ten seconds left.

The unbelievable offensive bias of this tournament has caused some to suspect these games are being played by videogames. Others point out this would not be possible with current Vephrese technology and that the games would have to be 'broadcast' from Kura-Pelland, presumably from Fariynuff.

Weekly Interview Snippett: Jason Rowett

In the latest part of our weekly series of interviews with people making headlines in the sporting world, we talk to our own Deputy Sports Editor Jason Rowett about his work, his books, and his latest column, which has caused controversy.

By Mark Perdue

The Liverpool England national gridiron team has come under increasing media spotlight recently. With scant coverage of the team's exploits leading up to and even during the World Championships, not many people even knew that the country had a gridiron team. And even then, as this newspaper's Deputy Sports Editor Jason Rowett suggested in his column three days ago, most people shrugged them off as normal, well-off athletes.

First, an update on how the team are doing. Since Jason's column the team have played their first knockout match, defeating Fedoria 30 points to 22, and by doing so making the quarter-finals, against all odds. In a statement, the Sports Ministry confirmed that it had made the necessary arrangements for a better life for a few members of the national team, including the two profiled in Jason's story, quarterback Justin Coon - who threw two touchdown passes in the second-round win - and defensive tackle Jeff Booher.

But Jason's come under fire for his column. While an opinion piece, many readers took offence at his self-admitted rather brash wording in the article, in which Jason addressed the reader directly at least twice, negatively. The offending parts, allegedly, include "[t]he public - that's most of you readers - think they're professionals making big bucks" and "[t]hey - and their plights - deserve more recognition than what we the media and you the public are giving them right now." Some people were angry that they had been targetted in apparent sweeping statements. So, we spoke to Jason to set things straight, and also about his work as deputy sports editor, and an author.

Mark Perdue (MP): Welcome to the hot seat, Jason. Let's start with the burning question, then. Your column three days ago, called "Putting a story to their names (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13192842&postcount=44)", has provoked some people into angry emails to us - and, of course, to you. Care to clear things up?
Jason Rowett (JR): You're right. It was rather brash of me to address the readers directly, but it's caught their attention, hasn't it? The aim of the piece was to let the public know about these players representing us. Also, not many people actually realise there are poor people in this country. I was not - am not - wrong to say that the public, and indeed most of the readers of our newspaper, think they're just another rich sports athlete. Indeed, on the second point I don't believe it's changed either. People - including the readers - need to give these people more recognition. As I said, not many people realise - or accept - that there are actually poor people in Liverpool England.

MP: Was it easy doing the piece? What made you decide to do it, and how did you go about it?
JR: Was it easy? It was easy to say, 'Yes, I've got to do this piece' - it was easy to decide to do it. Actually doing it was more difficult, I myself had to face up to the reality I spoke about earlier. I decided to do it after realising how horribly atrocious coverage of the lesser sports are in Liverpool England, and when I found out about the conditions and stories of some of them it was set, there was no way I would have not done the piece. Had to use some of my contacts in the right places, of course. I managed to get a Sports Ministry spokesman to talk to, who provided me with details on the scouting for players. The individual profiles were harder. Besides having to face up to the fact some of them were in horrible conditions, it was not easy getting into the places they lived to talk to people. Again, the ministry provided some of their stories.

MP: You thrive on stories.
JR: I guess I do, don't I? It's an integral part of my job. My columns almost never focus exclusively on the sports side of things. Of course, I'm the deputy sports editor, so it plays a part, but as a journalist, the human interest stories are the ones people read. So I try to combine the two, to tell a story about sports or people in sport. It's the same with my books.

MP: Let's talk about your job as deputy sports editor, then. What exactly is it that you do?
JR: Well, I edit. (laughs) And I write my weekly opinion pieces. I attend the daily editorial meetings with the sports editor, of course. I'm pretty much the go-to guy in the sports desk if anyone needs help with trivia. (laughs again) I vet stories; approve and reject them. It's always fun for me, though.

MP: You also write books on sports - four now, two on association football, one on ice hockey and your latest book. Tell us more about your writing, and also your latest book.
JR: Well, I've written a lot, especially on sports in Liverpool England. It started when I was still just a sports correspondent. I decided to do a biography on Douglas Freech, and with help from Doug himself found a good publisher. The book sold well, so I went on writing. I wrote one on the little snippets of locker-room arguments, jokes, celebrations and mud-slinging matches in football, with contributions from players and managers from over the years. My latest book is called Inside the Park, Out on the Diamond: The Story of Baseball in Liverpool England. Exactly what it says on the cover, it tracks the history of this great sport in this country, and how it managed to achieve the level of popularity it has today, when a few hundred years ago only association football was considered to be the national sport. Baseball's really rocketed up the ladder.

The Falcons blow out the barkozy team 61-10. The game started fast with an opening kick touchdown return for the barkozy team. Then on the kickoff there was a falcon fumble. Which the barkozy would recover and then four plays later kick a field goal. Then on the next drive Falcon Quaterback Gabe Martin threw a bullet pass from his own 30 into the endzone to a wide open jack cito. Then the barkozy return muffed the next kick in to the endzone, but safely fell on it for a safety. Then on third the backup Running back Jeremy jackson(after the safety punt) ran the ball in from the 40 for a touchdown to make it 15-10. Then Gramatica ended the quater with a 47 yard Field goal.
To start the second Alais Patrick intercepted a pass on defense and ran it in for a touchdown making it 25-10. Then Shawn Plank the nose tackle picked up the barkozian quaterbacks dropped snap and ran it in making it 32-10. Then at the end of the second Rudi Williams the starting running back ran the ball in for his own touchdown.
Starting the third of with a 39-10 lead the Falcons had a commanding lead. They would only add to it in the second half. Martin hit ocho cinco for yet another touchdown making the scoere a 36 point lead 46-10 for the falcons. Then in an unsuprisin move the falcons scored again on a 45 yard hook up between Martin and Ricky Zellefrow.
The forth started with the falcons up 53-10. Then Amazingly (sarcastic) backup Quaterback Alec dega hit Alais Patrick for his second touchdown on the game, But the snap for the extra point went haywire right to gramatica and on a day were everything went right for the Falcons He hits Tight end Ernie smith in the endzone to end the game with a huge 61-10 win for the Taeshan team.

Hey Bob, we are in the last eight.

Last eight, last eight of what?

Griddling World Championships?

What?

Griddling World Championships. Something about chasing eggs. We have a Quarterback and an Offence etc.

You fool Steve, thats Gridiron, American Football, its our new national sport.

It is?

Yes, it is. We have finally found something we are good at. We haven't lost a game and we are the highest scoring team in the competition by a mile.

We are? How come?

Well, it turns out that throwing and running and catching is really easy. Not a difficult game like Rugby or Real Football. You don't need any skill, just the ability to run in armour and knock people over.

Ah. Who are we playing next?

Milchama, apparently they are very good.

Well, lets hope they have an off day....................................

In a tournament that has been unexpectedly dominated by high-powered offenses, Vephrall has been no exception, averaging nearly 40 points per game with a 4-1 record so far. Vephrall's defense, however, has been arguably even more solid, allowing 30 or more points only once in a 58-34 win over Bostopia (though it would've been twice if not for an apparently uncaught error on the part of the scoreboard operator in the second Taeshan game; a safety at the end of the game was for some reason counted as only one point rather than two, producing a 29-27 Taeshan win instead of 30-27).

In the second round game against Oliverry, the Vephrese team jumped out to a 23-0 lead midway through the third quarter before the Oliverrian offense suddenly got a kickstart when a missed tackle by linebacker Nastadgus Wilopteere resulted in the Oliverry halfback running the ball for 74 yards to give his team first and goal from the 7. Over the course of about fifteen minutes, Oliverry proceeded to fight their way back to 26-21 with help from two very long touchdown passes of 92 and 64 yards. Vephrall scored another touchdown with about eight minutes remaining, but Oliverry wasn't done. Despite a failed fourth-down conversion with three minutes left on the clock, the Vephrall offense proved to be very poor with clock management on its next drive and was three and out in under a minute. Two long passes later, Oliverry was in the end zone and trailing by only five points, but with just 50 seconds remaining on the clock and no more timeouts. A failed onside kick would seal their fate, with the Vephrall quarterback taking a knee to hold on for the 33-28 victory.

But there is trouble ahead for Team Vephrall as they go up against Qazox, quite possibly the strongest team in the tournament. They're 5-0, having scored 221 points (44.2 ppg) and allowed just 71 (14.2 ppg). It's certain to take a Herculean defensive effort to contain these guys.

Milchama in semis, nation in shock

In a rare event in Milchama, the Hunters, our national football team, are in the semifinals of a tournament after surviving two outrounds already and are against Taeshan. Most people expect a rout with a lot of points scored on both sides. This is certainly something that would be expected of the Hunters with their lack luster defense that has not given up less than 29 points in one game. But it all doesn't matter as the Hunters have scored over 50 points the last two games including a 54 point effort against Kura Pelland in octafinals.

In the most recent game against Mattarsland...

"No wonder these things stopped going out to the world they're boring"

"I know"

"Well then what did we do"

"No idea but we won and that's all that matters"

"Come on you Warriors!"

Qazox stunned in OT Thriller 44-50

Qazox finally ran into a team that could do what Qazox does well, run the ball. Vephrall, lead by RB Wassaraat Mocks, battered the Qazox defense with a healthy dose of its own medicine, raushing for 278 yds. But Qazox didn't come to a gun fight with a knife either, as Kevin Hertz ran for 296 yds. But the weakspot for Qazox, it's passing attack and it's special teams, cost them this game, as the final score against the team was the same as the 1st score, a kickoff return for a TD, that sent Qazox home too early for most following a blocked FG attempt by Pollack with 0:07 left by Praumbeted Mantlom.

Qazox offered one-game playoff

In a twist to the Gridiron World Championships, from which Liverpool England have been eliminated by Taeshan 31-24, the national coach Julian Howe offered Qazox, the tournament favourites - that is, until they lost to hosts Vephrall, a one-game playoff. Speaking on the line from Vephrall, Howe told National Enquirer reporter Mark Perdue that his team weren't ready to leave just yet.

"The boys are all bitterly disappointed that we've lost. I'm very proud that this bunch of lads have come all this way and managed to cause a few surprises and upsets. After a team meeting we decided that we weren't ready to leave the tournament just yet, so I've emailed the organisers, as well as the Qazox team, a proposal for a one-game fifth-placed playoff.

"Even if the organisers don't want it to be an official position playoff we hope Qazox will accept it as an unofficial one. It would let the boys play one final game before everyone goes back to playing rugby and their lives, and it would allow us to savour the thrill of playing gridiron for our national team one more time."

A note to all potential hosts of any competition: if you're building your own scorinator, make sure you know ALL the ins and outs of the competition. Stupid me, who only watches football at the college level, made an incorrect assumption here. :( The way the scorinator is set up, it treats an overtime period just like another quarter of action. (And with the person doing my matches being Australian, he wasn't likely to catch the problem. :p)

Yes, I'll accept 50-44 as the final score.

(ooc: Either way I lost, at least 44-50 seems better than 44-58, which in the NCAA can happen. The 1st team scores a TD and gets the 2-pt conversion, then on the 2nd team's possesion, team 1 gets a fumble recovery or INT and runs it back for a TD. just in case you are wondering YES it has happened. Back in 95 or 96 a Div 3 team did it, but i can't remember which team. But it was on GameDay that night.)

Qazox accepts the match vs. Liverpool England. (if Vephrall wouldn't mind scorinating it)

So the champions of the taeshan a league in football are the Mighty ducks of Atlantea with a 31-0 win over the Fadron Seabulls. Well in other football scores the national team the Purple knights oh wait im sorry this is the gridiron championships that means the falcons. Well either way they meet LE in the final eight so at least they could finish 3rd. At least dog with Gabe Martin and ocho cinco practically playing keep away from the other team we might win it all. So anyway today may have been an offensive cushball if you will if Martin Gramatica hadnt made a huge 6 kicks to tie the game after 3, but in the fourth the falcons would win it on a last minute drive Martin threw the ball on fourth down to win it in the last tenth of a second. Zellefrow made an awesome catch that would be looked at four for ours() Tjhen said it was caught.

Zephyrs on Victorious Path

VEPHRALL - With the Gridiron Football World Championships underway, it is a bit surprising to see a Yaforite team in the mix at the top. Typically, the Grand Democratic Duchy has fielded teams that rely on intelligence and are not at the top in such bodily sports as Gridiron Football. But what may seem a surprise to some is no surprise to the Yaforite players. "We belong here." Star Linebacker Kalid Jioran says confidently. With the tournament winding down to its final stages and the Grand Democratic Duchy playing in the semifinal against hosts Vephrall, the Yaforite team is showing that not only do they belong, but they are also among the top teams in the world.

Quarterback Darimir Corionlis has lead the charge of the offense, which has put nearly every game beyond doubt. Corionlis, in the six games of the tournament, has thrown for 3,040 yards and 28 touchdowns, while totally dominating nearly every offense that he has come across. He has carried the offense, which has had to rely on a run game that is nearly nonexistent. Corionlis has been modest about his achievements, however, in a typical Yaforite fashion, talking mostly about the "team" and the "team"'s priorities. The truth is, however, that without Corionlis and the strong defensive line, this team would not be anywhere close to where it is now.

The receivers that Corionlis uses have helped him immensely, as well. Typically, the Zephyrs use three wide receivers and a tight end and these have been the most successful Yaforite receivers overall. Corionlis' favorite target has been Ateranon Varanos, the speedy long-man, who has outrun many a world-class corner. Varanos has caught for nearly a thousand yards, close to one-third of the total of Corionlis' yards. "The tandem of Varanos and Corionlis has proved too much for the defenses, who are finding it difficult to cover the speedy wide-out, while having trouble getting pressure anywhere near Corionlis." says one expert, who seems sold on Zephyr success.

The defense has been the key to Zephyr success thus far in the tournament, however. During the group stage, it was the Grand Democratic Duchy who had the best defense in the league. The Zephyr team boasts one of the best linebacking corps in the world, lead by Jioran, Kalis Daans, and Huntrain Hiliancair. These three have been lethal stopping the run (which has accounted for the grand total of one touchdown against the Yaforite team), while still succeeding in coverage. They have been dangerous in both areas, as one foreign coach explains. "Daans, Jioran and Hiliancair are the key to this defense." he says, "to beat them, you have to stop these three guys."

Of course, it has helped a lot to have strong defensive line and secondary. The team has had close to twenty-five sacks, and has hurried opposing quarterbacks time and time again, while not letting them get the ball off. The second part of the dangerous equation is the secondary, which has had barely any trouble covering opponents and their wide receivers. The majority of opposing yardage has, in fact, been gained by tight ends, who the defense is allowing the short passes to, in exchange for stopping the big play. That has been, overall, the biggest skill of the defense - stopping the big play.

Next up in the semifinal is Vephrall, the host nation, and a team that relies heavily on the run. This should bode well for the Yaforite side, who have been dominant against the run. In that, it all comes down to Corionlis, and whether he can get off his passes in time. He has been successful at that in the past.

[OOC: Best I can get off now.]

From the sports section of the Meice Journal:

Qazox 44, Vephrall 50

It took six games for someone to finally figure out the Qazox defense. Vephrall running back Wassaraat Mocks ended up being that someone, gaining a very impressive 278 yards on the ground as he helped his national team to a narrow 50-44 overtime victory over arguably the most talented team in the competition, Qazox.

The game remained close throughout, with neither team gaining a lead of greater than seven points at any time. Mocks ended up running for three* touchdowns on the night, with another touchdown run by Cuizamed Wilopteere and a 49-yard reception by Denosone Solivasas in addition to field goals from 21*, 38, and 50 yards completing the Vephrese team's scoring in regulation. As expected, the Qazox running game was also superb, with Kevin Hertz lighting up the Vephrall defense for just shy of 300 yards.

An impressive kickoff return after Hertz' third TD run gave Qazox a 44-41 lead gave Vephrall possession on the Qazox 40 with less than two minutes to go. Three plays gave Vephrall only seven yards, and faced with 4th and 3 on the 33 they decided to go the safe route, with Cothasat successfully kicking a field goal to tie the game with 26 seconds left on the clock. Qazox managed to fight their way into field goal range with 7 seconds remaining, but Praumbeted Mantlom made himself a national hero by blocking the kick and sending the game into overtime.

The overtime period turned out to be short and sweet. A Qazox kickoff into the end zone was caught by Celtuars Baspaalt, and somehow all the blockers were in the right place at the right time. Twelve seconds and 102 yards later, Baspaalt was in the other end zone and Vephrall was celebrating a 50-44 win.

"I couldn't believe what had just happened," Baspaalt commented with regard to his kickoff return that put his team into the semifinals. "I'm still not sure I can."

Vephrall will face Yafor 2 in the semifinals, and must be prepared to face an altogether different offensive setup; just as much as Qazox relies on its running game, the Yaforites go to the air. Quarterback Darimir Corionlis has averaged an eye-popping 507 yards passing per game, and the Vephrall secondary has shown itself so far to be little more than average. Arguably the key for Yafor 2 in the game, however, is to keep the ball on the ground, as Yafor 2's offensive line shouldn't have too much trouble opening up a few holes for its running game against its Vephrese counterpart. For Vephrall, the strategy should remain pretty much the same: Mocks and company will likely be picking up the lion's share of the yardage on the ground, with Yafor 2's very impressive linebackers and secondary likely to make any aerial efforts difficult at best.

It was an awful first half for the Falcons opening up by letting the milchaman team score 6 tds and missing an ep to lead 41-0 at half, but in the third Gabe martin threw 3 tds to ocho cinco and then in the fourth another 2 to zellefrow. Then jeremy jackson ran in two to lead 49-41. Then Gramatica would make a FG. Finally do to a streaker from milchama trying to distract the Falcon defense on the milchamans the falcons were alloted another point.

I've been thinking about hosting an American Football Championship as my big contribution to the NS Community, and am very willing to do it. I'm just not sure if there is enough interest since the football of choice on this board isn't the American version. ;)

I'm not to thrilled about the high scores that I see posted here though, and I actually have, what I feel, is a great idea in using the Soccer scorinator to create more normal (American) football scores.

I would take the lead on the project if there was interest.
