The Oriental Football Cup
La Copa Oriéntale de Fútbol

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t156/daehanjeiguk/DYCGGP-1.png

The Imperial Football Association of Daehanjeiguk (the Great Han Empire) wishes to invite those countries that adhere to the following requirements in a new football tournament in the Empire proper. The purpose of this tournament is to bring together the history and heritage of worldwide ethnic Han peoples, to include the commonly called peoples of "Korea", "China", and the "Philippines". For this reason, the Imperial Football Association feels it is most appropriate for the home Empire to host this tournament to bring back the descendants of those many progenitors of the ethnic Han abroad. By hosting this tournament, we wish to test the bonds of familial strength and learn of the fate of our brothers and sisters abroad, and to forge a new friendship with those countries that host these populations. It is with great pleasure that the IFA announces the inaugural Oriental Football Cup.

---=+++=---=+++=xxx=+++=---=++++---
Countries wishing to participate in the Tournament must satisfy the following requirements:

The country must be recognized by the Imperial Ministry of Foreign Affairs; OR
The country must have a sizable population of ethnic Han (Korean/Mandarin/Cantonese/Chinese/Filipino), whose heritage has in some part contributed to the country's modern establishment; OR
The country must have a significant population of ethnicities considered to possess a heritage closely tied to ethnic Han heritage (Japanese/Vietnamese/Thai/Malay/Mongolian), whose heritage has in some part contributed to the country's modern establishment; OR
The country must have declared its official languages to be the same as those of the Empire (Korean/Chinese); OR
The country must have been at one time a protectorate or tributary state of the Empire in its history.

Those countries wishing to participate must supply proof of the requirements established.

The Tournament style has not been yet announced, but it is expected that the tournament style will be simple and accomodate all teams, regardless of their skill level. For this reason, it is widely suspected that the tournament will follow the format employed by the Qazox Oxen Cup 2 (Swiss Style). IFA officials have not confirmed this statement, principally because the tournament has just opened, and it is uncertain how many ethnic Han descendants will register for the tournament.

Thanks to Ariddia for NSWikifying this Cup before I could (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Oriental_Football_Cup).

The Ariddian Arctic Islands (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Ariddian_Arctic_Islands) will cobble together a team. It may contain a few Ariddian players too, exclusively of Han ethnic descent. Arctic Islander players themselves will include people of Korean, Wymgani, Indigenous Arctic Islander (Northern European) and mixed ethnic descent.

The Ariddian Arctic Islands - as per our previous discussion - has been accepted to compete in the tournament. And we wish them well. Although no formal relations have been established, the IFA has received permission to grant access to the Empire for any and all Ariddian citizens wishing to watch the team participate in the tournament. We furthermore anticipate the arrival of other ethnic Han teams.

ooc: what do you perceive is their KPB ranking and what playing style to you prefer for them?

The Ariddian Arctic Islands have no KPB ranking, and it's not customary to invent one. Of course, there'll have a few Ariddian players, and Ariddia's current rank is apparently 3, so if you want to make up a "rank", feel free.

As for playing style... Maybe just a little less "attacking" than Ariddia. Perhaps +2 or +3 on a scale from -5 to +5.

After hours of researching various family tries, the EFA and ESC have produced a primarally oriental-descent team to represent the ESF in this Oriental Cup.

Uniforms
http://i25.photobucket.com/albums/c58/Krytenia/ESF31.png

Style Modifier: +3

Manager
Asanta Webber
Age - 20,430
Has lead the Rinaldi Gunners from being the small market club that everybody thought to be easy points to one of the elite sides in the Premiership. He likes his squads to play a possessive style of game, with a direct approach through the middle. However, with the talent on the wings that he has for this squad, there are talks about him adjusting his tactics accordingly, to incoropate the spectuclar winger he never has been able to bring to Rinaldi.

Assistant Manager
Sag Yan
Age - 17,896
Somewhat of controversial choice to be the understudy to Webber, with only having two years of managing under his belt. Yan defends his selection as the assistant with his "youthful" zest and ability to really understand the needs of the players. Despite the easy to get to side, Yan was notoriously known for his stamina training back when he was just the fitness coach at the Gladerial Twilight. He will make sure that all of the squad is in the best of shape to perform at their highest levels for the competition.

Keeper
4 Manuel Lee, Sharala FC
Age - 1207
Sex - M
A decent keeper who uses his tall frame to its fullest extent. What keeps him back from rising to the elite in the nation is the lack of consistancy. All too often he will have a stellar game where nothing can penetrate his net, followed up by a game where he can't save the most basic of shots. He only does get the nod due to having more expierence than Jacoby, but should he not perform up to snuff, Lolita is poised to come in at a moments notice. Whether this short leath is a good motivator or an inhibitor will be an interesting storyline to follow.

Defenders
13 Tagouchi Mahaska, Char Sara Inferno
Age - 883
Sex - M
Overshadowed by the national teamer, Gabriel Florez, Tagouchi does not get enough credit he deserves for being the solid contributor at the back. He lacks a great deal of pace, but makes up for it for having great positioning and technique. His great grandfather was the first person of Oriental descent to ever hold a public office, being a judge in Char Sara from 17,624-17,630, before running for Senator in 17,635, but falling short by the closest of margins. Tagouchi was extremely pleased when the EFA informed him of his selection and hopes to honor his ethnicity and country with great pride.

5 Quinton Sars, Wexax United
Age - 786
Sex - M
Despite moving to the expansion side, Sars has quite a reputation as a up and coming talent. Having come through the Valanari Footballing Academy, he knows the game inside and out, and has used his years at the academy to tweak his game into being one of the best young centerbacks the country has. With his knowledge of the game, he is the assistant captain and takes over the duty whenever Yin is on the bench.

19 Apolla Wie, Juavi Reds
Age - 637
Sex - F
Another product of the many footballing acadamies in the nation, Wie came through the newer Night Footballing Academy in Raynor City. Established by the great Zacharius and Kyla Night, Apolla was gifted with some of the best intructors and managers to have taken to the pitch in the ESF. While not the best of markers, she has the footwork to make the best of her frame when in close quarters with her mark.

Midfielders
27 Alex Wahn, Raynor City Rockers
Age - 794
Sex - M
A tough and versatile man in the middle. His pace is his greatest strength, and he has learned to use it quite effectively on breakout runs and supporting his backline in the crunch. Not the best midfielder ever, but definately not the worst either.

32 Roger Zensan, Cathedral Spooks (Assegai)
Age - 946
Sex - M
A great distributor of the ball, he is the perfect mold for the attacking central midfielder that the squad employs. After a great career with the Mar Sara Flames, he went on to the Assegai squad and was a key contributor in their run to the second place finish they had last season. He looks to put an exclamation on his career with this Cup appearance and hopefully a call for the next World Cup qualifiers.

12 Kawi Marl, FC Longview
Age - 841
Sex - F
One of the two leading ladies that always help keep FC Longview performing better than expected. This winger delivers a beauty of a cross and is good enough on her marking to play in the center when the need calls for it. Like most of the squad, she has a mind numbing pace but can keep it up for the full ninety minutes unlike the majority of her comrades.

6 Christina Osarius, Baysleef Bombers
Age - 589
Sex - F
Although this young lady has yet to become a regular at Baysleef, she usually factors in the outcome of the match. Unlike Marl who can play in the middle, Christina is exclusively a winger. Her first touch is suspect, but when she settles the ball, it is a difficult job stripping her of it. Her crossing is pretty hit and miss, but when it is on, she delivers a cross just as pin point as anyone else who plays the game.

Strikers
2 Yan Kips, Raynor City Rockers
Age - 911
Sex - M
With soo many talented strikers in the nation, Yan has never been granted the oppurtunity to show his class at the top level. When he learned that the nation was contemplating enter this culture Cup, he leaped at the oppurtunity to do finally don his national colors. Finishing in the top twenty in scoring last season, with eighteen goals in thirty-six appearances, he knows how to find the back of the net and often.

15 Zeph Yan Yin, Hondo Owls
Age - 1046
Sex - M
One of the best pure strikers in the Premiership, he made quite the splash when Hondo was promoted from the Star League. Having spent the majority of his career in the lower leagues is the only reason why this dangerous forward has not seen international duty. His scoring touch is only behind that of Kiso Night and Jere Jannian in the Premiership when it comes to ESF-born players.

9 Trian Defecta, Hondo Owls
Age - 910
Sex - M
While not the all around great striker that Yin is, Defecta is one of the hardest working players this squad has. His dribbling skils might be completely non-existant, but he works hard to get into great positions to knock in goals whenever the oppurtunity presents itself. He is one of the best headers of the balls, and does tend to score the majority of his talleys in this fashion.

Subs
29 GK Lolita Jacoby - age 1178 - FC Capri (F)
30 DF Vern Nu - age 913 - AC Cartmot (M)
7 DF Bianca Sigma - age 701 - Kareen FC (F)
1 MF Xanxz - age 890 - Underground United (Assegai) (M)
16 MF Dorian Sonja - age 1035 - FC Longview (F)
57 MF Dorec Zizzn - age 749 - Mar Sara Flames (M)
20 AF Samuel Tatum - age 1076 - Gisenyi (Interhamwe) (M)
10 AF Yoshido Manuka - age 820 - Baysleef Bombers (M)

bumping for interest.

Also, thanx to ESF for providing a mostly Oriental team; it is much appreciated. If I don't get much more interest, I'll hopefully find a fourth team to enter "forcibly" and we'll have a simple 4 team draw-off. Otherwise, I'll leave this open until after the Francophone Cup - to offer Ariddia some extra time. Also, I'm joining in the Qazox Cup again, so I'll probably draw up another roster to compete in this tournament. Of course, since no one's putting up their "full" teams, I've decided to screw ranks and KPB; this will be a completely open cup, where the primary influence on a team's competitiveness is their playing style and their RPing bonus. Hopefully, this is all agreeable to everyone.
Sorthern Northland
24-08-2007, 14:05
The Eastern Westlands of Sorthern Northland owes much to the Korean, and Chinese communities of Sorthern Northland. The Korean and Chinese were bought in as slaves by the leaders of Northland, the nation of which Sorthern Northland was formally a province of. Sorthern Northland won it's freedom in a revolution that came to be known as the October Revolution. The October Revolution is commonly referred to as the Irish revolution as it was led by mainly Irish settlers. However without the support of the Korean and Chinese in the revolution Sorthern Northland may never have got it's freedom. This is recognised by the majority of Sorthern Northlanders, and as a thank you the leader of the revolution gave all slaves in Sorthern Northland emancipation and the opportunity to become residents of this new nation. Some went back to Korea and Japan, but a large number decided to stay.

Most towns in Sorthern Northland have at least one Chinatown or Koreatown district. The most famous of these are in the nations capital Beningrad. Although the Korean and Chinese communities usually get on peacefully with each other, violence between the two communities has recently grown and is near to a state of emergency. In a bid to recognise the impotence of these two communities in the nations history and to hopefully bring peace back to the two communities, Sorthern Northland would like to send a team represented by players from the Koreatown/Chinatown districts of Beningrad. The team will be lead by national team members from the Korean/Chinese communities such as Chinese winger Feng Shui, and Korean striker Kim Min-Kim.

The OFC administrators accept Sorthern Northland's entry into the tournament. With that, we have a simple set of four teams, and it is now possible to have a close knit competition.

OFC administrators have also announced a the prize for winning the tournament:

250,000,000元 (470.125 USD)
Rights to host the Golden Dragon Trophy until next OFC
If the champion team is from a country not officially recognized by the Imperial Government, and there is no reason barring formal relations, the Imperial Ministry will automatically establish relations with the country
The name of the team and team players shall written in gold on the OFC Plaque (in Korean, of course - it's much simpler than Chinese...)

The Trophy:

The Plaque:

http://i159.photobucket.com/albums/t156/daehanjeiguk/plaque.png

If more people are interested, we can get a more reasonable competition started. Otherwise, I am happy that three other teams have signed up - with two of them hosting ethnic Han populations. In my book, this is already a great success.
Kiryu-shi
25-08-2007, 03:08
To whom it may concern,

____Kiryu-shi, a nation founded by a small population of Ainu/Utari people after they were driven out violently from Northern Japan in 1669. Kiryu-shi grew over time as Japanese people, sympathetic to the indigenous people and willing to establish trade relations, reached out and made contact with the small nation in throughout the 18th century. Although Kiryu-shi has grown and changed over the last 200 years, the beginnings of the country will never be forgotten, and we are proud of our heritage. One of our national languages is Japanese, and we have even kept Although there are hardly any people who are still completely of Japanese or Ainu/Utari ethnicity, it is estimated that around half of the population have at least a few drops of the oldest Kiryu-shi blood. Although there have been internal disputes over the question of this tournament, in the end, we have decided to request an invitation. Our roster, if we are request is confirmed, will be made up of players who are able to trace their ancestors back to the Japanese or Ainu/Utari people. Our team will be highlighted by several players on the last World Cup squad, such as Pat Mayberry, Jon Crow and Kazuko Machihara, and our coach will be retired former international player, Hiromichi Mason. We would be honored to compete in the first Oriental Football Cup, in the nation of Daehanjeiguk.

-Jack Rick, Senior Vice President of International Relations, Kiryu-shi Football Alliance

We extend our invitation and accept Kiryu-shi's entry into the tournament. We are now settled at 5 teams.

Just for future reference, I probably won't start the tournament until after Labor Day (September 3rd for those who are not familiar with American holidays, even though many people recognize Labor Day as May 1st... for various reasons).

After a vote amongst the team, the ESC will like to announce that the squad will enter each of their games and the opening cermony with the coat of arms at the lead, with the national flag behind the squad. After having the Coat of Arms commishioned by the impierial designers of Mexihco, for World Cup 34 and the armed forces, it was not used again for the following cups. However with a hint of symbolitic images of the Oriental origins, it is the perfect banner to lead this squad as it prepares for the upcoming matches.

Sorthern Northland
02-09-2007, 17:33
On the eve of the first Oriental Football Cup, the SNFA have announced the 15 man squad for the team from Sorthern Northland.

Manager: Feng Shui, 78 year old who will also be a member of the playing team, was one of the stars of Sorthern Northland Oxen Cup 2 campaign and is a hugely popular member of the national team. Not the fastest member of the team by any means but his trickery with his feet more than make up for a lack of pace.

Goalkeepers

1: Kim Suk-Yang: 17 year old from the streets of Beningrad's Koreatown, his family fled to Sorthern Northland from Pyongyang during the Korean War. An eccentric keeper who is and excellent shot stopper but prone to errors.

13: Li Yang: 18 year old goalkeeper of Chinese descent, can often be found in the Chinese gangs that walk Chinatown in Beningrad. Recently signed a professional contract with Beningrad FC and is a keeper of great promise who is widely tipped to become a star of the national team as long as he stays away from the gangland wars that have recently erupted between Sorthern Northland's Korean and Chinese communities.

Defenders

2: Dong Lee-Si: 19 year old right back, straight outa Koreatown, well known around the Beningrad restaurant scene as the chef at one of the top Korean restaurants in Beningrad, one of the few members of the Korean community that currently is accepted by both Koreans and Chinese, has been instrumental in getting gang leaders to call a ceasefire recently. On the pitch he is an attacking wing back who bombs down the right sending in precise right foot crosses, can't use his left foot to save his life though.

3: Ju Jaeyang: Explosive 23 year old left back, recently released from prison. Since his release he has vowed not to lead a life of crime again and has set up workshops in both Chinatown and Koreatown to educate teenagers on the dangers of crime and has been successful in setting up a youth team for children and teenagers from the Chinese and Korean communities called China-Korea Unity Youth.

5: Hong Song-Bong: 21 year old centre back who recently settled in Sorthern Northland, he is strong in the tackle and has pace to burn, is a major threat going forward for set pieces although his positioning does leave a lot to be asked.

6: Wang Li: Strong centre back who also puts in 110% and lets nothing get in between him and the ball, a game where he does not receive a yellow card is a rarity. Has excellent positioning but due to is lack of height is inept at dealing with high balls, and not much of a threat at set pieces.

12: Ju Ju-Lee: Utility man who can play anywhere across the defence, nothing spectacular but a useful deputy to have when any of the defenders are out.

Midfielders

7: Seol Kim-Hyuk: Right winger with bags of skill, often criticised for not putting in enough effort, but when he plays well he is almost unstoppable. Fantastic in when facing one player, less effective when surrounded by a number of players. Is excellent with both feet and his head, a perceived laziness and lack of speed can let him down.

11: Feng Shui: 78 year old player-manager of the team. Immensely popular member of the national team who was until recently the teams record goalscorer. Not the fastest player in the world, but his skill with his feet is spectacular. Has scored 11 in 11 appearances for the national team.

10: Xeng Xung: 21 year old creative midfielder who likes to be the playmaker, is a great passer of the ball and is equally adapt with his left foot or his right foot. Is very temperamental and will become easily wound up when things aren't going his way. A similar sort of player to Zidane.

8: Gung Ho-Suk: 23 year old combative central midfielder, who plays a deeper from defensive role than Xeng Xung, an excellent tackler who is not arfraid to put himself where it hurts. Similar sort of player to Gennaro Gattuso.

14: Song Lee: Another utility player, can play anywhere across the midfield and is an adequate if not great backup.

Forwards

8: Jing Mao: Strong centre forward with an eye for goal, can hold players off well and is excellent if given space. Hi is however prone to mistakes when closed down and pushed out wide.

9: Kim Min-Kim: 21 year old star of the national team and the current joint record appearance holder and record goalscorer for the national team with 12 goals in 21 appearances. Is strong in the air and excellent with both feet. As well as scoring goals he creates lots of goals as well.

15: Kang Kan-Kang: A reserve for the national team and looks like being third choice striker here as well. Has impressed when he has made cameo's for the national team with 3 goals in 4 games. the 18 year old is a big prospect for the future and will look to use his strength to score in the box. A predatory sort of player who is best in the box.

Formation is 4-4-2 with a style modifier of +5.

Latest news from the Ariddian Arctic Islanders' team

Song to coach team for Oriental Cup

The Arctic Islanders now have a confirmed coach - one of their own. Aush Song (성 아웃), now aged 55, is the only Ariddian Arctic Islands-born player ever to have played with the Rouge-et-Noirs. He is also the husband of former football star Hanifah Kyaw (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Hanifah_Kyaw), and now lives with his family in Ariddia. Song has said he is "greatly honoured" at the opportunity to coach his homeland's team.

"The Islands have never made a big splash in international football, but there's a lot of interest in football there, a lot of untapped talent. I know we'll all be giving our very best in this competition."

Cassie Lee (이 갔이) injured in Errinundera

There has been significant concern after confirmation of the report that the world's best football player (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12995356&postcount=657), and goalkeeper of the Ariddian Arctic Islands for the Oriental Cup, has been injured in Errinundera.

Lee works as a firefighter in her husband's homeland, and was reportedly injured while at work. When a local business was torched (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Corporate_Torching) in Combienbar, Lee was among the firefighters attempting to put out the blaze. She entered the building to make sure nobody was trapped inside, but then became trapped herself on the first floor when an unexpected explosion on the ground floor caused the stairway to be engufled in flames. Lee had to jump out of the window, a seven metre fall which resulted in a sprained ankle. She has reportedly stated that she will recover in time to compete in the Oriental Cup.

Lee at an interview in Uhuh-Ropa several years ago. Lee is distantly related to the Uhuh-Ropean imperial family.

At the age of 37, Lee is appearing in international football for the last time. As her father's father is an Ariddian Arctic Islander, she holds Arctic Islands citizenship by descent.

Ariddian singer of Han ethnicity to perform anthems at the Oriental Cup?

Chang Xue (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Chang_Xue) (창 수에, 張 雪) is arguably Ariddia's most famous singer, songwriter and musician. An immigrant from the Unified Capitalizt States (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Unified_Capitalizt_States), she sings many of her songs in Syokaji (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Syokaji), a language closely derived from Korean. She also sings in Chinese and in French.

Now the Ariddian Football Association is suggesting that Ms. Chang could sing the national anthems of nations participating in the Oriental Cup, at the beginning of each match. Chang has said she would be delighted to.

"Perhaps as a duo, with a male vocalist from the Han Empire?" she suggested.

http://img207.imageshack.us/img207/2158/arisinger2bx9.jpg
Chang Xue, born and raised in the Korean region of the UCS (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Unified_Capitalizt_States), is Ariddia's most famous singer.

The idea has met with approval from the Ariddian Arctic Islands, but has raised one mildly problematic issue.

"The Ariddian Arctic Islands have no official national anthem of their own," Aush Song explained. "We generally use the instrumental version (http://folk.ntnu.no/makarov/temporary_url_20060919zkkfg/internationale-instr-defence_ministry_nazarov_1977.mp3) of the Ariddian anthem (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Dream). Presumably Comrade Chang would be singing the Ariddian anthem?"

The Islands are not an independent nation, but a "semi-autonomous Ariddian overseas territory". They were first offered independence in 1985, but the offer was declined. It remains open, and the Islands have the legal right to declare independence unilaterally at any time of their choosing.

With the sign-ups closed, the inaugural edition of the Oriental Football Cup is set to start very soon. Though small, the Cup boasts wide ranging talents from Oriental peoples from around the world. The Han diaspora has found its home in many notable teams, and with the introduction of but a few of these, the Imperial Football Association offers its gratitude to the participants and to the players for venturing far and wide to attend this homily setting.

All matches are to be played in Emperor Gojong Football Stadium in Hangyeong, and every team will have a chance to compete against one another in this five-country invitational. The set-up shall be a simple round-robin tournament, with the top ranked team winning the prize of the tournament. No draws will be permitted, with all even scores sent into extra time and penalty kicks. Because we have five participants, four teams will compete during one matchday, and the remaining team will pass the date on a bye. In this manner, after five days, all five teams will have played against the other once.

The first matchday is scheduled for September 5th with scores posted at 0000GMT:

Ariddian Arctic Islands --- Elves Security Forces
Sorthern Northland --- Kiryu-shi

Meeting of the Minds

With just days away, two members of the squad selected to go to the inagural Oriental Cup spoke to the media on the squads behalf. Kawi Marl and Zeph Yan Yin, both pictured below, answered numerous questions from both domestic and foriegn reporters. While the questions were numerous, it was their answers to a select one that really made headlines, which I have listed below for your convience.

Reporter: How do you feel that this Cup will effect other Orientals in the country when it comes to trying to achieve thier dreams for playing on the national team? Also, do you see yourselves as heros or pioneers for being selected to this squad?

Zeph: Well I hope that this team and this entire Cup not only shows other athletes of Oriental decent, but all athletes, that if you work hard and you do the things you should, you can achieve your dreams. Whether that dream is to play for your national team, or merely make one of the regional teams that play games on Sundays after the big boys play on Saturday, it can be done so long as you go about it the right way. As for being heros, nah man. All that we are are atheletes who have gotten the chance to represent their country, and to any professional athlete, that is all you ever dreamed of doing, and it's why do you everything you do to make your skill amongst the best.

Kawi: I agree with Zeph that this is bigger than just our heritage and ethnicity, this is more about telling all the kids out there that if we can do it, so can you. Although I do think us as semi heros, after all, not often does one get to see ones ultimate dreams come true like this. And to be representing our communities like this, it really kinda makes you sit back and just think of how awesome the world is. If a little girl from the outskirts of Kareen can grow up and be a professional footballer and represent her country, then there just might be some good in the world afterall.

With the schedule released, Kawi and Zeph will have to be ready for a stern first test as they will be going up against a very hard Ariddian squad. Whether this artic islanders squad is as great as thier full senior national team is yet to be known, but it can be expected that they will likely be on the level and possess a great amount of skill. It is the class of the coach that will detirmine which of these skilled line ups will get the victory, as both squads will likely be using a 3-4-3 formation. Fans should be in a treat for goals, with both keepers, ironically both with the Surname of Lee, hoping to do just enough to keep their team on the right side of the barrage.

The Oriental Football Cup I Kiryu-shi Preview

By Rebecca Doig

Sakaino, Kiryu-shi The Kiryu-shi national football team will be entering the first ever Oriental Football Cup in the upcoming months prior to their bids qualifying for a World Cup. This tournament will be a chance for different players in the Kiryu-shi Sakaino University Football training academy to participate in real international level soccer. A few regulars on the “A” squad are set to make the trip to Daehanjeiguk, and the rest of the players are part of the prestigious football academy. The one unifying factor among all of the players are their heritage. Using the vigorous research of the historians in Sakaino University, the officials in the Kiryu-shi Football Alliance put together a team of players who are at least a quarter Japanese, Ainu or Han. The coach will be former reserve player for the National team, ethnically half-Japanese, and one of the smartest football players to ever set foot on the field at Sakaino, Hiro Mason. At 38 years of age, he is also one of the assistant coaches of the National Team and is a possible replacement for Bruce Lewis, if he ever chooses to retire.

The roster that Kiryu-shi is brining to Daehanjeiguk is as follows, with 1-11 as the starters:

Oriental fever hits Sorthern Northland

With just hours to go before Sorthern Northland's first Oriental Cup game against Kiryu-shi, the nation was been swept by Oriental fever. With citizens keen to back the nation's representative team, they have been keen to sample the delights of the Korean and Chinese communities in the nation. Gang leaders from the Koreatown and Chinatown gangs also called a ceasefire and promised to enter talks with each other in a move which has effectively reopened the Chinatown and Koreatown districts of the Sorthern Northland.

The squad set off to Daehanjeiguk this morning and in a short interview with SNTV team manager Feng Shui expressed his excitement at the tournament by saying how excited he was and pointed towards the ceasefire to show what a difference it has made already to the Chinese and Korean communities. The 82 year old also expressed his desire to carry on playing football saying "I am fit and healthy and have no desire to retire, I want to carry on playing until at least I am 100".

Sorthern Northland winger and manager of the SN Oriental team Feng Shui.

Also looking forward to the tournament is 17 year old Jing Mao. "The other two forwards are both in the national team and that's where I want to be, and if I can get myself into the first eleven then that means one of them will be on the bench and maybe people will start saying, if he can keep a national team player on the bench why is he not in the national team? That's what I'm hoping will happen anyway but both Kim and Kang are in the national team because they are great players. It's going to be tough, but the main thing is we do well as a team and if my goals contribute to that then great. If Kim's goals do that, great and if Kang's goals do that then that's great." said the youngster. Jing is currently without a club but is attracting interest from teams such as Beningrad FC, Corcaigh FC and Oblast Rangers, and a good performance in the Oriental Cup is only going to make those clubs more keen to sign him.

With the opening match to be played in a few short hours, the IFA has come out to announce a few issues that have been left unresolved since the publications recently, to settle any uncanny rumors.

The Head Commissioner Count Jeong Mongjun first announced the team to be sent to the Cup - indicated below. Although Head Coach Cha Beomgeun was not selected to coach the team, the Head Commissioner indicated that this was not a measure of his "incapability, but rather our inclination to offer others the opportunity to lead the great team." That said, Count Jeong later mentioned that the Head Coach was being offered the position for the WC37 Qualifying Tour.

In addition to the National Team Roster, Count Jeong also confirmed rumors that Ariddian Superstar Jang Seol (Mandarin: Chang Xue) would be performing for the Cup, including solo performances of every national anthem. No official contract was mentioned, but the Count was very optimistic that any continuing deals would be resolved by the start of the tournament.

In a final release, the Head Commissioner was also pleased to announce that all participating countries are now officially recognized by the Imperial Foreign Ministry. Count Jeong explained the policy of official recognition as more of a tool permitting the Imperial Ministry to coordination communications with foreign countries, not so much as a tool to influence or hinder any country politically. With the recognition of these participating countries, the Imperial Foreign Ministry has submitted their names for official and administrative use during the Cup:

On behalf of the Ariddian Arctic Islands, the People's Democratic Social Republic of Ariddia is recognized:

People's Democratic Social Republic of Ariddia (亞利茶人民社會共和國 {아리차인민사회공화국})

On Behalf of the Elves Security Forces, Valanora is recognized:

Valanora (渤努喇 {발노라})

The People's Republic of Sorthern Northland is recognized:

People’s Republic of Sorthern Northland (南北人民共和國 {남북인민공화국})

Kiryu-shi is recognized:

Kiryushi (桐生市 {동생시})

With this presentation, the IFA of the Great Han Empire wishes all contestants the best luck in the Cup, and that the best team may win the prize.

IFA Sport Commentary (in no way affects what happened on the field)

Today, we had an outstanding showing by the visiting teams, as they took the field on the bye day for the Imperial Team, and clearly all teams demonstrated great skill and practical knowledge in their matches. The Golden Goal in the first match proved enough to separate the lot between two very competent and indeed potent teams, and a single goal was the only splitting difference in the second match. With such force in play, it will be difficult for the Imperial Team - a mostly inexperienced lot - to compete in the coming matches, but it makes for great practice and for great football.

Last Reminders:

* Scores are not decided by ranks - only RP skill and playing style. Every team has a roughly equal chance to win the cup.
* Since there are no draws, all goals scored in extra time are golden goals.
* Goals won in the PK round do not count toward the goal difference.

Good start for AAIs

The Ariddian Arctic Islands had the honour of the opening match in the inaugural Oriental Cup, facing a Han team from Elves Security Forces in the Emperor Gojong Football Stadium. Before the match, Chang Xue (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Chang_Xue) (장설) sang the anthems of both teams in front of a packed stadium – singing the Ariddian anthem Dream (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Dream) for the Arctic Islanders’ team.

However, the Islanders did not perform the ulek, which is an Ariddian Wymgani custom.

Spectators, of course, did not know what to expect from a country which is a complete newcomer to international football. Only goalkeeper Cassie Lee was a sure value; she recently thanked the Imperial Football Association of the Han Empire for their kind words (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12996405&postcount=16) following her being awarded the title of best football player in the world.

At the age of 38, she is also the second oldest (human) player in the competition, jointly with Kiryu-shi’s Curtis Anderson and behind Sorthern Northland’s Feng Shui.

The Islanders had trained long and hard, and proved their ability to hold on against the Elves, with a few clumsy mistakes nonetheless.

A miscommunication in defence in the 25th minute gave the Marauders an opportunity to take the lead. Four minutes later a counter-attack left the AAIs’ Songkwan Ea alone facing Elven keeper Manuel Lee, but the referee correctly signalled an offside.

Ala Tiyök scored the Islands’ first goal in the 35th minute, and waved at the spectators cheerfully upon giving her side the equaliser. A few minutes later, the Elves came close to regaining the lead on a corner kick taken by Kawi Marl. Kim Jaosti outjumped Zeph Yan Yin to deflect it, but did not clear the ball safely from the danger zone, giving Alex Wahn the opportunity to strike. Cassie Lee, however, proved her stuff yet again by scrambling down in a leap and securing the ball before it could enter her goalcage.

She cleared it over to Tiyök, but by the 43rd minute the Marauders were back, retaking the lead just before half-time.

“What we’ve seen so far is a well-balanced game, and our side have shown they’re definitely not outclassed on the world stage,” AAI-born coach and former Rouge-et-Noir Aush Song commented briefly during the break. “Anything can still happen in this match.”

In the fifty-eighth minute the Elves’ Manuel Lee was shown a yellow card for a clumsy tackle on Atjo Pak, and the latter was granted a penalty kick. The Marauders’ keeper saved it, enabling his team to remain in the lead.

It was Ri Paehun who finally levelled it out in the sixty-sixth minute, slipping the ball into the net, to the sound of cheers from the tiny number of Arctic Islanders and Ariddians in the stadium.

Going into extra time, the Islanders became more cautious, tightening their defence and focusing on retaining possession as much as possible. There were two close scares, first when E’ol Awsh was just able to tackle the ball away from attacker Yan Kips, then when Cassie Lee saved a shot from Roger Zensan. It took longer for the Islanders to break through the Elves’ defences, but their first shot on goal during extra time was the winning one. Hwang Kumchol slammed the ball into the net, and the Ariddian Arctic Islands had won their first match.

Kaer Börgrund, who had been named captain for the match, swapped his shirt with the Elves’ captain (a tradition popularised by the Rouge-et-Noirs), while the two goalkeepers, both named Lee, did likewise. Petite Cassie Lee was swimming in Manuel Lee’s shirt, while the latter, unable of course to fit into Cassie’s shirt, swung it around then slung it over his shoulder.

Asked what she thought of being in the Han Empire, Ala Tiyök, an Indigenous Arctic Islander and the player who had scored the team’s first goal, said:

“I’m impressed. I never thought I’d get to travel this far. And everything here is so different! It’s so much bigger than back home. I’m from Fetuo island, and we only have. . . fewer than two hundred inhabitants, I think. Or about two hundred. Here, there are people everywhere! (laughs) I went to a museum the other day, and their culture and history are fascinating.”

Kang Hanyun, who played part of the match as a substitute, was struck by differences in language and customs.

“The people here are Han, like us, but the Korean they speak isn’t exactly the same as ours. And our culture. . . Well, our culture, our habits have been reshaped through contact with the Indigenous Arctic Islanders and the Wymgani. This hasn’t happened here, of course, so things are different. The buildings, what people eat, what they do for passtimes. . . It’s all very interesting. I’ve been telling people here about Ariddian Arctic Korean (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Korean). People here hadn’t heard of it, so they’re learning something from us, too.” (smiles)

As for Cassie Lee, she told journalists she was delighted at the opportunity to talk Korean for once.

“I never used to have anyone in Ariddia to talk Korean to, except my family, and the owners of one or two shops. . . It’s the same in Errinundera. No-one speaks Korean there, not even my husband. I’m teaching Korean to our daughter, but she’s not going to have anyone else to practice it on. Here I can speak Korean to everyone! It’s great!” (laughs)

What language do the Arctic Islander players speak among themselves?

“Tikieyo,” Lee explains. “It’s the Indigenous language. Except that I only speak a few words of it, and Emelio doesn’t speak it at all, so I talk to Aush in Korean or in French, Emelio talks to him in French, and he translates into Tikieyo for the rest of the team, and vice-versa. . . It’s all a little complicated, but we manage.”

Ariddian government confirms establishing of diplomatic relations with Han Empire

The Ariddian Secretariat for External Affairs has welcomed the announcement of diplomatic recognition from the Han authorities, and has reciprocated.

“With their permission, we will be sending Ambassador Cho Simon In-hwan as our representative to Hangyŏng (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Hangyeong),” a spokeswoman said. “We look forward to significant diplomatic and cultural talks and exchanges between our two countries.”

"Obviously I am happy with the result, getting three points is the main thing but our performance left a lot to be desired, we will have to improve a lot to win this competition. Kiryu-shi will be unhappy not to have got three points from the game today they were very unlucky"

That was the view of the Sorthern Northland squads player-manager Feng Shui today after a fortunate victory in the opening game.

Despite Kiryu-shi's domination it was the Sorthern Northlanders who came away victorious. The games only goal came from Sorthern Northland's only shot on sixty-three minutes. Feng Shui's poor corner was headed clear by Kohei Suzuki, although rather than getting rid of the danger it fell to the feet of Xeng Xung who took a touch to control the ball and with his second shot unleashed a thunderbolt past the statue-esq Jon Crow. The rest of the game went Kiryu-shi's way but they failed to take any of their many chances and will be bitterly disappointed to have lost. Sorthern Northland will be looking for a better performance against the Elves Security Forces.

IFA Sport Commentary (in no way affects what happened on the field, except for Han matches)

The second day of competitive football went by with a great fury of goals, as the Imperial Team steals its opening victory against Kiryu-shi. Despite losing neatly to a well-furnished Sorthern Northland side by a single goal, it seems that well rested Han players were allowed the opportunity to strike against them. Indeed, the Han players had the advantage to watch Kiryu-shi play and perhaps understood the tactical strengths of the Kiryu-shi side. It was an earlier match in the Cup of Harmony that led the two sides to a draw, but in this setting, it was all for the Imperial side, as the crowds cheered on the home team and tournament hosts.

It was a slow start for both sides, but Kiryu-shi held back their offensive prowess, preferring defensive strength. It played well into the Han strategy, as Yi Cheonsu and Jeong Jihun both scored hard-fought goals in the first half, to leave the field 2-0. The second half proved more difficult, as the Han strikers were finding more of the goalkeeper than the net. Nonetheless, Kim Ho, continuing his tour with the Imperial Team performed marvelously, saving all 4 shots on goal that the Kiryu-shi strikers offered in the second half, and it was a late corner kick by An Pilrip that cemented the 3-0 lead, as Hong Myeongbo squarely lobbed the ball into the net. It was an obviously thrilling victory, and left many critiques of the "rag-tag" team in awe. Nonetheless, they will be facing greater challenges against Sorthern Northland, who faced off against the Elves Security Forces team, falling only 4-3. And following Sorthern Northland will be the daunting Elves Security, who despite their fluke against the Ariddian Islanders in extra time in the first match, showed themselves to be very competent against Sorthland Northland. For the final match, the team will set against the Islanders, who received their bye today.

It was another storm today as the Imperial Team narrowly carries away another win. The score doesn't quite reflect that, but there is no doubt that Sorthern Northland could have made a greater impact if Kim Ho had not stood as strongly in the box. Sorthern Northland was quick to make the first and critical strike; and their strike helped dictate the pace for very much the entire first half, if not the whole match. Numerous chances were squandered as veteran midfielders helped contain the defensive aspect. The first true break came late in the 37th minute as Jeong Jihun broke free of his defender and made a square shot on goal - the goalie deflected the shot, but Yi Cheonsu was quick to make the follow-up. The two teams retired at half with an even 1-1 score. While one would have anticipated the steam from the Imperial attack to bear down quickly, it was in fact a desperate Sorthern Northland strike that almost broke the score early in the second half. Stubborn defending helped keep the ball out, and propel the team into play. And it was again Jeong Jihun who cleared the line, breaking out and settled for a neat past the goalkeeper who darted out too soon. Two minutes later, following up, Kim Chigon helped pass the ball up the field, where An Pilrip found a great opportunity to cross, finding Jeong Jihun's foot at the best moment. At the end, it was an astounding 3-1 scoreline that did not best ressemble the competitiveness between the two teams. Nonetheless, the Imperial Team earns yet another valuable win, as the Ariddians took up a storm against Kiryu-shi, striking them out 4-0. It was an impressive display by the Islanders, many of whom who had never played internationally before. Indeed, they are becoming the team to beat, while Kiryu-shi slumps down irredeemably into last position. Doubtless, the head coach will be looking for possible changes to make at least an honorable contest in their final match; the players will likely look well to their day of rest as well, as the Elves Security Forces come back to face the Imperial Team, while the Islanders look to increase their odds against Sorthern Northland.

AAIs take the lead

The Arctic Islanders have put an end to team Kiryu-shi’s hopes in this competition, with a decisive victory at Emperor Gojong Football Stadium, in the Imperial capital Hangyŏng.

Cassie Lee performed flawlessly in the goalcage, but her inexperienced team mates were also at their best, and dominated the match.

The Islanders put the pressure on their opponents from early on, while Kiryu-shi adopted their usual balanced, mostly defensive tactics. Finding a breach in those defences in the thirty-first minute enabled Songkwan Ea (에아 송관) to put his country in the lead, following a well-aimed and well-timed pass from Atjo Pak (박 앋조).

Kiryu-shi began to strike back in earnest, but this time the Islanders’ defence seemed all but impassible, and Lee proved an unsurmountable last hurdle whenever Qian Mei or Kazuko Machihara was able to place a shot on goal. Looking increasingly confident, the Islanders increased their lead in the thirty-ninth minute, through Ala Tiyök (디역 아라).

The tiny Ariddian and Arctic Islander presence in the stadium was cheerfully vocal in its support, joined by a few local spectators. Lee Hye-hyok, an inhabitant of Hangyŏng, explained: “It’s interesting to think there are Koreans living somewhere on small islands locked in the Arctic ice. Thanks to this Cup, we’re learning about foreign people who are different from us and similar at the same time. So when my country’s not playing, I support the Arctic team.”

Local support perhaps played a part in helping the Islanders increase their lead in the second half. A corner kick from Hwang Kumchol (황 굼졸) gave Songkwan Ea the opportunity to divert the ball into Crow’s goalcage, but the Kiryu-shi keeper deflected it. Tackling the ball off defender Kohei Suzuki moments later, Atjo Pak passed to Emelio del Rosario (델러사리오 에메리오), who made it 3-0.

In the sixty-second minute, Ri Paehun was closing in once more on Crow’s goalcage, but illicitly tripped up Kiryu-shi defender Kenji Stewart, earning himself a yellow card and giving his opponent a free kick.

Nonetheless, the Islanders had not finished attacking, eager to build up a strong goal differential in this competition. Overwhelming Kiryu-shi’s defence one last time, Songkwan Ea hit the ball into the net, completing a 4-0 victory.

The Ariddian Arctic Islands are now at the top of the competition, and unexpectedly appear as the most dangerous opponents. The key test, no doubt, will be against the hosts, who also have a perfect record so far.

“They’ll have the home crowd on their side,” Aush Song said. “It’ll be quite a challenge. We’re looking forward to it.”

Before that, the AAIs will face Sorthern Northland, who cannot afford to lose another match.

“They know they absolutely have to beat us,” Song said. “That’ll influence their tactics – and ours.”

Two defeats end SN hopes of victory.

Sorthern Northland's chances of winning The Oriental Cup are now all but finished following two defeats in two days.

SN's first defeat came out the hands of the Elves Security Forces. Feng Shui had expressed the need for a better performance before the game and he got that with Jing Mao bagging a hat trick and the impressive Xeng Xung setting up all three goals. However the attacks heroics could not be repeated by the defence and a poor defensive performance allowed the ESF to score four avoidable goals.

The Sorthern Northlanders then faced hosts Daehanjeiguk. The Sortherner's got off to a good start with Kim Min-Kim breaking the deadlock after just ten minutes. They then dominated the play for most of the match but a lapse in concentration in the 37th minute allowed Daehanjeiguk back into the game when Yi Cheonsu was first onto Jeong Jihun's rebounded effort to level the scores.

Soon after the break Kang Kan-Kang had an effort cleared off the line, as stubborn Daehanjeiguk defending kept the scores level. With tiredness creeping in the SN defence seemed to go completely AWOL in the last few minutes with Daehanjeiguk wrapping up a 3-1 win in the last four minutes of the game.

Fire Squad

Well it's not been the absolutely greatest first half to the Cup, but it has not neccassarily been a poor half either. Despite pitting two past the Ariddian great Cassie Lee, the Marauders fell in extra time. However the next match against Southern Northland turned out to be a seven goal shootout, with the edge coming to the navy and black thanks to the timely finishing of Yan Kips and Zeph Yan Yin. The attacking trio of Kips, Yin, and Defecta have been quite effective, but it is a leaky defence that is threatening to keep the squad from taking home the title. Up next is the honored hosts of the Impieral team, who are currently sharing the top of the table with the Artic Islands of Ariddia. Each team is looking eceptionally strong and the defence will need to find its groove, as well as Lee better protecting the purity of his net if the visitors hope to take some points out of the encounter.

Yin has scored in both games, putting one in against Ariddia and two in the Northalnd affair, and looks to be the best player on the team. Despite better success in the domestic leagues, Kips is clearly not at the level that Zeph is right now. Perhaps the one striker is more motivated to be playing for his country and heritage more than the other, or perhaps Kips is merely the product of the Raynor City tactics, but Yin has definately been the shining star in the two played fixtures. Kips grabbed both of his goals in the Northland match, with both coming off great distrubition from Zensan. Webber is clearly getting good play out of his midfield and striker group, but one has to wonder if he doesn't have the mold for being a big time manager on the world level with how poorly his backline is performing. Then again, this is not the national team, and he was only alotted three weeks of training for the squad before they played their first match.

Whatever is the reason behind the poor defensive performances, if it is not corrected for these last two matches, in particular for the upcoming match, the Marauders appearance in this Cup will be nothing more than just a concolation prize for being somewhat diverse ethnicaly. But it must be said, that if the backline performs admirably against the strong Han attack, that all we be forgiven, and Webber be made a hero. Let that outcome be the one of reality, and let the sleeping dragon roar with its grand awakening and restore his claim of superiority lest he be struck down by his foes whilst in hibernation.

IFA Sport Commentary (in no way affects what happened on the field, except for Han matches)

If there is any word that can adequately describe today's match between the Imperial Team and the Elves Security Forces, it would be "tense"; tense because for 120 minutes, neither team could finish even one goal - tense because for 120 minutes, shots flew but no goals scored - tense because the resulting PK shootout was decided on the very last shot. In the end, the Imperial Team added another victory to the line-up as the Elves Security Forces take an uneasy and perhaps undeserved loss against the Imperial side - indeed it was the brilliant tactics that helped keep them in the game, and what makes the loss more difficult is their inability to capitalize adequately against an Imperial side that was clearly not having one of its best days. But of course, the saving grace was goalkeeper Kim Ho, who recorded an astounding 10 saves against a persistent and ever-threatening ESF offensive. The Imperial did have sparkling moments, but as Mun Hyeonyeop draw an obviously flagrant foul in the 69th minute, it was obvious the ensuing red card would push the favor to the ESF team; yet they failed to make the best of the situation, making aggressive plays that at times baffled the defense. And several close shots were either well-collected or off-target. The penalty shootout round was perhaps the most nerve-racking as the ESF team took the first shot, scoring an easy shot on Kim Ho. Yi Yeongpyo, taking the first shot for the Imperial team, replied in kind. ESF took another shot and succeeded, bringing the PK total to 2-1. But Yi Cheonsu daftly took a gamble, lobbing the ball down the center as the ESF goalkeeper took a wrong dive. Nonetheless, the ESF took another shot and put on the increased pressure for Hong Myeongbo - indeed his shot nearly missed, with a bounce off the crossbar; and fortunately for him, the gods favored it. Undaunted, the ESF took another shot, and made it work, as Kim Ho touched the ball but failed to dislodge it completely, making the total 4-3. An Pilrip found the fourth shot for the Imperial side, bringing the total to 4-4. Now as the shots became more like the sudden death round, it was a straight ball that Kim Ho collected for the fifth shot, a brilliant save that put the pressure on for Jeong Jihun - who capitalized the ESF's error and won the match on his shot - 4-5 for the Imperial Team. Despite the PK shootout, the Imperial team still maintains three wins in the tournament, meaning that the next match against the Islanders will be even more critical - with the tournament championship at stake. The Ariddian Islanders come off a well-deserved 4-2 victory over Sorthern Northland, who leave the tournament with 1 win against Kiryu-shi and three consecutive losses. As for the Elves Security Forces, their next match against Kiryu-shi will be to cement their position in third place after what has been considered an "uncharacteristic" style for the ESF team; one critic commented, "It's obvious that the ESF team has not fully appreciated the depth of this tournament, as they undoubtedly have an outstanding record in the World Cup; yet to appear here and fail twice seems to be uncharacteristic of their style of play." Other critics have commented that the "dual nature of the tournament - to advance Han culture and bring those elements of Han culture in one tournament - has dulled the playing capacity of those teams seeking to participate in this tournament. Whereas the Imperial Team has capitalized on home field advantage, and on excellent home players, much of the other teams have used weaker Han players to satisfy the sadistic nature of the IFA, to advance itself as the premier Han team in the world." The IFA rebutted such comments, stating that "visiting teams have all voluntarily equipped their line-up with ethnic Han and Oriental players, to promote sportsmanship and familiar cultural heritage among many nations. It is not the purpose of the OFC to promote the Imperial superiority over any other Han population."

Nonetheless, all bets are hanging on the Ariddians and the Imperial Team, who will face off in Hangyeong tomorrow at 1700. Indeed, by chance, the two teams face off undefeated, where after this match only one team will be champion over the tournament. And as always, may the best team win.

(ooc: to all who have participated, I would like to thank you all in advance of the Final Matchday for the OFC. You've all made this very successful in my opinion. I also wish to thank you for all of the commitment you've made to this tournament; I'm glad that my score equations works relatively fine, although if any of the scores seem unfair, I would like to state that all scores have been calculated principally upon the playing style for each team and the amount RPing committed to this tournament. Again, I appreciate all of the commitment put into this, and I'm hoping that you will return for a second edition after WC37, hopefully with more teams.)

Last match will also be grand final

After three games and three victories, the Ariddian Arctic Islanders remain one of the two teams in contention for the Cup. By an interesting coincidence in the schedule, the two contenders will meet in their last match – making it, essentially, a classic final.

The Islanders wore away black to Sorthern Northland’s home red. As always, Chang Xue sang the two national anthems –We Love You Sorthern Northland, We Do and Dream– in her clear, beautiful voice, and players shook hands before the game began.

Gung Ho-suk achieved the first shot on goal in the ninth minute for Sorthern Northland, but Cassie Lee stopped it with little difficulty. Another attempt by Gung in the ensuing minutes was deflected by E’ol Awsh, and after that the Arctic Islanders dominated most of the first half.

Atjo Pak scored the opening goal in the sixteenth minute, and the team kept pressing for more, not content to rely on a one goal lead. When goalkeeper Kim Suk-yang blocked a shot from the same Pak in the twenty-seventh minute but was unable to grab the ball, Ala Tiyök had already forged her way through the Sorthern Northlander defences, and made it two-nil with a well-aimed flick of the foot.

The first half ended with Ri Paehun finding the horizontal bar of Kim Suk-yang’s goalcage – a scare for the Sorthern Northland side, but not an extra goal.

Maintaining the pressure, Hwang Kumchol delivered an amazing shot on goal from a long distance to further increase his side’s lead, and there seemed little doubt now that the Islanders would take the match. But that was forgetting their opponents’ determination. The Northlanders struggled to build up fresh opportunities for themselves, exploiting any crack in the Arctic players’ defences, and were finally rewarded when Sŏl Kim-hyuk hit the ball into the back of the Islanders’ net. A second goal from the Sorthern Northlanders –namely Gung Ho-suk– in the seventy-fifth minute awakened spectators’ interests in the outcome – suddenly making it uncertain once again. If the Northlanders could score just one more time in the remaining fifteen minutes, and protect their net, the match would go into extra time.

It was a big if, and any hopes petered out when Kim Kihyŏn firmly shot the ball into Kim Suk-yang’s net, effectively ending the match in the eighty-first minute. The Northlanders battled on, but it was well and truly over. The final score was four goals to two.

For the ‘final’, the Arctic Islanders will now face the hosts, who narrowly dispatched Elves Security Forces on penalty kicks.

“The Han Empire have won all their games, and they have the home crowd supporting them,” Arctic Islander coach Aush Song noted. “But we know we have everyone back home in the Islands, and in Ariddia too, supporting us. And that support is a big help.”

Indeed, the Arctic team’s performance has generated significant interest in Ariddia itself, where people are tuning in to watch every match –and every victory– played by the team from their far-flung overseas territory.

And, a long way from Ariddia’s warm, semi-tropical climate, the Cup has created a huge buzz in the Ariddian Arctic Islands. The capital city, Ata’eatu, is little more than a large village near the coast of a frozen sea, swept by icy winds blowing in from the Arctic. On dark evenings, figures clad in thick protective clothing can be seen hurrying through the snow-clogged streets towards the warm glow and cheerful sounds of the pub, where locals of all ethnic backgrounds are crowding in to watch the match. Warming their hands on mugs of hot wine, islanders gaze at the smallish television screen and talk excitedly amongst themselves, cheering loudly at every goal. A significant number of the team’s players are from Ata’eatu, of course, and here they are not mere names and faces associated with an unapprochable football team; they are friends, family, or at least acquaintances.

“That’s my grandson,” an old man tells a reporter proudly, his wrinkled face beaming, pointing at the screen as Ri Paehun almost scores a goal at the end of the first half. “I’m sure he’ll be bringing back lots of stories from. . . over there.”

Further south, some distance from the small capital, communities are even tinier. Ŭmyeng (음옝), a village of about thirty people in the mostly Korean Rijo Atoll, has no television; several families gather together round a radio to listen to the match through the screaches and splutters of static interference. This is where Kim Kihyŏn comes from, and his parents both glow with pride every time his name is mentioned. His elder sister and his girlfriend smile more discreetly, whispering to each other tales of the young man’s younger years. When Kim scores his first goal of the competition, there are shouts, hugs, and his father pours fresh drinks for everyone.

“They have not put him among the starting eleven,” he says of his son, “but today he played very well. We will be talking about this for a long time, I think.”

Come what may in the final, Arctic Islanders feel their team has left its mark on international football.

For the match against the Han Empire, an entire country of about 1,600 people will be watching –or listening– as one, far up there on tiny islands amidst the frozen Arctic seas.

Sorthern Northland defeat sets up fantastic final

A third defeat means Sorthern Northland will probably finish in a disappointing 4th place whilst opponents Ariddian Arctic Islands play hosts Daehanjeiguk on the final day of the tournament in a match that will determine the winner.

It was SN though who started the brightest today with midfielder Gung Ho-Suk firing weakly into the hands of the Islanders keeper. Another shot from Gung just minutes later seemed to be turned away by the hand of E’ol Awsh but the referee gave no penalty despite the loud appeals from the Sortherners.

Following this much of the half was dominated by Ariddian Arctic Islands, with the scoring being opened in the 16th minute by Atjo Pak. The Islanders then kept pressing for more and when Kim Suk-Yang fumbled at Atjo Pak's shot after 27 minutes, Ala Tiyök was first on hand to stab home for a second goal. Ri Paehun then ended the half by rattling the Sortherner's crossbar.

In the second half the Islander's kept up their pressure and it wasn't long before a spectacular long range effort from Hwang Kumchol found it's way into the back of the net. With a three goal lead the Islander's seemed to relax a bit and a determined Sorthern Northland tried getting back into the game. Seol Kim-Hyuk grabbed one for the Sortherner's just before the hour mark with a clever chip over the Islander's keeper. The excellent Gung Ho-Suk then headed home Feng Shui's cross in the seventy-fifth minute and an amazing comeback looked on the cards for SN. However if anything the two goals woke the Islander's up and they upped they play enough for Kim Kihyŏn to get his first goal and seal the victory for the Islanders.

On the whole Sorthern Northland's performance in the tournament has been an enjoyable if disappointing one and the Sortherner's are sure to return for the second tournament hopefully with a better performance. The SNFA would also like to thank their counterparts in Daehanjeiguk for organising the tournament and wish both Daehanjeiguk and the Ariddian Arctic Islands the best of luck in the "final".

An unannounced change in the schedule has just been announced by the IFA - instead of playing the AAI-HAN match at 1700, it has been decided that a more appropriate finish would permit the KYS-ESF match to go first. For this reason, the current schedule reads as follows:

Match 9 @ 1700, Emperor Gojong Football Stadium, Hangyeong
Kiryu-shi --- Elves Security Forces
Match 10 @ 1900, Emperor Gojong Football Stadium, Hangyeong
Ariddian Arctic Islands --- Daehanjeiguk

IFA officials have apologized for any inconvenience caused for visiting fans and tickets purchased in advance, and have decided to offer a refund to those this last-minute change caused an grave inconvenience.

Without further ado, Match 9:

Kiryu-shi 0-4 Elves Security Forces

IFA Sport Commentary (in no way affects what happened on the field, except for Han matches)

Indeed, whatever has happened between their last match against the Imperail Team, the Elves took on an already battered Kiryu-shi opponent, who fell 0-4. It was a "characteristic" match for the ESF team, who dominated nearly the entire match. Doubtless, such a team would have easily trounced the Imperial side, but unfortunately, as is often the case in world tournaments - part of the talent of winning is winning when it counts. Nonetheless, despite their two losses, the ESF team comes out of the tournament in 3rd place, with Sorthern Northland taking 4th place.

While uncustomary in many other tournaments, the IFA of the Han Empire has decided to offer a prize reward to each and every contestant - based on their final rank: Kiryu-shi, settled in last place, will receive 50,000,000元 (94.025 million USD); Sorthern Northland, in 4th place, will receive 100,000,000元 (188.050 million USD); the Elves Security Forces, in 3rd place, will receive 200,000,000元 (376.100 million USD). All rewards have been issued to the football organizations of those representative countries (in the case of ESF, Valanora is the recognized government for which the Elves Security Forces play).

With the 3rd/4th/5th place awards ceremony over, we now await the final match.

(ooc: the final has already been scored; however, I will need some time to in fact prepare the OFC Plaque to be presented, so as it should be, the final match will be presented at 0000GMT)

Final Match @ 1900, Emperor Gojong Football Stadium, Hangyeong
Ariddian Arctic Islands 1-1 Daehanjeiguk (1-1 AET | 3-2 PK)

It was another tough round, but the Ariddian Islanders have battled through to claim the ultimate prize (that would make it three, now? WC? Francos? and OFC?). It was a mean contest between the two sides, with the Islanders stealing away an early goal in the 35th minute. The Imperial Side remained vigilant and fought back, though the score remained 1-0 at halftime. Coming into the second half, the Imperial team strode to make more opportunities, but mostly failed. It was in fact only a lucky break that gave the Imperial team a slender equalizer in the 78th minute, off a Jeong Jihun volley from a well-placed corner kick. However, neither side was able to gain the advantage in goals throughout the remainder of regulation and into extra time; and it led inevitably to the fierce and contested PK shoot-out.

The Islanders failed to capitalize 3 of their first five shots, while Yi Cheonsu and Son Yeijin managed to score, where Jeong Jihun, An Pilrip, and Hong Myeongbo failed. It was the sixth shot that put increased pressure on the last shot by Jeong Ji - the ball fell into the hands of the formidable Cassie Lee, winning the match and thus the tournament on that single save.

It was a ceremonious atmosphere as Count Jeong Mongjun came out and presented the Ariddian Arctic Islanders the golden plaque and the golden trophy. The plaque itself was a permanent reward to the Ariddian Islanders, but the trophy is to remain in the Ariddian Arctic Islands until the next cup. For the team with many new players and some old, it was a welcome victory for the semi-autonomous zone; with the victory, Count Jeong has proposed establishing extensive football facilities in the Islands, to continue to promote cultural and physical excellence of Han football. He also commiserated with the Imperial Team, that had fought so hard to make it to the final match and suddenly fall in penalty kicks - "It was a tragic loss, but it so eloquently displayed the strengths and weaknesses of all sides. It was the perfect match to end this tournament."

With the Ariddians crowned as champions, there has been domestic speculation as to the future of Cassie Lee, who has apparently dropped out of the World Cup 37 race for Ariddia. There has been some talk that the Ariddian Han football star could be persuaded to come to the Empire and help promote international issues as well as serve as the cultural ambassador of Ariddia to the Empire for the Han ethnicity, but no official word has come through yet.

Arctic Islanders take first Oriental trophy

Against all expectations, the Ariddian Arctic Islands’ team, coached by AAI-born former Rouge-et-Noir Aush Song, have gone all the way and won the inaugural edition of the Oriental Cup.

There was some concern when, on the morning of the match day, Cassie Lee anounced she had just found out she was over two and a half months pregnant. The team’s goalkeeper confirmed that she would nonetheless be playing the match.

“I’m ecstatic right now, and part of me can’t wait to get home and share this joy with my husband, and our daughter. I’ve already told him, of course, and he’s really happy. This will be our second child. But. . . Well, nothing could make me miss out on the final of this Cup! I feel priviledged to be here, and I’ll be right there with the rest of the team for the big match.”

Atjo Pak scored the opening goal in the thirty-fifth minute, but the Islanders were unable to build on their initial lead, and Jŏng Jihun equalised in the second half. Extra time did not produce a winner, leading to the Cup being decided on those ever nail-biting penalty kicks.

Goal-scorer Pak went first for the Arctic Islands. . . and scored. The Han Empire’s goalscorer Jŏng Jihun also went first, and when he missed the entire population of the Ariddian Arctic Islands no doubt sat up on the edge of their seats and held their breath. Ala Tiyök went second. . . and missed. Then the Han Empire’s An Pilrip missed too, leaving the Islands with the most fragile of leads.

Going third, Songkwan Ea failed to score, and supporters continued to hold their breath tensely, until the Empire’s Yi Chŏnsu scored at last, and the Islanders’ lead vanished. It was back to square one.

Going fourth, Kim Daeho scored while Hong Myŏngbo missed, then Hwang Kumchol missed while Son Yeijin scored. Still all square after five.

The tension could not have been higher. Both teams remained in the competition only because the other had equalled their number of mistakes. That balance could not last indefinitely, and indeed it did not. Ri Paehun was called upon to take his side’s sixth penalty shot, and his ball sailed into the net. The Han Empire now had to score or they would be eliminated.

Jŏng Ji faced Cassie Lee, who looked perfectly focused. This match was the last of her career. These were the final seconds of her appearances on the international football stage, and she was obviously determined to go out on a memorable victory.

Jŏng’s ball hurtled towards her. Lee assessed its trajectory within a fraction of a moment then leapt, and was in its path. Her arms closed round the ball, securing it, and the competition was over. Shouts and applause could be heard from the minuscule Ariddian and Arctic Islander presence in the stadium.

Lee straightened up, smiled, and went over to give Jŏng Ji a friendly handshake, and whisper a few words to him with a kind smile. Later, she gave him her shirt as a souvenir.

People tonight will no doubt be staying up late in the tiny capital town of Ata’eatu, and preparing to welcome home their unexpected heroes.

Team captain Kaer Börgrund and coach Aush Song were smiling proudly as they received the trophy and plaque commemorating their victory. Both men thanked Count Jŏng Mongjun for his offer to establish football facilities in the Islands, and said they would convey it to the territory’s semi-autonomous government.

“It’s a very generous offer,” Song said to the press soon thereafter. “And it would make a big difference back home. It would also help our country and the Han Empire develop closer relations.”

Cassie Lee was also asked about her future, in response to speculations voiced in the Imperial media.

“Yes, I’ve received offers to work here in the Han Empire,” she confirmed. “All I can say is, I’m thinking about it. I’d have to see exactly what my job would be. And most importantly I’d have to talk to my husband. I’ve made my home in Errinundera, but live and work for a few years here. . . why not? The Han Empire is a beautiful country, with a rich history and culture, and very friendly people. I’ve enjoyed every minute of my time here, and. . . spending more time here would be lovely. In Errinundera I work as a firefighter, but that’s not really something I want to be doing while I’m pregnant, so this does open up possibilities. I’ll let you know as soon as I can give you a more definite answer.”

The entire team expressed their gratitude and congratulations to the people, authorities and football association of the Empire for a perfect football competition.

“We’ll all be going back home now, and I don’t suppose we’ll be competing again internationally,” Kim Daeho said. “But the Imperial team, I’m sure, have a long and glorious career ahead of them, and I wish them all the best.”

The IFA has convened recently consider opening the OFC second edition and is looking forward to hearing some feedback from last year (or however long ago your calendar is telling you)'s competition. Positive ad negative feedback will be very much appreciated; also newer countries fitting the criteria for participation are encouraged to offer comments as well.

The SNFA is delighted to hear that the IFA are looking into a second OFC. Should a second competition take place the SNFA will defiantly be entering a team for Sorthern Northland again. Although the SNFA hopes more teams shall take part this time, it supports the use of the league concept again if a similar number of teams take part.

The IFA feels encouraged to offer a second round, but we will need some more positive feedback to consider opening a second round. We feel convinced that some of the parties may be too busy to enter a second round - which would follow World Cup 38.

The IFA is pleased to see two of the inaugural teams have expressed their interest. However, we will continue to wait to see if more Oriental-affiliated teams will demonstrate their interest.
