World Heritage Sites & Treasures List

Ariddian government suggests "World Heritage Sites & Treasures List"

After the United Nations' disastrous attempt to create a World Heritage List (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Heritage_List), the Ariddian Secretariat for Culture has announced a new global initiative, submitted to the nations of the world.

Secretary for Culture Serge Rivage told reporters: "The aim of the original World Heritage List was admirable, but its method, as you all know, was deeply flawed. The new World Heritage Sites & Treasures List will be something very different. It will be entirely voluntary. Nations will submit sites -exclusively sites located on territory under their sovereign control- to a register in Rêvane. The ensuing list will be a record of sites of significant value to the peoples of all countries."

Comrade Rivage explained that sites listed could be of two sorts: sites of cultural and/or historical value, and unusual and/or spectacular natural sites. Submitting a site to a list indicates the government's commitment to preserve and protect that site. The authorities in Rêvane will accept all submissions, except those located on disputed territory, and those which are obviously absurd.

Another addition is the mention of "treasures". These are not sites, but anything else that may be considered of outstanding cultural or historical value to a nation or to the peoples of the world (multiverse) as a whole.

"A World Heritage treasure," Comrade Rivage explained, "may be a very ancient object, such as a relic, or traces of the first inhabitants of an area. Or it may be an invaluable artwork, whether it be ancient or not. So it could be an antique crown, or a gravesite, or a stone with the earliest traces of writing in a particular language. Or stained glass, or a tiny unique sculpture. Or it could be something a lot more intangible: a unique and ancient song that's been preserved over the centuries, or a culturally important ceremony. The list will record anything that is of significant historical or cultural value."

The Ariddian government immediately revealed a list of Ariddian sites and "treasures" that will constitute the list's first entries (listed here in no particular order):

Ariddia's national parks and nature reserves (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/National_parks_in_Ariddia) (which together cover over 72% of the country's territory)

Bettia
02-08-2007, 10:32
The Bettian Ministry for Sport and Culture would like to add the following to the list of World Heritage Sites:

The Treaty of Lorshill (the historic document dated 1227 CE / 676 AH signed by the leaders of Gabalfa, Tamrida and Lohashire which saw the birth of Bettia, currently preserved within the Grand Shura Debating Chambers in Gabalfa)
The Banastra Rainforest (a large and rainforest which covers most of the Banastra province and part of Morgrugyn, already preserved as much as possible by the Bettian government - for example, all main roads and railway lines are now run underground)
Al Masjid-i-Nur, Gabalfa (Gabalfa's oldest and largest mosque)
Al Masjid Thamitra, Tamrida (Bettia's oldest mosque, dating back over a thousand years)
Bren-Brooks Wildlife Reserve, Gwlad Teg province (a wildlife reserve straddling the borders of Bettia and Nedalia signifying the bond between the two nations and named after the two nations' presidents at the time)
The Mynydd Fawr cave paintings, Gwlad Teg province (estimated to be around 9000 years old, these are the earlist signs of human habitation in Bettia)
The Archregimancy
02-08-2007, 11:24
This is a joint Dreamed Realm entry for both the Archregimancy and the Holy Empire [of Alasdair I Frosticus].

While it is not the usual practice of the Dreamed Realm nations to pay much attention to the affairs of Ordinary Reality, ISPI (on the Command of the Basileus) and the Holy Synod (on the command of the Patriarch) wish to commend Ariddia for this admirable endeavour. While the age of Dreamed Realm monuments cannot be calculated in Ordinary Reality conceptions of time, both Realm nations feature monuments of abiding cultural significance that deserve a place on this list.

The Archregimancy would like to nominate:

The Grand Lavra - the capital of the Archregimancy (no NSwiki link), and one of the two primary spiritual centres of the Orthodox Church of the Holy Empire. Quite apart from its spiritual significance,t his ancient monastery features some of the most important examples of Orthodox Christian architecture, including a couple of hundred exquisitely decorated Orthodox chapels. The Kyriakon [main church] of the Grand Lavra is probably the most spectacular Orthodox church in the entire Dreamed Realm, overshadowing even the private chapel of the Archregimand. The Great Lavran library contains some 2,046 rare manuscripts, 165 codices, and 30,000 printed books, many of which date to the very earliest history of Christianity. Some, such as a rumoured original copy of Eusebius' History of the Church, are possibly the oldest surviving extant versions of the works in question. The Grand Lavra also features an unrivalled collection of Holy Icons, including the famous Holy Icon of the Mother of God Bringer of Victory Acheiropoietos (or 'made without hands').

The Holy Empire would like to nominate:

The Imperial Precinct of Alasdairopolis - The most famous description of Alasdairopolis remains "We went on to a city of indescribable beauty. Its walls were built of twelve courses, each of a different precious stone, and its gates were of gold and silver. Within the gates we found a golden pavement, golden houses, golden seats. The city was filled with a strange light and a sweet smell. At the edge of the town we came to a wonderful palace, and we entered a hall as broad as a stone's throw. From one end of it to the other stretched a table of porphyry round which many guests were reclining. A spiral staircase, situated at one end of the hall, led to an internal balcony. Two eunuchs, resplendent as lightning, appeared at this balcony, and indicated that we too were to join the guests at the table....". The NSwiki description of Imperial architecture (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Alasdair_I_Frosticus#Architecture)further notes of the three main buildings in the Imperial Precinct that "The most spectacular buildings in the Holy Empire are said to be the Great Palace, the Imperial Basilica of the Holy Wisdom, and the 100,000 capacity Imperial Hippodrome, all of which are gold-domed (the palace also features platinum domes) and bejewelled." That the Imperial Precinct stands out even within the rest of the gilded opulence of Alasdairopolis surely qualifies it for World Heritage Status.

OOC - In RL, all of Mount Athos, the initial RL model for the Archregimancy - including the RL Grand Lavra - is a genuine UNESCO World Heritage Site. (http://whc.unesco.org/en/list/454) The Imperial precinct of the Holy Empire is loosely modelled on the pre-1204 palace quarter of Constantinople.

A more full description of the parts of this historic building can be found in the first half of this thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=534459), as well as the decision process which led to it being nominated.

St Richard's National Forestry Reserve
The largest remaining natural habitat consisting mostly of Shieldian oaks. (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Shieldian_Oak) Located in northern Vesshampton, the reserve is currently protected by the Republic and a very popular destination for camping and hunting trips.
Kelssek
03-08-2007, 15:06
The Ministry of Culture and Tourism nominates the following sites for inclusion:

- Mount Pearson National Park: A breathtaking reserve dominated by the imposing beauty of the Etnierian Mountains and Mount Pearson, at 5959m the highest point in Kelssek. The alpine boreal forest is a key habitat for wolves, caribou and bears.

- Algonquin Provincial Park: When the Noua Cymru provincial government gazetted this area in 1893 it became the first such reserve in Kelssek. Its proximity to Kirkenes makes it one of the most-visited parks in Kelssek and its natural beauty inspired some of our most famous artists to spark a veritable revolution in Impressionistic landscape painting in the 1920s.

- The citadel of Saint-Remy (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Saint-Remy)

- The Old City district of Neorvins (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Neorvins)

- Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump: This cliff was where Aboriginial tribes drove herds of buffalo up a hill and off the cliff during hunting seasons over a thousand years ago. The carcasses would be carved up for food and clothing, among countless other uses.

Cafundeu
05-08-2007, 15:10
Cafundéu would like to nominate:

Carandirú City's Big Prison - Recently built, the prison has an unique architecture, and looks like a chalice of wine. It is enormous, and has its own public transport system, football stadium, hospital and other things that normally would be located outside the prison.

The Old section of São José - São José is the oldest city in the country. Although many parts of the city became modern, the centre of the city still preserves its old buildings. Many of them are now museums, and hold an important part of Cafundéu's history.

Albieri Palace - located in the capital city of Cafundó do Juta, this was the home of the first emperor of Cafundéu. Now, it's only a place for tourists, who visit it to see how Albieri Van Tocco lived while he was the emperor of Cafundéu.

The Obelisk of Jaçanã - dedicated to the heroes that defended the Empire during the Jaçanã Rebellion, it's a big obelisk located in a desert city. In the structure of the obelisk, you can see sculped faces and war weapons in the stone.

The Underwater Aquarium of Submiria - built in the flooded sector of the city, it's an underwater building used as a museum. Although its name would suggest that it shows aquatic wildlife, the aquarium doesn't show only it. Some buildings, which were built when the city wasn't flooded, are now underwater, and only in the aquarium you have an opportunity to see them.

The Prophet Robe - found inside the mysterious tunnels of Central City and now located in its history museum, not much is known about this robe. It was probably used by a prophet who lived in Cafundéu five hundred years ago, and started the occupation of Central City, at that time just a desert place in the mountains (only the coastal part of the country was occupied). Inside the robe there is a note, where the prophet predicted the exact date that his robe was found.

Natural Ice Sculptures in Dunboor - located in the southwestern part of the Dunboor State (not the city), they are big glaciers sculpted by the wind and the other natural phenomena. They have the most different forms and are considered the most beautiful natural formation of Cafundéu.

And, we can even not like them, but we need to nominate something from Estresse Intenso:

The Landau Institute - located in a island in the south of Estresse Intenso, it's very big and holds more than two hundred million people, including patients and doctors. It has its own farms, many cities, nearly considered an independant country. It also has low crime levels, and high life quality. Its main city is Insanis, but all the cities of the island have some importance.

Neblina Bunker - used by ancient religious cults, it is composed by many subterranean tunnels and chambers. Inside them, there are many religious phrases written on the rock and many religious sculptures.

Liberty Avenue - a major avenue in the city of Neblina, it has green roads and blue sidewalks. It is the place where the biggest commemorations of the country happen. It also ends in a big crater, but there is enough protection to prevent the cars from falling in the crater.

There are a few things that the Great Land of Ethan Smith would like to add to the list.

The song "Butterfly Lovers" - Although it is not the official anthem, it is the most popular folk song in Ethan Smith and has sentimental significance to Ethan Smithians.

Lahoyia Beach - The location of the Lahoyia Uprising, getting rid of the barbarians that invaded Ethan Smith.

Blue Mountain - The highest mountain in Ethan Smith. It is a nature reserve with endangered species in Ethan Smith.

OOC: "Butterfly Lovers" and the Blue Mountain are approved unconditionally. Before adding a battle site (or similar) to the List, however, the Ariddian authorities need additional information. Clearly the site has historical value. Is its significance uncontroversial, or would adding it to the List be enshrining a partisan view on the nation's history? Also, who were the invaders?

The Ariddian government is fully prepared to add Lahoyia Beach to the list, but must ask these question out of caution when dealing with a historical conflict site.
Elves Security Forces

The Elven Culture Society would like to nominate;

Mount Sumarja - Located outside of Char Sara, this dormant volcano is the largest of the peaks in the ESF at 12,289 feet above sea level. First escalated by Dian Zairus Raynor in the year 11,208 A.E. named the mountain after a drow warrior who had served under his father's army for many centuries. This mountain is also the location of the High Preistess Temple, and is the gateway to both the 7 Elvish Hells and to the Gray Havens.

The White Fortress - This Gladerial monument was site of multiple battles for the elves, two of which just saved the country from being anilhated from combined orc and troll invasions, as well as a crusade of humans in the early part of their history together around 11,000 A.E. Has since been remade into football stadium, but still stands a bastion of pride and honor amongst the elves.

The White Tree - This odd colored tree with its unique fruit still stands in the middle of Gladerial. It has been closed off torrents of nature, being inclosed in a museum built around it. This very odd tree is the most visited site in the nation, with it also being a must visit for all true believers in Elunism.

For the White Forstress and General Lee's Sabre, see my remarks and questions here (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=13017001&postcount=26). For example, what exactly is/was the White Forstress, aside from a battle site? As for the Sabre, who exactly was it used against, and in what historic context? The PDSRA does not want the List to reflect a partisan side in the interpretation of any historic conflict, if the interpretation or views around that conflict remain contentious.

Kurona

One of Kurona's finest and most natural beauty is the
Onsen (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Onsen) Area is rich in the natural beauty of tall pinewood forests, lakes, steams, and the northern coast line of Kurona. The centeral river known as Sonomi is the biggest and longest in Kurona. It feeds back into the Xanadou Sea. This of course makes plenty of opportunity to for hostile take over and damning, logging among other things. This is a very popular attraction for Kuronans that come for the natural hotsprings as well as other places. It also is a small town with native Kuronans dwelling.
Snefaldia

The Tuhran Bel has had to pick and choose which historical sites to include, because we have so many of them on our own rolls, but luckily they've managed to condense it down to a few very important sites.

1. The Grand Library Complex of Serasarda, the singled largest and longest-operating educational center and library in Snefaldia, and the seat of Aatem Nal.

2. Lake of the Moon (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a188/kuroutesshin/CraterLake_aerial.jpg), Sring Issa. The extinct volcano now houses one of the oldest Endiri shrines in the nation, having been continuously in use for almost 2000 years.

3. The Pearl Book of Ungir-Bel (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a188/kuroutesshin/pearl-book.jpg). Believed to have belonged to one of the founding fathers of Aatem Nal, one of the oldest known copies of the Amershaman Medrahov.

4.Teu'y Wtlo (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a188/kuroutesshin/nmr_15852_03.jpg), "White Queen Hill." Early Dayan city site, one of the oldest instances of mound-building in the Dayan floodplain still existing.

5. Terangal, Allasha. The largest of the Taaru Civlization stone city complexes, Terangal is can only be dated at four thousand years old, although carbon dating suggests it is much older. Like the other Taaru cities, Terangal is still in an excellent state of preservation- as if the inhabitants just left yesterday.

The Bel may make some more additions to the list later. We hope the Ariddians will honor our requests to mark these sites and treasures.
Altanar
24-10-2007, 19:38
Altanar would like to nominate the following sites for the World Heritage Sites & Treasures List:

The Aerie (http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r56/smurfie_bucket/aerie3.jpg) - the historic home of Altanar's ruling Aranathas family, the Aerie was first built in 1587, with the founding of the Kingdom of Ael Khalas, one of the petty kingdoms which would eventually form Altanar. The building has been extensively expanded and modified since it was originally built, and has continuously been home to the Aranathas line since its inception.

The Monastery of the Mountain (http://i141.photobucket.com/albums/r56/smurfie_bucket/monastery.jpg) - a building perched on top of Mount Kilaris in central Altanar, this historic structure has been home to the Solar Pantheonic Church of Altanar since the year 1275. It is widely believed to be one of the oldest, if not the oldest, continuously used structures in Altanar.

As we determine additional sites we feel are worthy of inclusion on this list, we may make further requests later. We hope that these historic structures merit inclusion.

One site we would very much like to see included. Others may be nominated later.

The Indomitable Fortress of Avilla the Hun (http://i10.photobucket.com/albums/a118/teddygrahams113/avilla.jpg): "One of the most magnificent sites in OMGTKK, this majestic ice palace of mysterious origin lies just outside Paradise City, and has housed embassies, diplomats and foreign dignitaries since the Federal Republic’s 2005 arrival in Antarctica. Legend says that the psychotic penguin lord Avilla constructed the palace over 1,000 years ago in order to defend the natives against the human aggressors, but little evidence exists to verify the myth." The Fortress of Avilla the Hun is approved. (OOC: ...and will be added as soon as the NSwiki site is working again, bloody thing.)
Snefaldia
31-10-2007, 04:18
Snefaldia would like to make some more additions to the list:

1. The Shrine of Nál Dá Têisnáyán (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a188/kuroutesshin/crypt.jpg), the founder of the Kingdom of Têisnáyá, as well as the founder of the city of Mavátêisnáya (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Mahavisjaya). His rule coincided with one of the greatest periods of cultural development in the history of Neer Dal.

2. The Wat Latedal (http://i11.photobucket.com/albums/a188/kuroutesshin/yerebatan3.jpg), or the "Hundred Pillars Hall" in Sargedain. The hall was built in the Segovan period to serve as a meeting place; but when flooding forced the city to be rebuilt 30 metres above the old site, the hall was flooded to be used as a cistern and forgotten. It was rediscovered in 1932, and efforts have been made to preserve the example of Segovan-style architecture hidden deep below the city.
