World Cup 37 Introduction:

For more information on the World Cup, its History, how it works, who runs it, and the competitions related to it, check out the World Cup Wiki Site (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Cup).

The NSWC is a tournament for any NS nation who signs up. This World Cup is about to start its 37th competition, and your nation can take part! Every team is given a rank based on their performances in previous Cups, and the starting rank is roughly 200 (the Current 'best team in the world' is Ariddia, with a rank of 1) See: KPB Rankings (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/KPB_ranking_system)

Scores are generated using either a Java program or through various or MS Excel sheet 'scorinators' which use random numbers, weighted by ranking and RP bonus to produce the scores.

It is encouraged for Nations to RP - roleplay - their matches, team rosters, players and such. Good RPs will help raise your chance of winning (especially in the Baptism of Fire). Please note: A lot of RPs does not guarantee goals or wins, but your chances are improved of this happening. i.e. Two debutant, non-ranked, nations play each other. One has RP'd a few times, the other has not. The nation who has participated should have the better probability of victory, but still has a chance of a Win, Loss or Draw.

RPs can be Team Roster announcements, fan comments, press conferences, media stories, anything about the game, as long as you've kept to the score as posted or TGd to you by the host/scorer.

For any other questions you may have, please see the World Cup FAQs article on NSwiki. (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/World_Cup_FAQs) - Courtesy of Starblaydia

The longest-running sports-competition in NationStates reaches its milestone Thirty-seventh tournament: the Football (Soccer) World Cup. Please do specify if you have not participated before.

If your nation is new to the World Cup, or if you have no KPB points, you may be able to take part in the preliminary Baptism of Fire Cup (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Baptism_of_Fire) competition.
If this is your first Cup, please indicate whether you wish to be registered for the Baptism of Fire or not.

Puppets have to post with their nation and identify their master. One Puppet per Master nation, and you may only enter a puppet once you have already competed in a World Cup'

Vanek Drury Brieres, thanks for the offer for hosting but at this time it won't be entertained for now... perhaps a bit later...

As for the BoF, it's generally standard practice for all new nations to enter it... Every nation is on the same level and it's only random numbers and an RP Bonus (dependent on scorinator and hosts)

It's upto you but people who have competed in the BoF get a ranking bonus over those that haven't.
Vanek Drury Brieres
20-08-2007, 14:28
Um, OK then. But what I don't get is how do you determine who wins?
Bazalonia
20-08-2007, 15:08
We use "Scorinators"

Scorinators use a combination of Random numbers, KPB Ranks (which are basically a points-based system to determine how good a team is and is based on performance in previous tournaments) and a bonus applied for your RP's.

Here are some links for you...

Considering it's been only one day since you signed up, I would wait a bit longer before resigning myself to a thousand year wait, if I were you.

The World Cup will start after the following things have been finished:

The World Cup 36 Final, which will likely be completed within the next 24 hours.

I don't know if our hosts have been officially finalized, although it seems that the one bid will get it by default. I haven't been paying attention to see if they'd decided yet.

You may or may not recieve a telegram from the Baptism of Fire host, I would expect that tourney to kick off by the end of this coming week at the latest.

I will definitely send out telegrams. I am going to try to get a thread up while I'm on vacation, but the BoF will not start until the 1st of September, at least. The draw should be posted around then.

Here's an interesting problem: we have two zeroed nations that want in. But I guess Baz decided to volunteer to be wait listed. If we can get 2 more BoF people in, I can make a puppet or something like the non-RPing n00b.

Err, the World Cup 36 and BoF is finished already. I don't think you actually entered a team in it anyway.

How do I do this kind of RP?

Check through the FAQon NSWiki, http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showpost.php?p=12987789&postcount=1

The links there...

Basically the hosts post the scores in a thread and then we react, examples of RP's could be like media, TV, Radio, newspapers

Personal reactions from people involved, or some sort of story that's somehow related to the World Cup... Basically as long as you can somehow relate it to the World Cup you can do it. However with your opponents there is what's called RP Permsissions box, if you refer to the match then please abide by that box if you RP first.

The only rule is that you can't make up the final score...

Read those links and if you still have questions I can help

The BoF will start soon last for a week and a bit, and then soon after thatthe WC will start.

As for the closing of entrants.. That's upto the hosts...

(one of the co-hosts, Novapsolu, here)

Quick announcement:

Puppets (that is, users who wish to sign a second nation up for the NSWC when they are already in it) must sign up by Thursday, August 30 @ 1:00 UTC (9:00 PM Wednesday Eastern Daylight Time (U.S.) ), after which they will not be accepted. Main nations will be permitted to enter for a yet undetermined time period, likely mid-way through the Baptism of Fire competition.

You can RP the players... but remember the score has already been determined and is posted on average every RL day. So basically as long as it is related to the WC and you can phyiscally do it (without breaking the faux pas I've already mentioned) then you can do it.

A word of caution. I can see that you're very enthusiastic about getting involved in this, and that's great, but be prepared for your team to not do very well for their first few cups. The playing field isn't exactly even, since (correct me if I'm wrong) you haven't competed in the NSWC before and are foregoing the Baptism of Fire, you'll be starting completely unranked. Unless you count WC1, when everyone was unranked, no unranked team has ever made it farther than the quarterfinals, and that hasn't happened since, I beleive World Cup 5.

I'm not trying to be discouraging, I just don't want you to go into this expecting to win immediately, and get totally burnt out when you don't. Keep up this level of enthusiasm and participation and you should be very competitive very soon.

haha, i understand, but i just want my new squad to Qualify, there's a big boost of tourism following the news of WC37 and it's my job, as manager, to get us a far as possible. But i'm not expecting to win the World Cup, especially when two of our best players are out for 3 weeks.

I'll repeat Squorn's gentle warning: enthusiastic newcomers are always warmly welcome, but it's virtually unknown (not impossible, just extremely unlikely) for unranked new teams to even qualify. It took four cups for the Archregimancy - which first entered entirely unranked in WC24 - to even qualify.

That said, participate with the level of enthusiasm you're showing so far, and it shouldn't take you too long to become a fixture. And if you don't qualify, there's always the Cup of Harmony - a tournament designed to give a little bit of a boost to active roleplaying nations that don't qualify for the the tournament proper.

EDIT: Just to be pedantic... Everyone was unranked in WC2 as well. WC3 was the first tournament to include any type of ranking system.

Don't expect to qualify first WC, starting unranked is means the KPB bonus slams you into the bottom half of the tables. :p

Fifty years had passed. The ashes of the empire had long since finished smouldering, turning slowly, over decades, into fields of grass, mud and, to the excitement of a few surviving hippy types, poppies. To these hippy types, the fifty years had felt more like fourteen months, but they wouldn't tell anyone why. If one were to approach a wandering hippy and ask, he might mention something about how four years are actually one and a bit 'real life months', but, through boredom and the ready availability of opium, he'd quickly become disinterested.

The hippies weren't there at the start, half a century ago. OK, so they were, but they didn't have anything to do with the incident. The incident that, so the people thought, could never possibly happen, despite its embarassingly obvious inevitability. Like a coke can on a cottons spin in the rusty washing machine of politics, the explosion was fifty years ago today.

The vast armies of the north arrived in the heart of the south with their sabres rattling, their voices chanting, their eyes lit by the hate of Hedes' damned housetenents, yet no-one batted an eyelid. The hordes, donned in red and black, waving banners and flags emblazoned with solitary red stars on black fields, approached the fortress of their southern enemies. Their enemies were waiting. Adorned in the blue and white colours of their own kingdom, the vast southern army stood, shouting, chanting, blue flags waving, outside their own fortress. The red army approached. The screams got louder, the voices hoarser, the chants exponentially more damaging to the collective reputations of their opponents mothers. A hot-dog vendor waved his own flag: "Sold Out". He hung it over his stall, and so a few soldiers of the north got all the more angry, hungry, and other words ending with 'gry'. Then, with one sentence, all hell broke loose. Echoing through the mists of a thousand bottles of lynx deodrant and twenty thousand overdone chicken balti pies, a phrase was exchanged between a blue and a red.

"The pies are shit down here"

So began the hooligan war, and the ceasing of football in Audioslavia for the forseeable future.

Fifty years on, an impossibly old and improbably wrinkled man sits at the only working computer in the country. He connects it to the only working landline in the land, and dialls himself onto the internet. Finding, finally, the business end of the NSWC website, he leaves a message, and then leaves in haste. The wheels are in motion, but theres so much more work to be done now.

The message reads:

If your nation is new to the World Cup, or if you have no KPB points, you may be able to take part in the preliminary Baptism of Fire Cup competition.
If this is your first Cup, please indicate whether you wish to be registered for the Baptism of Fire or not.

Puppets have to post with their nation and identify their master. One Puppet per Master nation, and you may only enter a puppet once you have already competed in a World Cup'

I have not participated before.I would like to.
