1st Annual Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup

The Emirate of Abu Omar wish to invite all to the very first Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup, which is to be held at the exclusive Royal Camel Club Arena in Ajaman, Abu Omar.

Camel racing is a popular sport in Abu Omar with many race nights held throughout the long summer months and for the first time ever Sheikh Mohammed ibn Al-Quuadi has allowed foreign racers to participate in Abu Omar.

The festivities are to last a week with two seperate cups up for grabs, which are the Abu Omar Camel Sprint Cup and the Abu Omar Long Distance Cup, each cup will begin with a number of knock-out heats culminating in the final race.

The rules are very, very simple:
1. Each camel is granted 10 ability points, which are divided by the player
between "short race points" and "long race points". So, you can have a camel
with, say, 6 points for short races and 4 for long races. Or 3-7, 8-2, 1-9,
5-5... You get the point.
2. For each race (100m or 1000m-long), I'll roll the dices for each camel
using a random number-generating software. If it's a 100m race and a camel
has 4 short racing points, I'll generate him four different numbers from 1
to 100. The camel with the highest number is the winner.

All nations are welcome to join the event and must fill in the below form with a maximum of five jockeys per nation (As many of your puppet nations are welcome to join). All camels will be automatically entered into both long and short distance cups.

Nation:
Camel name:
Jockey name:
Short race stat:*
Long race stat:*

*Total score must not exceed 10, so 1-9, 3-7, 5-5, you get the picture!

Can't let the Muslims have all the fun....

Two of the most famous monasteries in the Archregimancy, St. Catherine's in the Desert and St. Sava's in the Desert are, well, in the desert. Camels are a favoured means for travelling through the vast, searing wastes that separate the two (and, it must be noted, many smaller monasteries, sketes, and cells of the desert fathers of the Archregimancy are also best accessed by camel).

Thus Fr. Anthony of the Great Sands has volunteered to enter the Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup. Alas, his camel 'The Sayings of the Desert Fathers' is brilliant at long distance travel - he's a practical working camel - but terrible over short distances.

Most Gracious and Hospitable Emir, your invitation gladdens our hearts and stirs the vigor of our spirits. It is with modest resolve that we send our best camels along with their handlers and jockeys to participate in the glory and splendor of the races. May their presence be a benefit to all and enhance, in some small way, the magnificence of these days spent together in the desert joining with the traditions and ways of our fathers who have gone on before us.

Signed with all respect, deference, and benign competitiveness,

Western Afghanistan

As a show of thanks for Abu Omar's support in Western Afghanistan's Baptism of Fire 22 knockout campaign, the Under-Secretary of Sport, Ali Hirilashir, desires to field a team of the nation's best camel racers. Our mutual national religion, environmental climate, and cultural pasttimes are clearly similar, as Western Afghanistan's third most popular sport is easily camel racing, immediately behind football and buzkashi, respectively. We should add that our camel racing rules specify mostly only 1500 meter racing, so our camels will be much better equipped in the long distance races. The following is our squad for the first Camel Racing World Cup.

I do not have any delusions of winning against your much more professional teams, we are participating for an unbiased race to see which of the three of us has the better camel. It seems around the Empire race officials can be bought with a smile and a flirt and not just cash.

I, Emperor Giller, wish to be placed in contact with the officials running this race. Perhaps a deal can be reached to preserve the reputation of my Camel and Jockey.

FATHER ANTHONY REJECTS PRIZE MONEY
"Trust in the Lord is its Own Reward' Says Camel-riding Monk

By Fr. Nicholas the Scribe

The Archregimancy's participant in the forthcoming Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup, Fr. Anthony of the Great Sands, today announced that he would not accept any prize money should, God willing, he and his camel 'The Sayings of the Desert Fathers' achieve victory in the race. "Trust in the Lord is its own reward" said the dromedary-riding monk, who holds the record for fastest parchment delivery between the Archregimancy desert monasteries of St. Catherines and St. Sava's. "Surely these heathen Muslims I shall be racing against shall join me in rejecting base monetary reward, and race solely to bring glory to their faith, however base and heretical it might be" added a possibly overoptimistic Fr. Anthony.

It has been made widely known in the Camel racing circuit that the Archregimancy's participant, Fr. Anthony of the Great Sands has said that if he wins, he would not accept any prize money.

A number of Camel owners in Abu Omar have scoffed at this statement. Ahmed El Boureen, owner of the Weleej Camel Club told AANC earlier that he disagreed with Fr. Anthony comments that the 'Heathen Muslims' should reject any prize money. "I find it amusing. This man obviously does not know how camel racing works in Abu Omar. Camel racing is a way of life and I put food in my childrens mouth by raising camels that are good enough to win races. Rejecting prize money would mean denying my childrens wealth in the future."

Jeruselem go camel racing!

Jeruselem have entered the first Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup. While our camel racing team are not known like the world cup or football teams, the two entrants hope to make the top 5 as a starter. The rather small Little Inzi and experienced Fal Partazi are leading Jeruselem's campaign on their trust camels. Jeruselem would have sent more riders but other camels in Jeruselem refused to get on the plane so they were left home.

Little Inzi said "I don't expect to win much but I hope I can make an impact. I've been training hard and this is my chance to show the results. I'd like to enter using my full name but no one can spell it." as he held a small statuette of Dazza Dallas.

Kuronan Gal Enters A Camel RACE?

AJAMAN ABU OMAR-Hala Tehrani doning from a farm outside Sonomi packed up her classic desert cloak and sailed out to Abu Omar. After making through customs she spent her savings on a camel gave him a name and entered him in the race. "Kurona really isn't camel country," Hala joked "I've road camels before, but mostly horses. But they are generally the same in many ways." Hala then mentioned she comes from a long line of camel racers. "Before my great grandparents came to Kurona they used to run amature camel races all the time. They even entered in another camel racing cup and came really close to winning." Hala's camel Farah has proved to be a good racer so far. "Farah is the best. He really reminds me of my horse back home. He's very good I could tell by looking at him he was the right one." Hala's parents obviously couldn't be more proud. "She has the Tehrani spirit," said her father Ali Tehrani, "I pray to Allah that she will come home victorious, or at least come home proud of her accomplishments, and proud of her hertiage.
"I'm also so very proud of her," said Hala's mother Hafina. "I was a little worried when she told me she wanted to venture to the far away deserts and do something she's never tried before, but I felt she would be protected.

Princess Tomoyo Mikanu has also expressed her excietment over Hala's entry. "What a great thing for the girl's family and for Kurona. Ms. Tehrani shows boldness and initiatitve to leave her element and try this."

"I hope I win, but if I don't that will be all right."

Short race = 1 mile

Long race = 8 miles

Sheihk Cup = 5 miles

The format below, the first number (5) is the camels tournament number. The last number (7) is the camels short race stat and the seven numbers below is the camels results, as the camel has a stat of 7 the random generator generates 7 numbers, the highest being the number taken into account.

The winner of the Taphel Camel Racing Chamionship Pha Let Hion and his camel Wind of Thunder, did not do too well in the Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup. He has not past the group in the Short or the Long. Of courase Pha and Wind of Thunder are more use to the 45 mile steppe more than 8 miles desert. Hopefully he will brign his honor back in the Shiek's Cup.

OOC - I did well ... faints ...

Jeruselem Government News

Jeruselem riders feature in Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup!

Now, everyone remember Jeruselem's first football World Cup (XI). Yeah - we did badly - real badly. We have only two entries in the Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup, and you'd expect a mob of Moslem nationals to dominate and overwhelm our team of camel riders. No, we aren't being pushed over at all.

Little Inzi on his steed (camel) Par Nap named after Phar Lap but at the time they could not spell but the camel is still named Par Nar - finished 4th in the first race of Group 3 for the short race. A great effort for the young man who's camel is better known for it's misspelt name.

Fal Partazi on Desert Ghost won his race in Group 3 in long race! Yes, let us repeat that - HE WON. Oddly, he was chased all the way by Fr. Anthony of the Great Sands from The Archregimancy on a camel called "The Sayings of the Desert Fathers". Riding the lucky 13, he outwitted the monk all the way in one strange race where the other Arab riders were baffled by a camel-riding monk.

Great start for our team. Little Inzi said after his race "Camel racing isn't super glam like horse racing. You spend a lot of time trying to control a crazy camel. It's a good thing it was a nice clear un-windy day today although the sun was bit much sometimes."

Another Brother in the Races
Nomadic Press International -

Sun glinted off more than one tonsured head at the Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup as Brother Andre, a tribesman of the Nomadic Peoples of Pilgrimage and Sojourn, humbly ate the dust of fellow monk Fr. Anthony of the Great Sands from The Archregimancy who finished second in the running of the Cup's 3rd Long Race earlier today. When asked to comment on his loss, Brother Andre grinned and said that he was a newcomer to the sport and wasn't expecting to place this year. He said that all eyes should be on his team-mates Sammy Salaam and Ibn Geronimo, both runing in the 4th heat.

"Ibn Geronimo is a short track specialist, and he's riding Knock Kneed Lightning. That camel's name says it all," said Andre in his post race interview.

When asked how Muslim and Christian riders get along on the Pilgrimage and Sojourn team the monk replied, "We all have our moments and occasionally push each others buttons on different things. But despite our differences, we all dip our khubez in the hummous the same way." He went on to praise fellow camel jockey Abu Nuh who put in an amazing 3rd place finish on the Group 1 Long Distance, "That was completely unexpected, but it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy, Abu Nuh has been riding camels the better part of 2 decades, it's good to see him finally get some recognition." In fact, Abu Nuh is something of a local hero among The Nomadic Peoples and is the senior jockey on Pilgrimage and Sojourn's Team.

When asked to comment on Fr. Anthony's now famous promise to reject any prize money won at the Cup and if he would ever do likewise, Brother Andre seemed reluctant to comment. When pressed he finally said, "First of all I respect Fr. Anthony and the strength of his convictions. But, the way I see it - God asks us for all our time, talent, and treasure. He made me both a monk and a camel jockey. I'm not gaining any treasure through the first talent, so if I gain some treasure through the second then it's for His use anyways. If I rejected the prize money then I would really be robbing from God. Of course, it's a moot point for me this year God's material blessing is on others this year, but have we not all been blessed by these days in the desert?"

Brother Andre finished the interview with many kind words for his fellow riders and special words of recognition and thanks to the Emir of Abu Omar for hosting this years Cup.

SEMI-FINALS OF CAMEL RACE REACHED
Unknown Monk Denounced for Heresy

By Fr. Nicholas the Scribe

Fr. Anthony of the Great Sands, the greatest camel racer in Orthodoxy, temporarily distracted the nation from the Dreamed Realm Football World Cup qualifier derby between the Archregimancy and the Holy Empire by reaching the semi-finals of the Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup after an easy second-place in his qualifying heat.

"I give thanks to the Lord for the fine form of 'Sayings of the Desert Fathers'" said Fr. Anthony after the race, who added that he was 'relieved' to qualify after his disastrous last place in the short race qualifier.

Fr. Anthony finished slightly behind Jeruselem camel Desert Ghost after Fr. Anthony appeared to ease off in the final kilometer in order to protect 'Desert Fathers' for the upcoming semi-final, where the monastic rider is widely considered to start a strong favourite to reach the final.

Elsewhere, Fr. Anthony was quick to denounce obscure monk 'Brother Andre' for the heresy of false ecumenicism after the Pilgrimage and Sojurn rider announced that Muslims and Christians "dip our khubez in the hummous the same way." "I suspect this 'Brother Andre' to be a heretical Catholic schismatic" said Fr. Anthony, "and while this lover of freemasonry may not care how he dips his khubez, I can assure my fellow Orthodox monks that I always bless my hummus with Holy Water if a heathen Muslim has been within 10 metres of my food bowl."

Monk Denounces Freemasonry, Upholds Ancient Proverb
Nomadic Press International -

Surprised by his newfound notoriety, Brother Andre of The Nomadic Peoples of Pilgrimage and Sojourn was quick to denounce any ties to Freemasonry in response to being denounced as a heretic by fellow camel jockey Fr. Anthony of the Archregimancy. In particular, Brother Andre's use of a regional colloquialism came under fire as quoted below from The Monastic Times

"Fr. Anthony was quick to denounce obscure monk 'Brother Andre' for the heresy of false ecumenicism after the Pilgrimage and Sojurn rider announced that Muslims and Christians "dip our khubez in the hummous the same way." "I suspect this 'Brother Andre' to be a heretical Catholic schismatic."

When asked about these charges Brother Andre replied, "I am sure Fr. Anthony could teach me a thing or two about most subjects, but really, this is all a big misunderstanding. I am a simple monk and live a simple life. I try to speak plainly about matters. This saying "dip our khubez in the hummous the same way" is an ancient phrase of our forefathers in Piligrimage and Sojourn. It simply means that in our day-to-day lives most people are the same. We all need to eat, drink, sleep, and live in peace. Of course there are deeper theological differences between Muslims and Christians and lines which I cannot cross. But this does not mean I can't get along with them in everyday situations like eating hummous or camel racing. But, leave it to one of my esteemed Orthodox cousins to try to find a ominous and esoteric meaning where none was intended."

When asked about Fr. Anthony's comment that "[he] always bless[es] [his] hummus with Holy Water if a heathen Muslim has been within 10 metres of [his] food bowl." Brother Andre shook his head and said, "that kind of language seems a bit inflammatory, especially as a guest of the honored Emir of Abu Omar. I think our good friend from the Archregimancy has perhaps confused eating 'food surrounded by infidels' with 'food sacrificed to idols.' Two entirely different things. Uhhhh . . . not that I'm calling anyone an infidel."

With that the young monk blushed and hurried off to help Abu Nuh the senior jockey on Pilgrimage and Sojourns team prepare his camel 'Sandrunner' for the upcoming Long Race Semi Finals. If camel and rider do well and advance, the good Christian Brother could be playing support crew for his Muslim teammate against Fr. Anthony should 'The Sayings of The Desert Fathers' make a strong showing in the second heat of the semi-finals.

After hearing the idea that 'Sandrunner' and 'The Sayings of the Desert Fathers' might face off in the Finals, nearby Pilgrimage and Sojourn jockey Sammy Salaam took a long drag on the narghile and stated, "Their gonna be calling that guy's camel 'Hot Air From Some Dead Heretics' pretty soon." Sammy was later given an official reprimand from The Sporting Master of the Nomadic Peoples of Pilgrimage and Sojourn for Comments Unbecoming a Sportsman. Sammy did not seem to care, but was unavailable for further comment.

Transliteration Riots Sparked at Camel Racing World Cup
The Phoneme and Morpheme Press -

Tensions flared in the the streets of the Emirate of Abu Omar today following post-race interviews and statements made by two Christian riders. Surprisingly, it was not their verbal sparring over theology and ecumenism that triggered the brief spate of rioting, but rather the transliteration method used by the new services doing the reporting.

Nomadic Press International clearly used the transliteration "hummous" when quoting an ancient proverb Brother Andre used in reference to intra-team relations on the Muslim-Christian Pilgrimage and Sojourn racing team.

In a follow-up article, a The Monastic Times writer Fr. Nicholas clearly used "hummous" when quoting NPI article, but chose the transliteration "hummus" when writing in his own voice. No one could have anticipated the intense reaction the reading public displayed over this difference of morphological opinions.

Sporting Police arrived to break up the riots, but were sent back to their barracks when it was realized that no sports fans were involved in the unrest. The Teaching English as a Second and or Foreign Language Professional Association later issued an apology after it was discovered that the overwhelming majority of the rioters were English Teachers. They had been joined by a small cadre of young boys who could not pass up a good stone-toss. The boys were sent back home largely disappointed as nothing harder than colorful pejoratives had been thrown about. It remains to be seen if the teachers will be allowed to view the remainder of the World Cup events.

Meanwhile, a special investigation into the unrest re. the "hummous" vs. "hummus" scandal reveals that strong feelings can be found on both sides of the debate, even outside the circle of teaching professionals.

"Sure it's just an insignificant little 'o', but it's always been there, and I can't stand the thought of someone taking that 'o' away . . . hummous just wouldn't be the same without it," observed one bystander.

His traveling companion emphatically disagreed, "Superfluous vowel inclusion is a shameful thing . . . shameful."

A young boy was overheard singing as he scampered away with a pocketful of stones, "You say hummous, I say hummus, hummous, hummus . . . "

Can Hala Tehrani Remain Steadfast in The Race?

ABDU OMAR-Hala Tehrani and her camel Farah have been doing well for themselves so far however in a slightly disappointing turn of events Hala only managed to score in the Short-Race Semi-Final and not in the Long-Race Semi- final. This is due to a sand strom which slowed her down considerably. "I've never been through a sand storm before. I guess I was a bit Niave being a native Kuronan and subject to many harsh storms that I could deal with any thing. However I just was forced to slow down." It could be the end of the road for Ms. Tehrani which she is finding a tad dissapointing. Homefront reaction is not yet avaiable as news is still being processed.

In a related story, Tensions flared in the the streets of the Emirate of Abu Omar today following post-race interviews and statements made by two Christian riders. Surprisingly, it was not their verbal sparring over theology and ecumenism that triggered the brief spate of rioting, but rather the transliteration method used by the new services doing the reporting. In turn Hala was asked about her Christian comepetors. "I see not the reason to drag the polotics of religion into a race." She said. "But if you really must know, even though I'm Muslim I get along fine with my Christian companions. I have a lot of Christian freinds back home, so these people are just no diffrent." Neither Hara or her camel Farah have been caught in the middle of the fights.

Damanucus makes progress in international sport debut

Sandstorms may have stopped races in Abu Omar, but not celebrations, as Ashen Host, one of two entries by Damanucus, makes the Short Race Semi-Final of the 1st Annual Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup.

The win also marks a milestone in Damanucus' sports history, who make their debut into the international sports arena.

Ashen Host's jockey, Greer Toben, admits she didn't think she stood a chance on international soil, especially considering the camel's track record.

"He's a lot more used to long distance than short, even though he stands fairly equal in both," she said yesterday.

Due to the landscape in Damanucus, Toben, Ashen Host and trainer Mark Gruenfeld, had to travel overseas to prepare her for the race.

"I hope, in light of this success, we will finally be able to get some camel-racing tracks in Damanucus," Gruenfeld stated.

Eporer Linard Skyre was unable to comment yesterday, but commentary from his office says that he will consider this proposal seriously.

High Falutin', another camel entered into the competition, was beaten in all races, and is set to return home with jockey Ahmed Hogar.

High Falutin', a short race specialist, can seventh in both races.

Ambrose-Douglas Special Sports Report

ABU OMAR- John Abonis, Ambrose-Douglas' only camel jockey, made a strong showing at the 1st Abu Omar Camel Racing World Cup. Abonis and his camel 'Peacemaker' came in second in their short run heat, qualifying them for the semi-finals. During the long run heat, 'Peacemaker' fell back to early and never recovered, finishing 12th. Abonis spoke to reporters after the race.

"We were ecstatic with the result of the first race. We never expected to do so well. The second race was a disappointment, sure, but we've but Ambrose-Douglas on the map for international camel racing. Now we just have to go out, focus on the semis, and try to make the finals."

Abonis has said all along that his main goal was to get camel racing popular in Ambrose-Douglas. He seems to have achieved that, at least for the moment, as camel racing hysteria has taken over, especially in rural towns doting the countryside. 'Peacemaker' camel plush toys are selling out all across the country, and ADSN expects the highest-ever ratings when the semis take place. Estimates expect 47 million of the nation's 62 million people to tune in to watch their only camel go up against the world's best.

CAMEL RACE SEMI-FINALS DELAYED
Western Monk Condemned for Heretical Spelling

By Fr. Nicholas the Scribe

Monastic sporting fans across the Archregimancy were left with nothing to do except pray last night after dangerous sandstorms delayed the semifinals of the Camel Racing World Cup at the same time that IT issues delayed the second half of the 35th Football World Cup.

Fr. Anthony of the Great Sands filled the time by denouncing heretical monk Brother Andre of Pilgrimage and Sojourn for inflaming the long-standing dispute over the transliteration of 'hummus'. "When will these Western schismatics learn?" said Fr. Anthony. "First they unilaterally add a word to the Nicene Creed, now they add letters to transliterations from Semitic languages. Just as the double procession of the Holy Spirit, as formulated by the Western addition of filioque to the Creed, is deeply heretical - we need only read the opinions of St. Photius on this particular matter - this unilateral addition of a letter to the transliteration of an otherwise blameless and innocent chickpea dip has led to rioting and violence on the streets of Abu Omar. As if the sacking of Constantinople during the Fourth Crusade wasn't enough, now these Western schismatics seek to destroy Abu Omar through the violent enforcement of their heretical ways."

Brother Andre was temporarily unavailable for comment, as he was too busy assisting a Muslim heathen to prepare for victory over a fellow Christian, thus further emphasising the amoral duplicity of the heretics.

The Abu Omar Camel racing authorities have confirmed that the semi-finals will be going ahead tonight under floodlight after the improvement in weather. The raging sand storms have given way to glorious blue skies and temperatures up to 38c. A horde of ground staff are hard at work sweeping sand from the stadium and life is returning to normal in Ajaman.

The AO weather office have said that this weeks sand storms are the worst ever on record to hit the region.

Kurona
10-06-2007, 00:26
Immediatly following the race Hala retreated back to her hotel room. She took a long shower and washed all her clothes. Her clothes were still full of dust after the violent sand storms that hit. She would be heading back home soon. There was a knock at her door "Hala,"

"I'm comming."

It was actually one of the many freind she made while staying here. She wasn't a racer but she was always there cheering Hala on. "The results are in, you made 3rd Place in the Sheikh Cup 2007."

"Yeah along with 55 others."

"Hala you musn't get down on your self. I know you had high-hopes to take home the gold but still do you know how much you accomplished. A girl who comes from a place with no deserts and no cammelsm who's only experience is horse riding. You amaze me Hala. And you've amazed you fellow countrymen back home. Just look at your scores. I bet next year if you tried again you would make it higher if not second."

"Well I guess."

"Of course so. Now you are going to get dressed and you are going to come to the Awards Cerimoney."

"All right you win."
