United States annexes Iraq

After a public plebiscite today, the United States Congress formally began deliberations to ratify a treaty annexing Iraq into the United States.
This will bring democracy and the American way of life to the middle east.

Both sides hope the unification of the two governments can be done peacefully. But there is more work to be done after Iraqis voted by a ten person majority to join the United States.

Officials hope this will end the Iraqi civil war. The US government now takes on responsibility for ending that civil war. Part of the treaty is that Kurdistan will hold a referendum on independence and or state hood. Iraq becomes the second nation in history to join the US as state. The first was Texas which was required to give up some of its territory. The new treaty requires Iraq to do the same thing. Because of this, there could be 3 seperate states where Iraq is today, if the Iraqi people have anything to say about it.

The Iraqi national constitution will soon be replaced with a state constitution drafted by Iraqi lawmakers. Iraq will also get start off with one representative in the US Congress and two Senators.

Speaking for the First Speaker, we find it beyond humerous, and quite possibly down right moronic, for the UnitedStatesOfAmerica- to participate in this course of action. Of course, far be it from us to judge. Still, we will watch on and most likely point and laugh when it fails horribly. Best wishes and such

The American Senate has begun deliberations on the annexation treaty.
There is some opposition building against the treaty in the US Senate with some Senators saying it is against US interests to expand into the middle east territorially.
California Senator Bimbo Jane said "The best way we can help end the fighting in Iraq is not to annex them but to provide humanitarian assistance, withdraw our forces and respect that Al Qaeda is that country's rightful ruler."

Wyoming Senator William Harkin argued that "if the people of Iraq voted for democracy why should we deny them that right just to satisfy our enemies? If the people of Iraq want to be Americans why should we deny them a say in the matter just because some of us want to capitulate to international terrorism."

The two Senators have begun trading barbs on the floor of the Senate which could drag out the debate.

Anti-arab protestors are gathering in front of the Senate to demand the Senate reject the treaty.

They are upset that millions of Arabs could become US citizens overnight.
"The only good Arab is a dead Arab" said the groups leader Muktari Sabrina, a resident PhomPhom Wisconsin.

"I don't want Ahab the Arab coming to America" said Ned Landers of Springfield Missouri.

The People Against Foreigners first made news 2 years ago when it organized a million man march against illegal immigration.

The campaign to ratify the Iraq Annexation treaty intensified in the Senate today with both sides trying to recruit undecided Senators to support their causes.

The Divine and Holy Empire of Gurguvungunit has declared war on the United States, not because of any sympathy with the nation of Iraq but because of a new 'pwn teh n00bz' campaign that passed the Gurguvii Parliament sometime last month. As of three days ago, the Third Fleet has been placed on high alert. The Third, one of Gurguvungunit's twelve Great Fleets, departed from Barrowes-on-Ouse this morning. The Third is not a particularly large fleet by Gurguvii standards, but analysts project that total annihilation of the United States navy will not require additional forces.

Admiral Penning, commander of the Third Fleet, made a passing comment to news personnel this morning regarding 'those silly Nimitz things', and went on to state that 'an Ark Royal fleet carrier could knock out their entire active fleet'. While we believe his statement to have been made in jest, the small size of the Nimitz class carriers operated by the USN does not lead to a favourable estimate of their capabilities.

Just kidding. This has been a message from KWJZ News.

OOC: Seriously? Iraq? I thought this was a general forum thread, so I came here to laugh at the OP. Turns out not. But still, originality much?

It is interesting to me that you are as unfamiliar with the United States Constitution as you are.

Yes, they would hypothetically get two seats in the Senate. Unfortunately, seats in the House of Representatives are handled rather differently. They are apportioned by population.

As a result, Iraq would get rather more seats than one.

You've got two ways of doing it. Currently according to the Reapportionment Act of 1929, the House of Representatives is fixed at 435 seats. As a result you would have to strip away seats from other states in order to free up enough for Iraq's population of, as of 2006, 26,783,383.

For comparison, the population of California is 33,871,648 as of 2000. So you've gotta free up an awful lot of seats. Naturally, that loss of representation is going to be extremely politically unpopular. Now, any way you do this is going to lower the representation by the existing states, but a less obvious way of doing so is to simply repeal the Reapportionment Act and make the House bigger. Under this plan you'd need forty-two new seats. This would also give Iraq forty-four electoral votes.

Split them into additional states and you increase their electoral power even further, since those 42 seats will be unchanged (if divided among multiple new states), but you'd be increasing the size of the Senate further, since every state must have two Senators. Now, if you want to hand 44 (or more!) electoral votes - more than enough to swing a Presidential election - to a nation that just got forcibly annexed and thus probably doesn't much like you, that's up to you. But I'd recommend against it.

Sad, honestly, that you have to be lectured on your own laws and politics by a minister of a foreign power. Might want to think a little more next time.

It saddens us to see that the United States is even bothering to annex Iraq. Iraq should be cleansed of all the inhuman filth that lives there and then turned to glass to remove any trace of taint. We call upon the Americans to realise the error of their ways and begin the killings.

The United States respects the willingness of the Menelmacaran government to express itself on this matter. However we believe they should educate themselves as to the correct interpretation of our Constitution. The US Constitution only requires new states to have at least one representative and 2 Senators as the treaty provides for. Further, it states that it is up to the Congress to decide how new states shall be admitted.
For the time being, if admitted, Iraq will have 2 Senate and 1 House Representative. The US Congress, working with the people of Iraq will determine a formula for ensuring that Iraqis get their fair share of representation in Congress. I cannot speculate on how that will be worked out since the Congressional leadership nor the Iraqi leadership have not spoken of it to us lately, but have rather, been talking directly to each other.

The US deplores Skgorria's attitude toward Iraqis. I note that his statement sounds very similar to the words of Adolf Hitler's envisioned "Final Solution to the Jewish Problem."
We would call upon SKgorria to participate in a more constructive role. We have already seen the evils that genocide works on those whome it touches.
Iraq is the cradle of the world's oldest civilizations and as such we believe the Iraqis should be given special respect. If they change their minds after joining our union, I believe the treaty of annexation stipulates they retain a right to leave on their recognizance provided they pay back the US government any funds used for upgrading Iraqi society and infrastructure.

Internal Senate Memo:
To: Senate Majority Leader Gregory Hoota.
From: Minority Leader Bimbo Jane.

We suggest we end this discussion about Iraq. In return for your agreement to reject allowing arabs into our nation, we will refrain from publicizing certain papers linking you to the propositioning of young teen girls for certain lewd actions. We have already hired a young girl and her family and they are willing to say to the nation that you raped her. We suggest that you give in. You have no choice cause all the cards are in our hands. This isn't blackmail. This is only political deal making. Give up Iraq or face national humiliation and go to prison for a crime you never committed.

Bimbo Jane
Senate Minority Leader

The aid sent the message through the Senate's email system. The Senator Jane and her tight circle were sure they had the majority leader in their clutches. He had no choice but to bend to their will. Jane's party would come out the winner. First, they would be credited with preventing arabs from becoming US citizens since polls showed her constituents hated Arabs. She would also come off as a peacemaker for insisting on total US withdrawal from Iraq and for letting the enemy have Iraq. Her campaign would say that giving them Iraq would mean that all terrorism everywhere would end. In the end, she would get what she really wanted, total control of the White House and total control of the entire United States.
She was moving her chess peices smoothly and calmly into place preparing to make her next big move.

On behalf of the Armed Galactic Republic, we denounce this annexation and have made moves to ensure that Iraq remains a free and separate nation.

*with that announcement, the 1st Corneliuan Naval Battlegroup of 400 ships begins to deploy from ports from around Corneliu and begins to make its way towards the United States with additional ships moving towards the Persian Gulf. Troops are being called up and began to load onto transports for their voyage across the sea.

Upon analysis of your rather strange planet, we have observed that it has an infinite number of landmasses that seem to pop into existence and die out in large numbers every day, like quantum fluctuations on a massive scale. Due to its large size, it is highly possible that multiple landmasses named the United States of America and Iraq exist independently of one another, with different populations and climates, etc. It is, therefore, quite possible that the Iraq the United States has annexed has a population of one million and is set in a lush rainforest, as nothing of that sort was specified in the United States's message.

Naturally, as you actually reside upon the planet in question, you could easily know more about this incidence than we do; nonetheless, you may find this useful to take into consideration.

We appreciate your concern about the prospects of Iraq's decision to join the union. If the Iraqi people themselves did not wish to join they would not have voted to do so.
However, given that there are several hundred different Iraq's (many of which have identical terrain and some of which have different terrain) on this planet we are confused as to which one you are sending forces to keep seperate and independent? The Iraq which voted to join the union we have designated as Iraq 3G. Are you referring to Iraq 1A? Both have identical populations and landscapes but the latter is more pro-US than the latter. While we welcome 3G into the union, we would not do so for 1A as we would never force anyone into our union.

We are sending them to the one that you are annexing obviously. You have precisely 48 hours to cease this at once or we will declare war. This is your final warning.

OOC: I'm not going to play the type of game your obviously want to play so play straight up.
