Gehenna Tartarus
09-04-2007, 15:23
For a reigning sovereign or even a lesser royal to make a simple visit even within the family is always a matter of great ceremony and moment. This was certainly the case with the visit of Her Imperial Majesty, Gehenna, the Empress of Tartarus, to the Confederated Peoples, her first since that nation had assumed its most recent form.

Gehenna had been officially invited both by High King Owain, in his capacity as Head of the Commonwealth, by Michael Eaton, the President of the Confederated Peoples in Congress Assembled. She had been received by both men along with a military honor guard and quite a few dignitaries of various sorts. She had met with various top-level Confederal officials to discuss Confederal-Tartaran relations, although nothing more than a general reaffirmation of mutual amity had emerged from those friendly chats.

In New Amsterdam itself, there had been any number of ceremonial events and receptions thrown by high society, the Government, the diplomatic corps, Confederal royalty and the aristocracy. All made the same basic point: That Gehenna and her nation were viewed very highly in the Confederated Peoples and that she was to be received with the highest honors.

There were, of course, some protests. The Empress was informed simply that these were an inevitable result of a democratic system like that practiced in the Confederated Peoples and that they were generally unrepresentative of popular opinion and were conducted by unrepresentative groups. It was pointed out to the Empress how much larger the crowds were at her more open and public appearances and she was told that these were far more representative of the view of the Confederal people.

Gehenna, who had witnessed many things in her life, never expected everyone to be happy with her visits. She knew there were many aspects of her nation that was different from the ones she visited, and that always led to upset among the natives. Just like Tartarians reacted to things they were not happy about other visiting nations.

The Empress merely smiled her way through all the events, never letting anything that happened around her bother her. She had seen things done by her own father that made a few protests pale by comparison. So, altogether, Gehenna was enjoying her visit and was happy that she was given the chance to see the new changes at first hand.

Once all the ceremony was passed, however, time had been set aside for Gehenna to spend a relaxing period with her cousin the High Queen as well as the High King and a number of other prominent royals in the tropical island State of Kilauea at the elegant Lilalu Palace with its sometimes odd but always dignified traditions. The Empress and her cousin were soon shown to the finest set of suites in the East Wing of the Palace along with the Queen of Hipolis, the Queen of Finara, the Grand Duchess of Shieldcrest and the High Queen's sister, Elizabeth. They had a few hours to themselves to get settled in.

Gehenna, and her cousin Elizabeth, Marissa’s sister who was also present at the High Queen’s invitation, quickly made themselves at home in their rooms. Marissa too took some time to freshen up and dress in something a little lighter, for the days ahead were going to be a more relaxed than those that had just passed.

All three women were looking forward to spending some time together, while getting to know those that would be there with them. It was nice, especially for Marissa and Gehenna, to get to know people in a more informal setting.

* * * * *

The High Queen had finished dressing and was sitting on the edge of the bed, taking a few moments, before joining the rest of the party. Before she could become too settled there was a soft knock on Marissa's door.

Getting up from the bed, Marissa looked over at the door. “Come in,” she called as she stood.

Gwendolyn slid into the room. The blond woman was dressed in a simple yet elegant green dress, designed to be worn comfortably in a relaxed setting. "Hello, Your Majesty."

A smile burst onto Marissa’s lips as she moved towards the younger woman. “Your Royal Highness,” she greeted Owain’s sister.

'Issi.' Gwendolyn said with a broader smile, embracing her sister-in-law.

Marissa smiled, as returned Gwendolyn's embrace. As she took a step back, she gazed into the other's face. "I hope I am not keeping everyone," she said with a smile, knowing that was not always the quickest person to get ready.

"I don't think so." Gwendolyn said. "We're not actually doing anything for awhile. I just didn't want to be alone in my apartments 'settling in.' So what do you think of the East Wing?' Gwendolyn responded.

"The East Wing is beautiful," Marissa moved a little further into the room. "Please, make yourself comfortable." As she spoke, the High Queen moved back to the edge of the bed and perched herself.

Gwendolyn smiled and moved to sit down next to Marissa. "Have you seen your cousin or your sister since we arrived at the Palace?"

"A little before we all went to our rooms, but not for more than a few minutes," Marissa replied. "There will be plenty of time while we are here."

"Owain made sure that your rooms were close together." Gwendolyn needlessly pointed out. "In fact, all of us ladies are near each other in the same wing. It should be relaxing."

Marissa could not help the smile that appeared at Owain's thoughtfulness. "It will be nice having everyone so close. His Majesty does think of everything."

"He tries." Gwendolyn said. "Although anachronistic local tradition has as much to do with it as consideration. Traditionally, men and women have stayed in separate wings here."

"There is no fighting tradition," Marissa responded, knowing from experience. "Of course, it does mean that one can wander down the hallways without fear of some strange man spotting one in one's nightwear." She laughed softly, knowing that it was unlikely to happen anyway.

"That is actually rather close to the traditional reason." Gwendolyn said. "This place, because of its location, was frequently used by people seeking to swim at the beach. Bathing suits were considered silly modern inventions by many people who stayed here and considered far too immodest for mixed company by many others. The whole arrangement is to keep the men and women from seeing each other swimming."

"Are bathing suits considered less silly now?" Marissa asked; unsure whether the idea of sneaking down naked to the beach excited her or repulsed her.

"Of course." Gwendolyn assured her.

"That is comforting," Marissa replied, with a smile. "It is going to be strange having Owain so far away and yet so close."

"But you will be with your sister and your cousin." Gwendolyn pointed out. "Perhaps it will be like when you were younger."

Marissa felt her smile grow. "It will certainly be similar. My cousin, though, was rarely sleeping just down the hall."

“Perhaps we should go see how Her Imperial Majesty is settling in?" Gwendolyn suggested.

“Yes, we should," Marissa replied, rising from the bed, before turning to face Gwendolyn. "I am sure she is settled enough to want to do something other than sit in her room. I know I am anxious to have a look around."

“Very well then." Gwendolyn said, rising to follow Marissa.

* * * * *

The Empress of Tartarus, down the hall from where the High Queen was talking to Gwendolyn, stood by the window, gazing out onto the view. It had been a long time since she found herself outside of Tartarus, on what could be described as a holiday. In fact, the only time she had been outside the Empire on any informal business was when visiting her Mother’s family and that was on rare occasions, due the Emperor’s paranoia.

Of course, Gehenna had spent time at a beach before, and had her own palace that stood on a cliff side, over looking the sea. She suddenly thought how nice it would be to spend some quiet time alone with Balion once she returned. She would have to suggest it to him next time they spoke.

She turned back into the room and smiled at her companion, who was finishing off the final touches to her unpacking. Isla had been a part of her life for so long, that Gehenna would have been more surprised not to see her fussing over the little details. The older woman continued her chore, trying to make herself as inconspicuous as possible.

“That will be enough for now, Isla,” Gehenna said, almost startling the poor woman. “I believe I can handle the rest on my own.”

Isla bobbed a small curtsey. “Yes, ma’am.” The woman then left the Empress alone, knowing that should she be needed for anything, she would be in easy reach.

Gehenna returned to the window, once more looking out at the scene below her. She pushed open the window, delighting in the smell and sound of the sea. The salty air had a very calming effect. For several minutes, she stood silently, just savouring the peace and quiet, knowing that for a few days, at least, she could forget all about work, or at least she would attempt to. Of course, she was never fully out of contact with the Empire.

Turning back into the room, Gehenna was just wondering how best to fill a little of her free time, when her thoughts were interrupted by a knock at the door. She paused for a moment, then invited the person to come in.

* * * * *

Lady Elizabeth Devenish, the youngest daughter of the Duke of Lorm and sister of the High Queen, was not in her room, unlike the other Tartarians. She was not one for sitting around waiting when there were far more interesting things to do. As the sun was shining outside, she decided to take a short stroll in the garden, making the most of a little solitude before everyone gathered together.

Like the other ladies, Elizabeth had on a light summer dress, once that seemed to flow in the soft breeze. She was excited at having been invited to share some time with her sister, and was pleased that she had been able to make the journey with her cousin. It had been a while since she had spent a lot of time with Gehenna, the older woman having become very busy since her father’s death.

Not wanting to stray too far from the building, Elizabeth decided her best option was to merely work her way around the palace, eventually finishing where she started.

Grand Duchess Gwendolyn walked in with High Queen Marissa. She curtsied deeply to the Empress even as she smiled quite warmly. "Good afternoon, Your Majesty. Her Majesty and I were wondering if you might want to take some of this time to look around the palace. Protocol officers do, after all, have quite the habit of grossly overestimating the length of time it takes someone to settle into a room."

...

It didn't take Elizabeth all that long to work her way around the East Wing and the back of the palace. The palace itself was ornate, an essentially Victorian design which nonetheless possessed a strong native influence. The back of the palace was at the shore itself and Elizabeth, as she walked around the back, was actually walking on small sand dunes. It was only as she approached the corner separating the central hall of the palace from the West Wing that she heard men laughing and cheering rather loudly. Just as she was about to turn the corner, a man fell into view, almost toppling her over. He wore a pair of black breeches and boots but he had taken shirt off. He had the physique of a champion athlete although his face, a bit on the puggish side, left a fair amount to be desired. He was a redhead and he looked tossled and a bit worn out, as though he were in the middle of a fight. When he saw Elizabeth, he jumped to his feet and gave a quick bow and a ready smile. "Pardon me, lass. I didn' see you there." And then he was back around the corner.

Gehenna smiled warming as she welcomed Marissa and Gwendolyn in. “Your Royal Highness, it would be a pleasure to take a look around the palace. It is certainly and interesting place and I am sure that it has its fair share of stories.” She paused and looked at Marissa before returning her gaze to the Grand Duchess. “As my cousin is most aware, back in the Empire we too have protocol officers that like to keep guests in their room for long periods of time. I am most grateful that you came to rescue me.”

Marissa nodded her head, agreeing with Gehenna’s words. “As Her Majesty and I are both here for the first time, I hope that we can prevail upon you, Gwendolyn, to do the honours and lead us around.” The High Queen looked at her cousin. “I have learnt a little of the history of this palace and I must say that I am pleased that some of the traditions are no longer continued. Although, it is traditional for the ladies and gentlemen to be separated during their stay here.”

“That is certainly a new tradition to me,” Gehenna replied, after giving the revelation some thought. “I do not believe that we have anywhere in Tartarus that does that, although I am unable to speak for every residence in the Empire.”

The High Queen smiled. “Her Royal Highness, will be able to give a much better explanation, but it relates to bathing without suits. Apparently, it was not the correct form of dress.”

Gehenna turned to Gwendolyn with a smile. “I hope that we will not run into any naked people while we are having our tour.”

* * * * *

Elizabeth was too busy gazing around her, that the first she saw of the man that appeared was when he had almost fallen over her. She had heard the sounds coming from around the corner, but she had assumed that the men in the party had already come downstairs. Women did have a bad reputation for taking their time, after all.

“No, ah…,” she began, before stopping suddenly as the man disappeared. “Harm done,” she finished lamely.

Her interested was now piqued, as she focused on the direction that man had disappeared to. She took a step then stopped, suddenly feeling like she was about to intrude. But they did sound like they were having fun, and surely a look would not hurt.

Moving careful, trying not to make a lot of noise, Elizabeth stepped around the corner, hoping that whatever was happening, she was not going to be in the way of.

"Actually, Your Majesties, this is my first time here as well." Gwendolyn confessed. "My brother is received here as he is received everywhere in the Confederated Peoples as Head of the Commonwealth, the living symbol of the free union between all the Confederal Members, but that's a development of the last few years. He's not the monarch of Kīlauea like he is of Marlund or Jagiella. So we haven't had a chance to visit yet since the original Danaan High Kingdom joined its destiny to that of Laneria and others in the Confederated Peoples."

"This is a royal palace though." Gwendolyn went on. "Kīlauea was a monarchy before Laneria instigated a revolution and installed a republican government when then sought status as a Lanerian State. Most of the local population, if my tutors were correct, didn't see this as some liberation from oppression but as an attack on their rightful leader and a foreign annexation of their country. Tensions have eased some since then but now that the Confederated Peoples has changed the political situation a little, many Kīlaueans are advocating the reestablishment of the local monarchy on terms similar to those prevailing in the monarchist Confederal Members. I'm sure all this change is even more confusing to outside observers than it is to us but I'm sure it'll become less needlessly complicated as things settle somewhat."

...

As Elizabeth rounded the corner, she saw the man she had just seen and a handsome, dark-haired man who might have been vaguely familiar were engaged in a fist-fight. Their muscular frames were ducking and darting around a small circle as they struck at each other, both grinning the whole time. The other men, including the High King, were gathered around watching this display with some measure of amusement.

“It appears that we will all be discovering new things today,” the High Queen announced as they stepped through the door of Gehenna’s room and headed into the hallway. “I do hope that you will share with us anything you do know about this place, Gwendolyn.” She turned for a moment to the Empress of Tartarus. “There is so much I still have to learn about my new home.”

Gehenna nodded, having had a lifetime to learn about Tartarus and still knowing that there was much she did had to discover. “Gaining knowledge is one of the most enjoyable pastimes. If we knew everything, there would be no reason to leave your home or country. I enjoy being able to discover new things, new places and meeting new people.”

Smiling, Marissa continued to walk as she spoke, leading the way to the stairs. “We shall certainly be doing all three here.” Her attention turned to her sister-in-law. “If you will find us a good starting point, we shall begin our adventure.”

* * * * *

It had been a while since Elizabeth had watched a fist fight. Her brother and his friends would enjoy a tussle during the summer, but as he got older they tended to find other ways of entertaining themselves, most of the time away from the family estate.

Keeping to the side of the house and away from the amusement, she stopped. Her eyes fixed to the fun happening before her. It was clear from where she stood that the group were enjoying the entertainment.

For a moment, she wondered whether she should return to her room or seek out Marissa, but she decided that it would not hurt if she watched for a moment. She would continue on her way shortly.

Gwendolyn nodded a little, considering exactly where she should start after all. She looked briefly around the corridor which seemed to be lined with suites similar to those the three women were staying in. "I think that perhaps the gardens attached to this wing might be the best place. I think they are through that door down there." Gwendolyn said.

She led the other women through a fairly elegant double door out into a luscious, tropical garden. The plants looked quite exotic and many of them were quite large. The flowers, especially, tended to be huge. Vines had been cultivated to cover much of the gardens human construction. While there was a clear path and benches and some open areas, it was almost like walking through the local jungles.

...

After a moment, Elizabeth was spotted. There was some brief, hurried conversation among the assembled men before Owain rose and gestured her over, smiling in a rather relaxed fashion.

“The gardens sound like a perfect place to begin,” Marissa announced as she followed Gwendolyn outside. They had been in cars and then in rooms since the beginning of the trip, and the High Queen needed some fresh air and a chance to stretch her legs. “It is such a pleasant day, that it would be wasted inside. Do you not agree, Your Majesty?”

Gehenna, who was busy looking around her, nodded her head with a smile. “It is certainly a good place to start.” Though in the back of her mind, she could not help wondering what was going through Chris Denton’s mind at the thought of her wandering around outside.

Walking a little distance ahead, Marissa began admiring the plant life, noticing how dense the area felt. “The flora here is very impressive,” she said to her sister-in law, as she became caught up in the views. “It almost feels like we are in some wild countryside rather than a palace grounds. I do not think that I have ever been to grounds like this before.”

Thinking back to her own palace gardens, Gehenna had to admit that she had nothing quite so exotic looking. Of course, her security detail hated the flower garden with its high hedges and the secret garden with its concealing walls. The idea of having even more blocked views would send them in a panic.

* * * * *

Elizabeth stood still for a moment, then slowly walked towards the High King. She dropped a curtsey and smiled. “I do hope that I am not interrupting, Your Majesty,” she asked, hoping that she had not just broken some tradition of ‘men only’ time. “I was just taking a stroll around the gardens…taking some air.” She paused, realising that she should give her sister’s husband some time to reply.

"This is a tropical island, after all." Gwendolyn noted. "I doubt more conventional plants could have been grown here even if they had been desired, Your Majesty."

The Grand Duchess placed her hand on the thick, green vines covering one of the walls. "It actually reminds me quite a lot of Pele. A lot of the plants seem similar, at least."

...

Owain smiled warmly. "Your Highness, I consider you my sister. You need have no fear of interrupting. Their Lordships were just satisfying their vanity. Would you care to join us?"

As he spoke, the two men who had been fighing moved back to where the others were gathered and their companions handed them their shirts. They slipped into them and began to button them up as they caught their breath.

“It does fit its setting,” Marissa replied, as she continued to admire the flowers and plants of the gardens. “This is a very beautiful place. I am pleased that we got the opportunity to come here.”

Gehenna, who was also taking in her surroundings, broke off from her study to look at Gwendolyn. “The plant life adds a certain charm to the place. The idea of being in a palace in the middle of what can only be described as a jungle is very surreal. It is like being in and out of civilisation at the same time. A very unique experience.” She looked along the path a little. “Shall we continue and see what other surprises the palace has to offer?”

* * * * *

“I would be honoured to join you, Your Majesty,” Elizabeth replied, although she felt more than a little annoyed that she had managed to put an end to everyone’s fun. She had certainly not expected that to happen.

“My brother always told me that fighting - be it wrestling or boxing - is not only good for spirit but aids in the maintenance of physique.” She glanced briefly at the two lords who were replacing their shirts to see if that was the case. Her attention did not linger and soon she was looking back at Owain.

Gwendolyn nodded a little as she looked around, blue eyes curious and alert. After a moment, she let her gaze rest on the thicker foliage just beyond the garden's edge. "You know, Your Majesties, the security perimeter does form a one mile radius..."

...

It very much appeared to be the case. Both men were sculpted like classical statues. Owain gestured first to the dark-haired man and then to redhead. "You might already have met Sir Evyn. The other gentleman is Sir Labhcás. Gentlemen, this is the lovely lady Elizabeth, Her Majesty's sister and thus mine."

The men rose and bowed politely to Elizabeth. Owain gestured for her to have a seat as he introduced the other men, including, most notably, Carolos, the Prince Consort of Hipolis.

“That will give us more to explore, but I do not think that we should traverse too far, as I am sure the others will be expecting us to join them some time,” Marissa replied, her gaze following Gwendolyn’s. “It would be for the best if we remained close to the building, just in case someone wishes to find us.”

Gehenna nodded her agreement. “Despite the travelling, I am more than willing to keep our tour short.” She turned to Gwendolyn. “Perhaps, as we walk, you can tell us a little about those who are here with us.”

* * * * *

Elizabeth bowed her head as the gentlemen were introduced to her, then settled into the seat offered by Owain. “Your Majesty, I must remark on the wonderful setting you have brought us to. It has been a while since I found myself in such a striking area, and the closeness to the sea is indeed an added bonus. It has been a while since I found myself near a beach. Mama has always preferred places where there is less sand.”

As she spoke, her eyes flicked about the men present, talking to all of them at once, while addressing the High King. “Of course, Is…Her Majesty and I enjoyed the opportunity of visiting Grandmama, the Dowager Empress – not to be mistaken for Malificent, the Empress Mother – who loved nothing better than being near the sea.”

"Well, the Queens of Hipolis and Finara are here and both quite eager to meet Your Majesties." Gwendolyn said. "Their position is rather interesting. While many Confederal Members are constitutional monarchies, Hipolis and Finara are the only monarchical Members not joined to the united throne held by the Head of the Commonwealth and headed by a sovereign with the protocolary rank of queen. This is the first time either of Their Majesties has traveled since the formation of the Confederated Peoples."

...

"Perhaps you could tell us a little more about the Dowager Empress and the Empress Mother?" Owain inquired curiously.
Gehenna Tartarus

“And I am most eager to meet them too,” Gehenna replied, genuinely interested. It was always fascinating learning how other nations worked, and to meet the people involved in the very centre was most appealing. “I have heard so much about the Commonwealth that it is a pleasure to experience it at first hand.”

Marissa, who had wandered a little ahead, stopped and turned. “The transition to the Commonwealth has been a very different experience. Having been brought up in the Empire and learning how different it is here, I find that meeting new people has been one of the most enjoyable parts of my life here.” She smiled at her two family members.

Returning her smile, Gehenna nodded. “I am sure that we will have ample opportunity to get to know all those present during our stay.” She looked back at Gwendolyn, having turned her attention to the High Queen. “Other than their majesties, who do we also have the privilege of meeting?”

* * * * *

Elizabeth looked a little surprised at Owain’s interest. She felt sure that the party she had interrupted had far better things to do than listen to her jabber on about her family. But he was the High King and she was his guest, and it really did not do to offend.

“Malificent, the Empress Mother, was the wife of the late Emperor Erebus and mother to Her Majesty, Empress Gehenna,” she began, unsure of the extent of Tartarian history her companions had. “She has practically retired from the public eye since my uncle’s death. She is, unlike the forbearers of her title, very unassuming.”

“Grandmama, on the other hand, is very…” she paused looking for the right words. “Imperial.” She looked at Owain with a smile. “You certainly cannot mistake Grandmama’s role in Tartarus, and should you ever do so, she would be sure to correct you.” Battleaxe and Old Dragon came to mind as she spoke, but she was not about to be disrespectful about her Grandmother, she was very fond of her, after all.

"The transition to the Confederated Peoples promises to be just as interesting and a good deal less complicated." Gwendolyn noted. "It is really nothing more than the logical conclusion of the Commonwealth project, after all. The Commonwealth never seemed to have much viability as a permanent form of government, although it would have been inappropriate to say so at the time."

She turned and started back towards the palace proper. "My nation has certainly seen a great deal of change in recent years. I only pray that it is all for the best. If you'd like, I suppose we could call on Queen Maeve? She is quite young and doubtless bored out of her mind."

"In any event, we will also be able to meet the Prince Consort of Hipolis and a host of other guests. My friend Lady Georgiana Daniel is here. I do hope Your Majesties will like her. She is quite the fashionable lady..." Gwendolyn continued.

...

Owain smiled at Elizabeth although he did not speak for the moment. Instead, Sir Evyn and Sir Labhcás knelt before her, their lowered faces not hiding their bright smiles. Owain simply watched this for now, seeming rather amused.

“I am watching the development of this nation with much interest,” Marissa announced as she closed the gap between her and her companions. “It has been very educational.”

Gehenna nodded her head in agreement. “Your Highness, despite the amount of change that the Confederated Peoples has undertaken recently, you should be proud in a nation that has managed to do so much without destroying itself. Change can sometimes do more harm than good, yet from what I have witnessed, the Confederated Peoples seem to be on a path that suits it and its people.”

As they continued back towards the palace, Marissa smiled at the change of topic. “It would be a pleasure to meet with Queen Maeve. I would feel very disturbed to think of one our party being bored so soon into the visit.” She turned to Gehenna. “Will you be joining us, Your Majesty?”

“I would be honoured to meet some of the other guests,” Gehenna replied, falling in alongside Gwendolyn as they walked.

* * * * *

The actions of the two gentlemen caught Elizabeth off guard. Whatever – if anything – she was expecting, it certainly had not been for two of the party to kneel down before her. She returned their smiles briefly and then looked at the High King, a frown etched lightly across her brow.

“I fear I have kept you all from your amusements, Your Majesty,” she finally managed to utter. She felt a little unsure of the situation, and unlike her sister, she was not very good at being the centre of attention.

Gwendolyn led the way through the halls again and lightly rapped on the door of another suite. "Come in." came a young woman's voice from inside.

Gwendolyn led the other women into the room, politely making courtesy to the young woman standing there. Queen Maeve was a short woman, a little plumper than the other three. She couldn't have been more than twenty. Her red hair was worn naturally and she wore an elegant green dress. She smiled warmly as she returned the courtesy. "Your Majesties, Your Most Esteemed Highness, I hope you're enjoying the trip so far?"

...

"Oh, not at all." Owain reassured Elizabeth. "I think that these two gentlemen actually find your presence rather inspiring. I think they would like to compete for some sort of favor, if that's alright with you, of course, m'lady?" The two men smiled a bit more although they didn't move.

The two Tartarian women greeted Queen Maeve, before Marissa answered. “Your Majesty, the trip has been most enjoyable, thus far. We have done little more than a brief stroll around the gardens.” She gave the queen a warm smile. “Her Royal Highness suggested that we come rescue you from your solitude. If you are willing, you are most welcome to join us. I feel some refreshments would be most acceptable.” She looked to her three companions.

Gehenna nodded. “Refreshments would be most welcome.”

“Oh,” Elizabeth finally replied, before breaking into a smile. “I have no objection, Your Majesty.” She turned to the two men kneeling before her, her eyes flicking between their faces. “I would be most honoured,” she finally replied.

"That sounds delightful." Maeve commented. "What do you think, Your Highness?"

"I think it sounds quire pleasant." Gwendolyn said. "But something light. We don't want to get full before dinner."

...

The men each lightly kissed Elizabeth's hand and stepped briefly aside. When they returned, each held a blade. They saluted and then began to fence, their strokes rapid and expert. When one scored a point, he lightly touched his blade to the other. Neither was hurt throughout the match, although they were using real blades and wore no protective gear. Sir Evyn eventually emerged the victor, returning to kneel before Elizabeth.

Having waited for all three of her companions to agree, Marissa led the way out of the room, deciding that it would be nice to sit in some downstairs parlour or outside, as it was so nice. She was sure that when they reached their goal, someone would miraculously appear who would be able to prepare some drinks for them.

“Your Majesties, your Royal Highness,” she began, as she turned to look at the newcomer to the group, then her other two companions. “I believe it would be nice if we took refreshment alfresco, as long as no one has any objections. It would be like a crime to not make the most of the glorious weather we have today.”

She continued to lead the three ladies down the corridor, remember the way from their original walk. She looked to Gwendolyn. “We should send word to the other guests and see if they too would like to join us. It would be remiss of us not to invite them.”

* * * * *

Elizabeth watched the fencing with baited breath, enjoying the atmosphere as the two men fought before her. Her eyes flicked briefly over the others in the group, but her attention was caught by the excellent demonstration of swordsmanship.

As the two finally wound up their fight, she watched Sir Evyn make his way back over to her and kneel once more. “My champion,” she announced with a smile, before frowning slightly in thought. “I fear that I am without a reward for you, Sir Evyn. I will have to make up for my lack of preparation at a later date.” She suddenly regretted not picking up anything before she went for her stroll.

Gwendolyn nodded to the words of the Empress and the High Queen and turned aside for a moment to find someone on the staff and pass on the requests of the guests. She rejoined the others a few minutes later, outside. "I asked for some fruit and some juice." she said with a small smile. "And I extended our invitation to Queen Hagne and the other ladies."

...

Sir Evyn grinned. "The smile of so radiant a lady is more than prize enough, Madam. It is like that first sliver of the dawn peeking above the distant horizon."

Marissa smiled at Gwendolyn, as she returned. “That is very kind of you.” She then addressed all three ladies. “As beautiful as I find the palace, the outdoors is, at present, a little more appealing.” She made herself comfortable in a chair, as the others took theirs.

“Your Highness, you spoke earlier about the house being divided between men and women for bathing purposes,” the Empress of Tartarus began. “Was it also customary for both parties to spend the day apart and meet at certain times of the day, like meals and during other entertainments, or was it normally more informal with just the separation for bathing?”

The High Queen turned to her sister-in-law, interested to learn more of the traditions of the palace they were staying in.

Elizabeth felt a blush tinge her cheek. She lowered her eyes and smiled, unable to meet the gaze of Sir Evyn. “You tease me, Sir.” Her smile grew into a grin, and she once more looked directly into the man’s eyes. “But if a smile will suffice for now, I will endeavour to reward you properly for your prowess with the sword and for becoming my champion.”

"Well, among the indigenous people of the islands, it used to be illegal for men and women to share meals. It was considered a great blasphemy to the spirits. Fortunately, however, we will not be so thoroughly replicating their customs." Gwendolyn answered.

...

"I am honored, lady." Evyn said with a winning smile of his own. He slowly kissed her hand and then rose to step back.

"Quite the gentleman, isn't he?" Owain inquired.

“I am not against traditions, although I am pleased that we shall not be sticking to all of them,” Gehenna replied, with a smile. “I do enjoy the conversation of a mixed table.”

Marissa nodded her head in agreement. “It must have been very strange back then, except they would have known no difference. It is only when you look from the outside that lifestyles appear so strange.”

“No one looks good when viewed under a microscope,” the Empress said, as she reclined slightly in her chair. “I am sure that there are a lot of aspects in the Empire that are not readily approved of by other nations. You must have noticed them since you have been living here, Your Majesty.”

The High Queen looked a little surprised. “At the moment, I am still in the middle of the transition. Some things that are done here seem strange to me, while there are some things back in the Empire that now appear that way too. It is all a matter of what you are used to.”

Gehenna momentarily thought of Balion and the differences they were trying to overcome. “Traditions are right to those who follow them, and appear, sometimes, wrong to those who witness them. Keeping an open mind is the key.”

* * * * *

Elizabeth kept her gaze on Sir Evyn as he moved away, then turned to the High King as he spoke. “He is, indeed, Your Majesty.” A smile crept across her lips. “I am honoured to have had two such fine gentlemen demonstrate their skill with a sword for me. It was a very pleasant experience and one that I will remember with fondness.”

She ran her finger lightly over her leg, straightening the material of her dress, as she once more found herself smiling at Sir Evyn. Her gaze quickly returned to the High King. “If you will excuse me, Your Majesty, I should continue with my stroll if I want to be finished before dinner.”

"There is some truth to what you say." Gwendolyn said. "But I don't think that it holds universally. Surely there are some things which are simply wrong?"

"I certainly think so." Maeve said. "I don't think, for example, the way Marlund was run before the Second Ambaran War could be considered good no matter how many people felt it was or no matter how used to it anyone was."

"I'd certainly agree with that." Gwendolyn said.

...

Owain nodded to Elizabeth. "Of course. I suppose we shall all see you at dinner then. Enjoy your stroll."
Gehenna Tartarus
29-04-2007, 12:29
“The question has to be, did those in power in Marlund think that they were doing wrong?” The Empress looked between Gwendolyn and Maeve as she spoke. “From an outside perspective the way Marlund was run was unacceptable, but to those enacting the treatment, they would see those same actions as perfectly reasonable.”

She paused for a moment, brushing some loose strands of hair behind her ear. “Certain nations sacrifice people to their gods, and some in very unpleasant ways. I would consider such actions in Tartarus as unethical. I do not have the right to say that they should stop what they are doing, because I believe it to be wrong. My opinion of what is and is not right can differ greatly from others, and that is where an open mind needs to come into the equation. I am certainly not saying all traditions are reasonable.”

Elizabeth bopped a curtsey to Owain, then moved away from the group, suddenly wishing that she had stayed for a little longer. But as much as she would have liked to have remained among the fun, she really did need to continue. Her mother would have fainted had she seen her, and would probably have called her a harlot. Tartarian society could be a little stifled sometimes.

She listened to the sound of the group as she went on her way, deciding to return the way she had come. As she walked, she recalled how much fun she had had, especially the duel. She giggled to herself as she made her way back around the building.

"Meaning no offense, Your Majesty, but I am not prepared to grant that that has to be or even should be the question." Gwendolyn said. "It was simply wrong, independently of what I or what they or what any other person might have thought about it as surely as the Earth has always orbited the Sun, even though for endless centuries most believed it was the other way around."

"I agree with the Grand Duchess." Maeve said. "And I would say the same about those nations which practice human sacrifice, although I don't believe that the use of force is the answer in such situations. I think there's a middle way between an irrational zealotry which seeks to force its views on the world and an equally irrational relativism which refuses to pass any sort of judgments."

"I don't think she means to include your statement in the latter category." Gwendolyn added, a little worried that Maeve might have accidentally offended their guest. "We are simply saying that, while keeping an open-mind is important, a more evaluative approach also has a place and that the question is a complex one with many sides to it."

"Right." Maeve agreed, also a bit worried that she might have been too heated a moment earlier.

Around then, a woman in her early sixties with dark curls and an increasingly plump figure approached, smiling as she made courtesy. "Good evening, Your Majesties, Your Highness."

After she and Maeve returned the courtesy, Gwendolyn turned to the High Queen and to their guest. "This is Queen Hagne of Hipolis." The grand duchess's voice seemed a little relieved that the conversation, which she had worried might be on its way towards becoming an argument, had been interrupted by the arrival of a new participant.
Gehenna Tartarus

Both Gehenna and Marissa greeted the arrival of Queen Hagne with a smile.

“It is a pleasure to meet you, Your Majesty,” Gehenna said, hiding the slight annoyance that she was feeling. Despite the dip in her mood, the Empress managed to remain looking completely at ease.

Marissa indicated one of the chairs. “Please make yourself comfortable. Gwendolyn has arranged some soft drinks to cool us down a little.” She smiled, as she settled back down in her chair. “We thought it would be nice to sit out and enjoy the day for a while. It is so nice being able to make the most of the sun.”

Gehenna, not one to normally back down from a discussion, decided that there was no point in continuing the subject that had arisen before the arrival of Queen Hagne. She would just put it down to the fact that everyone had a way of looking at things, and it was sometimes prudent to let difference remain, rather than destroy the rest of her visit.

* * * * *

Elizabeth continued on with her journey, taking in the rest of the garden. She heard the other ladies as she went on with her stroll, but decided to walk on alone, before dinner. Finally, when it was late enough, she would return to her room to dress.

Gwendolyn and Maeve let the matter drop as well. They were a tad bothered by the exchange but Gehenna was an honored guest and the High Queen's cousin so the matter was not pursued. After she took her seat, Hagne took a moment to look at the other ladies. There seemed to be some tension but, not having been there, she had no idea what its source might be. She put it out of mind fairly quickly. She did not subscribe to the new school of thought that problems should always be brought out into the open but rather that, at least when the matter was small, it should be quickly brushed aside.

Hagne smiled slightly. "I had actually hoped that my daughter might join us on this trip but she's been too busy with her work in the Order of the Falcon."

"I've heard a fair amount about that." Gwendolyn said. "It all sounds so..."

"Outlandish?" Hagne asked. "I couldn't agree more. Unfortunately, however outlandish they might seem, threats of the kind the Order deals with are all too real and pose quite a danger."

“You must be very proud of your daughter,” the High Queen stated, as she looked at Hagne. “I do not know much about the Order of the Falcon, but anyone who puts themselves out there to protect and help others should be recognised for their endeavour. I would have been honoured if she could have spent some time with us, maybe another time.”

She was looking forward to a time when she and Owain had children, though she would have to admit that she did not think that she would be very happy with them doing something that could be considered dangerous. Of course, there was always the likelihood that they could join the military. Still, there was a while to go before she would have to worry about that.

"I am sure that you will be able to spend more time with her, Your Majesty. I am, in fact, surprised that the she has been about so little but things have been rather hectic. I was hoping, however, that she would also have been able to meet our guest. We are all extremely honored to play host to the Empress of Tartarus." Hagne answered, moving her gaze from Marissa to Gehenna.

"Extremely." Gwendolyn said. "We might not agree on everything, Your Majesty but you're more than a visiting international leader. Ever since Her Majesty married my brother, we also consider you family and you can always count on being welcomed as such."

It was around that moment that a young woman made her appearance, quietly serving refreshments of various kinds. There were a variety of fruits and juices, many of them fairly exotic, native to this area. Hagne smiled as she took a large tropical fruit for herself. "The strange thing is that all of this is quite healthful," she commented.

“When you next speak to her, I would be grateful if you could send my greetings,” Marissa said, settling down a little now that the conversation had moved to a less tense level. “Please extend my hope that she will be able to join us next time.” She felt a smile, grow on her lips as she listened to the others.

Gehenna flicked her gaze between both Queen Hagne and Gwendolyn. “I would have liked to have met your daughter,” she announced, as her attention settled on the older woman. “Like my cousin, my knowledge of the Order of the Falcon is limited, but from listening to your all, I can see that she is doing her part for the larger good.”

Despite her earlier frustration, Gehenna felt herself relax, which made her smile warmly. “It is a pleasure and an honour to be here. Since my cousin married His Majesty, I have come to think of you as family,” she looked at Gwendolyn as she spoke, before once more taking all those around her with her gaze. “And I extend a warm welcome to any of you who decide to grace the Empire with your presence.”

Marissa turned to Gehenna and nodded, unable to respond before the drinks arrived. “These look very appetising,” she stated, as she ran her gaze over the drinks, each one fitting in perfectly with the setting. “I think I would still be tempted even if they were not healthful.”

Gwendolyn smiled as she ate a plantain. "We shall simply have to be careful not to spoil our appetites for dinner. I understand that we are having a traditional paina feast this evening."

"You know," Hagne began "that in the 18th century, when men and women ate separately in this land, women wouldn't have been allowed to enjoy a lot of the foods we'll be having tonight, such as any sort of port and most kinds of bananas."

"Seriously?" Maeve said.

"Seriously." Gwendolyn said. "These restrictions were known as kapu and, in most cases, violations were punishable by immediate execution. I'm afraid I don't know all that much of the concept but it was definitive for the local concept of the sacred, even after most of them converted to Christianity of some form or another."

Maeve smirked slightly. "If the Grand Duchess had had her way, the event would be done in the 19th century style, a mixed gender event including pork and bananas but excluding alcohol. Fortunately, the High King has chosen to include wine and liquor."

Marissa helped herself to a glass of juice, and took a slow sip, savouring the tang that burst over her tongue. She lowered the glass, cupping it in her hands. “As much as I dislike seeing disagreements between family members, I am pleased that you lost, Gwendolyn.” She turned fondly towards her sister-in-law. “A glass of wine is very pleasant at dinner.”

“The idea of being executed for eating a specific food is very unusual,” the Empress of Tartarus remarked, as she sat back, having just retrieved a drink of her own. “Was the food considered sacred to men only?” Tartarus had some strange male dominated traditions, but she could not recall any that restricted women from eating. Of course, she could not rule out the possibility of it happening in the past.

Marissa laughed lightly, as she had a thought. “I cannot imagine Father being able to handle Mama if he tried to refuse her a glass of port. Not that she drinks often, but she is very fond of a glass.”

Turning to her cousin, Gehenna nodded in agreement. “I honestly cannot imagine your Father being able to refuse Aunt Lavinia anything.”

Both women looked back at the others around the table, as they settled back into their chair, letting the others get a word in.

Hagne laughed slightly. "It seems that those in favor of alcoholic beverages are in the majority then. I also am rather fond of spirits, in moderation, of course."

“Everything should be taken in moderation,” the High Queen replied before taking a slow sip of her drink. She could feel the citrus flavours burst into her mouth, bringing with it the taste of exotic places. “This is delicious. I must remember to get some shipped home.”

Gehenna nodded her head, her own glass placed back on the table. “Wine does tend to add a little something to certain meals.” She looked over at Gwendolyn. “Do you not take alcohol, or is it more with sticking to the tradition of the place? Sometimes it is nice to experience the ways of a place. Ways that may have long since vanished.”

“I am not sure I like the tradition of having His Majesty in the other wing of the house.” Marissa lowered her drink, and lent forward to place the glass back on the table. “I will have no one to wake up in the middle of the night if I have a bad dream.” She laughed lightly, at the thought.

"I don't drink alcohol at all, Your Majesty." Gwendolyn answered.

"I suppose that leaves all the more for us." Maeve said with a broad smile. "I am certain that His Majesty has procured the finest wines for the occasion."

Hagne tilted her head in faint concern at the High Queen. "Have you been sleeping poorly, Your Majesty?"

“Not drinking alcohol is very noble,” Gehenna remarked sincerely. “Other than an occasional glass at dinner or on special occasions, I generally refrain. I believe that a clear head in my position is the best policy. I would be more than a little dismayed if I made a decision that escalated out of control due to a poorly functioning thought process.” She looked at the other around the table. “I do appreciate a good wine, all the same, and will be pleased to try a little of the High King’s selection.”

As Gehenna spoke to Gwendolyn and Maeve, Marissa turned to Queen Hagne, and smiled. “Oh, no, Your Majesty, at least no more poorly than anyone else. I just find that I do not sleep as well when His Majesty is away.” Of course, this seemed to contradict her earlier statement, but she was not about to discuss her comment in greater detail.

"I understand completely." Gwendolyn said, smiling a bit knowingly. "It is the same way with His Highness. He has been in Excalbia by himself of late and it is driving me quite mad."

"I can imagine." Hagne said. She looked as though she was about to say something else but she didn't, letting the conversation stall briefly. Finally, she looked at Marissa and began an entirely different subject. "Your Majesty, with all the recent changes, you are queen, high queen, empress or grand duchess or more than half of the 129 Confederal Members. In terms of population and geography, it is no larger a domain that before but it now consists of so many more distinct polities. That must be very exciting. How many of them have you had a chance to visit so far?"

Marissa smiled at Gwendolyn then, focused her attention on Queen Hagne, who seemed to pause before beginning. “Unfortunately, I have seen nowhere near as much as I would like to. I am hoping that Owain has need to visit some and I was thinking that it would not hurt too greatly if I visited some of the others on my own.” She paused a moment giving the idea some thought. “It is probably time for me to step out a little on my own, even if it is nice to have someone there to be able to explain everything to me.”

The rest of the afternoon was passed in small talk and it was soon time for the paina. The royal and imperial ladies met the Head of the Commonwealth shortly before heading down to the beach where the event was to be held. Owain briefly embraced his wife but, as protocol dictated, he escorted his guest to the event. Marissa was escorted by the Hipolitan Prince Consort.

The guests had already arrived and they stopped their activities to rise and then bow to the High King and the Empress as the band played the Tartaran national anthem. Only when the music finished did Owain raise his hand to signal the other guests that they were free to return to their own revels. The band returned to playing festive local music as the royal and imperial party took a moment to look around. The men were all in dress appropriate for court with the exception of the entertainers, the serving staff and one or two of the more local guests who were in traditional native garb. The women, on the other hand, blended the styles of the court and the island more freely. Only a few were clearly dressed in one style or the other and most had gowns especially made to incorporate the most charming elements of both styles. Dancing was taking place on the sand. A large pig roasted over an open fire. Other food was presented on a table off to one side and there were other tables where guests could sit. Some of the staff was delivering the food to the seated guests while others carried around smaller samples of the local cuisine to offer to passing guests.

Owain found himself standing with Marissa, Gwendolyn and Gehenna. He smiled to all three of the ladies as he began gravitating towards a table. "I have yet to sample much of the local cuisine but I hear that it's quite delicious. Perhaps we should begin with small samples of everything...?"

The High Queen, having enjoyed her afternoon taking to the other ladies present, watched the festivities happening around them. The music added to the atmosphere and her gaze focused briefly on the people already dancing. A smile appeared on her lips and her eyes shone with merriment. She was looking forward to taking part in some dancing later on, but at the moment the thought of food was very tempting, and she was pleased that Owain had spoken of doing so.

“It smells delicious,” she commented, breathing in the aroma. “I agree that a little of everything sounds very appealing.” She looked at the selections being carried past and let her eyes drift towards one of the tables, where the food was being served. “I am not sure I could narrow down my choice to just one.”

Gehenna, who was walking with the group, nodded her head in agreement. “It does look very appetising. I believe I will follow your example and try a little of all.” She turned to Gwendolyn waiting for her decision on the matter.

* * * * *

Lady Elizabeth looked over at her sister and cousin, and decided not to join them. She sat herself on a chair and watched the dancing, hoping that she would eventually be able to join in the festivities. At the moment, she was happy to just sit and take in the atmosphere.

She slipped off her shoes and wriggled her toes in the sand, enjoying the feel as the grains slipped over her skin. She smiled to herself, pleased that Marissa had invited her along. The afternoon had been very pleasant and she was hoping that the evening would be even more entertaining.

"That sounds lovely." Gwendolyn said as she joined the others on the trip over to the food.

Owain looked to the waiter standing near the table. "A little of everything and perhaps you might tell us what each item is?"

"Of course, Your Majesty." the man said with a brief bow. He went to the first bowl which was filled with some sort of mashed root. "This is poi. It is considered the staple food in much of the Pacific. Traditionally, islanders believed that once a bowl was uncovered, their ancestral spirit was present at the table. It was a food considered sacred not because it is rare or reserved for certain people but precisely because it is common, the lifeblood of the people."

Owain gestured to Gehenna. "It is only polite to let a guest go first, if you are interested in sampling it, Your Majesty."

Meanwhile, Sir Evyn made his way up to Elizabeth and bowed deeply. "Now this is certainly strange. It is rare that the most beautiful woman at a party be sitting by herself."

“As the saying goes ‘you only live once’,” Gehenna replied with a smile and then indicated for the waiter to serve her some of the poi. Before eating the food, she waited politely for the others to be served before picking up her fork. She lifted the food to her mouth and chewed thoughtfully, savouring the flavour. “This is very good,” she stated as she finally followed the morsel she had popped into her mouth.

Marissa, who followed suit, nodded in agreement. “It is very pleasant. I am not sure whether it reminds me of anything or not.” She lowered her fork and smiled at the others around the table. “Of course, it could just be the texture.”

Elizabeth broke her gaze away from the dancers, and looked up at the man standing before her. “Sir Evyn, you are too kind.” She indicated around her. “I thought I would take a moment to watch before joining the others.” Her brow furrowed slightly in question. “I am surprised not to see you dancing. If you dance as well as you fence, your talents will be greatly missed.”

Owain nodded as well as he too took a bite. "So what exactly is it?" he asked the server.

"Your Majesty, it is made from the corm of the kalo plant, known more generally as the taro plant in international circles. The corm is boiled and then mashed and water is added." the man said.

"It is interesting that their staple should have been considered sacred. It's very different from the view of bread or rice or potatoes are viewed in those areas where they form the staple crop." Gwendolyn commented as she took a sample as well. "Not that I'm any sort of expert."

"I don't think that has always been the case, sister." Owain said. "It is a natural result of abundance that food is more commonly taken for granted. What else do we have here?"

"Poke." the man said, offering them servings each a one-inch cube of raw yellowfish tuna seasoned with crushed roasted kukui nut, sea salt, scallions and seaweed. Owain again allowed his guest to try it first.

Evyn smiled brightly at Elizabeth's observation. "M'lady, it is actually that very matter which I wished to discuss with you."

Gehenna looked at the fish as it was placed before her, and as last time, she waited for everyone to be served before taking a bite. “The menu appears varied.” She lifted the fork once more to her lips and sampled the food. Chewing slowly, she pondered the taste and nodded, as she lowered her cutlery. “That is wonderful. I am fond of fish, and the flavouring is delightful.”

“I believe I prefer that to the poi,” Marissa added as she too finished tasting the tuna. “Together they make a very interesting dish. Not something we get to eat everyday.” She looked over at Gwendolyn. “Are these the dishes that would have resulted in women being executed?”

Also interested in the answer, the Empress of Tartarus turned her attention to Owain’s sister. “It seems strange that such basic foods, that appear as standard as bread should have such a penalty attached for eating it. If it were some meat or other, I could perhaps understand.”

* * * * *

“If you are about to ask me to dance, Sir Evyn,” Elizabeth answered with a smile in her voice, “I would be most honoured to.” She rose from the chair and stood before the gentleman. “Of course, if I have jumped entirely to the wrong conclusion, I will wander over to the food and pretend that that was my sole purpose for getting to my feet.”

"Oh, no." Gwendolyn said. "Pork and bananas were the dishes that were punishable by death."

"In theory." the waiter said. "However, Your Highness should be aware that there is no record of such a sentence ever actually being carried out in practice. Would Your Majesties and Your Highness like to sample something which would have been scandalous several centuries before?"

Gwendolyn smiled mischievously. "I think that's a wonderful idea. What is next?"

"This is called laulau." the man said as he served them salted butterfish and pork wrapped in banana leaves. "They're normally large enough for a lunch but we've made a smaller version for those just looking for a sample."

"I did indeed intend to ask you to dance." Sir Evyn said. "I must admit that I find you a most fascinating lady." He offered her an arm and escorted her to the "dance floor" or, rather, the open area of sand.

As the pork in banana leaves were placed before them, Marissa looked at the plates and frowned slightly. She looked at the other around the table. “It seems a little strange to think that in the past we would have been punished for eating something so harmless,” she stated as she cut a piece of the food and raised it to her lips.

Gehenna, who nodded as she tasted her own, finally spoke as she cleared her mouth of food, once more lowering her fork to the table. “I must say that if you are going to die for a dish of food that is a delicious one to die for. I am pleased that the tradition has since stopped, as I would have been most aggrieved not to have been able to try it for myself.”

“It is very delicious,” Marissa continued, as she finished her own sample. “We really must have this one again, Your Majesty.” She looked at Owain with a smile, before taking another forkful.

Fascinating, Elizabeth thought as she was led to the dance floor by Sir Evyn. She felt very complimented by the description. Knowing the people they were with during this visit, to be called fascinating had made her smile.

As they reached the part of the sand where they would dance, Elizabeth gave the other dancers a quick glance, smiling to them as she did. “I hope they are not suddenly going to start doing a dance that I do not know,” she said as she turned her attention to Sir Evyn. “Other than the traditional ones, I am not very well versed in many others.” Her smiled brightened. “If I stand on your toes, I do hope you will forgive me.”

"It certainly does." Gwendolyn admitted. "But, I suppose that when one thinks of laws prescribing such a severe penalty for such common actions, one must also remember that the very fact of the tradition made the act seem uncommon and scandalous."

"Perhaps in a thousand years people will have the same sort of conversation about our laws." Owain said in a joking tone, even though he knew there might well be some truth to it. In fact, there probably was.

The next dish to be served to them was lomilomi salmon. It was raw salmon, mashed and with onions and seasoning.

Evyn smiled at Elizabeth as he took her in his arms and began to dance. "It's quite alright. I don't think anyone actually knows any of the local dances. I'm sure we won't stand out."

“Most traditions do not take a thousand years to become conversational pieces,” Gehenna remarked as she waited for the next tasty morsel to be placed in front of her. She was grateful that they had settled on small portions of everything, rather than one large meal, as she was enjoying trying all the different tastes. “Unfortunately, I believe we exhausted the subject of traditions earlier this afternoon.”

Marissa nodded, recalling the situation earlier in the garden, and deciding they did not want to go done that path again. “Salmon is one of my favourites. I am looking forward to trying this one.” She smiled at the server as he placed a portion of the food in front of her. “If this one tastes as good as it looks, we really must get the recipe sent home.” A slight murmur slipped out as she took a bit. Once her mouth was clear, she continued. “Mmm, that is my favourite so far.”

The Empress of Tartarus smiled, as she once more lowered her fork from her mouth and swallowed. “I have to say that the pork and banana leaves has been my personal favourite so far, I must have dangerous tastes.” She smiled, as she looked at Owain and then Gwendolyn. “Do you have a favourite so far, Your Majesty? Your Highness?”

* * * * *

“I do not mind standing out, as long as I am having fun,” Elizabeth said, as she began to settle into the dance. She looked up into Evyn’s eyes, as she moved with him through the steps. “Of course, I would not go out of my way to be foolish, but I believe that a person should not stop doing something because of the risk, as long as they are enjoying themselves. And I love dancing. Do you like dancing, Sir Evyn?”

She paused talking to let her partner answer, and just relaxed into the movements. She was a good dancer, like most of the Imperial Family, she had been given the best tutors. She had never been as outgoing as her older sister, but despite that she had managed to excel in the more social sides of society, even if she never promoted herself as much as Marissa.

"That is a rather large topic to have already exhausted completely." Owain commented although a glance at his wife led him not to pursue the matter. "In any event, the food is delicious. I, for one, am glad that everyone is free to enjoy it now." He considered her question. "I enjoyed the poke."

"I am with the Empress and the High Queen. I liked this last dish best." Gwendolyn said.

"Would you ladies like some more?" Owain inquired. "I, for one, think I might wish to rest my palate until the pig is done."

"I like dancing with you." Sir Evyn said with his most dashing smile. "You are a most interesting lady. So tell me more about Tartarus? How are things managed from day-to-day? All most Confederals know of Tartaran governance is the role of the Empress."

“I think, like you Owain, I am going to save some room for the pig,” Marissa smiled, as she looked down at her plate, and pushed it slightly away from her. “It would be a shame to miss out on anything, considering the amount of effort that has been put in to today. It looks like it is going to be a very enjoyable evening. I hope that everyone is going to dance later.”

Gehenna looked over at the food and nodded her head in agreement. “I believe that I too will wait for the pig. It does look very appetising and it would be, as Issi has said, a shame not to give it a tasting.”

“And the dancing?” Marissa inquired of her cousin. “I am hoping to tempt someone into dancing with me before the evening is over. If I am unsuccessful, I will just have to dance with His Majesty.” She looked at Owain and laughed lightly, her eyes revealing her desire to actually have the opportunity later in the evening.

“Tell you about Tartarus,” Elizabeth repeated, as she gave the question some thought. “I am surprised that Issi, I mean, Her Majesty has not talk endlessly of home to you all.”

The High Queen’s sister continued to dance, keeping step perfectly. “The day to day management of Tartarus is very much like the running of the Confederated Peoples. The only real difference is the person at the top of the ladder and the way the governing people acquire their roles. They do not get voted into positions by the general public.”

"That would be a shame, wouldn't it?" Gwendolyn said conspiratorily to Marissa in a fake whisper. "His Majesty is a terrible dancer."

...

Sir Evyn wasn't sure things were as similar as Elizabeth said but it wasn't really the subject matter that interested him anyway. He smiled at her more brightly as he spun her and caught her again in his powerful arms. "And what Tartarans do to amuse themselves?"

Marissa looked over at her husband as Gwendolyn spoke quietly to her before turning back to her sister-in-law with a smile. “His Majesty is a fine dancer, I believe you wrong him most terribly,” she joked lightly, as she turned her head towards the dancers. “It looks like people are having fun tonight.”

Following her cousin’s gaze, Gehenna nodded her head in agreement. “The dancing seems to have made everyone happy,” she observed, noting the smiling and laughing faces of those taking part. “Even Elizabeth has succumbed to the opportunity.”

The High Queen flicked her gaze over the dancer, finally finding the lady in question. “Yes, she has managed to procure an excellent dancer. Sir Evyn dances very well.” She watched the couple for a moment. “As does Elizabeth. And to think, she always told me she disliked dancing.”

“I suppose the partner makes the dance,” the Empress of Tartarus remarked, before looking back at her cousin. “From my observation, I would not assume that Elizabeth was having a miserable time.”

Marissa nodded in agreement.

As she finished her swing and found herself once more in Sir Evyn’s arms, Elizabeth let out a small laugh of enjoyment. “Tartarians do much the same as other people, Sir Evyn. We dance and sing. We enjoy movies, the theatre, the opera, the ballet. We go to concerts, we read books and the more adventurous among us risk their lives doing dangerous sport, like mountain climbing and parachuting.” She smiled charmingly at her companion. “I admit to not having done anything more thrilling than taking part in an advanced driving course.”

She paused a moment in her speech, allowing herself to once more focus on the dance before continuing. “We really are just ordinary people, who do all the same things that others do.” She looked at Sir Evyn questioningly. “What do you do to amuse yourself?”
