Dewards the heart of the Galaxy there was a planet, roughly the size of earth, with a similar atmosphere, although lacking the oceans. It had evolved plants very similar to earth grasses and was covered in vast plains. Animals ate the grass, other animals ate them. About 300 years before a Terran science facility working on robotics had set up on the surface. It was pretty unremarkable and low key...
Right up until the point where nuclear bombs started going off on it. Then it was suddenly very bright and potentially interesting.
Through the wormhole...
General Pak Lee, Deep Space Opperations stood on a small hillock. The area around the gate was clear and unaffected, they'd cleaned out the robotic creatures, building by building, and DSO had lost ten men for each one of the damned creations. He swung his binoculars to the North, while he couldn't see it, the land in that direction was contaminated. The bomb had cleaned out the enemy though.
"Sir." a soldier was toiling up the slope, lugging an XC-21 Laser Cannon on his shoulder.
The cannon wasn't the heavy bit, it was the monstrous capacitor that fueled it. One shot, but one shot that could knock out just about anything. Two more soldiers were following the first, each carrying one of the huge ammunition pods.
"Dig it in up here." Lee let the binoculars drop down around his neck, "I presume you have the rest of your Platoon heading up here soon?"
The soldier nodded, "Following behind, Sir."
The uniform was interesting, the helmet would have looked like a fairly standard 21st century design, but with a visor with a HUD display, the power pack for which was held in a ridge across the brow. It also had cheek guards that fell down the sides and another guard that entended outwards from the back, giving it the vague appearance of a Roman Gallic-G. The armour was flexotropic, although not visible under the poncho. The poncho and helmet were active camouflage, although right now this had been switched off and they had faded to a dull khaki green colour.
He set down the weapon and offered a salute to the General, who responded half-heartedly, "Any news on the new weapons?"
While the missiles had cleaned out the largest robotic infestations, there were smaller bases, and the Union wanted the planet more or less intact. Lee remembered the viscious fighting at the Gate Base. The enemy had known there was a chance the Dyellians would use the Gate to strike at them, but hadn't expected them to have the technology to defeat the strange conical robot guardians. They had. It had been viscious... Soldiers dying, their flesh melted by energy weapons, the SSA2801 assault rifle useless... the XC-21 wasn't though... There were only 5 For the Regiment that had led the assault. Over 100 dead and as many wounded. They had destroyed 20 of the machines.
Since then they had moved in more of the precious cannons, "Dig in quickly." he ordered, "Night is coming. Recon indicates we may be looking at an attack."
Only this time they would be ready.
