Long ago there was an ancient king named Sovress, and he reigned fairly over his people for decades. The people adored him and, because of his long life, he began to believe he was invincible. But, like all mortals, his time was getting nearer every day. Suddenly, he was struck ill by a deadly disease that was plaguing the nation of which he was king. He called all of the most practiced and learned physicians, but they all came to the same conclusion. Noting the physicians' diagnosis as blasphemy and dismissing them from service, the old king refused the medications that could expand his life, if only for a week or so, as well as the be rest he was supposed to receive. In late Spring, the king died and his body burned as in all kings' ceremonies. But, his story does not end at death, for his spirit refused to be sent to Heaven or Hell.
Instead, it floated in a void and as others died, their spirits followed suit, until the Higher Being created the Shadow Realm. This realm was and is responsible for housing all spirits that refuse their proper destination. It also serves as a check point for all spirits that are supposed to go to Heaven or Hell. But Sovress was not happy in just dwelling in the Shadow Realm. He caused rucous and mayhem, setting spirits against each other and ultimately waged a war in the Shadow Realm. Meanwhile, the unrest caused the human world to go into conflict, from the Great Flood to wiping out the entire population of large reptiles on the Earth and even causing all of the water to freeze. To keep him quiet, the Higher Being gave Sovress the position of King of the Shadow Realm. Once on the throne he slowly began to fall into darkness, eventually becoming who he is today; the greatly feared Shadow King.
With his new power of darkness and shadow, he made his own creatures, often hideous and evil. He also discovered the power to reincarnate powerful spirits and place them in the bodies of humans. He despises humans for their life and pities them for their mortality. Longing to destroy them, yet unable to deal with the thought of ending a precious life, he chose to leave his bidding to the Dark Lord Breehain. But his plan is now slightly detered from his original notion in that, he no longer wishes to destroy the human race, but merge the Shadow Realm and the human world together, giving himself a chance to rule them as he once had when he was alive.
But by merging the two worlds, he has set the equilibrium that is kept in check by the seperation of Shadow and living out of balance. Many regions of the human world are covered in the shadowy darkness and the evil creatures haunt and torture innocent towns and villages. Lord Breehain has not been able to completely overcome the living world with darkness becasue of a few brave living beings. They come from all races, and have come together on a shaky treaty to end their own fueds to banish the darkness from heir Earth. But the shadow creatures are pwerful and pose a strong defense against the living. They must find a way to stop the creatures from imposing any more darkness on the Earth and remove what darkness is already there.
