Her Royal Highness Princess Serena wishes to return to university

Her Royal Highness Princess Serena (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Serena_Eu) of San Adriano has publicly expressed her intention to return to university, 27 years after having obtained a degree in literature from the University of Katoren in Uhuh-Topia.

Her Highness had then ceased her studies in order to remain close to her father, Prince Ashio, who had been taken ill and died a few months later. At that point, Her Royal Highness become the Sovereign Village's ruling monarch, and lacked the time to pursue formal post-graduate studies.

Now, the Princess wishes to complete her university education. She has told us, in an exclusive interview, that she is not yet certain whether to begin post-graduate research in the field of literature, or whether to begin her studies again in an entirely new field.

"A monarch should have a full, complete and advanced education," Her Highness told us. She added that she will, of course, remain in San Adriano as much as possible.

Since San Adriano lacks a university, Her Highness is considering possibilities for studying abroad.

The Princess' children, Crown Prince Mauro (aged 19) and Princess Petra (aged 16) are currently studying in neighbouring Uhuh-Topia, their father's country of origin.

(OOC: If you're interested in having Princess Serena study in a university in your country, simply post and provide a few details (on the country, the university, what types of courses it provides...).)

The Republic has many fine universities that would be more than honoured with the presence of Her Royal Highness.

McMillan University in Iron Rapids is one of the globe's leaders in industrial sciences. The campus has a stong focus on Metallurgical Science and Geology buy has a fairly well versed Arts program. Taking up the whole of Merced Island, McMillan is the backbone of industrial research in Ironwell.

The University of Solara maintains a high level of excellence in their Fine Arts campus. Many of our nation's most respected artists, designers and writers were formed in the U of S's hallowed halls. Nestled in the heart of the Old Town fashion district it's the one true destination for the budding artis in everyone.

The capital of Republica is the proud home of our oldest institution, Imperial College. Founded before the Republic and even the Empire that preceded it Imperial College is Ironwell is our nation's most prestigious university. Located on the banks of the Vulcan River its sprawling campus is on the forefront of philosophy, literature and science.

Her Highness may be interested in studying philosophy at Imperial College. She is self-taught to some extent in this field, but has no prior former education in philosophy. Are there specific requirements for enrolling as a first year student in philosophy - particularly if one is a foreign student?

The following letter was addressed to the office of Princess Serena, with copies to the Parliament of San Adriano and Ambassador Lorenzo Shau; absent diplomatic relations between Gruenberg and San Adriano, these seemed to be the most obvious points of contact, but I would assume in such a small community the letter could be given to the appropriate person if none of the above hit the nail anyway.

I am writing regarding a matter brought to my attention by our Pro-Provost for Royal Affairs, namely that the Princess Serena Eu is considering seeking further education, and has decided to look abroad for the opportunity. I feel obliged to commend the possibility of my own institution, the University of Merlefurt, and I should hope it not be considered too forward to briefly make the case for such.

The University of Merlefurt is the oldest and most prestigious university in Gruenberg, and generally ranked well internationally in research and teaching assessments. We are well aware that Gruenberg does not enjoy an outstanding international reputation for academic progress or freedom, but consider ourselves quite exceptional in this regard. We employ top-rated academics from Gruenberg and abroad, and have extensive and modern facilities.

We are uniquely tailored to serve the needs of those of royal descent, given our long tradition of schooling Gruenberger royalty and aristocracy, and an array of foreign dignitaries. Indeed, our very own Sultan, Gardab Woltzten IX, entered a course of study of considerable similiarity to the one proposed by Princess Serena, researching 18th century poetry. Sadly, the demands of his position forced him into very occasional study, and he eventually deregistered.

Merlefurt itself is a beautiful coastal city, of considerably more cosmopolitan persuasion than inland Gruenberg, and it boasts numerous libraries and literary resources. It has produced several of Gruenberg's most notable authors, poets, dramatists and musicians.

The chief constraints, which I feel I must convey, would be those of language. If Princess Serena speaks English, daily life, tutorials and academic reading would not prove problematic; alternate arrangements would have to be made for other languages, although Rukialkotta is an easy language to learn and the University has a well-regarded School of Languages that runs intensive training courses for foreign students arriving with no knowledge of the language. Naturally, though, a literary course would require considerably more linguistic proficiency, particularly if researching literature not in Rukialkotta, such as that preceding its construction or tribal languages (for example, we have a new field office in the Gelzien Nub devoted to study of the indigenous nnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnGut tribe); in such an instance, it would probably be necessary to spend an initial year at the School of Languages, and only then engage in research.

Naturally, I shall be happy to answer any questions, and would appreciate any information Princess Serena and her staff could provide such that we might make preparations. I can also arrange for former students to submit testamonials of their experience, should they be required, and even to organize a preliminary tour if Princess Serena or her staff would like a look at the university and city beforehand.

Yours in hope and blood,
Achtan Merrahanvit
Provost of the University of Merlefurt
Haraki

(Note: Not an official response, just information she would find out very quickly if she looked at any information source about any of the universities in question.)

Haraki is filled with universities. With a large population of nearly five billion people and fast-growing industries in many high-tech and highly-educationally-demanding industries, over 60% of Haraki's secondary school students have moved on to university, making it the primary - and over twice as large as the secondary - destination for students after high school. This has, of course, required the opening of some new universities, most of these large and styled to accomodate hundreds of thousands of students. Because of the increasing amount of slightly lower-brow education now available in these massive universities, those that have existed for a long time are now becoming increasingly difficult to get acceptance to, as they have existed since their enrollment was much smaller and have not grown at the exponential rate of growth of these newer universities.

Probably Haraki's three foremost universities are the University of Kiros, University of Atherlon, and James McBryde University. The first, Kiros University, is located in the city of Kiros and takes up a significant part of the city, located just outside downtown. With regular enrollment of approximately 40,000 students per year, it includes a host of undergraduate students and a smaller section of graduate students. Although it offers classes on nearly every available subject, the university has always prided itself on its sciences, and is the number one university in Haraki for most theoretical or physical sciences, such as in the fields of quantum mechanics or nuclear engineering. More generalized courses are of course available, and Kiros U remains the most prestigious university in Haraki for most sciences, ranging from the more generalized undergraduate degrees to the specialized theoretical post-graduate degrees, to the degrees that have led people into te high-tech industries.

Haraki's oldest university is the University of Atherlon, located in the heart of Haraki's capital city of Atherlon. Established over four hundred years ago, while Haraki was still a colony of a different nation, it is the oldest and one of the best universities in the nation. Now much larger than originally, it has approximately 34,000 students enrolled at any one time. It, as with most Harakian universities, offers courses in nearly every subject available. However, its specialties are in the social sciences. It is renowned throughout the nation for offering the best courses in nearly every social science available, such as political science, philosophy, or anthropology, along with many others.

Haraki's final of 'the big three', and possibly most prestigious of any university in Haraki, is James McBryde University. The smallest university in Haraki, it allows in only 14,000 students a year, and enrollment of first-year students is limited to however many will fill in approximately that number. It offers no classes in any of the sciences, for the following reason: the university was established and named after Haraki's most famous and best writer in history, James McBryde. Famed for his novels, short stories, and poems, which were all acclaimed by nearly all who read them, he quickly became famous through the nation over a century ago. However, he became distraught when he realized higher education was being restricted primarily to the sciences, and established a university in central Atherlon to counteract that, the name of which was changed in his honour after his death in the 1920s. Over time it has grown and expanded, but it still does not offer courses in any branch of science. It is by far the best university in Haraki for study of anything in the English department, such as Literature or Creative Writing, and the quality of instruction declines only very slightly as you branch out into other interrelated disciplines, such as the social sciences or history.
Cafundeu

Cafundéu has some good universities in the biggest cities of the country. Most of them are private, but the country has some universtities for important people. They are public and free, and the sons of the politicians and other famous people of the country usually study there.

Surely, the best courses are the ones related to the Economy field and related to Marketing. But the biggest universities tend to have all the sorts of courses, even the most strange ones.

These are the most important public universities of the nation:

Faculdade Jutense (FAJU) - The biggest of the country, is in the capital of the nation. Its campus is enormous and is called "a city inside the city". Offers free accommodations and food, and has more than half a million students. To go there you need to pass a exam. The questions of this exam are related to general knowledge.
Best Courses: Economics, Marketing, Foreign Affairs, Accounting and Maths.

Universidade de Humanas de Lasft (UNIHUL) - In Lasft, it's very big too, it's specialized in arts and public relations, although is good in other areas. Is in the richest neighborhood of the city, and it's near to almost all of the interesting places of the city. To enter there, you only need to get an authorization of the rector.
Best Courses: Scenic Arts, Music, Journalism, Law and Public Relationships.

Hospital de Juta (HJ) - The most demanding university of the whole country, the Juta Hospital is the place where the best doctors of the country study. It's in the capital city too, Cafundó do Juta, but it's located kilometres away from the city center. To enter there, you must to pass a very difficult exam, although some special cases exist.
Best Courses: Medicine, Dentistry, Fono-Audio Studies, Medical Sciences and Medical Chemistry.

Escola Superior de Economia Avançada (ESEAV) - Located in Central City, this university is the one with the most modern infrastructure and equipments. Unfortunately, its courses are only related with the Economics field. This city also is very big and crowded, but its citizen are often very nice. You only need an authorization to enter there.
Best Courses: Economics, Marketing, Administration of Companies, Fiscalization and Foreign Languages.

Universidade de Dunboor (UNIBOOR) - Considered a very liberal university, this university located in Dunboor has many good courses and good professors. Its students talk very often about politics and like to party. To enter there you need to live inside the campus and to get an official authorization.
Best Courses: Veterinary, Philosophy, History, Geography and Biology.

Cafundéu has other universities, but these are the biggest ones. The other courses are: Architecture, Design, Plastic Arts, Computer Science, Physical Education, Sports, Food Science, Exact Sciences, Biomolecular Sciences, Health Sciences, Environment Education, Nursery, Aeronautics Engineering, Agriculture Engineering, Civilian Engineering, Computer Engineering, Mines Engineering, Petrol-Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, Communications, Metalurgy, Naval Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Statistics, Physioterapy, Geophysics, Tourism, Languages, Translation, Degree, Business Maths, Meteorology, Nutrition, Obstretics, Literature, Oceanography, Pedagogy, Psychology, Advanced Technology, and others.

Imperial College is delighted to her that Her Royal Highness Princess Serena would consider our fine institution. There are no special requirements for our Philosophy courses and our professors would be most interested in finding what she's learned on her voyages of self discovery.

We would ask that you send any transcripts of her previous formal education so we can review her application and begin her path to learning. While we are honoured that a person of the Princess Serena's stature would consider Imperial College, we must still process her like any other student. That way she will know that when she walks through our wrought iron gates, and stands on the podium for convocation, she will know that she got there based on her own merits.

Her Royal Highness Princess Serena is grateful for the information provided on a variety of foreign universities. Her Highness is at present considering these various options.

The Princess speaks fluent English, although it is not her native language, and has studied anglophone literature.

Her Highness is, at present, considering enrolling as a first year student in philosophy, but has not dismissed other possibilities.

Cordial greetings from the government and people of Kelssek! Kelssek's universities attract thousands of students from all over the world with high academic standards, an open intellectual environment and our vibrant and exciting cultural life.

Your Highness's interest in Philosophy leads me to reccomend Lionsgate University (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Lionsgate_University). Located in Kirkenes, Kelssek's largest city, it is Kelssek's oldest university and arguably the one which carries the most prestige. Its primary strengths are its arts and humanities programs and this will allow Your Highness access to a great breadth and depth in many of the fields in the liberal arts and humanities.

I would also reccomend Victoria University of Neorvins for its strong graduate programs and its facilities for mature students. Its reputation is, of course, excellent and it also boasts the highest proportion of international students of any university in Kelssek. Its Philosophy department is well-regarded and as with Lionsgate it is a university with a strong reputation for excellence in the arts and humanities. Its campus has a lovely downtown location in our capital Neorvins.

If Your Highness would like to explore other options in Kelssek, I have enclosed promotional materials (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Template:Kelssek_universities) such as prospectuses and viewbooks from some of our major universities. I would be remiss in not also drawing Your Highness's attention to the University of Burnaby, where I studied Philosophy as an undergraduate, and if Your Highness is interested specifically in that subject my alma mater comes with my unqualified reccomendation. It has an excellent academic reputation but the most impressive feature of the U of B, as we call it, is its beautiful, park-like campus sited on the lakeshore.

I have primarily highlighted anglophone universities, but several universities are bilingual and some teach only in French. The latter do usually have language progams to help students acquire the requisite proficiency needed to pursue higher education in the language; I must apologise for my ignorance in what other languages Your Highness is proficient in.

I hope Your Highness will consider pursuing a degree in Kelssek, and do feel free to contact my office should you require any assistance I might be able to provide.

Yours sincerely,

Peter Coakson

To: Her Royal Highness Princess Serena of San Adriano,

I bring you greetings and open arms from the Protoneocratic Dohepdecoracy of Fattyboland. Fattyboland is a large & prosperous country of 1.499 Billion people. It is a country situated on a geographically stunning Island, with a large volcano in the middle of the Island, an enclosed bay with a pristine beach on the East side of the Island (Britannia Bay) and a Large inland sea with a smaller island (Alitalia Island) in the middle towards the East of the Island. The largest city and Capital of Fattyboland is Vina, which is located on the North Western Side of the Volcano. Alitalia Island is home to the Royal Palace and if you choose to study in Fattyboland will be your temporary residence if you choose so to be. Fattyboland is home to only 1 university, Eulers Path Collegiate. Eulers Path Collegiate offers a range of differant courses all taught in state of the art facilities. Some of the Programs on offer include Civil Aviation, International Politics, Modern History, Agriculture & Vitoculture, Ancient Philosophy, English Communication, & various out of campus programs like Nuclear Physics (most classes are taught in the Viola Nuclear Power Facility), Sailing (classes held in Britannia Bay) & Volconology (classes taught in the Fattyboand Volconology Centre, located towards the top of the Volcano). As you can see EPC is very differant from other Universities, that is why someone who is very differant like yourself would be perfectly suited for a study life here in Fattyboland. This study program may also bring our two nations closer together, helping us understand each others customs and traditions more, which can only be a good thing in a time where many nations are at war.

Her Royal Highness has given this matter further thought, and has consulted all available information on the universities which have been suggested. Although Her Highness would be pleased and honoured to attend any of these most excellent universities, her interest is focused on a 'shortlist' of three: the Imperial College in Ironwell, the University of Merlefurt in Gruenberg and Lionsgate University in Kelssek.

The Palace is considering a royal visit to these three nations, if possible, so that Her Highness may increase diplomatic relations between San Adriano and Ironwell, Gruenberg and Kelssek, before she applies to enroll at one of these universities.

Your Highness,

I was both humbled and delighted to learn that you are considering Lionsgate University as among your top choices for further education.

Our university has a long and storied history of academic excellence, from the early beginnings under the Guedian monarchy where nobles sent their children to Lionsgate to be prepared to take roles in governing the nation, to the modern day where we are proud to include five Prime Ministers, three Presidents, and over fifty federal Cabinet ministers as members of our alumni. It would be our utmost honour to have your distinguished self join these illustrious ranks.

At Lionsgate you will find a vibrant intellectual environment and be taught by some of the most eminent academics in their fields. You will find an engaging and enthralling learning experience where we teach our students to question and perceive every angle. It is a tradition which has made us one of the world's pre-eminent institutions of learning.

It would be my honour and pleasure to welcome Your Highness to tour our campus and view our facilities. Your Highness will have the opportunity to meet members of our faculty as well as explore what we have to offer. It would be my pleasure to arrange meetings with members and heads of the departments which cater to your specific interests, and I look forward very much to your visit.

I write to the Palace with gratitude that our offer has been taken into consideration by the good Princess, and can only strongly agree that the best course of action now is for Her Highness to make a visit to Merlefurt to assess the city and university.

I have taken the liberty of relaying our correspondence to the Grand Vizier, the most senior government official in Gruenberg (and himself a UM graduate). He is naturally delighted that we should be one of the shortlisted possibilities for study, and I attach a brief letter from him laying out preliminary plans.
Your Highness,

tepi wen. I pray this letter finds you in good health. Professor Merrahanvit has informed me of your intention to pursue further study abroad, and that the University of Merlefurt has attracted your interest as one possible venue. I can only commend the fine men and women of the institution, where I enjoyed several years, and where indeed our own Sultan saw fit to dally in the literary arts. Sadly, he is presently recuperating from a heart attack, and as such cannot write a personal letter of recommendation himself, but I do not consider it too presumptuous to suggest otherwise he would show no reticence in doing so.

Professor Merrahanvit also informs me that you have suggested a royal visit to Gruenberg, such that you might view the city of Merlefurt, the buildings of its university, and experience a glimpse of the cultural life ahead of you. I find this an excellent idea, and should like to briefly discuss the necessary protocol. I shall arrange for the Sub-Vizier for Hands to make contact with your staff office, such that we might make all necessary accommodations.

As previously mentioned, the Sultan presently recovers, and though he does so with all the strength of Wena herself, he remains too ill to travel. As such, it is unlikely he would be able to come to Merlefurt to meet you in person were the visit to take place in short time, though he would no doubt be delighted to receive you at the Court in Flurthwel. If he were unable to meet you, we should make arrangements for his daughters, the Crown Princesses, to do so in his stead, and I should also hope to make a brief acquaintance.

I shall not pretend I sit in supreme confidence in your choosing ours above the very many other fine and great seats of learning abounding in today's world, but it is my hope that, regardless of your decision, this exchange shall serve to strengthen relations between our two nations. I can assure you that the invitation to study at university in Gruenberg remains open to any of your citizens, and I look forward also to non-academic relations being strengthened.

Grand Vizier Mikkolic Weltin
When details of the visit are arranged, I shall schedule a tour of the facilities: naturally, its scope and duration shall be of your choosing, but I shall in the meantime assume that the schools of literature, language and philosophy, the libraries, the main buildings, and a variety of the colleges, would be of immediate and foremost interest.

I eagerly anticipate the continuance of our correspondence, and the furtherance of discussion regarding this exciting opportunity for both parties.

Yours in hope and blood,
Achtan Merrahanvit

Office of the President

To the Princess Serena,

I speak on behalf of the Republic when I say I am greatly honoured that our nation's most venerable institution has made its was to you shortlist. I never attended Imperial College personally, the Republican Police Academy in Rockforge being my alma mater. My wife on the other hand completed a degree in Social Justice there and came back with many wonderful stories and friendships that last to this day. She often likes to remind me that it was well worth the cost, usually when I reminisce about my old hot rod. What I can tell you this, I have seen the effect that place can have on people. The staff there seem to be more focused on tapping the potential of their students as opposed to seeing how well they can remember pages from a textbook. Your choice of program reminds me of an old professor my Sophie had back in the day. Apparently he was harder and more exacting at times than my Sergeant Major at the Academy. But he made her re-examine herself in a way that shows to this day. While I doubt he's still teaching, there's probably another one like him waiting for you.

Monarch of the Sovereign Village of San Adriano,
Lady of Erigatad

Your Highness,

It is with great pleasure that am writing to you today, firstly on my own accord in the interests of broadening international relations, but also on behalf of Dr. Cory Glendel of Lionsgate University, who informed me of your desire to visit Kelssek and your interest in studying at Lionsgate.

With that in mind I would like to officially invite you to visit Kelssek at your convenience. In addition to diplomatic meetings, to which I will be honoured to welcome you, my government will happily arrange for you to visit Kirkenes and the Lionsgate University campus.

I look forward greatly to your response and to welcoming you to my country.

Yours sincerely,

Alan Kerk
Prime Minister of Kelssek

Mr. Prime Minister,

Your invitation is gratefully accepted. I would, if agreable to you, be available to visit Kelssek upon the completion of my visit to Gruenberg.

Sincerely,
Princess Serena Eu,
Monarch of the Sovereign Village of San Adriano,
Lady of Erigatad

The Princess Serena is welcome to our nation with open arms and we are most pleased to find we are the first stop on her world trip. The current plan is for a two day engagement where she will have a chance to see parts of our Republic in all it's splendor.

After landing in Sarah Orlov International Airport she will be greeted in person by the President and Cabinet. She will be then taken on a tour of the city including the Republican Museum of the Regiments, Grand Forum and ending in a state dinner with President Gunderson in his ceremonial home at Republican House.

On the second day the Princess will receive a full guided tour of Imperial College including a private meeting with the college president and Dean of Social Studies. After the tour at Imperial College the Princess will be invited to speak in the Grand Forum to the Senate in a special session.

Overall event security will be overseen by the Ironwell Republican Police's Phoenix Guard who will work in co-operation with the San Adrianian security details.

Princess Serena tour of three foreign countries begins

Her Royal Highness is visiting three foreign countries – Ironwell, Gruenberg and Kelssek – to establish stronger relations, and to receive a tour of a university in each of these nations. Her Highness has indicated her wish to enroll in one of three foreign universities, to begin studying for a degree in philosophy.

The Princess began her tour by arriving today at Sarah Orlov International Airport in Ironwell, and was welcomed by the President and Cabinet. The authorities in Ironwell have arranged a specific tour, which includes a visit to the Republican Museum of the Regiments, and a State dinner with President Gunderson.

It is not known exactly what the two heads of State will discuss, but there has been speculation that the Sanadrianese Parliament has authorised Her Highness to suggest the establishing of official diplomatic relations.

Tomorrow, Her Highness will visit Imperial College, before adressing Ironwell’s Senate.

The Princess is accompanied by her husband (the Royal Consort Prince Willem), a member of Parliament, and two members of the Sanadrianese Royal Guard. No member of our small newspaper (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Corriere_del_San_Adriano) was able to accompany Her Highness, due to various constraints. The Corriere will be monitoring foreign news reports to keep our readers up to date.

Princess Serena now in Gruenberg

After a two day visit in Ironwell, Her Royal Highness Princess Serena is now in Gruenberg. We understand Her Highness is currently at the Court in Flurthwel, where she is being received by His Highness the Sultan.

The Princess has said that she was "very impressed" during her visit of Imperial College in Ironwell, but has made little in the way of public comments. Her Highness will be visiting the University of Merlefurt shortly.
Gruenberg

The following typed note was placed under the door of Princess Serena's door, which she would presumably have discovered on returning from her visit to the Merlefurt Opera House on the first evening in the city, seeing a production of the famous comedy "Women Are Evil And Must Be Burned With Fire".

Your Princessness,

I write to you under great secrecy, and apologise profusely for this, but I would be in great danger if I were to reveal my identity, or that of those on whose behalf I also speak. I am a student at the University of Merlefurt, at which I understand you are presently visiting and considering studying at, and therefore I beg of you the indulgence of a moment's word.

No doubt many riches were showered upon you during your visit at the Court, and you saw the Sultan and his skilled doctors, yet the majority of Gruenberg's population endures abject poverty and has no access to healthcare. I have heard the water in Flurthwel is scented, yet basic sanitation is unheard of in the eastern provinces. And while you will have had fine food presented for your consumption, millions across this land will have dined on substandard fare produced in unsafe conditions, or on nothing at all.

I write not to scathe, but to inform. This is a land of pestilence and strife, of suffering and lack, of disease and hunger, and all of it is visited on us by the blandly uncaring Court. They will present you with a picture postcard tourist impression of this country, and no doubt you will on the basis of this be disinclined to trust my word, but I can only promise upon my later brother's soul that this is a land where the notion of human rights is entirely subservient to the doctrine of ruthless, incessant subordination.

Therefore, and though it racks me with guilt to do so, I must beg of you to raise the issue of civil, social and political rights, and the complete lack thereof, with those with whom you speak, or at the very least to decline to pursue studies here. The people of Gruenberg are too weak, and too addicted to the honeyed succour offered by the Court's occasional seeming charity, to protect themselves; only through international pressure can there ever be hope for us.

Yours is a small nation, of this I am aware, but that in turn gives up hope that we might all one day live in a nation whose liberty we create for ourselves, something cruelly denied the indigenous peoples who the Court has slaughtered, enslaved and established total dominion over in its grasping imperialism.

I wish you every success in your deliberations on this matter.

Yours in secret,
X

There was a knock at the door. Princess Serena did not immediately answer, but looked up when one of the two Royal Guards accompanying her walked in, with a somewhat apologetic look.

“Forgive the intrusion, Your Highness; I think I forgot. . .” He stopped as he saw the note in her hand, and the trouble expression on her face. “Your Highness?”

“Here.” She stood, and as he walked up to her she handed him the note. She knew this man personnally – as she did all the members of her Royal Guard – and trusted him completely. The guard read it once, quickly, then again, and frowned.

“I’m surprised the author got all the way to your door, Your Highness.”

“Yes. I hope he, or she, was able to get away again safely. . .” Her troubled expression remained. “Of course, there’s no way to find out.” She retrieved the note, and looked at it once more, lapsing back into silence.

After about a minute, the guard, uncertain whether he should stay, coughed lightly. She glanced up at him.

“Do we know whether any of this is true?”

The man hesitated, then shook his head.
“Not to my knowledge. I mean. . . To my knowledge, we don’t know,” he clarified. Serena nodded quietly.

San Adriano’s ressources were limited; its ability to conduct an extensive foreign policy likewise. Its Intelligence ressources were quite simply non-existent.

“Your Highness. . . If I may. Are you thinking of doing something about this?”

His tone was cautiously neutral. Serena gave a sad little smile.
“I don’t determine our foreign policy. That task belongs to Parliament.” She was, after all, little more than a much respected figurehead, the public face of decisions made by the village’s elected assembly. The guard seemed rather relieved at that. She did not allow him time to relax too much. “But. . .”

“‘But’, Your Highness?”

“But, I have thought about this, and if there is any truth to it, I wouldn’t want our Village to condone it in any way.” She paused. “It’s a shame I can’t talk to whoever wrote this. . .” She held up the letter. “Tomorrow, we continue our visit. I’m sure everything has been carefully scheduled.”

“It has, Your Highness. We’ve coordinated with local security –”

“Perhaps the schedule can be changed slightly. What do you think would happen if I asked to be allowed to wander round Merlefurt, near the university, on my own?”

The man’s eyes widened.
“Your Highness, that would be. . . uhm. . . unexpected, I think.”

“Good.” She smiled. “In that case, I won’t suggest it until we’re actually in Merlefurt. I wouldn’t want them to have time to think up excuses.”

As the guard left her, she read the letter one last time, folded it, and slipped it into her pocket. She would show it to Willem, commit its content to memory as best she could, and then destroy it. It was typed, not hand-written, but if the author was telling the truth, she did not want to expose him to the slightest risk should this letter ever fall into Grunberger hands. . .

Princess Serena in Kelssek

Her Royal Highness Princess Serena is currently in Kelssek, on the third and last step of her international tour. Her Highness will be meeting with Prime Minister Alan Kirk and visiting Kirkenes and the Lionsgate University campus.

The Princess is expected to announce her application to study at a specific university a few days after she returns to San Adriano. At that point we will also know whether our country has established official diplomatic relations with Ironwell, Gruenberg and Kelssek.

The red uniforms of the Mounties presented a blinding sight in the clear and sunny winter afternoon as the plane, chartered by the government for the Princess's transportation from Gruenberg. More red was added as a red carpet was rolled out to the door of the small Celestar CL-604 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bombardier_Challenger_604).

The door opened, prompting the military band to strike up a general salute. The commander of the honour guard approached the bottom of the airstairs, accompanied by Prime Minister Alan Kerk.

The Mountie saluted the princess and Prime Minister Kerk held out his right hand.

"Your Royal Highness, it's an honour to meet you. Welcome to Kelssek."

Princess Serena smiled pleasantly and took the Prime Minister's hand for a warm handshake. The air was a lot colder than she was used to, but it was a fresh, healthy coolness, and the sun shone brightly despite the time of year.

Behind her, the two members of the Sanadrianese Royal Guard accompanying her stood to attention and saluted the head the head of Kelssek's government smartly.

"Prime Minister. It's an honour to be here in Kelssek. Thank you very much for your warm welcome." She released his hand and introduced the two men - other than the unarmed, ceremonial guards - accompanying her. "This is my husband, His Highness Prince Willem, brother to the Emperor of Uhuh-Topia. And this is Davide Olesh, member of the Sanadrianese Parliament. Representing my country's elected government."

OOC: Sorry for the delay. I'll move things a little quicker here. http://kelssek.tripod.com/mfa-mae/neorvinsguide.html will probably be useful, the hotel is marked on the first map at the junction of Quebec and Manitoba Avenues, in the bottom right area.
--

"The pleasure is all mine, Your Highness, sir," Alan Kerk said as he shook the others' hands. We will meet at length tomorrow, for now, the transportation will take you to your hotel. Just one little formality, though."

All four of them followed the commander to the reviewing stand for a march-past, while the final thuds of a 21-gun salute echoed in the air. Then it was into a stretch limousine for the trip downtown, at barely 15 minutes, much shorter one than that for most ordinary visitors who would be using Mackenzie King International. Just a quick zip down Autoroute Kieran Pearson, the Douglas Adams onto Downie Avenue, and south on Manitoba through the light mid-afternoon traffic.

A large suite for the Princess and her entourage had been booked at the Laurentia Tower Hotel. With the foreign affairs apparatus of Kelssek's government taking care of all the formalities, there was none of the interminable waiting at the check-in desk while hotel employees tapped furiously away at keyboards, at least not for the any of the foreign VIPs, who were ushered straight into their 44th-floor suite. The Laurentia boasted of its city and bay views and no guest in the Regal Suite would be disappointed...

Meanwhile, at Foreign Affairs Kelssek offices

"...agreement draft, list of embassy sites... good... okay, that's all?" said the staffers compiling the dossier for the next day's meetings. The papers, arranged into binders for the various officials, were placed on the desk awaiting delivery to the intended users.

In the limousine, Princess Serena gazed out at the city scenes flashing past, marvelling at the bustling urban life, the tall buildings and their architecture, the water, shimmering in the light... Cities were not alien to her, of course, but she had grown so used to her quiet village life, where everyone knew everyone else, and the border to a foreign country was just a few metres away (http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/9501/testsa5b1xe8.jpg).

The hotel was as luxurious as it had been in Ironwell and Gruenberg, with the added virtue of a magnificent vue. She smiled, stepping out onto the balcony and looking out over the city. Very soon, it would be time for official diplomatic functions, opening diplomatic relations... and visiting what might soon become her second home for the next few years.

For now, though, she would enjoy a few moments to relax...

"...said he would be overjoyed to hug and fondle the dog. The fire hydrant has since been fixed by the fire department. That's the news from KBC Neorvins, now the weather for the national capital region. In Neorvins, currently minus 5 degrees and clear, clouds will be moving in and a chance of flurries in the evening, a high of minus 1 today. Cloudy overnight and a low of minus 13. Warmer tomorrow, a mix of sun and cloud with and the temperature will peek above freezing with a high of 2. For Hyères, cloudy and a high of minus 8 today, chance of flurries overnight and a low of minus 15..."

Hearing a tap on his window, the limo driver looked up to see the official indicating that the Princess was about to come. Switching off the radio, he smoothed down his "uniform" (a run-of-the-mill business suit) and started the engine. The electric engine came to life with a hum...

***
Any official visit always attracted attention and reporters were crowding the entrance to Parliament buildings. Some ordinary members of the public had also come to gawk at the royal visitors. The mystical power of the faux-velvet ropes, however, proved enough to keep them from getting overexcited as the limousine pulled up to the entrance.

"Madam and sirs, you will be taken straight up to see the Prime Minister," said the Foreign Affairs guide assigned to accompany the visitors. "You may also be interested in this list of suitable locations for foreign embassies, and if you wish, we can easily arrange for you to visit these sites after your meeting with Mr. Kerk."

Princess Serena smiled, faintly but warmly, at the crowd, and gave a graceful little wave. So many people... More than in her entire country, it seemed. She turned to the guide.

"That's very kind; thank you. It may be a little difficult for us to actually have an ambassador present in Kelssek, but there are standard arrangements. Something Mr. Olesh" - she glanced at the member of Parliament - "and I can discuss with His Excellency the Prime Minister."

She and her little delegation followed him up into the Parliament building.
Kelssek

As the delegation approached, the doors to the room known as the Commons Study were opened. It was a small room, carpeted in a dark shade of green and with well-aged antique furniture dating back to the now-extinct monarchy.

Alan Kerk smiled and gestured for them take their seats, before sitting down himself.

"Your Royal Highnesses, sir, a good morning to you. May I introduce Julianne Smitson, Deputy Prime Minister, as well as Peter Coakson, Minister of Foreign Affairs."

They shook hands.

"I trust you all had a good rest?"
San Adriano
09-03-2007, 18:12
"Yes, thank you," Princess Serena said, after exchanging greetings with the other Cabinet members present. "Everything's been perfect. And may I say, Kelssek is a beautiful country."
Kelssek
10-03-2007, 10:53
Alan Kerk inclined his head to thank the Princess for the compliment. "Indeed, ma'am, our people place great value on the natural beauty of our land. We see it as a kind of trust, if you will, a gift we did not earn, something no amount of prosperity can replace... there are others who disagree, of course. But I venture to say that it's thinking along these lines which allowed me to be elected in the first place."
San Adriano
10-03-2007, 16:00
"That's very encouraging," the Princess said with a slight, warm smile. "The people in your country obviously have a healthy and responsible approach to life. A quality I do believe you have in common with the Sanadrianese."
Kelssek
10-03-2007, 16:41
"Indeed. Of course, if more peoples thought that way, we'd all be healthier for it. But other mindsets, generated in foreign settings and foreign cultures... you can't change them, it's impossible. We live with them. You think everyone would be happier if they lived like you did, but they think the same thing about you." Kerk shrugged and smiled.
San Adriano
10-03-2007, 16:48
"That's true, Prime Minister." The Princess returned the smile. "But then that's one of the reasons why we have education. To teach one another about our ways. Promote knowledge, understanding, acceptance."
Kelssek
11-03-2007, 03:48
"Ahh, yes. That is, after all, the main purpose of your visit. People like to say that Lionsgate is coasting on its reputation, that it's elitist, but that's always how it is, with an institution like that, with so much history and stature. You won't be disappointed when you do visit their campus, though, I'm sure of that." Kerk paused. "Actually, I was wondering if some of your nation's brightest students might benefit from scholarships to some of our universities?"
San Adriano
11-03-2007, 13:57
"That's very kind of you," the Princess said gratefully. "I'm sure they'd appreciate that very much. I hope we can increase contact and exchanges between our countries in many ways, and education could be one of the most important."
Kelssek
11-03-2007, 15:59
"I hope for the same, Your Highness. Might we also agree on visa waivers? That would allow much easier travel between our nations, and encourage more contact, as well."
San Adriano
11-03-2007, 16:26
"I cannot speak for Parliament, but in principle I would favour this, yes. Of course, to enter San Adriano you first have to travel through Uhuh-Topia, so you would have to come to an agreement with the Uhuh-Topian government." She glanced at Davide Olesh.

"I would support such a measure in Parliament," the Sanadrianese MP said.
Kelssek
13-03-2007, 06:49
"I see, good, good. Well, perhaps I will have to talk to Uhuh-Topia's government as well. Always good to build international relationships. I understand your two nations have a special relationship?" He turned to Prince Willem, "You are the brother of the Emperor, I am told."
Ropa-Topia
14-03-2007, 19:07
Prince Willem nodded. "That is indeed what people sometimes say about me, and it's true." He smiled. "Emperor James the Second of the Empire of Uhuh-Topia is indeed my brother. As for the relationship between San Adriano and the Empire, it would be rather hard for both nations to ignore each other, as San Adriano is entirely surrounded by Uhuh-Topia."
San Adriano
14-03-2007, 20:08
"And the history between our two countries goes back quite a long way," Princess Serena added, with a glance and a smile at her husband. "My country has been fortunate to have such a benevolent neighbour." She looked at Kerk. "The Sanadrianese depend on Uhuh-Topia for many things. There's no hospital in San Adriano, for example. No fire brigade, either."
Kelssek
15-03-2007, 04:57
"An interesting symbiosis, I'm sure. I was expecting that this would lead to a closer relationship with Uhuh-Topia too." Kerk's attention was caught by an aide pointing to his watch. "Well, it has been wonderful meeting you, Your Highnesses, and Mr. Olesh. Unfortunately our time is almost up, so is there anything else you would like to bring up?"
San Adriano
15-03-2007, 12:34
The Princess looked at Olesh, and nodded.

"The establishing of formal diplomatic relations perhaps, Your Excellency?" the Sanadrianese MP said. "If you agree, out standard procedure is simple. We have very little space, a tiny population and limited means, so we have a diplomat who acts as ambassador to virtually all the nations we have diplomatic relations with. In exchange, we would be happy to recognise any of your ambassadors, stationed anywhere in the world, as being accredited to San Adriano. Perhaps your ambassador to Uhuh-Topia would be a logical choice, though... if you do wish to establish relations."
Kelssek
16-03-2007, 05:24
"Well for the diplomatic relations, consider it done. I think we'll have to sort out the ambassadors later. I certainly would want to establish relations with Uhuh-topia as well, but for now I'll appoint a permanent representative in your nation. Would that work for you?"
San Adriano
19-03-2007, 16:16
"Thank you, yes." Princess Serena smiled, and stood gracefully. "It's been a pleasure meeting you, Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister. Perhaps I, and other Sanadrianese, will have the opportunity to spend a lot of time soon in your beautiful country."
Kelssek
20-03-2007, 01:09
"It was an honour, Your Highness. I hope you will enjoy yourself here. I understand you might be visiting some possible embassy sites before your train to Kirkenes leaves tonight?"
San Adriano
20-03-2007, 02:26
"Yes.'" The Princess smiled slightly. "Although please understand, it will probably be impossible for us to set up an embassy in Kelssek itself. That will be a decision for Parliament, but in all probability our 'general' ambassador will be accredited to Kelssek. If that's acceptable to your government."
Kelssek
22-03-2007, 04:12
"Certainly, I understand. I hope you have a safe journey. It's been a pleasure talking to you and I hope we get to meet again soon."

They shook hands again, and rose. Alan Kerk led the three back to the car. The guide opened the door for them before getting in himself. As the car drove off and merged back into the main road traffic, the red carpet was rolled up and it was back to business as usual. Alan Kerk walked back to his office, mulling what the opposition were going to throw at him during question period later.

"Well, we have some time before the train, so where would you like to go now, Your Highness?"

Looking at the other two, the guide added, "Are we feeling like having some lunch? There's great places for almost any kind of food in this city."
San Adriano
25-03-2007, 16:25
Princess Serena thought about it for a moment, then nodded and smiled.

"Yes, please. That would be nice. I'd like to experience a little of every day life in Kelssek."

Although she and her husband were smartly dressed, she doubted anyone would recognise them. Her face, despite featuring on Sanadrianese lira, was not often seen in international media.

Lionsgate University is privileged to admit Princess Serena. We are sure that she will enjoy and cherish very much the time she will spend at Lionsgate and we wish her all the best in her pursuit of learning and truth, and we are sure she will find that Lionsgate provides the best environment to achieve that aim.
