Popularity of world leaders: international poll

Ariddia
31-01-2007, 00:41
PINA (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Public_International_News_Ariddia) is conducting a poll to find out what the citizens of different nations think of a variety of world leaders. The question "Is your overall opinion of this leader a positive or a negative one?" is applied to each of the leaders listed below. Those polled are asked to answer "positive", "negative", "no opinion" or "never heard of".

In addition, PINA will be publishing a list of comments made by those polled regarding each leader.

The list:
* Allech-Atreus XVI (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Allech-Atreus_XVI%2C_Walanda_XXVI), Emperor of Allech-Atreus
* Richard Atchinson, President of Allanea
* the Holy Basileus of Alasdair I Frosticus
* Fernando Chiovitti (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Fernando_Chiovitti), Prime Minister of Pacitalia
* Jan Willem Daatman (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Jan_Willem_Daatman), Prime Minister of Knootoss
* Ngu Phuok Dinh (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Ngu_Phuok_Dinh), First Chancellor of Sel Appa
* Dominique Domasca (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Dominique_Domasca), President of Krytenia
* Princess Serena Eu (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Serena_Eu) of San Adriano
* Manuelo Fernanda (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Manuelo_Fernanda), President of Omigodtheykilledkenny
* Michael Harley (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Michael_Harley), Prime Minister of Liverpool England
* Alan Kerk (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Alan_Kerk), Prime Minister of Kelssek
* Nuriyah Khadhim (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Nuriyah_bint_Rashad_Khadhim) Prime Secretary of Ariddia
* Albert Mainzer (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Albert_Mainzer), President of Edward City
* Michael Sarzo (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Mike_Sarzo), President of Sarzonia
* Marcellus Valens (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Marcellus_Valens), President of Kahanistan
* Hector Van Tocco (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Hector_Van_Tocco), Emperor of Cafundéu
* Lady Viannor (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Lady_Viannor), Lady Protector of Starblaydia

A great number of countries are omitted because they have no defined, official leader (i.e. Errinundera, Tanah Burung), or because their leader is all but unheard of in international circles (OOC: There's no NSwiki article).

OOC: This is how it works. Simply indicate, for each leader, what percentage of your population selected each of the four options ("positive", "negative", "no opinion" or "never heard of"). You can also include random quotes of comments by your citizens on particular leaders.

Political analyst comment

After almost a century and a half of consensual socialist rule, Ariddians’ political views tend to be, by international standards, rather “extreme” and fairly unanimous. Hence the scores rocketing over 80%, which may seem surprising to foreigners, and contrast with the far more balanced statistics emanating from Pacitalia.

Ariddians on the whole have a high opinion of foreign leaders such as Prime Minister Chiovitti (76.9%) and Prime Minister Kerk (84.5%). Which is not to say they would necessarily be elected if they ran in Ariddia, but they may be surprised to know they’re so popular here in the PDSRA. The Holy Basileus is also popular amongst a vast majority of Ariddians (87.6%). By contrast, a majority of Ariddians (68.5%) have a poor opinion of Prime Minister Daatman, with just 24.1% viewing him in a positive light, and 6% expressing no opinion. All but 1.4% of Ariddians say they have heard of him, however.

Not surprisingly, President Atchinson and President Fernanda fare very poorly, with only 0.2% and 2.2% of favourable opinions respectively; 95.7% of Ariddians have a negative view on the Allanean President, and 96% on the Kennyite.

Also unsurprisingly, a large majority of Ariddians (86.4%) view Sanadrianese monarch Princess Serena favourably. Lastly, the Ariddian leader herself, Prime Secretary Khadhim, is supported by 84.3% of Ariddian citizens, with 11.4% neutral and 4.3% voicing more criticism than praise.

If we contrast these figures with what we have in Pacitalia, we see that political opinions are a lot more divided and diverse in the former Democratic Capitalist Republic. No leader has 60% of positive opinions, compared to five leaders above 75% in Ariddia. In fact, Pacitalians’ favourite leader is – which is fortunate for them – their own leader, Prime Minister Chiovitti, who enjoys the support of 59% of Pacitalian citizens.

Pacitalians on the whole view foreign leaders kindly. Twelve of the seventeen leaders listed received more positive than negative views, with Emperor Van Tocco tied at 29% both ways. The only leader Pacitalians strongly disapprove of is Lady Viannor, who is viewed critically by 42%, and positively by only 7%.

There are other ways in which Pacitalian citizens distinguish themselves from their Ariddian counterparts. President Atchinson receives more support than condemnation, by a narrow margin (29% / 24%). And most Ariddians would find it bizarre that President Fernanda is viewed favourably by 48% of Pacitalians (unfavourably by 31%).

25% of Pacitalians are, strangely enough, very critical of Princess Serena; it would be interesting to find out why. Their favourite foreign leader is Prime Minister Daatman (51%), with President Fernanda taking second place.

Finally – and most interestingly from an Ariddian perspective – Pacitalians are very divided regarding Prime Secretary Khadhim. 9% have never heard of her, whereas only 0.8% of Ariddians have never heard of Chiovitti. Of course, it may help that Chiovitti has been popularised by Westville News (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Westville_News), but Ambassador Majidi may have to do more to make Ariddia a household name in Pacitalia. 27% of Pacitalians have no opinion about Khadhim. 31% disapprove of her, and 33% approve of her, so opinions really are quite diverse.

The fact that Ariddia’s leader is viewed favourably by a third of the Pacitalian population, however, may be seen as encouraging as the two countries continue to develop and strengthen their diplomatic relations.

Where can I submit for my leader?

OOC: Prime Minister Romney wasn't included because there's no NSwiki article on her. Voters would need some information on which to form an opinion. She can be added for future voters, if you like, if there's available information on her.

As for posting what your citizens think of the foreign leaders listed, you can do that here.

Analysis
The polled nations were viewed by many as a random sample: many traditional Knootian allies and enemies were not included in the sample. Polled Knootians were shown a picture of foreign leaders and this is believed to have influenced the results. "Pretty" foreign leaders score a noticeably higher approval rating, despite being virtually unnoticed in the Knootian media. "Ugly" people, on the other hand, tended to score poorly.

Fernando Chiovitti, Prime Minister of Pacitalia finds himself more popular than Prime Minister Daatman at home. This number is believed to be influenced by generally amicable relations between the Capitalist Republic and the Dutch Democratic Republic. Mr. Fernanda, of Omigodtheykilledkenny conversely finds himself deeply unpopular, despite reasonably amicable ties and past cooperation in the United Nations on various issues.

The Arridian Prime Secretary finds himself surprisingly popular in Knootoss considering diplomatic relations, as does Michael Harley, the Prime Minister of Liverpool England who is more known in the Dutch Democratic Republic for his feats in sports. Mr. Valens of Kahanistan is judged as incompetent at face value.

Unsurprisingly, the Holy Basileus of Alasdair I Frosticus and the leaders of Cafundéu, Allech-Atreus and Sel Appa found themselves largely unknown to the Knootian public.

{OOC: What about Mobutu Sese Seko (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Mobutu_Sese_Seko)?}

OOC: I almost included him, but the fact that you RP in a seperate Earth (and only in II as far as I know?), plus the fact that your RPs are based on the "real" world, which most NS nations consider not to exist, would have made it a little strange.

Still, if nations want to poll their citizens about Mobutu, feel free.

In Ariddia, the figures would be: 0.4% / 98.1% / 1.3% / 0.2%.

PINA poll: Allech-Atreus leader most popular among Kennyites
'And that ain't sayin' much,' analysts admit; Ariddian lady comes in dead last

PARADISE CITY (Town Crier) -- An Ariddian news poll on the international popularity of world leaders has placed Allech-Atreus XVI first among Kennyite respondents, with Ariddia's Prime Secretary Whatsherface not surprisingly polling very poorly by comparison, scoring last. President Fernanda, meanwhile, seems to enjoy mixed reviews among foreigners.

The Public International News Ariddia (PINA) survey, conducted in numerous notable powers around the NS world, found that the Allech-Atreus emperor was the most popular of 17 national leaders, garnering a 40-percent approval rating. Ariddia's communist prime secretary polled only 9-percent approval, with 69 percent indicating they disapproved of her.

Analysts attributed the two leaders' converse ratings not so much to public opinion about the actual leaders but rather to Kennyite perceptions of their respective nations' UN policies.

"Although Ariddia gets a bonus negative rating for its woefully misguided communist system, and because their prime secretary has an eerily Arab-sounding name," said Janet Helmsbury, professor of statstical analysis at Paradise City University. "Also influencing the rating are reports from UN gossip columnists about Ariddian Amb. Christelle Zyryanov's suspicious regard for the Kennyite delegation. The PDSRA health ministry's critical assessment of the Federal Republic's so-called 'social rights (http://z11.invisionfree.com/Antarctic_Oasis/index.php?showtopic=226)' policies was also considered an insult to their national pride."

By contrast, Allech-Atreus' namesake leader scored much higher in the nationwide study, although researchers attributed little significance to the ranking.

"He was basically the choice that Kennyites hated the least," said Richard Seaver, director of the Clark Research Institute, which was contracted to conduct the PINA poll in the Federal Republic. "Allech-Atreus XVI's government has been mostly supportive of the Kennyites at the UN, so respondents awarded him with a higher rating, though they don't know much about the emperor personally."

Nor do they seem to know much about anything, as the administration of the survey suggested. PINA pollsters admit that trying to get relevant responses out of a population as hopelessly dimwitted as the Kennyites was something of an amazing feat for interviewers.

"Never again," said a visibly infuriated PINA pollster Angela Heinreich, while taking a puff off her cigarette. "Never again."

In order to relate to the intelligence level of the average Kennyite, telephone pollsters had to use very short, simple words and phrases, with numerous pre-approved help screens describing the politicians. For example: "Prime Minister Fernando Chiovitti of Pacitalia is a quasi-socialist who favors taking citizens' hard-earned beer money and giving it away to some poor, unworthy slob. Considering this, do you approve or disapprove of this leader?"

For respondents who still didn't understand what the hell the pollsters were talking about, interviewers were instructed to ask them, "When you think of this leader, so you think happy thoughts, or unhappy thoughts?"

Researchers found that in many areas, door-to-door and face-to-face interviews worked more effectively. In this sample, people were shown bright, colorful photographs and cartoon drawings of the leaders and given written surveys with pictures of the leaders and a happy face, a sad face, an unsure face, and the face of an ignoramus scratching his head next to each. Interviewees were instructed to circle with crayon the smiley face that best described their feelings about him or her. In some instances electroshock therapy had to be administered.

Even after all these accomodations, not enough quality data could be collected for most of the listed world leaders, and thus, ten of the subjects had to be removed from the Kennyite results. In all, PINA surveyed 3,297 adults.

On the whole, Federal Republic residents were more amenable to leaders who advocated conservative, free-market, or NSUN "sovereigntist" policies, and were more critical of leftist, socialist or anti-sovereigntist politicians. Those sampled were sharply divided in their assessment of Chiovitti and Knootian Prime Minister Jan Willem Daatman, but those with an opinion mostly disapproved of Sarzonian President Michael Sarzo and Kelssek Prime Minister Alan Kerk.

Kennyites gave Fernanda a 54-percent approval rating, a drop in his usual national popularity score to be sure. Some OMGTKK scholars noted however that PINA and Clark's survey methods didn't exactly comport with common Kennyite perceptions of "scientifically accurate data."*

The rating of his own citizens was Fernanda's highest in the international poll, though Pacitalia and Sarzonia also gave him relatively high marks. Ariddians, Knootians, Errinunderans, Sanandrianese and Kelssekans were not so kind. But most in the Federal Republic don't give a rat's ass what some scummy foreigners think of them or their leaders, so the results did not meet with much interest locally.

In addition to the PINA sample, the Paradise City Town Crier surveyed 2,009 adults about six other world leaders with whom Kennyites were more familiar. Gruenberger Sultan Gardab Woltzten IX was the most popular, with 51% approval. Sheik Nadnerb bin Cluich, Cluichstan's ambassador to the United Nations, was second, with 49 percent.

In Cluichstan's case, the UN ambassador was rated, as opposed to the nation's leader, since few internationally know what, if anything, the sultan (assuming he's a sultan; they call themselves a "sultanate") does. And admittedly, most of bin Cluich's activities on the UN floor have involved obscenities, grotesque violence, bragging about some "Death Star," and saying "I agree with that guy."

"He says so much using so few words," said an easily impressed respondent. "It's like, all intellectual and shit." For the irregular use of a multisyllabic word, the interviewee was immediately referred for psychiatric evaluation.

Kennyites were divided in their opinion of Karmicarian Queen Adrienne, who recently wed a Kennyite. Her choice was an Xt'Tapolopaquetl native, who are not well-liked among the general populace.

Co-President Dicey Reilly of Ardchoille, a leader with whom the Federal Republic has shared some diplomatic friction, was viewed poorly by OMGTKK residents, as was Ausserland's Prince Leonhard II.

* "If visiting taverns throughout the Federal Republic and raising a beer glass and shouting, 'Three cheers for President Fernanda!', then counting the number of celebratory shots fired into the air versus the number of beer bottles angrily hurled at your head isn't 'scientific' enough for these hippy scumbags, I don't know what is!" --Ben Knightly, Town Crier Managing Editor, on survey methods used for a previous Fernanda approval poll (http://z11.invisionfree.com/Antarctic_Oasis/index.php?showtopic=168).

Somehow all the canidates finished with 100% Favorites votes. Upon further inspection of the e-mail addresses, the e-mails were all sent to the same person, who had 14,000 e-mail addresses. His kid thought it was a contest or something, and voted Favorable for each canidate. So the vote now will be done in the usuall Qazoxian way by threatening random people on the street with violence unless they take part of the poll.

Indeed. ;) Some may not really know the leader, and the only image they have of Allanean politics is a very negative one.
