World Water Polo Championships (Sports RP interest thread)
Just gauging the level of interest in this. I'm planning to get it started Jan 19th. I'll use an excel spreadsheet to scorinate and there'll be RP bonus, and most likely it'll be the usual group stage then playoffs format.
So go on and register your interest and ask questions, whatever.
The Great Monty Python

The Great Monty Python would like to take part, but how many people would be in a water polo team? And are there any restrictions into who can take part? (As we only have a parrot polo team, where you play polo riding on the back of a dead parrot)
6 players plus one goalkeeper and 6 substitutes. For the tournament squad size I'll go by whatever FINA uses for the world championships, will have to look it up.
You can RP anything that's reasonable.

Venues
KIRKENES
Lionsgate University Aquatics Centre, capacity 7,400
Owned by and on the grounds of Lionsgate University, arguably Kelssek's most prestigious university, the LUAC (pronounced "loo-ack") was opened in 1991 and was one of the first sports venues to incorporate eco-friendly features such as a solar roof, which reduces the building's energy consumption by 20% and is the training venue for the national water polo team as well as the home of the KWPL's Blues Water Polo Club, which is affliated with the university.
NEORVINS
National Aquatics Centre, capacity 11,200
Built in 2002, the National Aquatics Centre is a state-of-the-art aquatics arena located on Desjardins Street in the Bay Square North district, next to the city's convention and exhibition complex. Transportation is eased with the Bay Square railway station within walking distance just 1 km south and bus stops allowing connection to the city's mass transit system, the NUR. The National Aquatics Centre is the home of the Neorvins Titans of the Kelssek Water Polo League.
ULYANOV
Irbes Swimming Stadium, capacity 6,200
Built in 1923, this sandstone-brick arena on the Federal Prospekt is full of history and atmosphere. Home to the dominant Dynamo Lupinissia club of the old Western Water Polo League, this building was where the national championship trophy was brought back to every year from 1944 to 1958. Today the KWPL's Spartak Ulyanov are trying to recapture the glory days.
OUTINEAU
Centre Ste-Hélène, capacity 8,900
Home of the KWPL's Alouettes de Outineau, this aquatics arena just south of the city's downtown was completed in 2004 and features a clear retractable roof. Nicknamed "the crystal", this ultramodern facility's first event was the 2004 National Swimming Championships. When it rains, spectators are often fascinated with watching the rain hitting the roof.

The Az-cz gnomes will also be competing in the Water Polo Championships.
Altanar will be sending a team also.
I'm going to hold out for 12, hopefully 16. Those who have signed up so far, feel free to post rosters. The first game will be played on Jan 19th.

Can you direct us to info on how to make rosters. I'm only vaguely familiar with water polo (although I had an absolute blast at the match I attended in person)
Rosters should have 13 players.
Very basically, there are just three kinds of players - the goalie, the centre forward (or hole set, there are other names too), and the perimeter players, who aren't always in the same role/position every attack, and are called wings, points or drivers, which relates to the position they're in on the attack.
There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of consistency on what position names different teams are using, or even how specific they are. I've used "Driver" for perimeter players, "centre" for the centre, and "utility" for the all-rounders able to play any position. GK is pretty obvious.

Thanks. It's kind of sad how little I know about Water Polo considering:
1. I have friends in High School who played it.
2. One of my best friends at uni loved it.
3. My best friend at uni roomed with a Water Polo Olympian freshman year.
4. I went to one of the best Water Polo universities in America

Three days after the final cuts were announced, the final team gathered for training camp in Kirkenes. There was some embarrasment for new call-up Luke Warrener, who was striking up a conversation with some of his new teamamates and, not looking where he was going, stumbled over a bump and fell into the pool...
Well, I guess 8 teams is all we're going to get. I've drawn these two groupings, and unless we get to 12 teams by some miracle before the 19th, new signups will be put into these groups.
Qualifiers to the semi-finals will be the top two of each group. It's 2 points for a win and 1 for a draw.
GROUP A - (Outineau, Neorvins)
Az-Cz
Kelssek
Quakmybush
Cafundeu
Bazalonia
GROUP B - (Ulyanov, Kirkenes)
Coocoostan
Altanar
Milchama
The Great Monty Python
Bazalonia
12-01-2007, 05:49
Bazalonian Water Bazalopes would like to put in a tentative entry which can be confirmed what ever by the hosts at any time should it be deemed necessary
"How on earth could there be a bump on the pool deck?" asked one of the arena staff, "he must've slipped on a puddle or something."
RP thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=514750) is now up with fixtures.

(Note: One more team can still sign up before the first games are scorinated on Friday, they will go into Group B. In fact, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE one team sign up if just so it doesn't seem so unfair. Though you could say that Group B's advantage is somewhat counteracted by the more taxing travel.)
hiya. Random Toast's Water Polo team look on with interest at the tournament and wonder if it is too late to join?
Sorry, it's already begun. Maybe next time.
