Midchilda OOC Thread

In order to save space later on, all my roleplaying threads, OOC questions and answers will go here so not to interupt any actual roleplay and to better organise things.

Pretty simple really.

Firstly, (lol, spoilers I suppose) a quick OOC introduction to the Gentle Dawn taken from a application to a thread that never happened:

The Gentle Dawn

A small but elite secret magical organistion that works to keep mankind safe and protects Midchildia from dangerous magical threats both internal and external. Relatively young compared to other secret magical orders, the Gentle Dawn is only several generations old and was originally founded by a young teenage mage whom had vowed to protect her homeland, Midchildia, from the magical dangers which occasionally occur in the peaceful small serene republic.

The organisation itself is comprised of mostly young mages, usually in their teens due to a strange magical potency in Midchildia mages that only seems to occur at puberty before settling down to more normal levels a little way into adulthood. Despite this, however, the ability to properly channel the human spirit into magical effects is exceptionally rare among the populace and only a few, if any, are found and recruited by the Gentle Dawn each year, varing in ability. It is often found that the more powerful mages in the Gentle Dawn are girls with boys taking more of a support role with wider range of abilities in the place of raw power.

Nice to see you're interested, Austar Union. For the most part your post is exactly the sort of thing I'm interested in seeing in responce to my thread, however there are some minor details I'm afraid I should have covered... unfortunately I'm still getting used to the heavy amount of writing and creative effort required to do this properly so I was rather tired lastnight to properly define things.

Firstly and perhaps most importantly I'll explain what other magic users and societies may have picked up from the previous nights incident depending of course on how much they are paying attention and watching international magic us.

During the fight itself perhaps the only noticable thing to those with very sensative, active monitoring would likely have picked up the magical barrier errected to contain the fighting and obscure the effects, beyond that all the spells used within the barrier are impossible to pick up at distance for fairly obvicous reasons. Historically nations may have noticed this happening from time to time within Midchilda; the nations magical background count is unusually high but it's not known for anything more then fairly normal modern day interactions with the outside world. More often then not these barriers are small and probably very very hard to notice from another nation... thus Midchilda hasn't received much attention in the past, not to mention the background count tends to interfere slightly making precision and fine detail harder. Still, every couple years there are a few larger barriers which would be more noticable... though it still hard to notice unless you're looking for it.

In this incident, however, pretty much anyone keeping even the most passive amount of attention on international magic use, or hell, if you're just close enough, you'd have noticed the overwhelming burst of magical energy required to actually break and destroy the barrier further powered by what could be described as artifact level magic (Chaos Seed). Further analysis will likely reveal some of the spells properties, like how it's clearly an offencive spell designed to inflict alot of focused magical damage along with something akin to a signiture which could be used to identify and link to both the mage and the artifact if compared with a sample/example.

A little later at dawn the planetfall of the Chaos Seed's fragments is much less noticable and practically impossible to track due to the effects of blast that caused it to break up in the first place. Only the most sensitive powerful osbservation magics would pick up that the Seed wasn't destroyed, much less be able to work out where each fragment falls. Alone each fragment should be very hard to search for without some kind of example in the first place... they are inactive until found by a living individual with some kind of desire (this may include animals which may themselves be transformed into monsters for the perposes of plot should anyone want to find one that way). Once they are active they are a clear source of energy, though not powerful enough to track internationally. Once a fragment is found, actively searching for others is easier though still a bit of a challenge.

Secondly and perhaps almost as important for the time being at least is that the organisation I've described above isn't internationally known yet. Seemingly even Midchilda itself isn't made aware of it's existance and is left to live blissfully unaware of the potent magical battles within it's borders. The Gentle Dawn generally make a effort to set up barriers as described above in order to contain threats and keep the peace... this itself has probably been noticed to some extent, but until now it hadn't been so blatant.

So, AU, basically I'd like you to edit your post slightly... it's perfectly reasonable that your organisation will have picked up the disturbance (it's hard not to) but I'd rather you changed it so not to directly contact the Gentle Dawn as of yet. As magic organisations go they are still somewhat fledgeling and lack contacts... they have opperated only within Midchilda on their own power for some time now. If you'd rather not go through the hassle of flying over and looking for the local authorities (or even investigating yourself as though none existed) then you may ask for your post to be removed... though it's up to you, I'd like some people to join in and I'll try and compromise with people to fit their own concepts into this, thanks for the interest regardless.

The above facts taken into concideration and a few very normal basics understood (no nuking me or invading me please) this thread is open to anyone of any tech level so long as they respect my own concept, even if you don't normally bother with magic or just want to play a character or even a local Midchildian.

How... real are U designing your RP? I mean, Midchilda is a nation like any in NS, but with not all-human caracters, or some sort of magical garden, placed in a sort of magical place, not so much in this world but in one of the many universes in NS multiverse?
For instance, I RPed with nations very well established in reality, but with a sort of Elf Party ruling. They had weapons an news service and all. Is this what your aiming, or you wanty something more like Heroes of Might and Magic, not-so-much-tech-but-more-magic universe?
In any case, nice, well told story

Hey Midchilda, I want to join but I have a question first lol

Are people only allowed to find one stone fragment at first? And would two stones be somewhat nearby (for example, one guy finds stone, walks away. Soon he finds himself against a giant mutant bear-monster, he kills it, then takes the stone)?

Heh, I'll be fairly blunt and outright say that realism isn't too much of an issue concidering my concept. Midchildia itself is supposedly entirely human based with modern day technology much like any other real nation around toda; that doesn't mean to say that stange things don't exist, just that as far as the main populace is concerned it's a normal nation with very simple values. In reality, Midchildia interacts with the rest of the nationstates world, magic nations included and given my concept I'll accept roleplay from practically any nation providing they don't attempt to overwhelm force their concept onto mine. In this respect I'm thinking of players who try and say magic works their way and their way only... where as I think everyone has a right to roleplay their own magic as they like and respect others.

Getting back to the original question though, Midchilda is basically a normal island nation with a magic girl twist. Pretty much all roleplay I intend to do will be based around that twist interacting with the world and the storyline I intend to set up, depending on how things progress they may travel to other nations where I'll rely on anothers description. The landscape of Midchilda's main island is fairly mundane, some of the more outlying small islands are still fairly untapped and wild with the odd ruins and other little interests for future concideration, but are at the very least seemingly mundane from the outside.

I suppose the kind of interaction I'm looking for here is kind of hard to explain because I'm taking a silly concept and taking it seriously if only so others won't dismiss it outright. I think generally speaking it's up to each poster to work out how they want to respond and once I finally get around to finishing the start I can get around to getting this thing started properly. It should be easier for me once I started because the two serious posts at the start are mostly me getting the core concept out of the way and into the open so people know what to expect. Eitherway, take it or leave it as you like, I'll say something if there is a problem and generally only to clear up OOC misunderstanding regarding Midchilda magic itself.

Also, I would like to apologise, especially to Austar Union, for the slow start here. I've got half the second post writen (its another big one) and I've been a little busy over the holiday period, though probably not enough to justify my lag. Eitherway I'll see about finishing tonight and getting this moving at a reasonable (but hopefuly not too quick) pace.

Are people only allowed to find one stone fragment at first?

I'd rather not put too many limits onto people to do with these stones as they wish to their own imaginations, however given the nature of the fragments decent back down to Earth, I'd say that they are usually found on their own with the distance between each one being fairly far, anything from a kilometre to a just one found in one nation... depending on how you want to do it though they shouldn't be common in the slightest, people are supposed to work a little to find more then one. That said, I see no problem with exceptions that allow someone who just happened to find one to find another on some creature that was warped by finding one themselves... it's not impossible that a couple could be near each over (especially if it further split during the decent) and the principal would be that you would still need to work hard for the second one because it's inside/on some mutated bear you found.

I'll leave the details up to you guys, alone they are relatively powerful. At least enough to allow a mundane person to awaken their own powers or otherwise mutate them or do whatever you want with... but not earth-shatteringly powerful. I'd probably also say that multiple shards have diminishing returns; having two stones wouldn't offer twice the boost of one, it'd still be significantly more then one alone but without a complete set it wouldn't be effecient.

Obvicously, I expect people to be reasonable... I don't mind people finding a few fairly quickly so long as it's at least implied that effort was taken (the first can be as easy or hard as you like) but don't take the piss by having a necklace a dozen shards early in the story. As for how many shards there are... I'll leave it unspecified for a while. Each shard is tiny in comparison to the full stone so there should be at least several dozen of the things around if only to make the collection and eventual conflicting interests all that more interesting.

In anycase, details will hopefully sort themselves out as we go along. I have a vague plot in mind for my own people... but as for the fate of the shards? It's open and depends entirely on how things go. I can't plan for something like that until I've got an idea of where everything is going and I only control my own assets... the only control I have over the shards is to describe and explain them when required depending on IC examination as well as occasionally offering some side effects to those who use/carry them, though the ultimate effect (if any) is up to you the player, no horrid mutations or anything like that unless you want it... but I may feel free to RP some kind of empathic link between user/shard.

I hope that helps, not sure how much I'll be able to do tonight but I'll try and get myself sorted out soon enough, thanks for the interest.

Edit: I've finally editted the second post to add the 'normality' part of the story, I apologise if it's a bit dull to read in some respect, but I wanted to get it out of the way. Pretty much set for this now. Even if I don't get any more interest I've got a vague idea of where I'm taking it, just means I'll be NPCing more stuff.

Any tech level? Hmm, then, even though I'm FT, you wouldn't mind if one of my Methuselah (think vampire, of a sort) joins the party?

If yes, I've got just the character in mind who's got some powers and abilities that could be considered 'magickal' in nature.

Though, this shattered crystal story and characters going around collecting shards sounds very familiar.

Though, this shattered crystal story and characters going around collecting shards sounds very familiar.

Of course it is, it's a blatant animu plot device that has been used several times in different settings. It's also common in fantasy games to with it's own variations as it's perfect for giving all sorts of characters a reason to roam about anywhere they please on a adventure, be it for power, to help out, to discover hidden secrets or just for the sake of a journey.

Yes, I accept all settings more or less, providing some restraint is used so not to overwhelm the thread with a large space vessel coming down to threaten the city or what have you. A vampire (technology powered or otherwise) is perfectly acceptable... even a Methuselah if it's the kind of old vampire I remember from various settings, just try to respect everyone elses concept.

I don't mind fairly powerful characters, my own concept is designed to be over the top and silly from the offset, but everyone RPs their own guys and try not to assume how someone will act unless they roleplay it like that... we each RP our own because we each know our strengths and limits. Beyond that have fun.

Eitherway it's up to you guys, if you're interested you're interested and if you aren't then you aren't. I have a basic idea of where I'm going with this though it will probably take a while to actually get there as the thread will run on how everyone intracts more then it will based on any planned events.

Cool.

Though, main thing you should know, is that I prefer to RP character interaction to build up the personality of each of my characters. This means that my posts have no guaranteed length.

As for how I was getting there, I'm considering a couple options, though landing one of my scouts (all my Empire's ships are around the 100 meter long mark) out of sight in the water and bring her into port acting like its a normal sea-going craft (so as to avoid a inferiority complex developing amoung your non-magickal population if I had just landed out in the open on land). Might even have the crew put up some fake sails to add to the illusion.

^That sea-based landing idea for the reason I mentioned sound acceptable for you?

Oh, and here's the base stats for the scout class I plan to use:

Raptor class:
http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o293/True_Human_Empire/Ships/scout_raptor.jpg
Length: 100 meters
Beam: 60 meters
Height: 18 meters
Decks: 3
Mass: 90,000 metric tons
Crew: 12

Oh, and please check your TGs.

Up to you really, though I would prefer that it's either concealed or disguised in order to avoid having to roleplay culture-shock right off the bat. The above would need some kind of fake documentation at least for the ship it's pretending to be, but that shouldn't be hard to obtain... failing that you could land it somewhere FT on Earth and just fly over like a tourist.

Anyways, telegrammed you back. Length short or long shouldn't be a problem. The only reason I've posted so much in parts is because I wanted to get description out of the way and properly introduce my concept.

Looks like this may be a nice opportunity for me to use my new organic rated transporter technology. No landing craft required and I can just park my ship in an orbit where the moon masks its presence or something.

I'll get to work on my intro post for the IC thread as soon as I can. Due to the size of the RP in question, I'm going to try to make it one of my best posts thus far in my short NS history.

Mid, you want me to TG you with the list of powers the character I plan to use has along with little blurbs about his guns (only difference between them and RL ones is the size is too big for a human to wield)? Or do you want me to post them here in this thread?

EDIT: Actually, going with your 'magick girl' theme, I've decided to swap out the character I mentioned in my TG to another one. Still, the above question stands for her. If you want, I'll post a character stat thing here for you to reference for her.

If it will make you feel any happier then feel free to TG me or post the statistics for your character (either one) with any information you feel it's important to know, so far everyone else just joined in with only the most craziest concept so far asking me before doing it (meow meow meow). Personally I trust people enough for the moment to choose their own limits and introduce their characters and their powers as they see fit be they mundane or from a completely different concept altogether.

My own theme is something I'm amused with and having it interact with other ideas as it makes for something different and new. In anycase just go with whatever you feel is most enjoyable for yourself. You don't have to inform me what it is and what it's capable of, but I suppose I won't mind if you prefer to do .

Wow, telegrams. Anyways, as I get around to reading them all and answering them I think I should probably note that Trinity Blood won't really be able to continue in this roleplay due to the fact he's been deleted for being a DOS nation.

Minor inconvenience for anyone who intended on interacting with his character but fortunately he didn't get involved to the degree where I think it will be a problem, eitherway, just a heads up. Oddly that kind of rounds things off again with everyone (I think) having themselves something to do, more or less.

Edit: Additionally, I've currently got builders working on the roof and wall around my window, so my connection to the internet for the next couple of days could be a little spotty. I have other access points but I'm not nearly on them as much as I am this room. I would hope it shouldn't affect my normal lazy posting pattern, but I figured I'd give warning that for once it may not be my fault. :p

I would kindly ask that next time when somebody tries to capture one of my characters, to take it slowly: do your magic/attack/whatever, and wait for my response. Sorry to say, I'm one of those guys who does a lot of background TG, informing my counterparts of my attack's type, strongness whatever might help him RP better. While I do not expect the others to have my amount of free time, patience or concern for this-idea-of RP, I do expect to take things slowly in a conflict-like situation.

I more or less agree, though speed isn't so much the problem as more a matter of keeping to freeform roleplaying etiquette by not automatically assuming you are sucessful when acting against another character. Usually it depends on who you are roleplaying with as to how much you can take for granted.

So far things have been ok on my end and the one case where I was auto-stealthed was acceptable for what was needed, though I'd prefer in the future the attempt is roleplayed as opposed to the conclusion.

Now I have alot of things to catch up with as the builders are more or less done for this week and I'll have more time to plug back in my machine and get my part moving again. I apologise for my delays so far as it hasn't been entirely impossible to post over this period... it's just hard to think properly while displaced and disorganised.
