OOC: An idea that's been drifting round the back of my mind for a while. ICly, Ariddia would be interested in inviting teams to take part in a football World Cup for Indigenous peoples (http://ns.goobergunch.net/wiki/index.php/Category:Indigenous_peoples). The purpose (IC) would be to raise awareness regarding the existance of Indigenous minorities.

For the purposes of the Cup, "Indigenous" would be defined in accordance with the NS United Nations' "Rights of indigenous peoples (http://www.nationstates.net/page=UN_past_resolutions/start=88)" resolution:

§1 Defines Indigenous peoples as the descendants of the peoples who inhabited the present territory of a state wholly or partially at the time when persons of a different culture or ethnic origin arrived from other parts of the world, overcame & reduced them to a non-dominant or colonial situation; who now live more in conformity with their social, economic and cultural customs & traditions than with the institutions of the country of which they now form a part, under State structure which incorporates the national, social & cultural characteristics of other segments of the majority population

Other than that, it is left to each country to define whether a person is part of a or the Indigenous minority. Each country can send one Indigenous team. All players on the team must be Indigenous under that country's laws and under the NSUN definition.

This will probably be a very small event, since few nations seem to have an Indigenous population. But for those of you who are interested, simply let me know in this thread.

I'll be away over the Christmas period, so the Cup will take place in January. I'm posting this now to see how many people would be interested, and see about how and when to organise it.

Starblaydia

I've had something similar knocking around in my brain, but on a more local level. As Starblaydia has expanded twice (within Atlantian Oceania's map (http://www.thirdgeek.com/maps/ao/)) it took over the former nations of Nemya and Aquiliana, which is seen in the occasional Greek or ASMV-style name with double-i letters in them. I'd been thinking about a 'Starblaydi Home Nations' (Starblaydia, Nemya, Aquiliana and Nova Britannicus) tournament for my own purposes.

Quite if I could be bothered to think up four 'national' teams from within Starblaydia is quite another matter, however :D

Well, you can send one mixed "Indigenous" team to Ariddia. ;)
Altanar
19-12-2006, 19:21
OOC: I'm curious if the Akamians in my nation would meet the definition of an "indigenous" people. If so, I'd probably be willing to send a team along. I might need some coaching on how to do that though (no pun intended), since I've never done a sports RP before.

No problem. A sports RP isn't very difficult, but I (and others, I assume) will answer any questions you have.

Who are the Akamians?

Who are the Akamians?

The Akamians are people from a region that Altanar absorbed, more or less voluntarily, in the early 1900s. While most of the people there went along with it, a substantial minority (roughly 20%) of the population remains opposed to the annexation, and have their own political party and independence movement. A much smaller group advocates the use of force, if needed, to separate from Altanar.

I'd say they qualify.

Excellent....then they'll have a team present.

Go on then, stick Starblaydia (Nemyans, Aquilianans, Dwarves) in to your tournament :)

Updated! Welcome to the Cup. ;)
Wentland
19-12-2006, 23:06
*sigh* I suppose the Warplands, although seemingly integrated within Wentland, have enough of a separate identity to count - especially with Norman Hacker not picking many of their players...
Cafundeu
19-12-2006, 23:41
Cafundéu would like to send players from the Vigiah(they dominated Cafundéu before the technology reached the country), Tupi(they lived in the place that now is Estresse Intenso, and they are the ones that have the best relationship with the other tribes) and Boi-Jutá(members of this tribe helped to create the city of Cafundó do Juta, now the capital of Cafundéu).

So, a team composed of Vigiahs, Tupis and Bois-Jutá will be created to participate in this competition.

Quakmybush
20-12-2006, 00:57
Quakmybush will send the Tiki Men of the southern part of Quakmybush.
Milchama
20-12-2006, 01:22
Besides the fact that I think this is PC gone to far (we have indeginous players on our World Cup teams) Milchama does have Mongols and they probably would be itching to play so therefore:

Sign us up! Mongolian Horsies are in.

Updated.
Rejistania
21-12-2006, 16:42
The Ly (Xly or |ly in some transcriptions) sign up representing the MIK (minheje'he'ny Isil Kasme, endangered minorities) of Rejistania. The Lyish culture currently is endangered especially by the Seleken Nation movement, which tries to establish their culture as culture of the southwestern nanti likhat.
Laethora
21-12-2006, 18:36
The Jyyzith population of Laethora would like to be considered for entry into this tournament.

Despite there only being a small number (a few hundred) of Jyyzithu left that refuse to integrate into the relaxed Laethorian way of life, they believe this is an opportunity to further their cause on the international stage for the creation of an individual Jyyzith Nation.

As is common in all the nations and ethnic groups of the Zaar Alam island chain they revere the ground bat and as such would enter as the Jyyzith Ground Bats.

I may be online briefly tomorrow, but after that I'll be gone until the New Year. The Cup will probably get underway shortly thereafter.

The roster thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?p=12154626#post12154626) is now open.

The Cup will probably get started in about a week (or maybe sooner if there are few or no new signups).
New Propagandia
31-12-2006, 17:36
New Propagandia's Xanthonian Culture Society, with permission from the Overseer of Sports Samuel Johnson, would like to sign up for the Indefinous World Cup.

The Xanthonian's were the tribal inhabitants on the Xantho peaks, while many belonged to different tribes across the Peaks the main one was a large town called Caldero(now Gainom). The New Propagandians expanded four years ago into the Xantho Peaks and war broke out between them(or more of an extermination on a small scale thanks to technology), and with-in the year the tribal people of the Xantho peaks were crushed.

But the first ever(and current) Prime Minister of New Propagandia, Vaeridian Shiomi, who left the mainland with his supporters in search of freedom to start with, denied the enslavement of the Xanthonians, and forced New Propagandian's to let the Xanthonian's integrate into their culture. Caldero became a large city, but was re-named to Gainom as English became the dominant language.

Also the tribal people, while able to stick to their nomadic and traditional ways, have been largely settling down due to towns being made across the area(and to make-up for the lack of surname's, they were given where the come from or their tribe as their surnname).

And so as a peaceful public demonstration, they wish to sign-up to the Indeginous World Cup. If accepted, the Roster will most likely be the majority of the Xanthonian's favourite and home Primó Vero team, Gainom Xenia.

Um, Arry, what are you basing your 'overall best loser' position on, I'm assuming it's GD right? Because points would a) make more sense, and b) put me in the Semis too :D

Or is it a fair play award, as that rules my team out ;)
New Propagandia

I better be the "Best Loser" after all the hours(yes proper hours) of effort I put into my rps, late nights thanks to it and also the tormenting frustration as it counted down to the time you usually posted the scores but Jolt wasn't being nice, with "Database errors" and taking ages to load whilr my other pages would load instantly.

It shouldn't be on points and GD as that's done by radom numbers.:D

It can't just be points because that would exclude anyone from Group C, but... erm, you're entirely right, you rank above Laethora by any account. I can't believe I miss that.

Rectifying now. And my sincere apologies to Laethora.
