NationStates Jolt Archive

I thought this forum was for the nations to meet and discuss business.

I'm new here, and don't really know anything about the forum. I thought it was for the nations to meet and discuss things. Is that true?

It can be, though this is also an RP forum. International incidents forum, however, is where most business takes place.

And Welcome to Nation States, you being new. *smile* I hope you enjoy it.

Fair warning though, there's a bit of a superiority complex between the people in the NationStates and the people over in International Incidents. A lot of the people here in the NationStates forum have been around for a very long time here on NS, and there's a feeling that the IIers aren't as "sophisticated."

This is total crap by the way. There are bad Roleplayers here in NS, and good Roleplayers over in II. So, it really depends. Personally, I prefer NationStates, but, feel free to make your own decision.

Just as much 'national business' goes on here as there - there does seem to be more warring in the II forum however.

Like Thelas said, it boils down to who you choose to play with, which by no means should limit you. People play in both. Read a bit, see what strikes your fancy, and run with it. There's fun to be had all over.

It's true what they've all said. Essentially, you roleplay as the nation you've created, and do stuff as a nation, or as people from your nation, or whatever. There's an incredibly vast range of stuff you can do on here, and just as many people to do it with.

I'm going to shamelessly plug my own work here, but if you click on this link (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=463085) it'll take you to a guide I wrote on how to get started roleplaying on NS.

Thank you all for your help. I will go read the guide if I can get back to the thread.

I do have one more question though. How do I set the "remember me" option so that I don't have to type my user name and password everytime I visit the site. I kept checking the option, but it never works, and I don't see any of those options in my control pannel.

The 'remember me' keeps me from timing out, and helps when I hit the forums from my nation page. I have to re-log in now and then too, but what it should do is remember your pass and name so you can just start typing and have it autofil. Hit the option before you log in, then make with the entering.

There's other stickies in all the forums on RP suggestions, and other things - Euro's got a good one that a lot of people have contributed to if you look up near the top of the NationStates forum. Never hurts to do a bit of looking, can find a lot of good things all over.

Of course, there's no hard and fast rules save the ones governing the site overall, so it pretty much boils down to 'what works for you' that way. Good luck with it.

Welcome, Angels World.

You forgot the obligatory Newbie smilies: :sniper: :mp5: :gundge: :D

In all seriousness, I hope you enjoy it here... it's a fun game in itself and a lot of people seem to enjoy the RP aspects of it.

I thought the obligatory newbie smiley was :fluffle:.
You can't enjoy ns without a :fluffle:

Roleplay style varies from nation to nation. Read a couple of the threads people have written to get a good sense of different styles and find your own.

Given the last couple -- remember that overuse of smilies is a sure way to not be taken seriously or get labled a n00b rather than newb - don't use them for In Character bits, as cute as some seem to think they are. :P

Preview Post is also your friend - can't tell you how many times I've left out a tag or the like and been saved by this feature. Given the little forum glitches that happen now and then, it's also a good idea to work on a post in notepad/Word/whatever writing proggy you have, and save it before posting. It saves a lot of tears that way, just in case.

Another thing that might be helpful is to try not to clutter up an IC (in character) thread with a lot of OOC (out of character) talk. It happens, but it offends the sensibilities of a lot of folks who try to keep rp clean. Using the Telegram feature from your Nation page is helpful, and other contacts can be gotten from there as needed. There's many players and groups who use IRC as well, in various channels and such for live chat and discussion (see this thread (http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=438421) for a few such channels).

In the words of CEO Kargaah "I got yer business RIGHT HERE!"

And with that out of the way, let me throw in my two rupees....

It seems that the NS forum (meaning this one) is where many diplomatic exchanges, events and fairly serious RP happens. The ignore cannons rarely get brought out here since, if someone doesn't wanna RP with someone, they simply don't with not much mention made of it.

The biggest changes here from II that I noticed are a pair. For one thing, the post rate here is incredibly slower than II. Many would expound on why this is, but it won't be me. Another thing is i've rarely seen any war threads here that involve number-wank. Most combat threads on the NS forum seem to be character driven and detail small skirmishes rather than large numbers on the battlefield. Maybe it's just me, but that's what i've seen myself. With this in mind, it seems the two forums aren't what their descriptions state anymore as opposed to being the hosts of two separate styles of RP. Agreement? Yes / no?

Thank you all very much. I have read a lot of Euroslavia's helpful advice, and I am planning to finish up sometime before the end of the day.

I am a fiction writer, so I have a unique writing style.

I can't wait to start roleplaying. It looks very interesting!

Right, about the number wanking. You do see it sometimes here, but much of the affairs that go on here are actually pre-arranged through our IRC channel on irc.esper.net #nationstates

If you want to RP here, I would highly suggest getting on IRC and joining us there. You'll find a lot of helpful advise, and get to know some of the big power-movers in the forum.

Hi and Welcome to the weird world that is NS.

I'm not trying to pimp any thing  but if you are into sports RP, check out the following RP threads:

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=510063- Its the World Cup, (soccer/football). Big thread with usually 20-30 nations Rping at any given time. (despite their usually being 90-100 that signup)

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=510341- Women's World Cup, just like the World Cup with fewer RPers. a good one to get your feet wet in.

http://forums.jolt.co.uk/showthread.php?t=507641- Olympic games (winter) thread. In between the World Cup one and Women's World Cup one, might require a bit of knowledge about each particular sport, but also a good RP thread due to the number of users.

Welcome again, and hopefully you won't just limit your self to any one type of thread.
